I wanted to learn to tat when I was a teen (I'm 57 now). I let the matter drop (and then forgot about it) because no one around me knew how to do it. Two days ago, I ran across a reference to NEEDLE tatting. I found your videos. I was hooked (no pun intended)! Goddess bless you - you're clear and concise and a joy to watch! You took something that looked complicated and made it easy. Within an hour after watching you, I tatted a coaster! I'm so pleased with your instructions. Thank you!

This is my second day - I’ve been crocheting for about four months and was chatting with our rector about things for a Christmas stall - he mentioned a past parishioner who made tatted crosses, so giving it a try.... I haven’t got the right needle yet, but already I can see how this step will make a much better finish to the work. Thank you and God bless.
I have tried and tried for YEARS to learn how to tat! I have 2 small books about it and 2 different shuttles. I do believe i will now just use the needles!! THANK YOU so much for this video!! Can't wait to try it out again.

Today I used this tip on a mini doily I was making for a card. It really really works! The first one I made without using the tip curled up and looked like a doll hat. When I used the tip it was almost totally flat. This is one tip I plan to remember and use in all my chain to chain tatting. Thanks Katy..and to all others...this is a must try!!!

I didn't realize that the automatic cc was so ineffective,' til today, I'm glad to know that. Now I can/will try to be more user friendly in that way, without depending on cc to get the important info across. :) Joan, you are teaching me a lot. :)
Thanks again for showing how to make work look flatter and better. I made a five ring flower as a pendant with chains connecting. It was hard to get it to lay right and at the joins it was a little twisted looking. After trying your technique of using that extra stitch,it looked so much better.
I just tried your technique(Katy' secret) on a necklace and it works. I made the same necklace before and when I was finished the necklace looked like a spiral. But when I applied your technique on the same pattern the finished product had no twist and it was very easy to press. You"re a life saver, keep sharing your secrets.

I have wanted to tat since I was in my twenties and received some beautiful Romanian tatted pieces. Well, I am now in my early seventies with time on my hands. I have tried in the past and could never get the hang of using a shuttle for tatting. Needle tatting is going to be my way to learn. I am not new to crafting being an avid crocheter since age 11 and macrame since my teens plus many other crafts along with Marlin Spike even weaving nets, but this just always confused me. Now I can do it! Thank you so much. One more learning project going off my bucket list. It is funny as I was going through the first videos I actually did this step on my own just to find it as one of the "secret steps".

I have just watch your video of the "secret stitch" and I must say, you have made it seem so simple, even though I know it takes a long time learned skill such as you have, but I am now wanting to learn and am very happy you explain in a manner I can absorb! Kate, I learned to tat with a shuttle using a dvd. I haven't been tatting for long. I saw a book for tatting with beads, but it was for those who had a lot more experience than me. I searched the internet and found your videos. I didn't know about needle tatting. I have since ordered needles and have been working along with you. It is so much easier that tatting with a shuttle. Thank you so much for your wonderful lessons!

Joan, there is a small square box on the youtube video player with "cc" on it, when clicked it will give the option to turn on an automatically generated captions/text of the dialog. I checked it to make sure it works, it does, but I just realized that the automatic text is often wrong, so may be more funny than helpful. But try it & see. I have to ration my computer time, as I work through vision problems, but I will try to add more text in the future. Hope this helps! :)
I'm a very new tatter (as in got a book and needle kit a couple days ago lol), and I've been practicing by making a simple length of ring, and chain edging. I'm having fun, but I wasn't happy with how the chains were looking twisted... thanks so much for the great video and technique! The needle is supposed to be straight. I have a really hard grip and tend to bend my needles after a time. I try to use fresh straight needles for my videos, must have not checked well enough for this one. So glad that you enjoy the videos! Happy tatting! :)

Annita, So glad you are tatting! For me, doing the step in this video works best. It isn't exactly a lock stitch, or a knot, but serves as a guide & brace for the chain, & thus the structure of the whole work. Use this step after knotting, not in place of, & only on chains, & always in the front. I think the lock stitch you are referring to is the knot/knot variations that are used on rings and chains after they are completed, to secure them. Hope this help! Keep tatting!!! :)

thank you for this video. you have reinstalled my interest of tatting. my grandmother died at the age of 88 in 1986. Needless to say when she did try to teach me how to tat I was quite young and I just couldn't get the hang of it. And I've been kicking myself, of course, since she had to stop doing it herself around 19 82 or so. I still have a few pieces of hers that she made but in the end she enjoyed making little designs for stationary. the next time I have a box of it out I will definitely show it to you. I only have her shuttles now and you using your needle make it look so easy. as soon as I am able I will be trying to learn. I miss her still. and, at 57 years old I probably should get around to it pretty soon. thank you again and I have subscribed.

Great video Katy! As I am hearing impaired I was wondering if you could add some written text to your videos. It took me several viewings to figure out what you were doing and why. But even if that's not possible keep making the videos! Yours are excellent and a huge help.

