One of my brothers gifted me this album for Christmas when I was 8. I was the only child in the neighborhood building that kind of music collection. 🤘👶🤘
I was even younger when I started listening to this album, because I had three older sisters who were into some serious rock.
You managed to do the "when I was 8" meme even for this, congratulations
@@gerstelb I heard this album when I was a foetus.
@@papalaz4444244 Never heard of or seen any memes for that. Thank you for the accolades.
By early 1974 the Alice Cooper band were tired of touring, sick of each other, and wanted a break. Two of them decided to do solo albums, so Alice decided to also do one. His album was designed as a soundtrack to an accompanying TV special:The Nightmare. A big chart success, on the back of a hugely successful tour, resulted in Alice not returning to the band; whilst keeping the all-important name. The rest of the original band were thus left stranded on the sidelines.
This WTMN title track sees producer Bob Ezrin flesh out the Cooper musical palette even further. The funky feel being largely down to Josef Chirowski's clavinet. Guitarists Dick Wagner (who co-wrote this with Alice) & Steve Hunter had already played on previous AC band albums. It's a great opener, and scene-setter.
This LP had high production value, for its time - this album was Bob Ezrin’s warm-up for Pink Floyd The Wall. Every tune on this LP leads into the next - solid concept album, executed very well. A lot of Toronto influence - this is the era that Alice lived here and was Keanu Reeves’ babysitter etc - Prakash John is a killer bassist…used to lead a great party band called The Lincolns.
Possibly Tony Levin playing bass on this track? That man is everywhere.
A hell of a lot of horns on this album. Great stuff.
Like everyone is saying, "Devil's Food" and "The Black Widow" need to be listened to back to back. But so do "Years Ago" and "Steven". Same reason. You could even put "The Awakening" right after "Steven", since they kind of segue into one another, also. Plus, it's a very short song.
Ever since you finished 'Killer', I've been anxiously awaiting your next Alice album reaction. I was really hoping to wake up this morning, come on your channel and see you doing the first song from 'Billion Dollar Babies', like I've been doing almost every morning. This is just as good.
So, are you beginning to see why Alice has been my favorite for fifty years? LOL!
I'm really excited for you to hear more, more, more Alice. Enjoy.
I said much the same back when Justin was listening to Killer. Years Ago / Steven / The Awakening *HAVE* to be listened to in one sitting. They just have to.
Saw this concert in 1975 (the Alice Cooper Show), my all time favorite! It was a theatrical production- fantastic, from start to finish. I would recommend following up this LP with Alice Cooper Goes To Hell. It was a sequel to WtMN.
Gotta respect Alice Cooper. We are not worthy. 👐
Tony Levin and Steve Hunter played in Peter Gabriel’s band on his first solo tour.
Levin also plays on Joan Armitrading’s album Walk Under Ladders. He’s just good on anything.
Levin still plays with gabriel (not to mention King Crimson too)
Big thumbs up here, a fine Alice Cooper album. You'll likely want to listen to Devil's Food & The Black Widow together. It's kind of a two part work. Enjoy!
Yeah...Devil's Food is so short, and then it bleeds so beautifully into Vincent Price's soliloquy and then into The Black Widow. A simply gorgeous piece of music!!!
I am thrilled to bits you're reacting AND enjoying [thus far] this album. It is an appropriate choice for Halloween too. This album means a lot to me, not just out of nostalgia for the time, but for it being an awesome production all round. It was a surprise for most fans, but as you can see, it was well received. No surprise though, that it has that Jim Morrison swagger, since Alice was both fan and friend of the man. The original band split amicably and have reunited -save for Glen Buxton, RIP -on several occasions over the past decade, but they didn't want to continue with the theatrical element. Alice did!. Can't wait for the next reaction and I hope you follow "Devil's Food" with "The Black Widow" immediately after, as it should be heard that way. Cheers.🎃😺
I really like what you wrote. I also wrote a comment but I somehow forgot to mention the continuation aspect of Devil's Food & The Black Widow. Thanks for that, Cosmic Cat. This is one of my all time favorite albums.
Edit: It seems there are quite a few who have also mentioned it. Thanks everyone. Take care and enjoy the music.
