My doc block michelle x dark crystal with burgundy emergent leaves and red sinus was very worth $25, so I'm a fan of hybrids and accessibility. Even if I prefer some of the more "purebred" varieties I have a mental block about spending more than $30 on plants these days
Loved this one! The bit about certain breeds are picky about what they can cross pollinate with was really interesting & new to me! Always love learning technical stuff like that.
From my understanding, most velvet type anthurium are from the ‘Cardiolonchium’ section of anthurium while Clarinervium was recently (past couple years) was placed in section ‘Andiphilum’ which include species like andicola, parvispathum, berriozabalense, lancetillense, leuconeurum, umbrosum, and pedatoradiatum!
Which brings up the topic of growers adding value to plants that are “cross-sectional” hybrids. These hybrids are very rare to occur because just the right combination of DNA from both plants has to come together. I’m not saying its impossible, but it is impossible to confirm unless you have thousands of dollars worth of genetic sequencing equipment.
Yesssss this kind of thing makes my lizard brain so happy thanks for this! I eventually want to look into the details of this more but haven’t gotten to it yet. Do you know if paleo botanists have figured out how long ago the lineages diverged? I’m super curious because depending on when they think they diverged, some really interesting things were going on biogeographically
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet I haven’t come across any family trees that show the divergence, mostly because you need a fossil to calibrate the timeline. I’ve seen this some for plants in the catalpa family, but not for anthurium. What I do know is that anthurium most likely evolved from Potheae, or the true pothos family!
Very good to know! I did some quick googling about anthurium fossils and the only thing I could on Google was about fossilized pollen from the Cretaceous so I’m hoping there maybe more info somewhere behind a paywall but I haven’t had the time to start trying to figure it out yet. Thanks so much for your comment, this was really fun!

Wow 😳 loved the video! Thanks for all the information about Anthuriums. I love them but I haven't had the opportunity to take care of one yet and your video was super educational when it came to seeing what they offer in my local market. Thank you so much!
I’m so glad you liked it! For a first anthurium, I really recommend a Chrystallinum x Magnificum! They are super resilient and have all the best qualities of both parent plants. Best of luck!
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet I just saw the notification of your reply. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll seriously take it into account and give you an update when I have one 💖
Really interesting video that made me considered what ive bought in the past😵💫. Would love to understand where you research your topics. Im waiting for a Delta to arrive from another youtuber and your making me think about if i got the right one🙏
I’m just in a lot of Facebook and Reddit groups and I’ve met a lot of nice people over the years who have been kind enough to give me their time and answers questions and help me learn It probably wouldn’t be too hard to figure out… PM me on Instagram if you want to talk about it further. I know of one youtuber who has one that is for sure a true clone. Did you buy a seedling or an offset? I know that person has pollinated theirs but idk if it was selfed or a hybrid
Way back during pandemic, i started to hoard plants esp philodendrons and even upgraded to variegated ones. But then space is a problem with philos or monsteras. So i started to shift on Anthoriums like Hookerii, jenmanii, superboom and other rounded leafer anthoriums… and i just love darker base
I would say that if you’re buying seeds - warning: not all seeds sprout. Some are just duds. Also, some of the plants that germinate from them are weak and would normally die in nature. I would never recommend paying too much for seeds.
Especially if they are selfed! I had soooo many selfed seeds that weren't viable and just threw out malformed leaves or completely white ones... 😩 I think it is because of the limited gene pool that they are often not doing so... well...
My guess is that either the mother plant is clarinervium that self pollinated or it’s a bench hybrid. Doesn’t mean the seller isn’t trustworthy. That happens all the time, even to the pros.
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet very possible!! Mama was for sure the Dorayaki but ya never know what could have happened 😂 If it’s truly what it was ID’d as, I’ll tag you on IG 💚 Thanks for the awesome anthurium content queen 🥰🤗
Unfortunately, there won’t be any way to know for sure but Doryakis are beautiful and cross with all kinds of cool stuff so I’m sure it will be a nice plant!
Probably not because I don’t think it would get very many views and it would be a ton of work BUT if you’re interested in learning about stuff like that, I highly recommend joining some facebook groups! There are some artists who have made graphics with illustrations of all the varieties of different species and they are very cool
Good advice! I'm hoping I didn't get "taken"...😮 I just bought a pap fort Sherman x ralph lymann crossed with BVEP 'felix' for $250. Leaf is about 5 inches with a couple smaller. I should have watched this video first!
Did the seller show photos of the parents? That’s a pretty fancy cross and usually when I see crosses like that the seller def shows the parents so that buyers can envision what the possibilities could be!
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet No photos of parents... oh well, I just have to hope it's healthy and beautiful! I'll definitely be more careful in the future
Anthuriums are like dog breeds or agriculture. And they're being selectively bred for desired characteristics too. But as you eluded to, just like in agriculture/pet trade, there is Show quality, Breeder quality, and Pet quality. Known lines of champion breeds are highly coveted and aptly priced, but the puppy mill in town can give you the same breeds for the fraction of the price but the pups'lll be inferior in all ways to include vigor & health. Fortunately the ubiquity of TC has leveled the playing field and really put extremely rare plants in everyday peoples' homes 🙂 At this point I'd like to order a Purple-Pillow-Triangle-Leaf Anthurium w/ no veins showing.
That’s exactly right and a great analogy, and that purple pillow anthurium sounds beautiful! Hopefully we see some that look like that coming out soon.
In the current market, Anthurium hybrids and seedlings seem like a minefield of soft-scams from sellers desperately grasping for revenue as the plant market collapses after the pandemic bubble. Hard pass from me. I'll pick up some scraps and rehabs in 2024, lol.
Very true but there are still deals out there and I find that the best ones are usually local. 2024 is going a crazy year for anthurium though omg I can’t wait.

This was based on a genetic study, so that supports your theory that the parentage of the two diverged millions of years ago!