Hello Kati, thank you for your videos.... was getting frustrated because my chain kept turning. I have only been tatting for a week and have so many questions. As I can see in this video you lock the chain and ring. Is there a specific way of locking the chain or ring? I have seen this lock stitch applied in front like in this video. I’ve seen the work turned and then lock stitched. What’s the difference?

+purplepaint1 hI pp1. My name is Mary Jane. I have the same problem..awful arthritis. I found a lotion in my feed store...I think it's name is 'Grumpy Old Men' . It's in a blue bottle. I'll find the real name for you. It's non-greasy, so you don't leave residue on your work. Smells good...to me...But I love the smells of horse stuff. Hole this helps. I also use wrist support slip-on thingies. They're usually at the beginning of the of the OTC stuff in walmart. Hope it helps, MJ
Hi Mary Jane! Oh I'll have to check out the grumpy old men lotion! I have tons of the wrist support gloves! I guess I should just wear them all the time. :) I've also started wearing copper bracelets and they really do help!

I had carpel tunnel from crocheting, and used to wear a wrist support sleeve all the time for any kind of handiwork. I will some times wear it now, but not often. I find that the "speed tatting" method reduces the stress on my wrist and does not cause me pain. Maybe experiment between the two methods, traditional and the speed tatting, and see if one works better than the other. Copper, magnets, cream, wrist support or pressure sleeves, can all help. I also found that making myself relax, and not be so tense or tat so tightly, also helps, as does pacing myself, so that I do not tat all the time, but do take breaks. :) Hope there is something helpful in this reply! I knit and crochet and I have joined a few craft sites and just found out theres a thing called tatting, yours is the first video I just saw, amazing. I am going to give this tatting a try. What projects can you make? I normally make scarves, afghans, baby clothes, recently l have learnt to make fingerless gloves, l can also make hats, just the basics and intermediate and advanced but now I want to learn tatting.
You sound like a fantastic crafter! I hope you have tried tatting now, and are loving it! I can make fine lace, like edgings and fingerless gloves, and even jewelry. I also can tat with thicker thread and even yarn to make endless projects of all kinds. It is so fun!

How would I know how many stitches I would need? Also how do you make a split ring. I have a bit of difficulty with split rings. Is there an easier way? Thank you for your videos! I am so glad that are tatting! Creating a tatting pattern can both be easy or hard. You can lay it all out before hand and that makes it hard. But the easy way is to make something you like, then using it as a guide slowly tat it again writing down the directions on how to make it as you go. To write it down, simply use the same terms and abbreviations a pattern would contain to explain what you are doing. Katy, don't you reverse work after doing a ring or chain? I thought it was always necessary to do that. If you have a better way, please make a tutorial of it!! I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW. THANKS.

I too love your easy to follow directions, but I cannot see or find where that loop comes in to close the circle. Could you show that slowly and up closes? Thank you!

Kate, your vidios are great and helped me a lot. Is it posible to leave unworked thread in needle tatting?
Yes, totally possible, and very easy! The basics, is that when you are starting a new ring (R.), leave a space, however long you want your unworked thread to be, between you previous ring (R.), and where you place your needle against thread to start next ring (R.). I have not had a chance to do a video on this yet. But a British lady has, if you youtube search "Unworked Thread Space in Needle Tatting by TheWalnutBaby" you should be able to find it. Can you recommend thread options for me. I am looking to use some nice thread that when the project is finished it looks as nice as it should. I find regular crochet thread to be kind of cheap looking...
I like DMC threads a lot, they have many that are very sturdy, beautiful, and smooth (they slide very easily off the needle), and look great as a finished items. My favorite, because it look old fashioned and rustic, is DMC Braque Crochet thread size 10, in ecru. :)

Will the knot at the end of the chain prevent the work from unraveling if it has to be cut to size for an edging?
Amy, the knot will hold the tatting together if you cut to size for edging, if you cut the edging to size leaving extra space between where you cut and where you want the tatting to end. It is best if you do not need to cut your tatting (if you can make it to size or tat directly onto the object you are edging). To explain better, in case you do need to cut it: Cut your tatted edging roughly an inch further down your tatting then you need. Then un-do/unravel the tatting back to the knot at the place you want your edging to stop. With the thread ends that you exposed, make an extra knot if desired (for extra strength), then hide ends of thread and cut extra off, as if you had just finished tatting.

I'm sorry it is too fast. I wish I could do it slower, but if I do it slower then the video ends up a lot longer and then I can't get it uploaded to youtube because of my internet connecting. Maybe try watching a little bit and then pausing it, and re-watching each part. Just take it slow. I have heard that there is an app that you can get that makes it so that you can slow down videos. I haven't tried it, but maybe that would work/help.
I think there is a way to slow down video speed in settings top right of screen🤔

Hello:) I recently started needle tatting and sometime when I try to slip the chain or loop of the needle it gets stuck and won't slide off... Any tips?:)
Sorry, just saw your question. Try making the stitches only slightly more loose on the needle. They should slide easily and freely. Some designs will need tighter work, but you could also try changing needle size. Thread might not be small enough to pull thru on some. Go up and try once maybe?
Simone Kinch watch your tension while working ..you'll get into a rhythm and it will be more even as you are more comfortable with it ;-)
