    Another great video, Drea. Love how your channel isn't just "latest greatest ___________" (specimen, substrate, fad) but a collection of reference videos. I think it was Jeff at Everything Plants that showed how to wrap moss (? can't remember) around those gawky alocasia necks, so that roots came off and then the whole plant could be put in a deeper pot; not sure if he also did a chop 'n' prop as well. I grow alocasia and colocasia outside in our mild Puget Sound climate, bringing them in when/if temps fall to 32*F. Enough rambling ...

    I have 6 juvenile Alocasias. They’re doing well. They just want more moisture than my other plants, so I put a layer of pebbles on top & they stay moist much longer 😊

      I agree. I use super chunky mix and water more often. They also love love fertilizer. The only time I have lost a leaf is when I let them go to dry. I have also saved a mature one from root rot. I cut the corm in half to cut away the part with rot. I cleaned the rotted one up and they both continued to grow. The roots love a lot of moisture and oxygen. Also when they go to dry is when they seem to attract spider mites.

    love your videos! beneficial bugs :) i have pretty exclusively used beneficial bugs for the last 18 months or so and absolutely love them. i do the sachets and also Nematodes. everything is easy to do and has kept my collection safe. they are well worth the expense if you have a collection.

    Alocasia have been difficult to keep thriving for me but they do give you several opportunities to bring them back from the edge of death. 😂 I’ve had a love/hate relationship with alocasia. I had a Polly and a Black velvet at one time. They’d both die back and regrow and on and on until I lost them. At one point before I finally lost the polly I thought it was dead and because I didnt know about corms I emptied the pot out in the yard and the next spring a little polly plant popped up in that spot. I was flabbergasted! 🤯😂
    The spider mites and the 1-3 leaf club (or even no leaf club) are what keep me from buying very many. Out of about 150-200 plants I have 2 alocasia, a variegated frydek and a non-variegated frydek. They’ve both had a rough time and died back to leafless stems when I pot them up in pon but are coming back now. They definitely teach you patience. Thanks for the great video. I’ll keep this in mind for when (if 😂) my alocasia get bigger.

      @@lifepathjourney3638 I don’t like that stuff. Im old school. Algae grows & you can’t see the water level. My friend grows hers that way, but Im averse to it. That stuff wasn’t available 45 years ago. I prefer the proper mix of substrate. I’m old 😂

The other one, I can't remember the name 😳 dropped every leaf she had few days after her arrival.. I took her out the pot and gave her Leca instead, and within a month she had new leafs.. I had to forgive her, she's only a baby 👶 the corms from my Wentii is in Leca too having 2 leafs each.. There are 13 corms 😳

    What a great video. Thanks so much for information re not harvesting the corma.I have seen other people use pot extenders to make existing pots taller. I have also seen people reuse a clear starbucks cup by cutting the side and wrapping around the base of the stem. Ive only seen this for anthurium and never an alocasia so maybe it wouldnt work 😅

    Could you air layer the top & then cut it off?

    • @AlohaPlantLife
      @AlohaPlantLife  9 днів тому +2

      That would work as well as long as once you cut it off after it’s done getting roots you let it callus over on that open end well before potting it up. You’d have to keep the roots moist while letting it callous over too.

    Have you discussed what can be done with syngoniums when they get leggy? I tried to grow them on moss poles and it didn't look great. There were gaps between the leaves and the stems got woody.

    I keep trying with Alocasias, but not hard enough! I have a small Silver Dragon and a Polly. The Polly I’ve had for a few years, but it dies back and now I only have one corm with one leaf and tiny leaf that is trying to put out. Another smaller corm wasn’t doing anything. I’ll try your bottle cap method again. I tried it nearly two years ago after your video first came out, but I forgot to cover them and the water kept drying up before I remembered to check!

    • @AammaK
      @AammaK 9 днів тому +1

      What part exactly? I think they look just beautiful, like live plants. To each their own, I guess. I mean, it's fine to give up plants you no longet want to take care of. But they won't be at their prime infinitely, they go trough cycles and often come back around even.

    • @LeafyConversations
      @LeafyConversations 9 днів тому

      @@AammaK What part? The long corm specifically. Each plant collector has a limit on what is right for them and I am just saying “for me” I wouldn’t keep it around at this stage. Of course, if the time comes I am as fortunate to have a Alocasia for 2 years I may change my tune. 🥹
