Beneficial bacteria mainly built up on surfaces in ur aquarium(driftwood, gravel, sand, etc. ). Put some of the rock from your pond or tanks into the quarantine tank to help spend up that nitrate cycle. Those plants u add will also help eat up some of that ammonia so that's good.
Hi tobias. Love your work. I want to help you out. Before you buy fish I'd highly recommend even if its quarantine, is that you think about allowing the tank to cycle before adding fish. This may be why you have issues with your fish (diseases) etc because their immune systems get shocked by by poor water quality.
Hi Josh, thanks! Yeah I picked up some API quick start, so I will be cycling the tanks properly from now on
The other plant looks like anubias nana.. I love that one! Such an easy plant to grow and it looks great in the tank. Fish love them too! Thanks for sharing. I'm in the middle of starting a little tote tank for my new fish so I can quarantine them for a while before adding them into the new tank.
Yeah I think you are right! That anubias has grown a lot since I got it, I even propagated some for another tank. Best of luck with your tote tank! I think they are so practical for quarantining, I think they are great 😄
Like 4! Love all the homemade aquariums! Every quarantine tank I started turned into another tank! Lol those are pool goldfish!
Thanks James! That must be how you ended up with so many tanks! haha
Exactly! That's what always happens! Have a good night!
Thanks! Have a good night too
Camera work is amazing!
Thank you :)
Loved this vid
Thank you! and thanks for watching 🙏
Do ya need a lid? I'm using a smaller bin. Maybe half the size. Can see through it better than my larger tubs. But do I need the lid on it. More light without a lid?
Love it 😍
The flow is good for the common goldfish.. mine love it 🥰
Add a heater just to kill any parasites .. it helps with any fungus and such
The stronger the filter better air flow and goldfish poop a lot picks it up and also goldfish pass a lot of gases it helps with stronger airflow
Thank you 🙏 and yeah the goldfish seem to be doing fine with that filter, so I'm going to just leave it alone and I added the heater as well
Nice gold fish
Thank you Lyna!
Great vid!
Thanks Jake!
Hell yeah keep up the work man, if you ever come to Cincinnati let me know I have a ton of place for you to film
Awesome! Thanks Joe. If I'm ever there I'll be sure to let you know
I have a pleco that’s too big for my tank rn, I bought a 120 litre bin thing, would it be ok for the pleco which will also have a heater and filter
Yeah it should be fine, just check the recycle number on the plastic bin. From what I understand as long as it is recycle number 2 or 5 it should be fine
Hey i use the plastic bin as well to quarantine my fish
So I just did this for one of my wild largemouth bass hatchlings as a temporary quarantine tank as well. He’s having some trouble eating and I’m thinking the water temp is a bit too cold so it’s making him sluggish. Would a small heater be safe for a plastic container like this? It wouldn’t melt the walls of the tank?
I think a heater would be fine. The way I see it is, even if the heater were to heat the plastic up to 75 degrees, that's still colder than it would be at room temperature where I live, during the summer
Hi what filter are you using? I need one for a shallow tank like yours
Hi Emily, this is the filter I am using in this video amzn.to/2EccwsM
Tobias Holenstein thank you so much for your reply. I’ve just purchased one. I’ve used your video as a guide for my new aquarium thank you
What kind of plants you can put into plastic tank ?
The plants I put in were anubias and java fern 🙂
I wanted to do a set up like this myself, any trouble with it leaking? Oh the like for it in the description is wrong.
My bad, I didn't have a link for this aquarium bin, I just bought it at Target. However, the link for the aquarium filter is the filter that I am using in this video. I never had any problems with it leaking. It does bow out a bit, but it never cracked or leaked
@@TobiasHolenstein thanks, I'll check out the filter and stop by target lol.
Awesome, good luck with your tank!
I'm thinking about building one of these for my greenhouse as a permanent fixture for hydroponics. I'll add some substrate. Would you do anything else differently or recommend anything?
Thanks!
What filter is that?
It's the Tetra Whisper 40i
Can you send a link to the bin you use ? I can't find one big enough for a large calico oranda goldfish . Also what size bin do you recommend for one? Thank you!
Hi Bryan, I guess technically the bin I used wouldn't be big enough for a goldfish to live in permanently. It was only about 17 gallons and I was just using it to quarantine these fish. I bought this bin at Target and I was just looking at their website and they do have some bins that are bigger. I would say for an oranda you want one that is at least 20 gallons. I saw this 110qt bin which converts to 27.5 gallons. www.target.com/p/sterilite-110qt-clearview-latch-storage-bin-clear-with-purple-latch/-/A-13794501

💦💦 make a pool
I'd be careful. Look at the sides bowing out on this bin. It's not really strong enough to be trusted with water. Check out the Sterilite wheeled bins. They are much lower profile, have stronger sides, and hold water well. The 56qt model holds a little over 10 gallons of water. Add a sponge filter and some substrate, some plants... you've got an amazing little betta lagoon!
i have a question that i wish you answer
are the plastic tanks toxical for fish ? arent htey safe for fish ?