@@Vimana Thankyou Vimana. It's certainly one of mine too.😊
You really should listen to “Steven” and “The Awakening” together - they flow together really well. Top notch production as well - look forward to the rest of your reaction for this album!
Soooo excited for this, Justin! In terms of theatricality and shock value, this album is probably Alice's magnum opus, to this day even. Oh, and as people have said on other comments, Devil's Food and The Black Widow, and then Years Ago, Steven and The Awakening HAVE to be listened to together, because the not only segue into each other, but they're all parts of the same story. The latter 3 in particular have one of the most haunting, eerie and disturbing stories ever put to music.
Bunch if us in like 6th grade had this. Played it to death.
Wow, what a lovely surprise! Was watching yt on my big screen and this popped up.I'm no Alice uber-fan by any means but this is def my fav AC album so I had to come on my laptop and leave a comment.Great musicianship on here, so chuffed you're gonna do the whole album. As others have said above/below, a couple of songs need to be played together..so many highlights for me on this album, not gonna spoil anything as you're gonna do the whole album...nice one JP 👍 :)
Far far more to Alice's music than most people realise.
Amen brother!
I'm slowly learning that :D
The album that turned me on to Alice Cooper!! I had previously watched his TV special The Nightmare and immediately had to have the album. I then proceeded to buy all of the previous albums, my favorite being Killer.
Tony Levin is definitely one of the greats. Him and a few other players inspired me the to try to think outside the box but do it in support of the song
I see "The Wall" on your chalkboard behind you. Bob Ezrin produced both both "Welcome" & "The Wall." He has certain trademark techniques such as his use of children's choruses. i mention this because it might enrichen your "The Wall" listen to have albums like this in your encyclopedic mind. There is a sonic and thematic connection. Great reaction BTW.
Really looking forward to hearing more reactions to this. It's an amazing album.
AT LAST! Someone has listened to this epic :) Producer Bob "Pink Floyd The Wall" Ezrin.
You may remember that Ezrin and Levin worked with Hunter and Wagner on Gabriel's first album.
Also on Lou Reed's 'Berlin', albeit in a limited capacity.
It's a solid album with some real classics on it. The next one "Alice Cooper Goes to Hell" I like more, it has a bit of humor in it and the 1978 "From the Inside" is my personal favorite. That one has Bernie Taupin as a co-writer and it's based on Alice's stint in re-hab and the people he met there.
I've gotta mention 'Lace and Whiskey' also. I know it's not as well regarded but I dig it just as much as the other 3 of his 1st 4 solo albums
"Goes to Hell" and "From the Inside" are two of my favorites. It's a shame his illness prevented him from touring the former because I find it to be excellent. A very entertaining conceptual journey. The latter album is a fascinating concept further revealing the man behind the mask and could've been released under Vincent Furnier.
@@Another_Broke_Musician lace and whiskey is such a brilliant album. Definitely one of my all time Alice cooper favourites
Years Ago / Steven / The Awakening is by far the highlight of this album. And very much appropriate for Halloween.
Agreed 100%.
I have been ignoring this since it was released for reasons. Hearing it again and I enjoyed it. This might be a far better week than I had anticipated.
Tony Levin played also on Jean-Pierre Ferland's Jaune recorded at André Perry's studio in Montréal Québec. He played on Catherine Lara's albums too.
If you are looking for Halloween songs to react to, try DOA from band Bloodrock in 1971. One of the most morbid and creepy songs ever to chart. Banned by many radio stations and high schools. The song portrays the thoughts of an individual who has just experienced a plane crash. Do the longer album version if you can.
I also had no idea Tony Levin was on this track. Props to all your listeners who knew this already. Wow.
Perfect, Justin! Just perfect in every way. This reaction really cheered me up and you couldn't have made a better choice. I'm also very glad that you decided to listen to the whole album in one session, perhaps. Maybe you didn't already go to the b-side of the album? If you didn't, I recommend having no pauses between "Years Ago", "Steven" and "The Awakening". You will know why. Yeah, there's quite a lot of variation and it's very strange and bizarre at times.
I think you're gonna like it.
Hope you're planning on doing the whole album - it's one of his best...
Tony Levin is to 70's rock bass what Carmine Appice was to 60's and 70's drumming.
