When Maximus asks if anyone's been in the army, and one of the gladiators says that he served under him, it goes to show just how much respect he had from his men. That guy knew exactly who he was, and didn't say a word to anyone.
Even crazier, the guy who served under him went from being a soldier to a slave. Meaning that he was either a deserter or committed some act of extreme dishonor and was sold into slavery. Even a man lacking in honor still respects and follows him.
Most reactors miss the point when Maximus says how long he's been away from home. It's not just the length of time, it's really that he knows it to the day and the half day how long it's been.
"Did he say he's yielding crops after this?" He's an experienced soldier and general who epitomizes the idea, 'It's better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war.' And he would much rather be on his farm than at war.
The Roman (and Greek) ideal was a citizen soldier who only served in times of emergency to defend the Republic and then went home to his farm. But in practice, by the time of the events of this movie (the reign of Marcus Aurelius), that was more a nostalgic relic than reality, and the legions were mostly professional troops.
@Time4utube is definitely one of my all-time favorite movies even. I meant he had The Insider, Gladiator, and A Beautiful Mind come out three years in a row he could have easily won Best actor for all 3. LA Confidential came out a few years prior to those.
The actor who played Proximo (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta (after a bet), he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.
"Is it normal to cry?" For this movie.... YES. I always do. And the score is amazing especially "Now we are free". Interesting backstory on that song. Enjoyed watching with you. Thanks. Ciao.
Quintas was sworn to the emperor, no matter who it was. In the final fight, he upheld the rules of the Colosseum by denying the emperor a sword. Also, they showed the difference between a noble who knew how to fence versus a soldier who knew how to kill.
there was a scene (in the full director's cut, but it was cut in the theatrical version) before the last fight, when Quintus, as if apologizing and justifying himself, says to Maximus: "I'm a soldier. I obey.", to which Maximus replies with the words of Marcus Aurelius: "Nothing happens to any man that he is not formed by nature to bear." These words made Quintus rethink his role and redeem himself to Maximus
The Praetorian Guard were sworn to protect the *Empire*, and they are suspected of killing a lot of bad *Emperors*. But in that first scene, Quintus didn’t yet know how bad Commodus would turn out to be.
What I didn't understand in that last fight, Commodus has his sword knocked out of his hand, why couldn't he just pick it back up instead of asking for a new one?
Fun fact: in the scene where Maximus founds his family murdered, Crowe was supposed to just get to a mark on the ground, fall to his knees and cry while the camera showed the hanging feet. Crowe came to Ridley Scott and said to him that he didn’t agree with the scene being only that, that he had to at least get to their feet and kiss them. He said that Maximus would feel he ultimately failed them, but that he wouldn’t fail them at least at getting to them. Ridley said that it would look ridiculous, but Crowe insisted. He was allowed to give it a shot, so they did one take. Ridley Scott was impressed, but apparently didn’t want to verbally admit he was wrong, so he just said to Crowe “just a little less snot”. So they tried again and the shot was included (thank God for that).
Máximas represents the light of masculinity a life of service duty and honor. Commodus represents the darkness of masculinity a life of selfishness obsession and cruelty. Marcus represents all men who see both these things as the fruit of themselves. It is the journey that seeks to walk in the light before death meets us.
This movie defined a significant part of my childhood. Holidays up at my dad's place, headphones on, blasting the DVD of this over and over just coz i loved the battle scenes and the music so much ^_^. Amazingly i was able to see this at the cinema way under-age , my dad was a wizard at sneaking me and my brother into movies that were certified far older lol. Absolutely epic.