Some plastics can be toxic. So if you want to get a plastic container to keep fish in, you need to check the recycle number of the plastic. Usually it will be on the bottom of the container. If it has a number 5 or a 2, those should be fine
Yes yes !
I have number 5 inside the triangle
Is that good for it ?
Yeah that should be fine
Or a number 1, those are used in medical
Can you keep any type of fish in one ?? And for how long
You can keep most types of smaller fish in one of these. I would not recommend keeping goldfish in one of these. I just did it to quarantine these goldfish for a month before adding them to my pond. As long as you have a good established filter, a heater if necessary, and keep an eye on your water parameters, you should not have a problem with keeping fish in one of these long term.
Nice video man! Just a question how many gallons is that plastic tub? Cheers from holland!
Hi David! The tub is about 22 gallons, but I didn't have it filled to the very top
Tobias Holenstein ok thank you!
You're welcome!
@@TobiasHolenstein and how long you think it is?
Hi is their a chance of the sides bursting out?
I only had this setup for a month to quarantine these fish so I'm not sure if that can happen over time. I've seen pictures of other peoples aquarium bins online where they used things to brace the sides, but in the month that I had mine set up it didn't burst or anything. However, I would only recommend keeping a bin like this indoors. I think if it were to be kept outside in the sun, the plastic would become brittle over time.
Not sure if you ever figured out what that plant is, but I believe it's Anubias Barteri.
Thanks for letting me know! I've just been calling it Anubias
Where to buy these tubs
I got this one at Target
@@TobiasHolenstein great m from india and if they sell it here m gonna buy one
Did you eventually enforce the bin somehow to prevent warping? I want to buy a 34 gallon container like that as a permanent tank and I'm trying to figure out how to do it.
No I never enforced the bin. It was a temporary setup and for the month or so that I had it set up like this, it seemed to be fine, although the long sides did bow a bit. As for an idea for enforcing the bin, I wonder if you took the lid of the bin and cut out the inside of the lid, leaving the rim, if that would be enough to prevent the bin from warping. Maybe worth a try.
Quick question of someone can answer Will they die of poisoning?
Hi Daniel, I am assuming you are talking about poisoning from ammonia right? Looking back at this video there were a few things that I didn't know at the time. One thing is that the filter I put in this bin was not cycled. What I should have done is taken some media out of either my pond or another one of my fish tanks and put it in this filter to jump start the nitrogen cycle. The only beneficial bacteria that I suppose was added to this bin was probably on the surfaces of the plants that I added, since they came from a fish tank at the pet store, although that definitely wasn't enough. I did keep up regular water changes so that probably helped a little. One thing about these particular goldfish is that they came from a way overstocked tank at the pet store, meaning that they were most likely not in the best water conditions when I got them, so I could assume that they were pretty hardy. Long story short, it's over a year later and these fish are all still alive and living a healthy life in my outdoor pond.
You don't need a heater for goldfish.....those goldfish you put in that bin can survive in freezing temps...as long as it doesn't ice over....goldfish hate heat fyi
Yeah at the time I thought it would be too cold for them, but now I know and I don't use heaters for them any more
Did the plastic bin work well for a quarantine tank? Looks awesome, great idea and great video!
It did! I quarantined them in there for the full 4 weeks. The plastic bin did bow a little when I filled it with water, but it never broke.
and thanks!
Another UA-camd I saw used 2 bins, one inside the other - did not bow after that.
Question! Does the beneficial bacteria from the cycled tank exist in the water column or is it attached to the substrate, plants etc.?
@@frankhoo-mook5039 substrate. Not in water column. Dont do that. He only added diet water. Not necessary. Instead add a decoration from cycled tank.
If anything the flow is too weak. Need wayy stronger flow
I feel like I've had a hard time telling if the flow is too weak or too strong. I always felt like if the flow is too strong the current will force the fish to always be swimming, but I'm not sure
Turning the water over about 4x per hour is plenty sufficient. The industry has sold us on an idea that we need way more flow than we do. What's missing here isn't flow; it's surface area and bacteria.
What's excessive here is stocking level. Goldfish are big, poopers, and big poopers.
@@TerraMagnus Yeah to be honest I didn't know much about the nitrogen cycle at all when I made this tank, but I did keep up the water changes and the fish were only in here for about 1 month as I quarantined them. I still have these fish in my pond and they are doing really well :)
Not sure why put dirty water in the bin, there no bacteria in it.
Yeah at the time I didn't know this
goldfish require high oxygen
Would you say the oxygen was sufficient in this aquarium bin? All the goldfish did fine btw and are now out in my pond
How come Americans call it bin, it’s plastic container
That's a good question. What country are you from?
Lol from the UK
Oh yeah for you guys isn't bin like saying trash can?
Tobias Holenstein yeah here bin is where you put the rubbish so yeah trash can
Oh ok haha
