  • Reassembling the alternator side of the M659 engine. And making mistakes I'll need to address in a future video. Rambling about changes made to allow for possible future changes from carbs to injection.
In particular, a discussion about the different timing gears used for the various ECU - Marelli 1.6M, 1.5M, 59M, 5AM and Conti M3C - and the variations in master tooth cut out position that tells the ECU where in the cycle the engine is, combined with the difference in rotation sensor positioning - either alternator cover or engine cases.

These engine building videos are really good, I never thought I'd lean so much.

@@bradthebikeboy Absolutely, it's so good getting decades of experience in these vids. It's also making me think what combo's could be possible with the 4v desmoquattro's. I've got a 3 phase 748 sps engine sitting behind me that I'd like to build, i'll have to look in to it.

Great info as always! I had the nut come loose on my 748. The nut having the slits in it appears to be designed similar to cam pulley nuts in that it should be tight to screw on. Bought a new nut, but the loose fit on the threads was exactly the same as the old one, felt like the pitch was out of tolerance. So I ended up using the Nichols double nuts torqued to 186Nm and red loctite 263, and the belleville type dished washer.

yes, lots of people thought the nuts were wrong. 270nm and loctite, they don't come loose.

Got one finger already cut on these sharp edge of the rotor, really razor sharp actually.
Btw, the alternator nut had different part numbers over the years.. the latest being a bit higher, likely to improve grip on the crank

i looked when i first got the current 121d part # nut - 2014. i'm assuming they went 121a, 122a, 121d. not sure what happened to 121b and 121c. they all felt the same to me.