But with some good food for dinner and this movie , made me feel a lot better. That is, until I got to the last scene -- then I was bawling like a baby! lol. 'Now we are Free' is one if the best songs in film. I think the only other film song to have made such an impact on me was 'Promentory' from Last of the Mohicans
Hi Catherine. The soldiers ordered to execute Maximus were Commodus’ Praetorian bodyguards. They have no loyalty to Maximus. An artistic choice to differentiate them from Maximus’s Legionnaires, the Praetorians wear black armor. Maximus was a farmer. Rubbing dirt in his hands was a farmer getting ready for the ‘dirty’ work ahead back home in the Philippines. One of the most perfect films I’ve ever seen, that at the moment I have no desire to see the sequel. Maybe, until after a few more years

Crazy good movie. When it came out, it was one of those movies everyone at the cinema came out raving about it. Won a bunch of Oscars but coulda/shoulda won more...such as the score, and maybe best supporting actor for Pheonix to go with Russel Crowe's deserved best actor.
The line where Commotus says, "AM I NOT MERCIFUL?" was not scripted, so the actress Connie Nielsen was totally caught off guard. Best movie ever. Also, Olive Reed, who played Proximo, actually died during the filming of Gladiator. So many fantastic actors here.
"We're watching Gladiator today..." that's all you had to say, let's friggin' go. One of my fave films ever made! Perfect combo of amazing writing, characters, music and action. Cool fact - the opening battle is filmed in Bourne Woods, England in an area of the forest already fixed for deforestation so the fire in that battle is real, Ridley Scott just helped to speed up the deforestation process. P.S. props to War Doggo! There was a dream that was Rome...

i've never been moved to tears by an "action" movie like i am by this one. it's been one of my very favourite movies since first seeing it in theatre when it was released. i thoroughly enjoyed crying along with you during this video. the end gets me every time
I was a kid when I first saw this movie.I was 10 I shed so many tears back then in 2000. When maximus died. And now you share those tears. The lady singing her name is "Lisa Gerard" the song named at the end is we are now free
This movie is my second favorite film of all time and I try and watch it at least once a month and I cry every time at the end and that’s okay. What we do in life echos in eternity is such a true line and Maximus definitely lived a life of honor
The man with the golden mask/helmet that fight Maximus, is played by Sven-Ole Thorsen. He has never had a main role, he has only played smaller parts (like this in Gladiator) during his whole career. Do a search on him and I can almost guarantee that you have seen him before 😊👍
It was truly a life altering experience hearing it live. As soon as I started to cry at his concert I KNEW I needed to freaking get my shiz together and finally watch this movie!
@CatherineLaSalle I also heard it first before watching. My bro would listen to this song a lot at home, and at high volume. I liked the song, but I LOVED it after I watched the movie (through channel surfing) 😊
One of the best films ever from acting, score and epic. When I first saw this I knew a tiny bit of German since I dated a girl from Germany (I'm in the USA) in the 90's but I could understand the German barbarian in the beginning.
"Is it normal to cry?" As a grown man who cries every time I see this movie, yes it's completely normal. You know how you always see those memes/shorts about how men want to just go out in a blaze of glory instead of peacefully in their beds? This movie shows why. We want to know that at the end of our lives, we died protecting something with cared for. We want to be remembered by those we leave behind, and have no regrets as we move on to meet those who went before us.

@@CatherineLaSalle Thanks for the reply. I was quite upset that year when "The Insider" received Oscar nominations but the Oscar(s) actually went to the movie "The American Beauty". I grudgingly saw that movie later (it was released later here in India) and I thought okay, that one is good too. It has Kevin Spacey in the lead role. If you like Kevin Spacey then another powerhouse movie is "LA Confidential" with innumerable stars including Russel Crowe. If you like crime thrillers that one is among the top suggestions. Russel Crowe is such a talented actor he fits in any role and makes it his own. Regards from India
I just rewatched this last week and I cried at the end and surprisingly it was the Percy Jackson books that let me know that Commodus was actually Rome's most psychotic emperor
The real Emperor Commodus did fight gladiators in the arena in order to prove his manliness, but just as in the movie, he cheated: he made his opponents use swords made of soft lead while he used a real weapon.
@@justonecornetto80 Caligula is my standard response to people who complain about politics today: as long as we haven't elected a horse to the Senate, we're still doing a little better than Rome.
@CatherineLaSalle yeah it was actually in the Trials Of Apollo book series but all those books are in the same universe so I just call them all Percy Jackson books
First reaction video of you I have seen. I sub'd when you said this was a Hans Zimmer score and you were a fan of his music. John Williams and Hans Zimmer are my two favorite composers. This was an awesome movie, but Hans puts us through that emotion. Movies need that music, that emotional touch. He did it perfect!
Aww thanks so much for watching, I’m honored to hear you’ve subscribed - much appreciated! When it comes to Hans Zimmer’s work especially, I try to imagine some of the films he’s scored with a different soundtrack, and it really makes me realize how much I take his genius for granted when it comes to all of the epic films he’s done (many of which are so epic BECAUSE of his impact!)
Commodus didn't order Maximus' family killed because he was angry. He murdered them to eliminate any heirs and his property could be confiscated. Very common then
Ohhh I hope you enjoyed! Based on the comments section here I fear it doesn’t hold a candle to this one, but I still want to go see a movie like this on the big screen!

