I have a theory that the reason the Sun/Moon Mega Dex entries are so dark is because the Alola Region lost a war against Kalos due to Mega Evolution. All the dex entries about the Pokemon being merciless to its opponents could be first-hand accounts of Alolans seeing them in battle. The ones about the mons being in pain, or killing its trainer, could either be myths (hard to tell when you’re busy running for your life), or they may be Alola’s botched attempts to recreate Mega Evolution. This leads to Alola’s defeat, and the demonization of Mega Evolution in the Dex. Or it could just be the Rotom in your dex messing with you. It is part ghost, after all.
Reminder that we at least confirm 2 timelines, the original where no one knows what infinity energy is, then those that find it and start wars and technology booms. So these games may just be in their own universe relating to eachother?
@@Mcs22398 Yeah true, they did state that in Crystal (alongside the fact that the Beedrill kidnaps its victim to be brutally murdered by the rest of the hive), but I just wanted to point out how brutal Mega Beedrill is lol.
There's actually evidence to back up the False-True Mega Evolution. In the anime, when Korrina first mega evolves her Lucario, it went rampant. It took a while for them to get used to it. That's where it became a True Mega Evolution.
I feel that’s more being unprepared and overwhelmed by the massive increase of power and the Lucario’s aura being pushed to its limits. Gotta get used to that.
Wouldn't even take the anime too much into consideration, it warps stuff too much compared to the games, creating it's own moves out of nowhere, having unevolved mons beat things that should take them out in one move, it's just that bad
I like the theory that the Rotom Dex is letting its ghost-type tendencies creep in for the Pokedex entries... Because Mega forms aren't the only ones with creepy dex entries. The whole regional dex is like that, and all the games following it are significantly _less_ dark. So yeah, I blame the Rotom (as in that _specific_ Rotom... The Rotom Phones are much more chill).
Alolas pokedex talks a lot about invasive species, pokemon suffering and negative impacts humans can have...It's like Rotom's entries care much more about the pokemon side of things, talking less about their science or behaviors, but more on their mortality, suffering and habitats
My personal headcanon is that the Pokemon only feel pain when _forced_ into Mega Evolving. That would explain how you're able to Mega Evolve Pokemon you just got from trading, who you have no bond with. It would also explain why Lysandre is able to Mega Evolve his Gyrados. This is also partially supported by the anime, where Korrina's Lucario goes out of control when it Mega Evolves, because Korrina didn't bond/train with Lucario properly. Another example, in the Volcanion movie the villains use a device to force multiple Pokemon into Mega Evolving, and that also depicts them feeling pain from it. The Mega Stone and Keystone are required to _use_ Mega Evolution, but the bond between trainer and Pokemon is required to _master_ it. EDIT: Okay so yeah, basically EXACTLY the "True Mega Evolution" theory.
Another thing worth considering is that the regional ability is Z-Moves, similar in concept but with a far greater kickback, it leaves you and your Pokemon out of energy, and Necrozma's seems to be on the verge of making the trainer keel over They probably tried to do it the way they were familiar, expecting a level of kickback in the form of "OH MY GOD MY ORGANS ARE MELTIIIIING"

Kind of, that it's willing to sacrifice itself in an act of friendship.
better than any excuse X/Y made tbh. We also could just say idk, maybe mega works differently between the two because of time travel theory and allat? idk. retcons be like that.
IMO, they don't just withstand the pain. In DBZ, Goku goes from being barely able to move after briefly using Kaioken x4 to spamming Kaioken x10 after a bit of training. Mega Evolution can work in a similar way, where the energy released by the Mega Stone can be distributed more evenly across the Pokemon's body if the trainer knows how to properly use their Key Stone and the damage caused by such a sudden burst of energy can be minimized through frequent training.
