Thank you so much for this video. My grandmother taught me tatting on a shuttle. I have forgotten how to use the shuttle but sure I can find it on line somewhere and pick it up again. This stitch looks better then the one you showed first and that is how the instructions show how to do needle tatting. I really like that it doesn't need to be knotted. Looks like the true stitch that you get on a shuttle. Glad I found your instructions.

But, I have seen other videos in the past few days that showed the first method of doing a ring, so I was familiar with that method already. I am a left handed and new to tatting and have had to learn by watching right handed tutorials It has been a challenge! First off let me say I applaud your efforts to share this information. I remember when I first started needle tatting a few years ago and how confusing it was trying to figure out some of the more advanced techniques way back then. Having said that, I think I might have had a difficult time understanding this video if I hadn't learned making a true ring with thread cut off the ball first since seeing the end of the thread (that was cut off the ball) really helped me understand the thread orientation. Perhaps it might be more clear to newbees if you just did a simple video starting with a true ring using the thread cut off the ball first and then progress to show how to do the more advanced techinque of making a true ring with the ball thread. Then if you want to compare the true ring with the SCMR you could always include those instructions at the end of the video. It's kind of a natural progression of making needle tatted rings. It's just a suggestion and again, I applaud your efforts to share this valuable knowledge with needle tatters. :) Barb G, AKA Sonsery, (who is also an alumna of Cyn's tatting class :).
Thank you so much Barb. I thought about that when I did the video and they were wanting the demo for class pretty quick. So had to cut it a bit short. I have to agree with you on progressing up to the true ring. I am hoping that once things get a bit settled around here and I help Cyn get things set up for the changes next year on the classes and yahoo group I really want to break these vids down to one step at a time type of series. I have so many videos that show more than one technique that I believe it can confuse a newbie to the tatting world. I love it when I hear from others with critique that is helpful. My whole goal with this channel was to clarify more in depth and with slower hand movements so viewers could understand them better. Many of these vids were on a rush order. I know this is a very old video but if you could please explain how to join a true ring to the previous ring that would be helpful. I am a shuttle tatter trying to needle tatt and my rings/chains keep zigzaging i have no clue what im doing wrong, even when following directions.
Thank you for a very clear instructive tutorial. Yes, the true ring is much tighter and nicer than regular needle tatted rings. But I cannot figure out how to make two consecutive true rings without a chain between them. How to position the thread in my hand and on the needle. Could you please explain how to make for example 1st Ring 3-6-3 cl and then 2nd Ring 3+6-3 cl.

Hi Patricia, I am not making any new videos and haven't for awhile now. I have been taking care of my mother who has dementia and she has gotten to the point we have had to begin the process of placing her in a nursing care facility. Hopefully that will all be settled by the end of the year. As soon as that is behind us I can then again focus on the videos as well as the other things that I have laid to the side in order to take care of her. It is nice, but once the ring is completed with the true ring, you have only the "tail" left with the needle to continue on with your pattern.....how do you get your needle back onto the "ball" to continue the work? Do you put another tatting needle on the ball end before you start the ring and then use that once the ring is complete? I cannot see making a true ring, only to have to cut it and tie on the ball thread defeats the purpose of not having to tie a knot at the joint. Can you clarify for me.

Thank you for the great tutorial. It has helped me out a lot. I am still having issues with pulling the tail through my stitches. I can't figure out why it's happening. I've tried different types of threads, and it's still not pulling through properly. Could it be I'm adding the stitches too tight to the needle? I'm using a size 3 needle and linen thread. Thanks for any tips.
Hello. I am so glad you enjoyed the video. As far as the needle issue my guess is your tatting with a smaller needle than you need to and your putting the stitches on too tight. I would loosen up on the stitches first then if it doesn't get easier then get a larger needle. Go up to the size 5 needle. However in defense of the tatting I would definitely work on loosening the stitches on the needle. A size 3 needle really makes the tatting beautiful.

