Biking the World’s "MOST DANGEROUS" Country (El Salvador) - Day 8

- My goal is to change the perception of El Salvador. Welcome to my journey as I attempt to ride my bike across the entire country of El Salvador. El Salvador has been consistently ranked as having the most murders per capita in the entire world, leading El Salvador to acquire the perception of being the "most dangerous country in the world". When most people hear “El Salvador”, their mind likely jumps to negative thoughts like murder and gang activity, but I KNOW there are beautiful places to see and kind people to meet in El Salvador.
Despite what I have heard in the news about El Salvador, I decided to purchase a bike in San Salvador, the capital city of El Salvador, and attempt to bike across the entire country. My goal is to meet and understand the local people and form my own opinions of “the world’s most dangerous country”. During my bike trip across El Salvador, I’m hoping to discover what the media doesn't show us, a beautiful country filled with a beautiful culture and people. I'm hoping to create El Salvador news that is positive.
When I told others I was going to travel El Salvador, most people told me I needed to be careful. Most people said they wouldn’t visit El Salvador, let alone ride their bike alone across the world’s "most dangerous" country. Most people only know El Salvador through the lens of the media, and view El Salvador as a dangerous country to travel to and visit, especially as a tourist. However, I hope that my journey traveling El Salvador in 2022 can change perceptions of the country and even more, encourage you to challenge your preconceived ideas of El Salvador and form your own opinions of “the world’s most dangerous country”.
Of course, before traveling El Salvador, like any other country in the world, I would encourage everyone to research the country’s current situation beforehand to remain safe and optimize your time in the country.
To start off Day 8 of riding my bike across El Salvador, I wake up early in the morning to leave Suchitoto with the goal to bike 75km all the way to Santa Ana. I start off the morning biking about 20km to Aguilares, where I stop to get some breakfast. Unfortunately, just a few kilometers after breakfast my bike breaks down for the first time of the day. Luckily, I find a nice local named Isaac to help me get my bike chain back in the correct position so I can continue biking. After a few more hours of biking, I make it to the town of San Pablo Tacachico, where I meet another incredibly kind local El Salvadoran, and take a quick pit stop for a fruit smoothie and to cool down from the heat. Not long after leaving San Pablo Tacachico, my bike breaks down again. Luckily, I learned a thing or two from watching Isaac fix my bike chain the first time, so I was able to fix my bike on my own, which was good because I was in the middle of nowhere. After a few more hours of biking, I am met with road construction and detours before finally making it to Santa Ana. After a quick bite to eat, I explore the town center of Santa Ana, and I am pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the main square is and how colorful the buildings are.
So far I have felt extremely safe traveling El Salvador and am overwhelmed by the kindness and hospitality I am experiencing from the locals. I can't wait to continue exploring the country!

Despite the economic situation of El salvador, people always try to help or give free things to people. I just find it amazing. 💖

I carry my tool kit, pump, spare tube and patching kit in 5k+ rides, but I suppose getting stranded with a broken bike is part of the adventure.
I was trying to pack as light as possible, but it definitely would have come in handy 😂

You are from a really nice city!
Great video. I wish you would rename the titles and remove “the most dangerous country in the world”. Doing so you will do the people and country justice.
Thank you! My goal with this video series is to share the side of El Salvador that mainstream media doesn't show, the beautiful and kind side to the country!

Thanks Jose, enjoy your trip!!
I respect your adventurer spirit, a word of advice thouhg: If you go bike touring to another country, you ideally should have some experience servicing bikes and carry the tools to do so. It can be very useful specially in those lonely roads.
I agree, thanks for the recommendation!!
Great 👍🏻
Cheers Boris!
👍👍👍
Dude you are crazy in a good way
haha thanks Carlos!!
😃👍
Cheers!
@@MattKramerTravels Cheers big ears!
It looks a lot of fun to ride around El Salvador, however there may still be some risk involved in your adventure, like the mishap you went thru with that trucker on the road; it is always good to be cautious in certain circumstances, most people are nice but others are real jerks. Looks like you will be leaving the country soon, that's too bad because there are much more beautiful places to visit if you had more time in your hands, like La Libertad, El Zonte, Sonsonate, Ahuachapan, etc.
I notice that you stayed away from the main highways. You took the secondary road to Santa Ana. Why didn’t you stake the Pan American Highway?
I was following my GPS for what I thought was the best route, but I wasn't aware of the construction unfortunately
Please be safe Matt… ❤❤❤
I will, thank you so much!
do you know of any bike rentals specifically roadbikes in El Salvador?
tnanks
I am not sure. I purchased my bike near the main square in San Salvador
If you ride with a Road bike it wu'd make alot of different on Speed and Comfort..
🥰🤩👍👍🤜🤛🚵🚵♀️
Thank you!
Hola mateo mi hijo también se llama Mateo
Hola Jose, que chivo!
You went Though the wrong route. There is a new street (freeway) to enter the city. But, I'm sure you know by now.
Thanks for sharing Mauricio! This is the way I was directed to get into Santa Ana but I’m glad to hear there’s another option
most Dangerous country ?? is one of the safeset country in the world right now
please don't dont put us down !
He did not; hence "most dangerous" is in the quotation mark and he is proving otherwise. But for most people who have never traveled to your country; it is still very dangerous.
El salvador IS NOT the most dangerous country. Do not lie, do bot stigmatize the contry… 🥵
LA RUTA QUE TOMASTES HACIA GUATEMALA SON RUTAS ALTERNAS CARRETERAS ALTERNATIBAS NO SON LA CARRETERA PRINCIPAL
gracias por compartir esto conmigo Reni
Thanks to GOD with the good management and the best president in the world Nayib Bukele, El Salvador is no longer the most dangerous country in the world, and it will be one of the safest in the world👍✌😜
El Salvador is a special country and I hope more people visit!
Why you keep saying is the most dangerous country if you're seeing the reality with your eyes but you don't say it? I guess is very heroic to bike in the most dangerous country in the world right?
Hi!! Am carlos am from el salvador!
But don't call the most dangerous country of the world!!
El salvador is different now!
I live in Baltimore!! Come overhere and make that video at the downtown and then we talk!!
Thanks for sharing Carlos!
