How is it a good typing? It barely resists anything noteworthy and offensively the types don't help each other's nemeses as well (flying, grass, bug mostly)
Can you imagine this thing with Sand Force? A Torterra with a maxed out Attack stat making an earthquake boosted by STAB, Sand Force, and Choice Band. Torterra would be a nightmare to face without an ice-type on your team
Torterra is one of the best Gen 7 PU Pokemon, being S tier in the viability rankings, but the icing on the cake is its untiered status, allowing it to compete in Gen 7 ZU and become one of the best untiered Pokemon despite being perfectly viable in PU.
@@RedMagicA52 ZU is not an official metagame yet, so the playerbase is smaller and makes it more difficult for a pokémon to simply move up a tier like that
3:49 "With the dearth of excellent poison types like Nidoking, Toxicroak, and Drapion, this wasn't an issue." But dearth means the exact opposite of what you mean! lol
I think part of it has to do that people prefer the simpler aspects of battles regarding types, such as power and speed. Water and fire types happen to align very well with this in their strengths and resistances, however grass is less straightforward and more interesting as in comparison they get the interesting, and strategic moves as they deal with the more complex sides of battling. It doesn't help however that almost all water types can learn ice type moves so they should collectively create some defenses and counters to that problem.
People obsessed with Speed will find Trick Room their weakness, Torterra being slow makes it great under Trick Room's effects. Yeah it's unfortunate Grass Type Starters often get the short end of the stick when it comes to competitive viability.
@@WaterKirby1994 The grasses have traditionally been the best starters in their gen, actually. They started slipping as time went on, though. Gen 1: Venusaur far outstripped Blastoise and Charizard, neither of whom were even usable (and still outshines Blastoise) Gen 2: Meganium was solid BL (mostly because Eggs was better) while Fera and Ty were (usually) uu (but yeah, Fera was better in later gens) Gen 3: Sceptile was king of the jungle in the 200 meta but saw himself outpaced by Swampert (and even Blaziken) as the gen progressed Gen 4: Torterra…okay, he was the worst starter this gen Gen 5: Serperior became terrifying after his DW ability and far outstripped his companions. Sadly that happened way too late…but he was still better than the other two travesties that passed themselves off as starters this gen. And he's the only one people use today (in OU, no less). Gen 6: Chestnaut is as good as Delphox. But Greninja…I mean, come on. You're not going to compete with that gecko. Gen 7: Decidueye is okay, but…sadly, he got the short end of the stick again. Looking at the latest two gens, it's clear grass is as inferior as it was superior in the first two gens. That's a shame, since grass's position in the meta is as strong as ever. Here's hoping Nintendo makes better grass starters. We want a return to glory. Current viable starters in OU: Grass: Venusaur, occasionally Sceptile, definitely Serperior Fire: Charizard, Blaziken (banned), and I really want to say Infernape but yeah…it's really just Charizard you'll see. Water: Swampert (what is it with gen 3 starters?), maybe empoleon (but not really), mostly Greninja So yeah, 3 grasses (but the only real OU grass right now isn't even a mega, ironically), compared to one real fire and two very real waters. In usage though, water starters probably win right now, since all the grass starters are niche compared to Kart, Ferro, Tang, Bulu, and even Amoongus or Breloom. Lots of good grasses to choose from, honestly. No real reason to pick a starter. Meanwhile, Char and Gren are irreplaceable.
@@crazycoolkids00 Thankyou for telling me Meganium was once good competitively. People usually hate on it & praise the overrated firerat. I was aware that Venusaur & Serperior were good although thought of them as exceptions. Sceptile can hold its own with the other great Gen3 starters. Grass as a type suffers from a few serious flaws. It's main support comes from the sun that primarily powers its greatest weakness fire. On top of that there are weaknesses to ice, flying, bug, & poison. Still Grass has some great set up moves like leechseed, synthesis, powder moves, spore, stunspore & draining moves. Venusaur's great because it replaces the poison weakness with immunity.
@person person Agreed it's dumb looking & doesn't seem all that competitively viable except for SunTeams where it could be replaced by any other Fire Type & the Eruption niche you mentioned. Yet for some reason half the Johto fanbase worships it. Competitively Gen 2 Starters really deserve Mega Evos.