Ok, after many failed attempts, I finally got this. Thank you for your last helpful tips btw, I am now using that half stitch and it has made a difference in the way my tatting lays right at that point where the ring meets the chain .My question is how do you continue from this point? After the chain, how would you make a true ring once you've begun tatting? Do you continue to work all your rings with your tail thread? Please clue me in on how to make the NEXT true ring.
Andrea Epperson Hi Andrea and thank you for watching. You would continue making rings using either the true ring or the standard self closing mock ring that needle tatters usually do. The true ring is seldom used these days as it creates alot of ends to sew in unless your willing to struggle with a huge amount of thread thru the eye of the needle. I am currently working on videos for the online classes that Georgia Seitz sponsors and will be doing all the videos for all of the class for beginners. Those classes start in the fall with a whole new layout for the classes including new tat along videos for the homework. Would love for you to join us. It would be better if I could see what you are doing. You seem to be showing the needle more than the actual thread work on the other hand, in the beginning.

The reason the needle is shown is because there is no thread work done with the other hand other than the motions to place the thread on the needle and you just hold everything tight with that same hand to close the ring. Beginning Tatting Video Series The problem I'm having is seeing exactly the way you laid the thread along the back side of the needle when working off of the ball at or about 9:49 minutes. I am new and followed along great with the tie off of the ring which has been a problem for me in the past. If you could help me by explaining this would be a great help.
Debrah Davis Hi Debrah. thank you for watching. the thread that goes to the ball lays back towards the eye of the needle. the ball thread and the thread running thru the eye, also called the tail thread,are both going the same direction towards the back of the needle where the eye is. you will be doing the double stitches with the loop of thread that is attached to the ball thread and flows thru the eye of the needle. that is why I suggest to leave a pretty long tail because as you go along you will be using the tail thread. Normally you work with the ball thread when putting your double stitches on the needle with the true ring you will be using the tail thread, I hope that explains it better for you. You demonstrated how to make a ring without knots. It has nothing to do with saving threads. If you want to continue to make chains then rings how do you go on without having to cut the thread. My problem is i run out of thread on my round even if i am attached to the ball.

As far as the 2 shuttle patterns go, shuttle tatters use the second shuttle as if it was a ball of thread. the first shuttle is the working shuttle. So to convert look at the pattern as the second shuttle being the ball thread and the first shuttle as being the needle your working with. I hope that helps you with this. Overall the steps and teaching were very good; however, too many "okays" at the end of steps for a teacher. As well, 'Now" got a bit overdone. How about "next", the next step" and vary the "now". . . . . Also, would have been helpful to show how to set up for the next ring on the row with the true ring. . . .
Hi Love and thank you for watching. First off let me say this is Barbara Foster's method of a true ring and even though there are no knots in conventional tatting as with a shuttle when needle tatting it is sometimes necessary. That said the double stitch does create a knot called a half hitch knot. If you look at that you will see it is the double stitch and one other point back in the old days late 1800's they did call it knots. Several of the older tatting books state this. The directions would say something like 9 double knots and a picot. So just a bit of info to share with you. Again thank you for watching.
I have 2 ?s for you... 1) how do you use a picot gauge with needle tatting. I have tried and cant get past awkward lol... 2) I have seen mention of a daisy picot... is that like a thrown off ring? how do you do it?
+Judith Brummett Hi and thank you for watching. Using a picot gauge with needles is awkward for everyone. Most needle tatters tend to eyeball the picots and with time you just know how far to space them. I have took a sharpie marker and marked my index finger the space I want then cover the marker with a bit of clear nail polish. It works pretty good. The daisy picot is a very advanced technique. It really isn't a thrown off ring, it is a picot that looks like a thrown ring. It is done using 2 threads not the single thread needle tatters usually use. It is easier done using 2 shuttles than using 2 threads and one needle. The daisy picot is tatted as if is was a ring but the technique is 2 double stitches with the one thread usually the core thread and then switch shuttles and make the amount of stitches required for the daisy picot and then switch shuttles again and make the last 2 finishing stitches then when you pull it up it is basically a tatted picot. That is the best way I can describe the daisy picot. Jane Eborall has the technique on her page but the instructions are written for shuttle tatters. I have not seen it done in needle tatting and personally haven't tried it in needle. You gave me something to work on and figure out. Hmmm. A new video to share in the future? Who Knows. Hi. Thank you for making this video. Very handy! I have a question about how to make this same true ring at the end of a chain. My current pattern motif is ring + chain + ring + chain + ring. I can get the first true ring fine, but after I do the chain and need to make the next true ring, I get lost. I end up making a regular self-closing mock ring. How do you do this step and maintain true rings throughout the pattern?