I hope Mega Evolution become a staple. It was the best added mechanic; new life to old pokémon was phenomenal. Wouldn't mind if the pokémon get different abilities based on which abilty the user had. Let's say for example, Charizard Y blaze becomes drought the hidden abilty turns into something else maybe Aerilate or a fire type version. More options would be great.
I saw a theory that megas are very painful and thats why they require a strong bond to be able to endure the pain like how your pokemon just refuses to die because of your friendship even though the move should have caused it to faint
I'll die on the hill that ORAS and XY don't conflict at all. XY requires you to have a strong bond and use keystones and the energy comes from the crystals in Annistar. That crystal most likely fell from space. The only thing ORAS has different is them specifying that mega stones are from space, but that can easily be handwaved as meteorites just having the energy required
The Ultimate Weapon did fire super high into space before arching back down to hit whatever AZ was aiming at, so the meteorites being bathed in the energy is entirely plausible. The crystals could even be from really big ones that landed first.
ngl i feel like the "pushing z crystal" theory is probably the most accurate. if we get more edgy dex entries in legends Z then id be convinced its gamefreak spiting us
Mega inheritly is about bond, mutual understanding and teamwork if we go by the anime. Using that logic, at least our starter or the pokemon you're most acquaint with should be able to use the gimmick... Its just GF being lazy in reality but I kinda like thinking that kalos SHOULD have been the reason its restrained. a great war causing suffering that may have divided pokemon and human suddenly repairing itself and out came mega within the deep roots of some pokemon, thus leading to a research mystery on what REALLY is mega? sounds interesting to me.
Theory two is actually canon in the anime. It takes a strong bond of friendship to properly mega evolve a Pokémon. A mega evolved lucario almost kills Pikachu.
I always liked the idea that Pokédex entries are what is believed by the people in the area, common legends, misconceptions, which makes it easier for people when their fav Mon has some messed up unbelievable stuff going on! It can also be used to explain away some of the inconsistencies in games, what with driftloon being around kids so much
Mega evolution is cool, but terra type added so much dynamics to the game that I wish it would become a permanent effect in Pokémon. Such a fun mechanic
as much as i hate mega's guts bc of how poorly it was handled on the game front as a whole, Z-A has *Every* thing to it to make up for the mistakes GF made what feels like a decade ago.

Imagine having a shadow slamance, purifying it, helping it over come its trama and making it so it can live a normal life. Then you mega evolve it and then youre basically back to square one
It’s unbalanced as hell and a way of making money giving it mostly to fan favorites like tyranitar, mewtwo and charizard, while leaving forgotten pokemon to be more forgotten. But man I love the designs of them I hope they come back
Remember in the anime when gym leader Korrina tried to mega evolve for the first time? The Lucario went rampage and thirsty over destruction. Until after some training with an old lady, they finally understand each other and can freely mega evolve without pain. This can become a proof to the theory of false and true mega evolution. Also, remember the Movie Volcanion? The bad guy there using something called dark mega evolution. He can just mega evolve many pokemon at will, without bond or consideration. The pokemon seems feeling much discomfort during the process, similar to the false mega evolution theory.
My head cannon: The weapon was fired and that made the energy surge that caused Mega Evolution, and since the weapon was fired up and thus to space, there were remnants/meteors that fell with that energy which is how megas got around the world, and why they think in Hoenn that it happened because of the astrological phenomenon… Each region has different dex entries so each region may have different interpretations or understandings to Mega Evolution which is why I believe that it is the island’s mysticism and culture that has them think megas are horrible for the Pokemon, while they prefer to use their more “holy” z-moves
Mega Evolution was alluded to in Scarlet and Violet with Roaring Moon's dex entry. My personal theory is similar to the false Mega Evo one. Pokemon can mega evolve in the wild, and those are the ones that exhibit violent tendencies. A M-Glalie in the wild will starve because it can't eat. It might not even be able to de-evolve back without having a trainer. M-Salamence could be something similar to what you brought up, where if you don't have a strong enough bond with it and then try to Mega Evolve it, it simply won't be able to tell you apart from its enemies.
