Biking the World’s "MOST DANGEROUS" Country (El Salvador) - Day 9

  • My goal is to change the perception of El Salvador. Welcome to my journey as I attempt to ride my bike across the entire country of El Salvador. El Salvador has been consistently ranked as having the most murders per capita in the entire world, leading El Salvador to acquire the perception of being the "most dangerous country in the world". When most people hear “El Salvador”, their mind likely jumps to negative thoughts like murder and gang activity, but I KNOW there are beautiful places to see and kind people to meet in El Salvador.
Despite what I have heard in the news about El Salvador, I decided to purchase a bike in San Salvador, the capital city of El Salvador, and attempt to bike across the entire country. My goal is to meet and understand the local people and form my own opinions of “the world’s most dangerous country”. During my bike trip across El Salvador, I’m hoping to discover what the media doesn't show us, a beautiful country filled with a beautiful culture and people. I'm hoping to create El Salvador news that is positive.
When I told others I was going to travel El Salvador, most people told me I needed to be careful. Most people said they wouldn’t visit El Salvador, let alone ride their bike alone across the world’s "most dangerous" country. Most people only know El Salvador through the lens of the media, and view El Salvador as a dangerous country to travel to and visit, especially as a tourist. However, I hope that my journey traveling El Salvador in 2022 can change perceptions of the country and even more, encourage you to challenge your preconceived ideas of El Salvador and form your own opinions of “the world’s most dangerous country”.
Of course, before traveling El Salvador, like any other country in the world, I would encourage everyone to research the country’s current situation beforehand to remain safe and optimize your time in the country.
Day 9 of my adventure biking across El Salvador starts off leaving the big city of Santa Ana and heading toward El Salvador's coffee region! I start off biking to the town of Chalchuapa to visit the beautiful ancient Mayan ruins of Tazumal. To my surprise, the town of Chalchuapa is also incredibly beautiful with so many colorful streets. After admiring the Tazumal ruins and soaking in a bit of tranquility, I hop back on my bike before taking a quick stop in the town of Atiquizaya for some delicious El Salvadoran pupusas. Pupusas are everywhere in El Salvador, and I really do love them! Unfortunately after lunch I run into some more problems with my bike and I end up getting a few parts replaced. Luckily, I meet many kind locals who help me get my bike back up and running. A few hours later, I finally get to the town of Ahuachapan, which is my stopping point for day 9. If all goes to plan, I will complete my goal and ride my bike to the Guatemala border tomorrow!
So far I have felt extremely safe traveling El Salvador and am overwhelmed by the kindness and hospitality I am experiencing from the locals. I can't wait to continue exploring the country!

Hey Matt, I have been enjoying your videos, I am originally from El Salvador and I enjoy cycling. I am quite impressed with your trip around the country. I would suggest when you get back home to visit your local Bike Co-Op, and take a class on bike fixing. Bicycle Co-Ops are community run bike shops, and often provide support for their neighbors. You could learn there how to adjust brakes, replace a flat tire, change a chain, and adjust your gears shifters. You could document and make a video about bike co ops and help to spread the word about them. That way other people could benefit from them. Take care and I am waiting for your next upload. Best wishes for you.

Hey Matt, I have been to a couple of this town, mostly Atiquizaya and Ahuachapan, as a matter of fact the people selling you the tostadas at the Park in Atiquizaya have been doing it for over 20 years. I have great memories of these towns. I am also planning to do this ride but I do want to make sure I bring a better quality bike with me and the necessary tools to fix it in case of a break down. Would you like to ride with me. I can take you to another little town called San Lorenzo which is about 7 kilometers from Atiquizaya, San Lorenzo is the best town in El Salvador and it is also Border with GUATEMALA.

The problem with your chain is the limit screw is not adjusted correctly. Maybe this will help you on your next trip.
I went riding my bike (that cost a little more than yours) all the way to Argentina from Los Angeles. I didn’t have any problems being a bicycle mechanic myself. Although you seem to be having a good trip a properly maintained bicycle would make it that much better.

I appreciate what you doing in El Salvador, you are giving a different perspective of what the country is all about. But "most dangerous in the world" is not accurate. that was a 2018 data. things have changed a lot since then
