  • Measuring the piston to bore clearance on my Monster 659. Last week I realised I had A cylinders, but one A and one B piston, so figured I'd better measure them to see what was actually happening. Looking at the pistons, and the fact that they're quite different in appearance (one well oil stained), I remembered that I'd needed a pair of M659 pistons at one point, so I got a good s/h pair from Brian Rosser and I think I might have then matched the 4 into 2 pairs based on weight. So what I have here are a mismatched matched pair, if that makes sense. And, as it turns out, the A and B sizing thing is kind of irrelevant when you're measuring to see what you really have.
If I really wanted to reduce the clearance on the vertical, I could have the skirt of that piston coated to increase its thickness. HPC can put a coating on them of up to 3 layers half a thou (0.01mm) think, meaning 1 layer gives you a reduction of 1 thou in piston to bore clearance. but, in this instance, being 0.01mm outside the new spec range is really nothing to worry about. It'll be fine.