It's funny to think Gamefreak went with a dark lore in Sun/Moon, took a huge step back in Sword/Shield and them went straight back with their next two games having the most mature content ever in their games explicity told over the main storyline
You sir, have earned my subscription! I genuinely felt enthralled by your description skills, editing skills, and theorising. You deserve to be seen one day, and I’ll be rooting for you! Remember me when you’re famous my guy!
you forgot about the Let's Go games, as they have the gen 1 mega evolutions (although they play a minor role) so the switch has already had mega evolutions for years
I think you could say that the people of Kalos weren't aware that other regions had access to Mega Evolution simply by the fact that they're going off of history, and not actually visiting other regions in the modern era. But tbh I don't consider remakes to be canon anyway so 🤷♂️
I personally feel like they always kind of wanted Mega Evolution to be this dark thing given the story of X and Y but quickly realized how much it clashed with the mechanic itself and so the story writers held it out until Megas were out of the spotlight to reveal their original intentions.
I like the weird ones like glailie and scizor because it shows the bond between the trainer and the pokemon to the point that they're both willing to put themselves in danger because they trust each other and know things will be alright
I'm sure the comment section has mentioned this 20 million times by now but the last appearance of Mega in a pokemon game was Let's Go Pikachu, which had pokedex entries that were much less demented and more positive. There was another theory, one I really loved: the idea that since Sun/Moon's entries are written by your Rotom, it's just a prankster who likes freaking you out...or, being a Pokemon itself, it knows some dark secrets...?
To me the reason why having such a ridiculously stong bond is required is because of those side effects. Without that bond there is nothing counteracting those.
The edgy writers sure have gone downhill since and after megas were intoduced. Its kinda sad we coulda had cool fun stories but esgy depresso intern thinks hurting your partner would be a good idea for an all in all friendship based game
I like to believe Mega evolution *does* cause such pain/distress (even when bonded) and would normally indeed cause rampages and brutality. And it is only through both: the bond between trainer and pokemon that the pokemon can endure the change, AND the support of the trainer helping keep their pokemon calm throughout the process until through enough training, both parties can fully adjust and activate without issue. But if that trust is broken, the pokemon could turn violent.
Theres another vid that does a really good explanation about mega evolutions and that is from the analysis vid of the mega pokemon battle royale from terminal montage. The initial scene of the mega evolution of pokemon going through various torture is literally just what happens to them boiled down. For instance, mega glalie literally had its jaw broke down, sharpedo will continuously lose and grow more teeth all the while suffering the intense pain, scizor like whats mentioned in the thumbnail of this vid will literally melt like no joke. Shits dark af
Probs gonna make it more brutal with legends ZA. In horizons they’re going after these rocks called the eternal blessing. The bad guys used one to create some mist that filled their Pokémon with power and sent them into a rage. Their boss also has a shiny zygarde dog form
The last instance of mega evolution in the games is the let's go games on the switch, where they retconned it back to or simalar to the original friendship based lore.
Something I should note, that was entirely forgotten: Sun and Moon is NOT the last games that enables Mega Evolution. It's rarely known, but the RE-REMAKES of Gen 1, Let's Go Eevee and Pikachu, which mind you don't even allow your Pokemon to hold items or utilize their abilities, has the ENTIRE repritore of Gen 1 Mega Evolutions, and even has Alolan forms of some Pokemon available. It's actually quite confusing the directions Gamefreak takes for some reason, especially since a big draw of Megas was not only the stat boost, but the change in ability as well. IE, Mega Charizard Y just kind of being a slightly stronger Charizard without Drought.