As a fAC an ; this is the coronation of underestimated albums . It is carefully power played universal sound of music .
Happy to hear you're listening to this in one sitting. It's a complete piece. Any other way just wouldn't be right for your experience. Looking forward to it.
What a show that was…one of the ballerina in the show became his wife. They’re still together to this day.
Definitely my favorite Alice Cooper album.
Good call on The Doors comparison. Alice said that "Desperadc" from 'Killer' was his Jim Morrison impersonation. He was a fan
First album (cassette) I ever bought as a kid. Bought it based on the cover, I think. You can really hear Bob Ezrin's influence all over the album (think The Wall!)
I only really knew his **big 4** albums, thru BBB. I never bought his records, but the people I was hanging out with all had them.
I would not seek him out to listen to, but I wouldn't turn him off if he came on the radio, and enjoy him for what he is! It will be fun hearing more of this album along with you, Justin!
Never spent a dime on him, except for the price of a concert ticket in 1972......and it ended up being in at least the top 10, if not top 5, best concerts I ever saw. However, at least half of the greatness of that concert was the two opening acts - Jo Jo Gunne and Captain Beyond!! Now, I most definitely DID buy albums by both of those 2 bands!!🙃
🎶
Been awhile, so I’m hearing a Pinky Floydy, disco, gangster, a Peter Gunny gangster mishmash. Alice has a Jim Morrison vocal influence so I’m not surprised at your comment.
One of my prized autographs is Tony Levin’s… saw him with The California Guitar Trio.
Yes, he is everywhere… ooooh hahahahahhhh!!!!
Be well-comed to my nightmare.
People mentioned Bob Ezrin and rightfully so, except it’s Lou Reed’s Berlin that comes to my mind. WTMN reminds me of Berlin as if played by Roxy Music.
If anyone is curious about where the word 'Nightmare' came from, look up, The Mare... Warning: Nightmares may result from that search. ;-]
You like to mention Alice and James Bond. Funny because they actually did a Bond theme for The Man With The Golden Gun but didn't get used I think mainly because of their reputation, but it's a pretty cool song. Starting with this lp is when Alice started using more professional musicians, Not to demean the original band because I love them. But even to this day he uses top tier musiciansA listers so to speak.
I'm not 'ride-or-die' Alice but I've had their 'Greatest Hits' and his first four solo albums since they were released. I was a slightly warped kid. But they are all still in my regular rotation. REALLY looking forward to your opinion on the rest of this one.
My favorite album of Alice. Cold Ethel!!! Only women Bleed!!! The Black Widow!!!
Great start, JP! One of AC’s most accessible albums. A number of the songs are simpler than other albums but they’re catchy and the album as a whole quite enjoyable.
Happy Sunday Justin! ALICE❗This brings me back to grade school. Awesome album. Try my favorite Alice song- Only Women Bleed.🐈⬛🦇🐀💀🎃😎
This is a really great album..... please do all of it... also do Schools Out, Muscle of Love, Billion Dollar Babies and Love it to Death time permitting...... Blue Turk is a must listen.... on a different note Spirit - 12 Dreams of Dr Sardonicus.... the entire album is amazing.
Yes! So happy to see you do this one.
Another version?
Where he sings with.....
The Muppets!. 🙂
Love that you’re enjoying the Cooper ride! Keep it up bud and enjoy the ride!
The band went on to do 1 lp without Alice under the name "Billion Dollar Babies". It's not bad.
Actually the Alice Cooper group made albums from’69-‘74. Alice and Dunaway from the original ACG were art lovers and that and James Bond and other tv and movie aspects influenced their music. Btw, I recommend doing Devil’s Food and Black Widow should be reacted to together because they belong together.
The last group effort came out in late '73. Just fyi.
@@Drummingvulture Okay, I believe you, but I’m pretty sure it says ‘74 on my copies of Muscle of Love.
@@72KingDavid It'll take you ten seconds to look it up . . .
It certainly didn't hurt that he faced no legal obstacles to the Alice Cooper name.
Welcome JP, you belong here with this smoking tune! I do wish you picked Billion Dollar Babies, though. You’re gonna have to go back for that gem of an album later.