Remember the true ring is made using the tail thread. so you would lay the work you have done towards the end of the needle where the eye is and begin next to the last chain and use the tail thread to tat with. Beginning Tatting Video Series Okay. I think I understand it. So, to do the project I need to make sure I have long enough tail thread (leaving it looped on the needle) to make the four true rings and I use the front end of the needle for tatting the chains. Is that right? I like the look of the true rings for this better than the mock-self-closing ring. The project I'm doing is the Celtic bookmark. It's the four-point motifs I've been stuck on - mostly getting their overall shape to look not-so-lopsided. That and getting the tails to hide and not pop out. I still consider myself a very novice tatter, but getting better the more I do. Speaking of hiding tails, thank you for the floss trick! It works beautifully, especially with needle tatting. I struggle with it on shuttles, but I am determined! I think a small dowel rod with a tiny hole drilled in the middle of it to slide the tail of the floss through, then rolling the floss tail end up on to dowel and pulling helps give you better grip on the floss to pull. I have been just threading the floss tail through the needle, then wrapping it around the needle and pulling the tails through but the floss slips on the bare metal. I think a wood dowel would give better grip. I'll try it and let you know. My mother taught me basic tatting about a year ago and I started looking up how-to's for patterns & techniques on my own after that. I tend to do more shuttle than needle, although I like both. I've tatted randomly since my main focus is my airbrush art. I learn crafts/art/music techniques rather quickly. I recently started sitting out in the back yard in the mornings with my coffee and tatting tools, tatting whilst I wake up and start my day before airbrushing. Helps me clear the morning's mental cobwebs. I do enjoy your tatting videos and greatly appreciate your hard work and diligence to supply them. Good luck with the new channels! Your on the right track. Keep going. I like you do think the true ring is more to my liking than the self closing mock ring. In my opinion the scmr is a little floppy and doesn't hold a good shape especially with Celtic tatting. I enjoyed reading about all the things you do. I also do a multitude of crafts but I have to admit tatting is my favorite. I am working on getting things together and a bit more organized to get the new channels going. The new videos I will have a demo piece done in actual tatting thread so that my viewers can see what the actual piece will look like using tatting thread. The instruction I think will still look better to the viewer using the larger thread and larger shuttles. I also ordered some more tatting needles, like I really needed more, LOL, but they are another brand needle and I want to show a comparison of the 2 available brands to my viewers and give them my thoughts on both brands. Handy hands does put out a nice quality needle however I find that when using a smaller needle to get a tighter stitch it doesn't always want to thread without splitting the ply's and once the ply is split with most any thread it tends to loosen the ply throughout the piece and it shows. This other brand I am getting thru Be-Stitched.com and have heard from other needle tatters that the needle eye is more open so it is easier to thread. I typically use one size needle smaller than the standard for the thread size I am using to get a tighter stitch. So that may also help you out with your needle tatting as well. I will let you know once I get the other brand how well they thread up. I will also be adding a series to the new channels and this one on how to make your own findings for jewelry you tat and once I conquer the ANKARS technique I will be putting out some videos on the basics of that as well under the new advanced tatting techniques channel. She's not very computer savvy but that's why she has me to call on. The tatting needles I'm currently using are Handy Hands' brand. The thinner needles are bent a bit from previous tries of pulling thread through. I recently ordered two Aerlit shuttles. I'm not liking them as much as I thought I might. The bobbin sticks and causes the thread to stretch and tighten against the bobbin itself. I spun the bobbin several times to get it to loosen up some - that was a mistake as it now just spins loosely. Cheap plastic. Oh well. I have about half a dozen regular plastic Clover shuttles, which I tend to prefer using anyway. I may try carving my own shuttles from wood and scavenging the hook points from the two Aerlit shuttles at some point. I'll try dropping down one needle size and see how that goes. Thanks again! I am like you about the aerlit shuttles. If you want a really good bobbin shuttle the GR-8 shuttles made by Randy Houtz are really nice It is a learning curve to begin to use them but really really nice once you get the hang of it. If your going to do the shuttle techniques I would suggest a good quality wood shuttle as they tend to feel more natural in the hand and also your hands tend not to tire out easily when working larger projects. Over time the metal Boye shuttles and as with most metal shuttles tend to leave a metallic film on your hands which transfers over to the thread. The best plastic shuttles that is my go to shuttle is the Moonlit shuttles put out by Handy Hands. they hold a descent amount of thread and have the built in hook. They don't stretch out as easily as some of the other plastic shuttles do with using different sized threads. I use my wood shuttles for home projects that way if I misplace one it will turn up. When I am out and about I take the moonlit shuttles that way if I misplace it not much money lost and I don't cry over loosing a really awesome wood shuttle. LOL. if the aerlit it too loose for you to use you can always use those page reinforment things and stick them on top of the bobbin. You can use up to 3 on each side of the bobbin to get the grip back on the bobbin, but over time those will wear out and have to be replaced. The Gr-8's as with other more expensive shuttles they can be used with sewing machine bobbins and therefore you can buy several bobbins and keep them in a bobbin case loaded. I got a bobbin winder one of those portable small ones put out by Singer and when we are taking a trip I will load an entire bobbin storage case and that way I can tat away while my husband drives us to our destination and reloading the bobbin is a breeze as all I do is remove one and replace with another. Also by using the sewing machine bobbins you can wind the bobbin on a sewing machine or the small bobbin winder and the bobbins are wound properly and won't cause the issues you have had with the aerlit's. If you choose to go with the Moonlits I have heard rumours through the tatting vine that they are available at Hobby Lobby in Stores in some locations. Hope this information helps you. Happy Tatting

