The answer is clearly “the shiny we SHOULD have gotten”.
Omg I would have love this for a shiny wouldn't even evolve it
@@spicypepperz you could catch it on crystal version
@@aas2009 this just unlocked a memory holy shit
Would've been one of my favorite shiny if it was this one. I feel that for shinys their just lazy cause most are varying gold tones green and pink.
@@leonelgalan9431 most of the gen 1-2 shinies are going to be boring gold/green because of the limited display technology or something in the games
Turns out it was the first Terastallize Pokémon we saw 😆
Ice type onix
NAW, IT CANT BE A TERRA TYPE, IT'S MISSING THE HAT.
THERES EVEN TERRA CRYSTALS IN THE CAVE!!!
Yea my theory is that the crystals actually predated the tera crystals in paldea
ice tera type onix
Wasted almost a year of my childhood farming for it in crystal cave because everyone said you could get it there.
Same lol
Bro, imagine if Brock was able to catch this.
He would've made his original Onix, then later Steelix jealous.
Bro. Bro..... BRO. BROOOO.
Brock would've loved it
It could have been a pure steel type, kind of a middle ground to Onix and Steelix. Steel isn't weak to water, but is weak to fire. Makes more sense than ice type anyways, being that it's in a cave full of minerals.
But there are minerals in water tho
i actually think its stuck in evolution normally you trade it with Metal Coat/pressure in the core(pokedex) that would expalin is blue shiny body and steel type for the weakness
Probably a Shiny Ditto transforms into a Onix
@@adamtaurusragnathebloodedg8407 then again in the anime it's clear that shiny ditto when transforms copies the exact color of the Pokemon even in the games it happens too
@@floofdoodle4349 😮
It is an onix that is almost evolved into steelix. There was a pokedex entry stating that it takes onix 100 years to evolve into steelix. After it's body has hardened into crystal.
So all these theories are basically debunked now? xD
@@GoldenKirby pretty much lol
How did Brock’s onix evolve then
@@mathijs8379 he hardened his body with brock's tears from never getting laid lol
@@mathijs8379 by catching one that was already 100 or so years into its evolution
Apparently he was a teralized Pokémon. Mystery solved after 15 years.
Assuming onix is confirmed for the game tho
That’s only in Paldea, no where else

I never really considered rock types to be LITERALLY made out of rocks , more like they have a rocky exoskeleton
I always consider rock side to have attribute of rock/mineral. What i mean by that is a rock type behave/react in similar way when something happened (such as when being in contact with fire a rock type pokemon would burn as well as a rock would regardless of wether their skin is made of rock or not) and thus a rock type pokemon may: be composed of rock, possessing exoskeleton that are mainly composed of mineral instead of Lignin, a skin/hide that behave in similar fashion to that of a rock/mineral, covered in rock/mineral protusion, etc.
Cool story bro.
No such thing as Rock Type... they are called Fighting Type.. they use fighting energy.
@@floridajames04
By that logic, about every Pokemon would be a "Fighting Type" then. -_-
@@ElysetheEevee I'm talking about the tcg idiot.
Also i really love that ability name "Crystalline Body."
Bro! Love me a good Crystal Onix theory!
Such a cool Pokémon! Still want it to get canonized in the games!
@@GatorEX Agreed! Would love to hunt down a crystal onix in a game and figure out its actual typing
@@WolfDragonTamer It would be cool if one of the games had you hunting rare pokemon like crystal onix, either in the main story or in post game.
@@GatorEX Imagine if it was steel and ice type.
Apparently, the first Terestal in Pokémon history! Crystal Onix is game-canon at last :D
Says who?
Tera only works in Paldea dude
Crystal Onix would've been a great shiny/event pokemon for the gen 2 remakes.
Another possible answer: Onyx used to be Ice or steel type but they got extinct, something like the Hisuian pokemon. Crystal Onyx is just a region varíant before they were cool
I would lose my mind if in Legends Arceus we run into a Crystal Onyx.
Ice/Rock and Ice/Steel (Steelix) would be a cool type combo tbh
omg I literally just thought “what if crystal onix was the pre form of the onix we all know but got extinct”
This Theory kinda sounds the Delta species typing from the EX era of the TCG...... The Theory for that is That all Pokemon have a little of every typing in their DNA..... As they evolve into species, they become specialized to one or two typings. In the TCG these Delta species Pokemon live in a Island with radiation, and that radiation changes their typing based on genetic memory......
I always thought the Crystal Onix would appear in that ice cave on Lorelei's home island in Frlg as a kid.
u sad? play blazing emerald.
