Nowhere on this song does Paul take lead, it's John's baby with Paul and George singing harmony with him. A great track and one of my favorite Beatles tracks, it's way up there on my list, like maybe top 3. Peace ❤
That joke never get old, Justin! Lyrically introspective, following the song 'Help!' earlier in the year. The Dylan influence writ large again as John struggled to come to terms with unimaginable fame. A real step change from standard love songs. The sound is very Byrds like as well - although of course The Byrds were directly influenced by The Beatles! The harmonies from John, Paul and George are glorious. As you say, the guitar solo was performed by both John and George in unison on their identical Sonic Blue Fender Stratocasters. George then added the final touch to the solo by adding a harmonic to ring out into the next verse. Always wanting to try new things, they suggested having a more brash sound for the solo. In the book “The Beatles Recording Sessions,” Paul explained: "I remember we wanted very treble-y guitars - which they are - they’re among the most treble-y guitars I’ve ever heard on record. The engineer said, ‘Alright, I’ll put full treble on it,’ and we said, ‘That’s not enough,’ and he said, ‘That’s all I’ve got, I’ve only got one pot and that’s it!’ And we replied, ‘Well, put that through another lot of faders and put full treble up on that. And if that’s not enough we’ll go through another lot of faders and…’ so we were always doing that, forcing them. They said, ‘We don’t do that,’ and we would say, ‘Try it. Just try it for us. If it sounds crappy, OK, we’ll lose it, but it just might sound good.’ I always wanted things to be different because we knew that people, generally, always want to move on, and if we hadn’t pushed them the guys would have stuck by the rule books and still been wearing ties. Anyway you’d then find, ‘Oh, it worked!,’ and they were secretly glad because they had been the engineer who put three times the allowed value of treble on a song. I think they were quietly proud of those things."
...and vice versa! George's "If I Needed Someone" was a deliberate attempt to write something like the Byrds, after having spent some time with them in the US.
This was the first Beatles picture sleeve 45 I bought with my lawn mowing and newspaper delivery monies. I was eight. I still have it and the record collecting sickness.
For me the Beatles ,specifically when they started writing their own material was all about great harmony and melody .Like the Beach boys ,mamas and papas ,everley brothers ,simon and garfunkel ,the hollies .To name but a few.
One of my favourite Beatles songs. I've always thought of it as Lennon being auto biographical. The scene in the animated film, Yellow Submarine, where this is played is very moving, to the point of tear jerking. The whole thing can be viewed as a montage of music videos really. The twangy guitar is the sort of sound the Byrds were playing at the time. Think thats where George picked it up from. It works well. Nice one J.
With Rubber Soul, the Beatles broke out of every song being about teenage puppy love and offered something of substance. I have nothing against love songs, but it's good to expand your horizons into other aspects of life.
Wow, Rubber Soul was growing whiskers - it was nowhere to be found, I forgot we were doing it! Hopefully, this means we'll be back on the bus. Nothing to say about the song, except it's the purest gold. This took me back to the song as it lands originally, without the imagery of Jeremy Hillary Boob Ph.D., the "Nowhere Man" character from the animated Yellow Submarine movie, which usually seeps into hearing it. (If you haven't seen Yellow Submarine, you really should, it's wonderful.) And in going through the rest of Rubber Soul, please remember to hit "I've Just Seen a Face", "It's Only Love", "Day Tripper", and "We Can Work It Out", which may or may not be on the version of the album you're working from, but are all outstanding tracks associated with the period, and not on other studio albums original releases. Cheers!
I love this track, indeed I used to busk it for a while. It always reminds me of the old Beatles tape in the car as a kid, on drives with my old man. 😥❤🙃

One of my favourite tracks by The Beatles. Timeless!
It's about himself- John Lennon
Beatles>>>>>>>>>>>>>>everyone else.

Music simply doesn't get any better than this!
👍They were THE Masters and remain so!
Absolutely. I can understand some people not liking the Beatles, but not to respect their skill and influence is crazy.
Only XTC! 😂 I know, I know...
@@jtenaz I respect your fanaticism! 😁

Watching it on your Patreon server I'm struck by the irony of having to tell a computer that I'm human.
Yay! More Beatles! Beatles all the time!

Wow, track 4 already, and it's only taken 2 months, that must be a new record!
My top 5 most favorite Beatles song
Woa! You weren't there!
You were Nowhere, man!
One of the songs I most resonate with, i think most people can relate to it at some point in their life.
Great track.

As Lennon said "Rubber Soul" was the moment it all became contemporary".
Short and sweet. Their formula and it works.
Agreed :)

Song you wish you had written. Classic.

Paul takes lead on it? Why do you say that? He didn't.
Please do yourself a favor & listen to the 1999 stereo remix from the Yellow Submarine Songtrack & the mono version. You will not be disappointed.