You said you lived in Georgia. Palmettos comes every year same place. Toccoa, Ga. It is part of the international community of Tatters. Commonly called IOLI. There is smaller conventions around like Fingerlakes, they are in New York, Lace days in Indiana, Fringe tatters in Canada and so forth. Hi Carol. This demonstration is not a scmr. It is a needle tatted true ring. 2 different rings. A true ring most represents the ring made by shuttle tatters.

Hi Maja. Once you finish the true ring both threads will be at the bottom as with doing a regular needle tatted ring. Just when you turn your work to continue to the next chain you don't have to tie the knot to hold the stitches in place. The true ring locks the stitches in place just like when shuttle tatters make a ring. When using a shuttle you do not have to tie a knot after each ring and chain. The true ring helps eliminate some of the knot tieing needle tatters have to do. Hope that explains it for you. I will be doing some new videos soon showing how to do techniques using a needle that shuttle tatters use to help make your needle tatting look like it was shuttle tatted so look for them in the future. Hopefully by summer all the new videos will be up. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.
hi can i ask you what size of thread to use for a bginner to tatting as ive been using a size 8 which i feel its to thin for my likeing as you cant really see the work as good.
Hi Joanne, Thank you for watching. The size that is best for a beginner is a size 10 thread or you could even go up to a size 3. In the videos I use a size 3 crochet cotton. It is put out by Coats and Clark and is sold in the US under the name Aunt Lydia. It is a good thread to start with as it is inexpensive and it comes in a nice size. As you begin tatting you will be making alot of mistakes but with those mistakes comes learning. Once you get the techniques down and know how to work the rings and chains evenly then I suggest getting Lizbeth thread which is sold thru Handy Hands as well as Hobby Lobby in store. Some of the needlework stores are even beginning to carry it as well. It is a really nice 6 cord thread. I hope this helps you. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Happy Tatting

Hi Claire and thank you for watching. When your tail thread runs out you will add more thread. You will use your tatting needle and sew in the ends then cut the thread attach new thread and begin where you left off. Make sure you end at where a ring and chain meet. That way you can loop through the ring and tie the shoelace trick to get your threads in the right position if necessary. If not loop through the ring at the base thread your needle and begin tatting. Thank you so much for this video. My grandmother taught me tatting on a shuttle. I have forgotten how to use the shuttle but sure I can find it on line somewhere and pick it up again. This stitch looks better then the one you showed first and that is how the instructions show how to do needle tatting. I really like that it doesn't need to be knotted. Looks like the true stitch that you get on a shuttle. Glad I found your instructions.