It more crazy if you question if the only reason they experience pain is that it's not the place of origin of mega evolution so the crystals are crazy unstable
I figure the whole story from ORAS could just be mythology, the draconids just made their own explanation for the phenomenon like many cultures do in real life
I forget where i heard it, but there was a theory that the way trainers in Alola treat Z-moves is also reflected in how they use Mega Stones. The overuse of Z-moves led to the overuse of Mega evolution, causing the pain and misery from the improper bonds from the abuse of the power.
Mega Evo intended to be a last resort. Only to be done when there are high stakes. The only "gimmick" that I've ever actually enjoyed. There is definitely more potential with mega evo still. And some Mons still need there overdue evolution. Mega Beedrill will always bee my favorite. I wish it was permanent.
I have the head cannon there's some really deranged dev at HQ who's cracked at his job and is the 911 of Nintendo for issues and glitches. He goes and fixes all the games, but occasionally just alters the entries or some other way of getting ahold of them. Like the games aren't actually meant to be dark at all but he occasionally just gets to say otherwise.
I mean to be fair I don't think the people of Hoenn would have heard about a random person half a world away mega evolving their Lucario. Vice versa too. Any of them could be right, can't know unless they show dates.
To be fair OR/AS takes place in a whole separate universe, it wouldn't make sense for their mega evolutions to have happened the exact same way as in X/Y.
a possibility could be a difference in culture between places like kalos and hoenn that may look upon mega evolution for favourably and reflect that in their pokedexes, and places like alola that may culturally view mega evolution as more unethical which would also be reflected in their pokedexes
Mega evos and Gigantamax forms were the best becasue its like your pokemon were going super saiyan to turn the tide of a battle. The stadium music for Sword & Shield made the whole thing seem so dramatic and epic. Ive been a player since blue and red, completed almost every main title game and enjoyed all to some extent but Scarlet and violet just didnt tick the box for me, the ring pop hats were just daft and having the legendary pokemon like a cereal box prize took away any cool factor to catching it after/along the journey. I did really enjoy legends arceus and will keep an open mind for AZ

It’s unbalanced as hell and a way of making money giving it mostly to fan favorites like tyranitar, mewtwo and charizard, while leaving forgotten pokemon to be more forgotten. But man I love the designs of them I hope they come back
@@KeithKemp_I hate some of their designs but I agree that it sucks for forgotten Pokémon to not get the same love as the popular ones.
tyranitar's back literally rips. how did you not mention it
Looking at the 3D model, that dex entry is a complete lie.
Its back is fine but the spikes got longer.
I have the right to keep and bear mega evolution stones. NO STEP ON SALAMENCE!
Mega was in let’s go
Most mega's: pain &' suffering
Mega pinsir: WHEEEEEEEE I CAN FLY NOW
Omega and alpha were still gen 6...
Awesome video man, commenting for algorithm. Keep it up!
I think you gotta look at it this way, the lore of how mega-evo came about is all second hand accounts passed through time, like old stories
drifloon doesnt steal children, this was mere pokemon folklore
7:24 A train is that you????
Seems like it
It's funny to think Gamefreak went with a dark lore in Sun/Moon, took a huge step back in Sword/Shield and them went straight back with their next two games having the most mature content ever in their games explicity told over the main storyline
The dark entries that conflict with prior regions is just rotom being rotom
My theory is that Rotom lead into it's ghost typing and made everything deadly.
I think there should be more Pokémon horror stuff based on THIS
You sir, have earned my subscription! I genuinely felt enthralled by your description skills, editing skills, and theorising. You deserve to be seen one day, and I’ll be rooting for you! Remember me when you’re famous my guy!
I agree.
you forgot about the Let's Go games, as they have the gen 1 mega evolutions (although they play a minor role)
so the switch has already had mega evolutions for years
Not to mention Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX even though it’s a side game.