Marcus Ulpius Traianus and Publius Aelius Hadrianus (both from Hispania, actual Spain), were the best and greatest emperors of the Roman Empire. Marcus Aurelius was a great one, probably the most cultured and profound, having his written testimonies as reliable proof.
Marcus Aurelius was played by the first Dumbledore, yes (Richard Harris). Harris appeared in the first two HP films, but later on died. Therefore, Michael Gambon continued playing Dumbledore in the rest of HP saga. Also, Richard Harris, had many stories of carousing and escapades with Peter O´Toole (and also an incident with the aforementioned Oliver Reed)
Don't feel bad about being late for this movie. I only watched it later in high school and there are plenty of others I haven't gotten around to watching. Another really good Ridley Scott Epic is Kingdom of Heaven (Make sure to watch the Director's edition as there was a lot of key stuff cut from the theatrical version). It depicts the events leading up to the 3rd Crusade and has Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson, Eva Green and a bunch of other really good actors. It also has an amazing soundtrack although I can't remember the composer off the top of my head.
Maximus’ own soldiers didn’t betray him. It was the praetorian guard (the dudes in purple). They’re essentially the emperor’s secret service, not the normal soldiers in Maximus’ army
History teacher/buff here. I was 19 or so when this came out. Saw it in the theater with my dad. When the barbarians showed up at the beginning ready for battle I heard their war cry and thought "jesus - that's not Germanic language - that's the war cry of the Zulu nation from South Africa"....almost as if the soundtrack from the 1964 movie Zulu was ripped off entirely. Years later, I learned that Ridley Scott loved Zulu so much that he decided he wanted to use their war cry from the movie and felt like it was so intense it helped set the mood for the battle against the romans. Love to see others like the same things I do.
Absolutely A1 reaction. So many subtleties in this movie, not sure you missed ANY of them. Equally, a comprehensive & insightful summary. I simply HAD TO join, on the strength of this watch alone. Keep up the good work. ; )
Not many supporting actors can hold their own in movies the same way Joaquin did as Commodus, I will still defend the hill that Joaquin also steals scenes he is in for Gladiator. This film is a masterpiece.
It is fashionable to say so, as Joaaquin's star has risen. But actually Crowe had by far the hardest part. (And Phoenix said so himself.) Not only did he have to carry the whole epic story, do the action scenes (he did his own stunts and the mark on his face after the cavalry charge was when his horse reared into a tree and he cut his face on branches) but he had the difficult task of making a traditional action hero believable. Most epic heroes end up bland and wooden. Crowe took the whole hero thing to next level while still being a human being with believable emotions. His acting is extremely subtle. The very first scene looking at the robin. The scene on the roof with Juba. The final scenes when he is between two worlds as he dies. Some recent A List actors have tried to lead this kind of epic with no where near the success. Villains, on the other hand, are far more free-wheeling to play. You can really have fun and ham them up as much as you like.
For real, he absolutely stole the show. I couldn’t look away, he was captivating! It feels criminal that I’ve gone this long being a fan of his without seeing this performance!
According to Google, a male adult Tiger ranges between 200 and 680 lbs. with females ranging between 140 and 370 lbs. 200 seems small for a tiger, and they look fairly large, so probably closer to 400 lbs. for these tigers.
From Hans Zimmer I recommend his first work in Hollywood, the one he did for Rain Man with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, a beautiful soundtrack, a mix of electronics with flute. That work opened more doors for him in Hollywood. And speaking of Ridley Scott and Hans Zimmer, they have made more movies together, I recommend for reactines: Black Rain, Thelma and Louise, Black Hawk Down and Hannibal.
Seeing the emotion you had in all the climactic parts brought me back to when I first saw it! Just saw the sequel and while I'm part of the group that said it doesn't need a sequel, it still was enjoyable from an entertainment standpoint. I agree the soundtrack is GOATED forever.