First off let me say I applaud your efforts to share this information. I remember when I first started needle tatting a few years ago and how confusing it was trying to figure out some of the more advanced techniques way back then. Having said that, I think I might have had a difficult time understanding this video if I hadn't learned making a true ring with thread cut off the ball first since seeing the end of the thread (that was cut off the ball) really helped me understand the thread orientation. Perhaps it might be more clear to newbees if you just did a simple video starting with a true ring using the thread cut off the ball first and then progress to show how to do the more advanced techinque of making a true ring with the ball thread. Then if you want to compare the true ring with the SCMR you could always include those instructions at the end of the video. It's kind of a natural progression of making needle tatted rings. It's just a suggestion and again, I applaud your efforts to share this valuable knowledge with needle tatters. :) Barb G, AKA Sonsery, (who is also an alumna of Cyn's tatting class :).
Thank you so much Barb. I thought about that when I did the video and they were wanting the demo for class pretty quick. So had to cut it a bit short. I have to agree with you on progressing up to the true ring. I am hoping that once things get a bit settled around here and I help Cyn get things set up for the changes next year on the classes and yahoo group I really want to break these vids down to one step at a time type of series. I have so many videos that show more than one technique that I believe it can confuse a newbie to the tatting world. I love it when I hear from others with critique that is helpful. My whole goal with this channel was to clarify more in depth and with slower hand movements so viewers could understand them better. Many of these vids were on a rush order. But I cannot figure out how to make two consecutive true rings without a chain between them. How to position the thread in my hand and on the needle.

Hi Patricia, I am not making any new videos and haven't for awhile now. I have been taking care of my mother who has dementia and she has gotten to the point we have had to begin the process of placing her in a nursing care facility. Hopefully that will all be settled by the end of the year. As soon as that is behind us I can then again focus on the videos as well as the other things that I have laid to the side in order to take care of her. It is nice, but once the ring is completed with the true ring, you have only the "tail" left with the needle to continue on with your pattern.....how do you get your needle back onto the "ball" to continue the work? Do you put another tatting needle on the ball end before you start the ring and then use that once the ring is complete? I cannot see making a true ring, only to have to cut it and tie on the ball thread defeats the purpose of not having to tie a knot at the joint. Can you clarify for me.

Thank you for the great tutorial. It has helped me out a lot. I am still having issues with pulling the tail through my stitches. I can't figure out why it's happening. I've tried different types of threads, and it's still not pulling through properly. Could it be I'm adding the stitches too tight to the needle? I'm using a size 3 needle and linen thread. Thanks for any tips.
Hello. I am so glad you enjoyed the video. As far as the needle issue my guess is your tatting with a smaller needle than you need to and your putting the stitches on too tight. I would loosen up on the stitches first then if it doesn't get easier then get a larger needle. Go up to the size 5 needle. However in defense of the tatting I would definitely work on loosening the stitches on the needle. A size 3 needle really makes the tatting beautiful.

Ok, after many failed attempts, I finally got this. Thank you for your last helpful tips btw, I am now using that half stitch and it has made a difference in the way my tatting lays right at that point where the ring meets the chain .My question is how do you continue from this point? After the chain, how would you make a true ring once you've begun tatting? Do you continue to work all your rings with your tail thread? Please clue me in on how to make the NEXT true ring.
Andrea Epperson Hi Andrea and thank you for watching. You would continue making rings using either the true ring or the standard self closing mock ring that needle tatters usually do. The true ring is seldom used these days as it creates alot of ends to sew in unless your willing to struggle with a huge amount of thread thru the eye of the needle. And on the true ring, you should have put the needle through the loop because the last stitch is twisted.
On a true ring you DO NOT put the needle thru the loop. Once you do that then you are doing a scmr. This method is done per Barbara Fosters technique

