    In Europe, you can get a PPP in a small pot for 6 euro, a bigger plant for about 15 euro. The prices are dropping, but on eBay people are still trying to scam others by pumping their prices. Im not agains selling your plants/cuttings, but im against buying a plant for 10 euro and then selling a cutting for 20 euro the day after. This drives me mad

      Costa farms is releasing them in the US for $16.99 I think so the prices will continue to go down. Really nice ones with consistent variegation and super dark leaves or large ones will still be pricey but no where near what they were. Drives me crazy when people do that too!

      That's so true! They have a motherplant picture in front, write great variegated plant cutting, or even don't write cutting, and the real thing you see on the last 2 pictures of 5. And it's a almost reverted uprooted cutting without and new growth. Just a fresh cutting.
      To see the motherplant is good though, because then you can maybe see of what section of the plant the cutting is taken from. But in most of the times, I found, they just sell the shit parts with the lowest chance to grow nicely.

    Back when ppp were going for crazy prices my local nursery was selling small reverted or low variegates for $10 and cutting with low or reversion for $5. That’s the only justifiable price in my opinion for such a high risk and I am in complete agreement. Definitely let myself get swept up before in the variegation hype😅

    This is advice that all new planties need to hear. Unfortunately, most of us learn best through experience. Two years on and I'm still growing my reverted Jessenia that the seller said "just needs better lighting" than she was able to give it. So for $35 I essentially got a green pothos. It does tease me with random and occasional variegation on single leaves, just enough to keep me interested and not toss it.

    This is really good info, especially for people like me who are just starting to get into more uncommon/rare plants. I was given a reverted mojito syngonium cutting and the two newest leaves actually have variegation on them. The lady who gave me the cutting said it may or may not stay solid green. That would suck for someone who doesnt know any better to buy a reverted cutting/plant in hopes that it would get its variegation back and it doesnt.

    I feel like TC seedlings are kind of like the “new” unrooted cuttings of yesteryear. It’s a roll of the dice. I got a TC Thai Constellation and looked for one that specifically said it was the exact one pictured and rooted. It is in fact and it looks good, but still it’s really tiny of course so a lot can happen before those roots really get going! It has good variegation on the 4 tiny leaves it has, but they’re like an inch long so….we’ll seeeee😂

    7:40 I put my Florida Beauty on a moss pole and it rooted into it right away and is fully rooted from every node now. It was one of the fastest plants that rooted into their pole actually. I also saw that Kaylee Ellen mentioned how bad Florida Beauty would root for her and I'm like ??? mine I rooting meters in a month lol.

      I think part of the issue that she has is that she roots everything in LECA and that’s not always going to be the best choice. This video is from so long ago but my Florida beauty is doing really well on a pole now too! I don’t think I’d ever take an unrooted cutting and put it in LECA though!
      This is so funny because even though the market on variegated plants has basically crashed, the same thing is happening now again in a different font with anthurium hybrids lol

    😄 I totally agree 👍
    And there are alot of different kind of seller's, like some just write 3-5 words in the description, and some write a book yo make it look better.
    And I also experienced myself, they send you gift cuttings within your order to not get bad, or a as bad review, as they would.
    I have sold plants and cuttings too, but I only sell them in a condition I would be pleased to receive them. And if they are not in that shape, just don't sell it. Or maybe make clear, there is a low chance and sell it for a very low price. That's better as to throw it, but it's also better for you and your reviews and credibility.
    But in general, sell plants you like to get on your own.
    Like I send a dubia cutting rooted with 15cm new growth from Germany to Italy. It was 10 days in shipping and didn't get there, so I refunded, but then it got there 2 days ago, and the buyer did send me back the complete refund. I didn't ask for, I didn't had the right to get it back anyway. I did ask, why he did send the money back, because the plant must have been half dead while 12 days in shipping, but I I only got a good review, but never a answer in what shape the cutting was. But my guess, it was OK, because I got the refund back.

One of the Florida beauties was not the seller and just bad luck but I since found out the mid cut was cut due to reversion 🙄. I've also had a monstera which was far too variegated and the leaves just died back. This is one of the reasons ive gone off variegated plants... Too much stress.

      If your albo is pushing small leaves it’s likely looking to climb, not getting enough light, not being watered consistently enough or needs more fertilizer. Not sure where you are located, but if the smaller growth came out over the winter then you may see better results now they growing season is underway (in the northern hemisphere at least). Okay so I have a really good offer for a florida beauty. It is a mit cutting with two new leaves but the first is all green. The second and newest is variegated. I'm afraid that the probability of it converting to green is too high. The newest has really nice varigation (~60% and its all over and not in one spot) and is still hardening of, so I can't see if the third one will be variegated. It is already kinda rooted.Should I still buy it?