Maybe if literally every water type wasn't able to learn strong ice moves then grass types would be able to get at least some kind of foot hold in the meta
In answer for grass types We need a typing buff. Defensively or offensively. I mean, 5 weaknesses and 7 non-effective attacks. Imo, i think grass shouldve immunitu to fairy cuz...well fairies doesnt hurt plants right? I wouldnt recommend new characteristic for grass type because as far in 7 gens, all grass types were hindered by its own typing
Grass types are extremely bad in the type match up but they end up getting the most absurd and game breaking tools to balance that out. Think Grassy Terrain with Grassy Glide, Strength Sap, Spore, Leech Seed, Sleep Power, Stun Spore etc. Those are just the most broken ones grass types have the best damaging move pool selection out of all the types, think Leaf Storm, Solar Beam, Energy ball, Giga Drain, Solar Blade, Wood Hammer, Power Whip, Leaf Blade, Horn Leech etc. All of these are Competitively viable moves. They also have the their very own healing move, synthesis. This huge selection of moves to choose from gives decent depth to the grasses game. Both offensive or defensive grass types can pick from this huge selection and mix and match their sets. Obviously not all grass types get all those moves but most learn a decent no. Of mentioned moves. This one of the reasons why grass is considered good defensively, those defensive allow tools make meaningful progress in every game. Finally because grass is so bad that we end up getting the most absurdly broken mechanics on some grass types that probably would have landed them in anything goes if they had a half decent typing. Think contrary serperior, grassy glide rillaboom, Kartana, Tapu Bulu, Regenerator Tangrowth, Shyamin Sky, etc., Keeping the said broken mechanic and stats as before, for example dragon fire Serperior with overheat/ draco meteor etc. Obviously this is the most ideal scenario that I present but then again we are talking about anything goes here so we have to give them the perfect characteristics. Another one is if Rillaboom was Ghost/Fairy type and it got the ghost type version of terrain, Glide, Hammer + Play Rough then it could maybe have been in AG but it would have been an Uber for sure.
@@gengarzilla1685 Hopefully the next protagonist (if Ash's journey ever ends) is more strategic and defensive oriented. Having the person being the exact opposite of Ash in battling style would make for a great change of pace. Heck have the person be a girl just to highlight that. Not like fans would mind anyway.
Best starter. One of my first ever Pokemon. I hope the Sinnoh starters get Megas. Give me a Rock/Grass Mega Torterra with Solid Rock or Rock Head or a Grass/Steel with Sturdy or maybe even Heatproof
I feel like if they do make Torterra into a mega it'll be rock grass, but it'll probably end up being even better at being a physical wall but with a huge boost to its special defense and less speed
This video hurts me on a personal level, since Torterra is by far my absolute fav PKMN, and he comes from my very own fav Gen. I refuse not to use him any time I can, but far some surprise picks, I never get to make him shine. Given that he can use Rock Polish and plenty of Ground and Rock moves, I was expecting him to get Solid Rock instead Shell Armor, but my wish got eviserated.
I don’t understand why people ask for megas lmao If they didn’t add new megas in USUM, a gen that had megas Why tf would they add megas in gen 8…lmfao It’d more likely get a g max
I think with a mega it could really help this Pokemon out. It's biggest issues are it's defensive typing, low speed, and low power output. However, with rock polish and stone edge he has the possibility to be a strong sweeper. Assuming they increase it's physical attack to 145+ hopefully 150+, increase in it's defenses (which is a given), and Increase the speed by 10 points (if they lower the speed to give it more attack and defense it probably ruins him) With Rock polish (and possibly hazard support) he could take it's better and take out most pokemon much easier. This would be even better if he had solid rock (any good defensive ability really) or an ability that increases his damage. He still gets walled by some mons like FERRO (what doesn't half the time) but very few mons get walled, and don't get forced out.
I think the big source of Torterras downfall came from it's low speed. I guess you can also use trick room, but getting a decent switch in for something that can make it work might be a challenge