The reason the needle is shown is because there is no thread work done with the other hand other than the motions to place the thread on the needle and you just hold everything tight with that same hand to close the ring. Beginning Tatting Video Series The problem I'm having is seeing exactly the way you laid the thread along the back side of the needle when working off of the ball at or about 9:49 minutes. I am new and followed along great with the tie off of the ring which has been a problem for me in the past. If you could help me by explaining this would be a great help.
Debrah Davis Hi Debrah. thank you for watching. the thread that goes to the ball lays back towards the eye of the needle. the ball thread and the thread running thru the eye, also called the tail thread,are both going the same direction towards the back of the needle where the eye is. you will be doing the double stitches with the loop of thread that is attached to the ball thread and flows thru the eye of the needle. that is why I suggest to leave a pretty long tail because as you go along you will be using the tail thread. Normally you work with the ball thread when putting your double stitches on the needle with the true ring you will be using the tail thread, I hope that explains it better for you. which is the closest ring to what shuttle tatters make, It is made by
working with the tail thread not the ball thread that is why it seems I
am going in a different direction because I am using the tail thread to
create the true ring. the layout to make the true ring is different
than that of the self closing mock ring that most needle tatters use. I

You demonstrated how to make a ring without knots. It has nothing to do with saving threads. If you want to continue to make chains then rings how do you go on without having to cut the thread. My problem is i run out of thread on my round even if i am attached to the ball.

As far as the 2 shuttle patterns go, shuttle tatters use the second shuttle as if it was a ball of thread. the first shuttle is the working shuttle. So to convert look at the pattern as the second shuttle being the ball thread and the first shuttle as being the needle your working with. I hope that helps you with this. Overall the steps and teaching were very good; however, too many "okays" at the end of steps for a teacher. As well, 'Now" got a bit overdone. How about "next", the next step" and vary the "now". . . . . Also, would have been helpful to show how to set up for the next ring on the row with the true ring. . . .

I came up with the true ring needle tatting many years ago. I hate the mock or SCMR because There are no knots in tatting; just double stitches.
Hi Love and thank you for watching. First off let me say this is Barbara Foster's method of a true ring and even though there are no knots in conventional tatting as with a shuttle when needle tatting it is sometimes necessary. That said the double stitch does create a knot called a half hitch knot. If you look at that you will see it is the double stitch and one other point back in the old days late 1800's they did call it knots. Several of the older tatting books state this. The directions would say something like 9 double knots and a picot. So just a bit of info to share with you. Again thank you for watching.

I have 2 ?s for you... 1) how do you use a picot gauge with needle tatting. I have tried and cant get past awkward lol... 2) I have seen mention of a daisy picot... is that like a thrown off ring? how do you do it?
+Judith Brummett Hi and thank you for watching. Using a picot gauge with needles is awkward for everyone. Most needle tatters tend to eyeball the picots and with time you just know how far to space them. I have took a sharpie marker and marked my index finger the space I want then cover the marker with a bit of clear nail polish. It works pretty good. The daisy picot is a very advanced technique. It really isn't a thrown off ring, it is a picot that looks like a thrown ring. It is done using 2 threads not the single thread needle tatters usually use. It is easier done using 2 shuttles than using 2 threads and one needle. The daisy picot is tatted as if is was a ring but the technique is 2 double stitches with the one thread usually the core thread and then switch shuttles and make the amount of stitches required for the daisy picot and then switch shuttles again and make the last 2 finishing stitches then when you pull it up it is basically a tatted picot. That is the best way I can describe the daisy picot. Jane Eborall has the technique on her page but the instructions are written for shuttle tatters. I have not seen it done in needle tatting and personally haven't tried it in needle. You gave me something to work on and figure out. Hmmm. A new video to share in the future? Who Knows. Hi. Thank you for making this video. Very handy! I have a question about how to make this same true ring at the end of a chain. My current pattern motif is ring + chain + ring + chain + ring. I can get the first true ring fine, but after I do the chain and need to make the next true ring, I get lost. I end up making a regular self-closing mock ring. How do you do this step and maintain true rings throughout the pattern?