@@holey5065 yup you can encounter the onix in shoal cave
WHY DID YOU PAUSE? THERE'S NOTHING HERE
That's what it says for those wondering.
It's still worth the effort to pause that millisecond pic, because *Misty* . ❤️😆
took me 3 tries to catch that little flash.
I went through the trouble of changing the playback speed for THIS!?!
This version of Onyx should have came back in Sun and Moon. It would have been perfect in the mountain area that was a volcano.
but its weak to fire why would it live in a volcano? why not the icy victory road?
@@corberus3119 well, how else would you make diamond? You put carbon, in this case, under extreme heat and pleasure. Thus our Crystal Onyx would be fire resistant.
@@Qardo Is onix with a i not Y
Most definitely a regional version of Onix before region forms were a thing. Wish they have it in future games!
What if it's made of glass
Glass doesn't explode when it toutches water and it melts with fire
well, glass commonly has quartz which is a crystal, so you are tecnically right
@@popcornisawesum also in the episode we can see that the old man's glass sculptures are the same color that crystal onix
So crystal basically
Glass can explode, if exposed to a decent amount of heat, then a decent amount of cold.
If only this was onix shiny color instead of that ugly green
the Terastalization xD
Man looking fresh in the video 😎 + Crystal Onix was peak anime filler 👌🏻
I’m ready for the Summer Vibes ✌️😎
True answer: Crystal Onix is just a Ditto that only saw an Onix once and when he tried to transform into one the only reference he really had was memory and the nearby crystals, so he got the typing and some of the looks wrong >:3
Stfu you donf make sense
Crystal onix= inverse battles..?
Oragnge island= foreshadowing..?
I absolutely love this episode and
Crystal type pokemon are Awsome
I read a really cool thing about onix. I dont remember where but it said when one of onix's rocks breaks off it will replace it with another rock. This onix probably replaced it with crystal.
Some fan games like Insurgence actually have a "Crystal" type that can't occur naturally or if they can are one-of-a-kind
I for one am always okay with people giving Tracy some attention. He was such an underrated side character.
He was cool. Miss him
Came to this video cuz theirs a change they could reveal this was a terestal form
A foreshadowing to a future game mechanic that's what it was
Nah
It's a shame that these special Pokemon from the anime weren't added to the game. It would have been interesting to see them show up as event/mythical Pokemon.
Bro this is the first video of yours I've seen and the pokequiz on the middle of the video brought back memories of me being a kid and watching Pokemon.
Bro such a throw back even with the commercials, new subscriber
This has to be the best channel to find on a Saturday morning 🙌🏽
Onix has always been my favorite pokemon. 20 years now so thanks for this awesome video!
I wonder if Game Freak is dipping into the anime for generational gimmicks, using crystal onix for the concept of terastalize, dynamax with giant Dragonite, pokemon caught in dark balls for shadow pokemon, i cant think of anything for z-moves, mega evolution is just more evolution
There was this time where Mist saw a mysterious pokemon that matches exatly a mega gyarados
One thing I didn't see mentioned in this video is that the Onix may be made of a very specific kind of crystal. There are some gemstones that are vulnerable to heat such as Aquamarine, which can crack when heated. Aquamarine is a blueish gemstone that can be easily damaged by fire. It also has the word "aqua" in the name that would draw a correlation between the Onix and it's aquatic nature.
Edit: Another thing to consider is thermal shock. If you heat or cool a gemstone too quick or slowly, you can crack a stone that would otherwise easily stand the change in temp.
It's ice steel. Clearly. The emphasis on the weakness to fire was highlighted within the battle. It reaaaally didn't like it.
Or just ice, they’re not thaaaat consistent with weaknesses like that
...what if it was steel type? I mean, there are crystals that are used as ores, and water does barely anything to most crystals, while fire is... well, not so well received by quite a few of them.
I think steel ice makes sense
From today's perspective, it makes sense, but keep in mind it was an episode of Orange Isles, which means it aired before the release of gen 2. Back then, steel type still didn't exist.
@@LordIvul
Japan:
First Episode of the Orange Isles part:
Released 28.01.1999
Pokémon Gold and Silver:
Released 21.11.1999
I mean, yeah, you're right.
Although Pokémon Red and Blue came out in Japan on 27.02.1996, so there's a 3 year timeframe. The difference between the airing of the episode, and the release of the game was 8 months, so the games were probably already programmed, so the idea of the Steel type might've already been known at the time the first episode of the Orange Isles was produced
So, it might've been incorporated into the episode as a mystery/Easter egg/hint to steel type?