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  2 роки тому +1

      So it’s pretty common in Florida beauty for the variegation to mostly run up one side of the stem. As long as you are comfortable with the price, then go for it. The Florida beauty I showed in the video is my plant. It was giving amazing variegation and now all green. I’m not worried that it’s fully reverted. Just be aware that Florida beauty are hard to root so try airlayering if you ever need to cut it back if the variegation stops. I would make sure the price is right though. I wouldn’t pay too dollar for that.

    same thing happened to me with also monstera cutting. I bought from a plant store in the UK. When it arrived the aerial roots were rotting. how can an arial root be rotted anyway? when I cut off the rotted part, then the stem started rotting, and after 5-6 weeks the cutting turned into a mash. would never buy this again £100 down the drain. plus the variegation was nothing like the pictures - it was minimal. total scam. and you buy with no option for return.

    I think we're all adults here and can make those decisions for ourselves. When someone buys a chunk or a wet stick and it turns that it isn't what it was represented to be that's a different story but we all assume the risk when we buy things like this online. We know from jump that it may not end up the way that we wanted to. I have had tremendous luck with wet sticks and chonks and I have been able to turn tiny pieces of hardly anything into beautiful plants that I wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise.

    I hope this doesn’t come off as rude feel like a lot of people don‘t really understand how variegation works… A bunch of people have literally been attacked in my local plant groups because they were selling highly variegated specimen for more than other people sell their „few specs of white/yellow“ plants. It‘s kind of frustrating because a lot of people really seem to think that the basically no variegation plants and the high variegation plants are just one and the same when they aren‘t 🙃🙃 A lot of beginners in my country really seem to buy them for the plants name thinking it‘ll eventually „come back“ but don‘t really care for quality

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  2 роки тому

      Not rude AT ALL! I have so many opinions about this exact thing! That’s why I always say that high quality specimens are still going to be a LOT and getting good color off a reverted specimen is like playing a scratcher card. High quality variegated plants are RARE! They’re expensive because sometime likely put a lot of time and effort into cutting a sport and stabilizing the color. Very good point!

      I mean, if you would like to create a resource that goes into excruciating detail on how exactly you’ve achieved your 100% success rate water rooting albos of all levels of variegation, including when a cutting is ready, how much aerial root you look for, how you sanitize cuttings, how long they sit before going into the water, how to take into consideration if the cutting has been shipped, if the leaf or aerial root has died off, whether you use an air stone or peroxide or distilled or tap water, what else you put in the water, whether to use growth hormone, whether you cover your vessel, how much light/humidity you give, the temperature and any other potential factors I’ve left off, I’m sure people would find that super helpful! People need to stop with the idea of needing that 'it' plant and needing it 'now'! Go back to just researching plants and buying what delights you. Think about getting into collecting. Collecting hoyas, or orchids or aroids. Trading plants and not selling. Just enjoying plants for the sake of the plants. That's the only way prices will drop to where they used to be. That Monstera Albo Variegata used to be sold at Home Depot in a large pot for $45 and was passed by because people realized they had no room for it. People still have no room for it but will buy it because it's the 'it' plant, so it's selling well above what it should. If people don't stop the prices will just keep rising and the scams will continue.

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet

      Hahaha what price plants “should” sell for and buying plants at Home Depot or a box store vs. a specialty plant shop or from a purge is a wholeeeeeee different conversation. The plant market is super wonky.
      Also when were Albo monstera sold at Home Depot? Costa farms is having enough trouble getting Thai constellations out. I’ve never heard of Albo monstera being mass produced by a box store.

    • @greymomma
      @greymomma 2 роки тому

      @@PlantFriendDownTheStreet in the 70's up to early 2000's you would find a few come into Home Depot, along with the Thai Constellation. They were calling them Swiss Cheese plants but most just had tags that said 'tropical plant' in them. They weren't massed produced in extreme amounts and were still considered 'rare' but the prices were only in the $50's for a 6" or up to about $150 for a gallon. Problem that Costa is having is that they need enough to handle the crazy demand. Back then that wasn't a problem. The market could handle the slow growth rate. They didn't need to fill the stores with one plant species. Or expect that plant to sell out in a day. Especially without social media to spark the 'it' plant. Similar to the Philodendron Pink Princess which sold at $15 for large mature plant. Some bought it some didn't. It sat on the shelf for days like a pretty pothos. Fell out of favor because of the fact that it reverts easily. I have mine from early 2000. Could've made some real money on it. LOL