Remember the true ring is made using the tail thread. so you would lay the work you have done towards the end of the needle where the eye is and begin next to the last chain and use the tail thread to tat with. Over the summer I will be working on another you tube channel for the beginners tatting class sponsored by Georgia Seitz. Each class will have it's own channel for needle and shuttle as well as advanced techniques. They will be released starting in September so look for those. Beginning Tatting Video Series Okay. I think I understand it. So, to do the project I need to make sure I have long enough tail thread (leaving it looped on the needle) to make the four true rings and I use the front end of the needle for tatting the chains. Is that right? I like the look of the true rings for this better than the mock-self-closing ring. The project I'm doing is the Celtic bookmark. It's the four-point motifs I've been stuck on - mostly getting their overall shape to look not-so-lopsided. That and getting the tails to hide and not pop out. I still consider myself a very novice tatter, but getting better the more I do.
Speaking of hiding tails, thank you for the floss trick! It works beautifully, especially with needle tatting. I struggle with it on shuttles, but I am determined! I think a small dowel rod with a tiny hole drilled in the middle of it to slide the tail of the floss through, then rolling the floss tail end up on to dowel and pulling helps give you better grip on the floss to pull. I have been just threading the floss tail through the needle, then wrapping it around the needle and pulling the tails through but the floss slips on the bare metal. I think a wood dowel would give better grip. I'll try it and let you know.
My mother taught me basic tatting about a year ago and I started looking up how-to's for patterns & techniques on my own after that. I tend to do more shuttle than needle, although I like both. I've tatted randomly since my main focus is my airbrush art. I learn crafts/art/music techniques rather quickly. I recently started sitting out in the back yard in the mornings with my coffee and tatting tools, tatting whilst I wake up and start my day before airbrushing. Helps me clear the morning's mental cobwebs.

Your on the right track. Keep going. I like you do think the true ring is more to my liking than the self closing mock ring. In my opinion the scmr is a little floppy and doesn't hold a good shape especially with Celtic tatting. I enjoyed reading about all the things you do. I also do a multitude of crafts but I have to admit tatting is my favorite. I am working on getting things together and a bit more organized to get the new channels going. The new videos I will have a demo piece done in actual tatting thread so that my viewers can see what the actual piece will look like using tatting thread. The instruction I think will still look better to the viewer using the larger thread and larger shuttles. I also ordered some more tatting needles, like I really needed more, LOL, but they are another brand needle and I want to show a comparison of the 2 available brands to my viewers and give them my thoughts on both brands. Handy hands does put out a nice quality needle however I find that when using a smaller needle to get a tighter stitch it doesn't always want to thread without splitting the ply's and once the ply is split with most any thread it tends to loosen the ply throughout the piece and it shows. This other brand I am getting thru Be-Stitched.com and have heard from other needle tatters that the needle eye is more open so it is easier to thread. I typically use one size needle smaller than the standard for the thread size I am using to get a tighter stitch. So that may also help you out with your needle tatting as well. I will let you know once I get the other brand how well they thread up. I will also be adding a series to the new channels and this one on how to make your own findings for jewelry you tat and once I conquer the ANKARS technique I will be putting out some videos on the basics of that as well under the new advanced tatting techniques channel. Beginning Tatting Video Series Sounds exciting! Good luck with the ANKARS technique! :) Looks very complex! I'm not quite there yet. Haha. I'll have to get my mom signed up to your channels too. She's not very computer savvy but that's why she has me to call on. The tatting needles I'm currently using are Handy Hands' brand. The thinner needles are bent a bit from previous tries of pulling thread through. I recently ordered two Aerlit shuttles. I'm not liking them as much as I thought I might. The bobbin sticks and causes the thread to stretch and tighten against the bobbin itself. I spun the bobbin several times to get it to loosen up some - that was a mistake as it now just spins loosely. Cheap plastic. Oh well. I have about half a dozen regular plastic Clover shuttles, which I tend to prefer using anyway. I may try carving my own shuttles from wood and scavenging the hook points from the two Aerlit shuttles at some point. I'll try dropping down one needle size and see how that goes. Thanks again! I am like you about the aerlit shuttles. If you want a really good bobbin shuttle the GR-8 shuttles made by Randy Houtz are really nice It is a learning curve to begin to use them but really really nice once you get the hang of it. If your going to do the shuttle techniques I would suggest a good quality wood shuttle as they tend to feel more natural in the hand and also your hands tend not to tire out easily when working larger projects. Over time the metal Boye shuttles and as with most metal shuttles tend to leave a metallic film on your hands which transfers over to the thread. The best plastic shuttles that is my go to shuttle is the Moonlit shuttles put out by Handy Hands. they hold a descent amount of thread and have the built in hook. They don't stretch out as easily as some of the other plastic shuttles do with using different sized threads. I use my wood shuttles for home projects that way if I misplace one it will turn up. When I am out and about I take the moonlit shuttles that way if I misplace it not much money lost and I don't cry over loosing a really awesome wood shuttle. LOL. if the aerlit it too loose for you to use you can always use those page reinforment things and stick them on top of the bobbin. You can use up to 3 on each side of the bobbin to get the grip back on the bobbin, but over time those will wear out and have to be replaced. The Gr-8's as with other more expensive shuttles they can be used with sewing machine bobbins and therefore you can buy several bobbins and keep them in a bobbin case loaded. I got a bobbin winder one of those portable small ones put out by Singer and when we are taking a trip I will load an entire bobbin storage case and that way I can tat away while my husband drives us to our destination and reloading the bobbin is a breeze as all I do is remove one and replace with another. Also by using the sewing machine bobbins you can wind the bobbin on a sewing machine or the small bobbin winder and the bobbins are wound properly and won't cause the issues you have had with the aerlit's. If you choose to go with the Moonlits I have heard rumours through the tatting vine that they are available at Hobby Lobby in Stores in some locations. Hope this information helps you. Happy Tatting