Also, the part with the Orange Isles is also happening between Kanto and Johto, and Steelix was introduced in Johto, so that Onix might've also been in the process of evolving, and implementing the Steel-type as an Easter Egg in this way?
@@volcarona8401 it may be that the team behind anime knew what is coming in gen 2, we can't really say. But regarding the 3 year window you mentioned, keep in mind that around 97-98 the development pretty much restarted, with most of original pokemon designs being discarded and world map completely redone as we've seen with Spaceworld demos. It really is hard to tell at which point steel type was conceived and if production team of anime knew anything about it before starting their work on Johto series.
@@LordIvul The anime developers knew because Ho-Ho and togepi appeared in the original anime.
Crystal & Sword dex:
Jp: ちちゅうを ほりすすみながら いろんな かたいものを とりこみ がんじょうな からだをつくる。
Traslated: While digging around, it absorbs various hard things to create a strong body.
Basically that onix "absorbed" and made its body with the crystals of that cave. I assume the crystal pokedex tried to explain this onix, since the game was released in December 2000, and this season in 1999. So i think this is the best answer we have.
they predicted gen 9 gimik 23 years ago
I wish there was more unique Pokémon like crystal onyx
I think that’s one of the advantages of fan games.
There is that one island in Orange Island that had all the pink Pokemon
If you're going by game logic you could say it's an Onix with a Metal Coat all over its body and that it's about to become Steelix.
But the reality is that it's just a Filler Pokémon meant to help inspire a Glass Maker and introduce Marill into the main cast.
I've been waiting for Game Freak to make a crystal Onix since this episode. I was thinking it would be an ice type. Regional variant.
"Did Moses part the sea with his Beyblade" 😂😂 I'm weak
It was a Terastallized Onix
Video: Why did you pause there's nothing here?
Me: There's always something
The fact that it cames from the water tho.
Moses and his beyblade..I forgot about that episode it made me crack up a little when you said that
And then there was PBB with Crystal Onix, Crystal Steelix, and Mega Crystal Steelix
Bruh the memories
I remember years ago, some UA-camr did a video of a Sun & Moon Randomizer, and one of his Pokemon was Crystal Onix, that evolved into a Ruby Steelix.
Ttar!
Back when Pokémon actually had some character. Now we have goh.
I can imagine another form or evolution branch for rock types where they can develop crystalline cores (or fissures that show on the surface like Groudon/Kyogre's glowy orb markings) and gain Fairy as a secondary typing.
Fire resists Fairy, so the crystal onyx could've been worried it's attacks wouldn't be effective,
or just straight up scared of the fire.
I'd like to think it's just simply its own unique typing. I like the idea of having a common pokemon with a distinct variation that gives it almost unexplainable mystery.
Missed opportunity to make Alolan or Galarian Onix
Ieeeeuw nooo
Lol got trolled by the pause.
Oh my god the nostalgic kids WB pokemon quiz I remember waking up just to watch pokemon
New Type exclusively for Crystallized forms of Rock Pokemon; Glass
Any Rock-Type in a Crystallized form will be Pure Glass, shedding a ground type if it has one. It keeps any other type, however.
Type matchups;
Weak; Fighting, Ground, Steel, Grass, Ice, Fire
Resists; Water, Flying, Poison, Normal, Rock
Immune to; Electric
Omg I could still remember watching this episode as a kid. It's been a decade though🤩🥺
That Moses beyblade line got me 😂
I remember coming across this in a manga store when I was a kid.
it wasn't aired on TV yet but crystal onix's existence was published in manga.
I told my classmates the next day about this but no one believed it. Everybody called me a liar and made fun of me. The worst part is that a friend who was in the store
with me saw the same thing but didn't step up to defend me. He was probably afraid that he'd be targeted too. It was a sad experience.
Pbb players remember trying to catch this onix
I never played PBB on Roblox but I wish there will be regional forms in loomian legacy like Crystal onix
Damn that episode was a blast from the past
With the new Pokemon games trailer out with the new feature which is crystal forms...
Coincidence? I think not!!
It's most likely a rare varient with either a ice or steel typing. The anime plays around with this notion before alola. Like the snowman snorlax, the psychic surfing pikachu and the golden sudowodo. All these are varients with different typings.
Now that Scarlet & Violet are out, people are re-talking about crystal Onix & linking it to terastallization
Is my fantasy dwelling before bed tonight.