This is my favorite film of all time. I studied Ancient History and Latin and whilst this film takss some liberties with history, it also does a brilliant job of staying true to it, especially in its portrayal of Marcus Aurelius. The use of his own words in the script was masterful. I urge everyone to read Meditations. One of the best books ever published. Marcus' thoughts in diary entry form. He truely was one of the greatest philosphers to ever live and an incredible Stoic. If you cant get your hands on the book, google his quotes. They are still so relevant now almost 2000 years later.
I'm not sure if anyone's said this yet because there's a lot of comments but the men who arrested Maximus after Commodus killed the previous emperor were not Maximus' soldiers. Except for Quintus (the guy who betrayed Maximus and told the guards to execute him), the men were Praetorian Guards not soldiers from the army. That means they were from Rome and served directly as the imperial family's guards. They don't really know Maximus and were loyal to Commodus. Commodus had to move very fast to get rid of Maximus because if Maximus had had time to get out and rally his men (an entire army loyal to him), it would have been over. Quintus was imperative in this maneuver. He was an ambitious man who probably betrayed Maximus after being offered power by Commodus. Later in Rome we see that he's been promoted to the head of Commodus' Praetorian Guard, a very prestigious position.
"Today i saw a slave become more powerful than the emperor of rome." What a line. I wished that people would get the meaning of it, especially for today's times.
It is indeed rare to find war movies that have thousands of real extras instead of CGI, I'd recommend for that the movie "Alexander" from 2004, it is the best depiction of antiquity wars ever filmed, even though initially the movie had bad reviews because of certain casting choices and slow pacing if you're not that much into the presented historical period, it's a very well researched and directed film especially regarding the large scale battles.
So many great lines and the acting is all on point and of course the action sequences, the Hans Zimmer music as you said great reaction from you as always.

"Is it normal to cry?" For this movie.... YES. I always do. And the score is amazing especially "Now we are free". Interesting backstory on that song. Enjoyed watching with you. Thanks. Ciao.
Thanks so much for watching along!! I’m relieved to learn that we all cried here lol
Fair point, he had no choice but im glad he came around in the end 🤘🏼
The Praetorian Guard were sworn to protect the *Empire*, and they are suspected of killing a lot of bad *Emperors*. But in that first scene, Quintus didn’t yet know how bad Commodus would turn out to be.
What I didn't understand in that last fight, Commodus has his sword knocked out of his hand, why couldn't he just pick it back up instead of asking for a new one?
I didnt put attention to that, maybe the sword was broken? And thats why he was asking for a new one?@@GreatOutdoors1
Apparently the actress who played Lucilla did not know that Joaquin was going to yell in her face in that scene so her reaction was genuine.
46:38 My dad took me to see this when it first came out. At the end, there was not a dry eye in the theater.
Máximas represents the light of masculinity a life of service duty and honor. Commodus represents the darkness of masculinity a life of selfishness obsession and cruelty. Marcus represents all men who see both these things as the fruit of themselves. It is the journey that seeks to walk in the light before death meets us.
*Maximus*
Gladiator is and will forever be one of my absolute favourite films of all time.
Strength and honour
You sold me queer giraffes.
That scene with him walking through the crowd of gladiators after revealing himself is so EPIC. It's what pushed me to name my son Maximus.
Ahaha shoutout to your dad for smuggling you in! I imagine seeing this as a kid hits DIFFERENT
@@CatherineLaSalle Yup, it definitely started a love for movies at a young age.
I actually just managed to get front row tickets to Hanz Zimmer Live for next year!