Change it's typing to grass/steel when it mega evolves to show that it's ecosystem has been destroyed and replaced by civilisation because of the artificially created mega stone. That would be way too deep for a children's game though.

I don't think any 3D sprite has ever been able to get Torterra right. The gen 4/5 sprites look fantastic but the console games and gen 6 onwards sprites make it look fat and boring.
Honestly it was boring always for me
I know, right? The 3D sprites just lack so much of the charm that the 2D sprites had. They can no longer have cool poses of any kind and the designers just give up on adding in the extra details because it'd be too much work.

Uhh.... Phrasing?
You ever thought of a Pokémon that should have been good but it isn't?
Yeah, that's how I define Torterra. That typing is just godlike in paper, but the stats held it back I guess (Even though a non-STAB Ice Beam destroys it)
Spiritomb. Upsets me that it isn't good.
@@s1lm4r1l6 Wasn't it good in Gen 4 and only in Gen 4? I know it wasn't a staple, but wasn't it a niche pick?
And if it isn't... I can see why it would be upsetting. I mean, after all the trouble you go through to get one, it should at the very least be decent.
The stats overall are decent but speed sucks
@@s1lm4r1l6 example of pokemon that shows HP stats really matters
How is it a good typing? It barely resists anything noteworthy and offensively the types don't help each other's nemeses as well (flying, grass, bug mostly)
Gen 9 : Torterra got shell smash and started to literally SMASH everything in OU, but still falled on UU/RU
Can you imagine this thing with Sand Force?
A Torterra with a maxed out Attack stat making an earthquake boosted by STAB, Sand Force, and Choice Band. Torterra would be a nightmare to face without an ice-type on your team
Throw your idea into the garbage it's getting shellsmash loaded dice
Like said Johto & Sinnoh Starters need a mega evolution to really boost there capabilities to be more reliable
Sucks that johto starters are considered the worst starters competively.
Yea that sucks
Johto gets no love at all ): everytime I love a generation it gets nothing at all
Torterra is one of the best Gen 7 PU Pokemon, being S tier in the viability rankings, but the icing on the cake is its untiered status, allowing it to compete in Gen 7 ZU and become one of the best untiered Pokemon despite being perfectly viable in PU.
how? if it's S tier, wouldn't it get used enough to not be ZU?
@@RedMagicA52 ZU is not an official metagame yet, so the playerbase is smaller and makes it more difficult for a pokémon to simply move up a tier like that
Torterra should have got solid rock for it's hidden ability, it makes sense!
or Thick Fat
Someday 😔
3:49 "With the dearth of excellent poison types like Nidoking, Toxicroak, and Drapion, this wasn't an issue."
But dearth means the exact opposite of what you mean!
Gen 1: Venusaur far outstripped Blastoise and Charizard, neither of whom were even usable (and still outshines Blastoise)
Gen 2: Meganium was solid BL (mostly because Eggs was better) while Fera and Ty were (usually) uu (but yeah, Fera was better in later gens)
Gen 3: Sceptile was king of the jungle in the 200 meta but saw himself outpaced by Swampert (and even Blaziken) as the gen progressed
Gen 4: Torterra…okay, he was the worst starter this gen
Gen 5: Serperior became terrifying after his DW ability and far outstripped his companions.
Current viable starters in OU:
Grass: Venusaur, occasionally Sceptile, definitely Serperior
Fire: Charizard, Blaziken (banned), and I really want to say Infernape but yeah…it's really just Charizard you'll see.
Water: Swampert (what is it with gen 3 starters?), maybe empoleon (but not really), mostly Greninja
So yeah, 3 grasses (but the only real OU grass right now isn't even a mega, ironically), compared to one real fire and two very real waters.
3:12 we heard it, venusaur isnt packing the bulk to tank shadow balls

Maybe if literally every water type wasn't able to learn strong ice moves then grass types would be able to get at least some kind of foot hold in the meta
In answer for grass types
We need a typing buff.
I like a fairy resist, but grasses are already pretty common, and this would shut down fairies and bring back dragons. No me lika.
@@crazycoolkids00 The only viable grass types in OU are Kartana, Serperior, and Ferrathorn
@@jonathano503 Venusaur, Amoonguss, Rillaboom and Tangrowth

No wonder Ash's Torterra stopped winning upon evolving.

Torterra was awesome best gen 4 starter in my opinion. He was my first starter
Torterra is easily my favourite starter-evolution of all time
Woo. My favorite of the 3 starters
This needs to be updated rn