You earned a sub❤ nice in-depth video
9:52 Funny to think they doubled down on this dex entry with Annihilape
I mean, we can take that Kalos had the stones appearing because the artifact made the same energy of the artifacts
Fun fact: In german salamace is called Brutalanda what means brutal and blood lust
I like the weird ones like glailie and scizor because it shows the bond between the trainer and the pokemon to the point that they're both willing to put themselves in danger because they trust each other and know things will be alright
Bro really said “Ray-QWAZA” and “Ray-KWAYZA” twice in the first five minutes to beat the mispronunciation allegations
I’m surprised people hate mega evolutions when it’s so dope, the fact a pokemon can go beyond its beyond is beyond amazing
Roaring Moon’s dex entry mentions Mega Evolution surprisingly.
It is the peak of Pokémon
No one can say otherwise
The edgy writers sure have gone downhill since and after megas were intoduced. Its kinda sad we coulda had cool fun stories but esgy depresso intern thinks hurting your partner would be a good idea for an all in all friendship based game
Mega evolution is making a comeback in Pokémon Legends Z-A on switch
I'm gonna replay gen 6 soon, it's so cool!
beedrill no longer gets legs. The most terrible fate.
Mega evolutions was brought back in Pokémon let’s go
It more crazy if you question if the only reason they experience pain is that it's not the place of origin of mega evolution so the crystals are crazy unstable
I figure the whole story from ORAS could just be mythology, the draconids just made their own explanation for the phenomenon like many cultures do in real life
Under rates UA-camr keep up the grind and keep going you’ll make it big
0:00 TEH let’s go games had it actually
Yeah I wouldn’t want my Pokémon to experience pain while I make it fight to near death
Why is every Mega dying on the inside and outside, but Mega Gengar is a just a psycho?
I guess gengar’s ghostly body allows it to take the change easily, but it escalates the worse aspects of a gengars instincts
I wish it was permanent.
keep up the great work! i love your videos!
Analog horror:mega mayhem
I have the head cannon there's some really deranged dev at HQ who's cracked at his job and is the 911 of Nintendo for issues and glitches. He goes and fixes all the games, but occasionally just alters the entries or some other way of getting ahold of them. Like the games aren't actually meant to be dark at all but he occasionally just gets to say otherwise.
1:54 quick correction, it’s the same gen, it’s a remake of gen 3 but with the XY engine.
2:12 They have the BELIEF. They very well could be wrong.
They took the darkness out of the evil teams and put them in the pokedex entries
Mega Beedrill will always be my favorite glass cannon. But poor Butterfree didn’t get shit.
mega salamence dex has elden ring item descriptions for dex entries 😂
I mean to be fair I don't think the people of Hoenn would have heard about a random person half a world away mega evolving their Lucario. Vice versa too. Any of them could be right, can't know unless they show dates.
Always enjoyed sun/mon and usum but never knew the lore was dark looking forward to a vid about that
Honestly about the “metor” showers, maybe the hit from the ultimate weapon sent pieces up into space, and they rained down on Hoenn?
Mega Audino should have been a regular evolution, it was so beautiful.
i always just thought of them as Super Saiyans for Pokemon
To be fair OR/AS takes place in a whole separate universe, it wouldn't make sense for their mega evolutions to have happened the exact same way as in X/Y.
a possibility could be a difference in culture between places like kalos and hoenn that may look upon mega evolution for favourably and reflect that in their pokedexes, and places like alola that may culturally view mega evolution as more unethical which would also be reflected in their pokedexes
you forgot that in the let’s go games you can mega evolve
7:58 ring the bells! surrender the city!
your city is now blood soaked, simply because imma maintain mah flight path
Mega evos and Gigantamax forms were the best becasue its like your pokemon were going super saiyan to turn the tide of a battle. The stadium music for Sword & Shield made the whole thing seem so dramatic and epic. Ive been a player since blue and red, completed almost every main title game and enjoyed all to some extent but Scarlet and violet just didnt tick the box for me, the ring pop hats were just daft and having the legendary pokemon like a cereal box prize took away any cool factor to catching it after/along the journey. I did really enjoy legends arceus and will keep an open mind for AZ
