It's surprising to see that a gen 2 pokemon, a generation filled with mediocre pokemon, stay relevant in higher teirs Edit: okay I did not mean that Skarmory was the only good gen 2 pokemon. I know there are T-tars and what not, I mean there are pokemon that have never found a niche in any format like damn Sunflora or Ledian
Also something of note is that Skarmory did just get access to Drill Run which can actually hit Gholdengo and Heatran for super effective damage assuming no Air Balloon. I'm not sure how useful it will be but that is something to consider.

Gliscor doesn’t have real recovery besides poison heal and protect and gliscor can’t really shut down sweeps automatically. It has to rely on toxic to shut down sweeps but what would happen is either gliscor will get killed or a teammate will get killed in the process of stopping a Pokémon thats plus 2 attack with toxic. Gliscor is better overall but Skarm is way better than gliscor when it comes to setting up hazards and walling physical attackers at the same time.
Shit like this always reminds of how much I love competitive pokemon... The new guy comes in, overtaking the veteran, and then the veteran reveals he still has one more trick up his sleeve... Competitive Pokemon Kayfabe is always such a blast after the generations have time to develop and you have distance to look back on...
Simple, Tinkatons simply hunted Covirknights almost to extinction, making the last surviving indivudual hiding in the shady of Skarmory to avoid being found
@globalistgamer6418 Corv still can't learn Toxic. And most pokemon lost the ability to learn Toxic because Gamefreak wants battles to be faster and it heavily nerfing stall strategies. So far Milotic (who still learns Toxic)and Suicune are the only stall mons virtually unfazed by these nerfs

Toxic doesn’t detriment stall as much because most stall teams are built around stalling and will bring ways to alleviate poison damage (natural cure, poison / steel types, regenerator, recovery moves). Toxic is worse for balance and offense teams since they have less longevity and will rack up chip damage, whereas stall teams don’t need to maintain momentum often, so they can freely switch around to reset toxic’s damage ramp up.
If they wanted to remove defog so it can feel different from corv I wish they gave it uturn so apart from from blulky hazard setters/removers they can both serve as pivots
From the arrive of corvyknight in gen 8 skarmory was outclassed as a defensive steel flying mon, skarmory is more of a setter, with a lacking of sp def, corvy is bulky on both sides thanks to more hp and decent defenses, iron defense skarmory looks cool but there are so many ghost and special attackers that force to switch skarm, corvy even can use a slow u turn for take momentum wich is necessary

I don't think Skarmory will be able to carve enough of a proper niche over Corviknight. In the end of the day Skarmory due to this play will face magic bouncers to reverse engineer the role against it like it was in gen 8. Making pivot the better choice in U-turn again. That said. If the meta isn't counter playing Skarmory. Then I can see it's succes being around for awhile:)
the fact it forces in magic bounce users means it's also limiting play on the opponents side. magic bounce itself is high skill high reward. forcing 50/50s means a pokemon is more likely to stay then to leave. its like the situation between great tusk and gholdengo where alot of your decisions are 50/50s in either your favor or the opponents. you can rapid spin hoping for the 50/50 that gholdengo doesnt switch in and threaten tusk or you can knock off and threaten gholdengo.
@@hugomventura i agree. Only reason to run it would be if Skarmory become fixed with staking playstyle. So unless that happens it would be no reason thinking Skarmory would replace Corviknight in current meta :)
Nice Video, but you forgot one important factor over why Corviknight is better than Skarmory in Generation 8. Pressure. Pressure allows it to have more Defog PP than Opposing Stealth Rock PP, allowing it to keep Hazards off the field permanently.
multiple reason, but generally people value corvs mixed bulk and ability to pivot (skarm doesnt get u turn like corv). spikes also likely less valuable due to prominence of boots spam. iron boulder isnt even used anymore, so skarms ability to deal with it is less important. more answers to kingambit are high in ou usage other than skarm. corv gets defog, skarm doesnt. that said it doesnt make skarm bad but this is just likely what people have started to value

Same reason why Spiritomb was kinda garbage even before fairies were introduced, having no weaknesses does not inherently make for a good pokemon. 98 speed is bad even with dragon dance because a lot of people are running scarf users that have base 100 or higher speed, plus Hydreigon hasn’t got enough attack. If you want a mid speed dragon dancer that can live a hit pretty much guaranteed just run Dragonite, multiscale is far better than levitate

Yeah. People who say that Corviknight was Skarmory but better in Gen 8 didn’t look past the fact that they’re two defensive Pokémon with the same typing. Skarmory has always been a hazard stacking physical wall while Corv has been used as a defensive pivot and defogger.

Sometimes you just need an extreme way of walling physical attacks. Skarm takes care of that with the occasional hazard stacking potential it brings.
Why not just use gliscor?

It sucks that Skarmory lost Toxic and Defog. Toxic and Spikes is what gave Skarmory an edge over Corviknight.
Toxic had extremely broad distribution prior to Gen 8. If Skarmory was given Toxic back, most likely Corviknight would gain it as well.