I would say it’s like the first recorded instance of a regional variant but those weren’t introduced until WAY later so
I decided to bid to watch the orange Islands arc which led me to hear and I got a minute I got to agree with what you said.
Assuming rock pokemon eat rocks it could be that it was eating only crystals and became crystal in the same way flamingos turn pink from shrimp
This was definitely a childhood flashback
i dont think it had a type. maybe it was made of some kind of glass? water cant hurt it but fire can melt it just like the sculptures they made. if it was a steel type water would damage it too
@@billuminati3867 what's that supposed to mean?
I think it’s more along the lines of it feeding on the crystals of the cave. Rock comes from earth and so does crystal so most likely this was a normal onyx that upon feeding on the crystals of the cave for a long time, then ended up adapting and of course since crystal does not yield to water like a rock does, then water does nothing to it and in fact, it actualy likes water very much. This could also make it somewhat fragile depending on the composition of the crystals
Maybe it's made of like a diamond substance so it would be a resistant to water but semi weak to fire like glass or maybe it's just made out of glass
It'd be really cool if they ever decided to distribute a Crystal Onix for an event potentially giving it Dry Skin, Seeing as it already has unique stats from its evolution it could find a nieche in competetive play
I mean it seems like at the time it was just a crystal Onix now I think you could retcon it as an early regional variant probably with an ability like you say give an evolution and your good.
I just hope gf put those pther color variants fromm the main game like the pink rhyhorn
But isn't Dry Skin was introduced in Gen IV? I love the theory tho 😊 plus I loved Pokemon Naranja romhack because of the Crystal Onix, but I've never played a finished Naranja, maybe I can see one now. 😆
Abilities weren't even introduced until Gen 3 and this episode took place during the late stage of the Gen 1 era, when there weren't even plans for there to be a Generation beyond Gen 2 yet.
I say crystal onix not only could be ice but glacial ice. Which is more dense, colder, older & can have that bluish hue. I imagine crystal Onix would have the move Polish (or Rock Polish?), or similar trait to give it that additional shine.
“It’s an Onix, but blue.”
Me: :O
Crystal Onix more like "Water Onix"
Onix was my very first shiny Pokemon back in Silver. I had no idea what it was beyond the fact that it had the same animation loop that red Gyarados had. A little later, I saw the Crystal Onix episode and so then I thought I had a crystal Onix. When I told my classmates, they were all very jealous. Shinnies were brand new to that generation so no one knew any better 😆
Moses parted the Red Sea with a beyblade. Nobody can tell me anything different 😂😂
nintendo has just give us the answer
Head-cannon: it's a regional variant, though very rare though and therefore undiscovered in that region: Alola would make sense as they are also tropical islands!
This one swam all the way to the Orange Islands and made a home there in a crystal cave. Sometimes even coastal water creatures will swim lonnnnnggggggg distances and find a new place.
Don't think it could have originated in the Orange Islands as even they all thought it was weird. 🤔
I have another theory, involving its ability, I think that it just inverts its type affinities (weaknesses become resistances and vide-versa). Imagine an inverse battle with a regular Onix.
2:26
Lol the MFB anime was so wierd
hahaha Violet and Scarlet have the answer
I always assumed, even as a kid, that Crystal Onix came to be that way from ingesting the unique soils and rocks of the area, including the crystals. It's enough to suspend disbelief for me with that explanation.
The Moses thingy is real, bigbury-on-sea's (Devon, eng) beach does the Moses thing when the tide is out, and you can walk to an island
I think the typing isn't really important, and the dry skin ability is a nice idea, but just remember that ash's pikachu beat brock's onix in the anime when it got wet lol.
This guy looks like he wants you to invite to the battle frontier
I wish we'd had an official appearance of the Orange Islands in the games. Would have been cool to experience things like Crystal Onyx.
Time for an actual crystal typing. Heck, they added Steel as a type.
Perhaps it was an Onix transitioning into a steelix
A metal coat
DUDE THE FUCKING NOSTALGIA 💯😩
"What is Snorlax' most powerful attack?"
Me: Giga Impact
0:56 Marisa in Pokemon pog
1000 years turns a Onix into
maybe it's an ice regional variant with the ability dry skin or some other ability that makes it immune to water but weak to fire, the only type combination I can think of that can resist water and is weak to fire is grass/ice, although it probably would not explain the shiny crystal body
Marill? No, no no, I think you mean Pikablu!
The onix came out like get the hell out my home!!!!!
Crystal Onix can very easily work as a regional form. Though I'm not sure what region that'd be.
It being a different type would make this work even more.