You said you lived in Georgia. Palmettos comes every year same place. Toccoa, Ga. It is part of the international community of Tatters. Commonly called IOLI. There is smaller conventions around like Fingerlakes, they are in New York, Lace days in Indiana, Fringe tatters in Canada and so forth. Hi Carol. This demonstration is not a scmr. It is a needle tatted true ring. 2 different rings. A true ring most represents the ring made by shuttle tatters.

Hi Maja. Once you finish the true ring both threads will be at the bottom as with doing a regular needle tatted ring. Just when you turn your work to continue to the next chain you don't have to tie the knot to hold the stitches in place. The true ring locks the stitches in place just like when shuttle tatters make a ring. When using a shuttle you do not have to tie a knot after each ring and chain. The true ring helps eliminate some of the knot tieing needle tatters have to do. Hope that explains it for you. I will be doing some new videos soon showing how to do techniques using a needle that shuttle tatters use to help make your needle tatting look like it was shuttle tatted so look for them in the future. hi can i ask you what size of thread to use for a bginner to tatting as ive been using a size 8 which i feel its to thin for my likeing as you cant really see the work as good.
Hi Joanne, Thank you for watching. The size that is best for a beginner is a size 10 thread or you could even go up to a size 3. In the videos I use a size 3 crochet cotton. It is put out by Coats and Clark and is sold in the US under the name Aunt Lydia. It is a good thread to start with as it is inexpensive and it comes in a nice size. As you begin tatting you will be making alot of mistakes but with those mistakes comes learning. Once you get the techniques down and know how to work the rings and chains evenly then I suggest getting Lizbeth thread which is sold thru Handy Hands as well as Hobby Lobby in store. Some of the needlework stores are even beginning to carry it as well. It is a really nice 6 cord thread. I hope this helps you. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Happy Tatting

However with more experience in the video making process and new equipment the videos I am making now are so much better. What do you do when your tail thread runs out?
Hi Claire and thank you for watching. When your tail thread runs out you will add more thread. You will use your tatting needle and sew in the ends then cut the thread attach new thread and begin where you left off. Make sure you end at where a ring and chain meet. That way you can loop through the ring and tie the shoelace trick to get your threads in the right position if necessary. If not loop through the ring at the base thread your needle and begin tatting.