Hi Justin. Dave From The Smoke. I'm a bit scared of a Black Night, so I'll pass on Alice's welcome! Just enjoying the song instead, which gets a lot of radio airplay in the UK, especially the Planet Rock channel. Tbh, I didn't realise there was a difference between the band and his solo stuff. Great reaction - yes, it builds up instrumentally really well, and I love your Tony Levin moment! Interesting to liken it to The Doors - I can see that.
P.S. my song ref Black Night is by Deep Purple.
A couple of suggestions and something a bit different to what you normally review. Both great songs IMO.
Wild Frontier by Gary Moore
November Rain by Guns 'n' Roses
Looking forward to your reaction to "Cold Ethyl". This should be fun!
My 10 year old self sang it in the school talent show in '75. Looking back I'm a little surprised my parents didn't get some blowback. Maybe I sucked so bad the adults tuned me out.
🥶😘
Amazing production
For your Halloween theme you need to do a song called Mongoose by Elephant's Memory. Trust me, it will generate a great reaction from you and anyone who listens to it. It was an underground hit in 1970 getting to number 50 on Billboard. Very bad assed.
From what I understand, Alice Cooper is the nicest golf-playing goth-rockers of all time. I'd really like to just know the guy.
Pretties For You was produced by Frank Zappa and Ian Underwood.
"Welcome To My Nightmare" is Alice Cooper's final 'Great Album' in a row that started in 1971 with "Love It To Death". Then came "Killer", "School's Out", "Billion Dollar Babies" and "Muscle Of Love". After that, Vincent Furnier sacked all of his former musicians, changed Alice Cooper from being the band's name to his own and released "Welcome To My Nightmare" in 1975. A few minor failed releases followed, he got into rehab for an alcohol problem and had a resurgence in inspiration and a very good album with "From The Inside", a sarcastic look back on his experience during detox. The streak of great to fabulous albums from the early seventies was enough to make Alice Cooper a living legend and secure his name in R 'n' R history, to the point he was able to survive on his name. Since 1978 Alice Cooper had some minor to big succes with the release of some singles, but the albums were mostly "meh" as a whole.
He had a accident after they rock out in Brazil. I think that is why Vincent went into rehab. 3 million showed up. yeah Glen got sacked the greatest guitarist ever.. I have to ask his boyhood friend Skip Ladd.
Yeah I great reaction, nicely broken down
Thank you! 😃
only women bleed was another good one off of that album.
*Beardfish - Green Waves* (live at Uden) ... ?

Not a complaint against Alice, just a thought that cropped up. Unfortunately the song isn't very halloween, but it does rock somewhat.
Hi JP
You need to do thi whole album especially the Steven Trilogy. Please with a cherry on the top
I am a 62-year-old woman and of the thousands of songs I've listened to in my life, this is the only one that has ever made me wish I had a stripper pole😂
If you liked this you will love "Schools Out" the lp. You will not be dissapointed.
The older he gets, the Darker his stuff is 😈
A great scene setter for a complex album. I don't want to spoil things for you so I won't say more but you have some great tracks to listen to on this album. One question, is this a remix? I'm hearing sounds not on the original mix.
That I know of there hasn't been a remix but there is a remaster with 3 alternate takes as bonus tracsk. It's far superior to the original CD pressing
The music changed so much when he grabbed the name and junked the band (they deserved better). That original group were killer players (pun not intended but I will take it).
I'm psychic!
nice
Steeeeven…
One of my all-time favourite songs of Alice's. A fucking masterpiece.
A so called "classic" as we used to call it but for me this concept album is too pompous, like a Hollywood musical and I don't like that. In short, for me Alice Cooper in solo is not worth the Alice Cooper Band, except for some of his future albums as From the Inside, Flush the Fashion, Special Forces and Zipper Catches Skin.
4me Disappointing opener. Sonically a trifle too tame, melody and instrumentation too conventional and repetetive. Repeat. Repetetive.the LP? I heard it as a kid and always thought yeah that’s one to look out for. 45 years later, here we are. Diolch.
A disappointing opener? 😳🤯
@@AQueryan maybe my expectations were misguided & too high
Man u hit it on the head with Doors sound.