I saw this for the first time on DVD, it was the first DVD I ever watched in fact as at the time DVD Players had just started reaching commodity prices. Oddly enough, despite it being a great movie I probably hadn't watched it since watching it on DVD decades ago and recently re-watched it on streaming and was asking myself "why have I not re-watched this again in all these years?" Great film.
My second favourite movie.
You are not alone crying to that scene, its a beautiful ending about courage, heroism and love.
Love your reaction, and it’s ok to cry on this movie if you don’t you don’t have a heart, I’ve seen this movie like 20 times and all 20 times I cried

Apparently you don't need to waste your money on part 2. By all accounts it seems to be a movie that's quantity over quality...
Ahahaha I always feel bad in a way whenever I can get others choked up as well, but that’s a testament to how epic and beautiful this movie is! I see why it’s up there in so many peoples’ all time favorites

I remember seeing this on a vhs tape when I was teaching in South Korea back in 2002; I was feeling very lonely and not very happy with my job. But with some good food for dinner and this movie , made me feel a lot better. That is, until I got to the last scene -- then I was bawling like a baby! lol. Along with the story, acting, it's the music that really hits you in the feels, more than most music that I've ever heard!
I love how wry she was throughout most of the movie, but ultimately the ending still ended up making her cry.

I saw this in the theater in May 2000.
Maybe, until after a few more years
Holy crap, in the Philippines?
The Roman Empire truly was massive! 😂😂😂
@@happyslapsgiving5421 The country is predominantly ‘Roman’ Catholic. 😁 Farming, plowing and planting crops were taught in grades 5 to 6. You were graded on your harvest. I didn’t do well in math, but had the biggest cabbage at grade 6. 😂
Ahhhhhh that makes so much sense in regards to his habit of touching the sand/dirt before battle! Really good observation
Wooooooaaaahhh, shoutout to the location scouts for picking that out, that’s wild! That opening battle really kicked things off with a bang, I knew we were in for a treat from there on

Gladiator is an amazing movie
i cannot believe I have slept on it for this long, I'm severely ashamed!!
Do a search on him and I can almost guarantee that you have seen him before 😊👍
'Now we are Free' is one of my favorite movie soundtracks. It's just so beautiful. It must have been amazing to hear live.
"Is it normal to cry?"
As a grown man who cries every time I see this movie, yes it's completely normal.
I love how you said his family is calling to him, that is exactly right, he went home in the end.
Is it possible to be sad yet happy at the same time 😭🥲

Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard have their magic repeated in the movie "The Insider" Starring Russel Crowe and Al Pacino among other greats. A must watch. Regards from India,
Ooooh I will have to check that out - they are absolute powerhouses together with this music!
You obviously haven't heard of Caligula and Nero.
@@justonecornetto80 Caligula is my standard response to people who complain about politics today: as long as we haven't elected a horse to the Senate, we're still doing a little better than Rome.
Woooooaaah wait he made it into the Percy Jackson series?! 👀
Very common then
Just saw Gladiator II yesterday! Great reaction and glad you could revisit your Roman era 😉 Glad you’re back and hope you had a good trip!

I KNEW he seemed familiar - had no idea / couldn’t pinpoint that he was Dumbledore while I was watching though!
Composer is the great Harry Gregson Williams 👌🎶🎵🎶🎵 He did Gladiator 2 this time
Maximus’ own soldiers didn’t betray him.
Catherine: "Is it normal to cry?
Me: "Are You Human? If so...YES!"
"Tell me what you've been doing busy little bee"
Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, for me is the star here

One of my favorites! That soundtrack is amazing. Still gives me goosebumps. I need to go see that Hans Zimmer show when it is in my area for sure.
Joaquin Phoenix was only 24 at the time of this movie - incredible talent. Someone who's born to act.

Women: So how often do you guys think of Rome
Guys: 🥲For Rome!
I watched the second one the other day. All I got to say is lower your expectations and you might enjoy the movie.
Great reaction, I love this movie & absolutely love the music in this as well, fricken gorgeous.

"Today i saw a slave become more powerful than the emperor of rome." What a line. I wished that people would get the meaning of it, especially for today's times.
Great reaction, nice emotion shown it's okay to cry haha, can't believe you wait this long for this film though!
Anyone I ever watched this movie with, myself included, had shed tears by the end of the movie. 👍
So many great lines and the acting is all on point and of course the action sequences, the Hans Zimmer music as you said great reaction from you as always.
