I had a gold fish that lived 10 years. I just used water from the lake in front of my house because I thought it would be faster to fill up my big ass tank. Glad I helped out my little buddy.
That's not really how that works. Nitrifying bacteria live attached to surfaces like rocks and plants. You wouldn't get a substantial amount just from the water.

Generally anything less than 20 gallons I'd refuse that sale and even 20 gallons is pushing it... I know it's cliche to say don't listen to the pet store guy, but hell, don't listen to anybody. If you plan on taking on the privilege of caring for any kind of live creature do the research on your own so you yourself becomes the expert because in the end the only person you can really rely on is yourself. There's plenty of factual and well written reading material out there, especially about fish. There's no need to try to rely on some random stranger at the pet stores info.
Fish are not as dumb as you think they are. They can memorize faces, they have basic emotions like happiness and depression, and they have a way longer memory than you think they do. They're not just dumb blobs of flesh.
I agree. My fishes swim to the top of the tank when I put my fingers to on the tank and stay there until I put food or remove my finger. Believe it or not I've even seen them playing tag with each other (and I know this is tag because all of my fishes stick together and have never attacked each other. Keep in mind that these are different types of fish and not just regular goldfishes)

I learned that the hard way!! Now they're in a little pond in my room. And if you think cats running around the house at 4 am was bad, my fish like to splash around and move the rocks around in the middle of the night making so much noise. Oh, and forget aesthetic, they like to knock everything over and pull out the plants.
My goldfish named big tail is 14 years old Edit: guys my fish past away today. He was an amazing fish and he was extremely friendly. He interacted with everyone and he will be missed dearly 🙏. He also died just days after his long time companion Pebbles who was also a goldfish and about 7 years old. We think Big Tail became depressed after pebble’s death because he stopped eating. Pebbles had a spine problem and big tail used to lie underneath her to help support her back. He was an amazing fish and I can’t believe he’s gone.

How do you keep them safe from the filter system? When I was about 7 years old, I won a goldfish at the fair. I loved that fish. I named her Goldie and took very good care of her for years. She died because she got into the filter. I've been scared to have fish again. It's been 20 years.

Agree different animals need different filtration levels. Ironically too much filtration can be just as bad as not enough. Turtles are often the first to go for this since you need to filter them with a filter rated for 2 TIMES the tank's capacity. Regardless how much is actually filled AND requires DAILY cleanings of half hours. Yea I doubt 99% of "turtle owners" knows about this/cares to do this.
@@giovannirafael5351 I don't own any pets and never plan on owning any but what do you mean by "Why do people want pets that are not meant to be pets" and what pets are meant to be pets?
My narcissistic mother loves buying goldfishes as decorations (even though I beg her not to), but the longest she's managed to keep one alive is three moths. And we've had 4.
She needs one of those tanks with fake fish and fake plants in it. You know the one, where you press a button on the bottom and it sends bubbles to push the props around. That, or plastic plants. Fish are pets, not decoration. She needs to learn that.
Narcissistic? you mean she thinks she is the best fish owner in the world or sth? Good luck to you bro hope she listens and decides to learn to become a better fish owner
I still have my fish but yeah they are hard to take care of. I feel some people think it is a good first pet but I think a fish takes more care then a dog . Fish might cost less but they are a pain to take care of.
Everyone needs to understand that taking care of fish(es) requires just as much if not more care than a cat or dog. You cant just throw a fish in a bowl and expect it to survive, and even if it does survive at first, it wont for long and its not fair to the animal. Do your research before putting the life of another being in your hands. Period.
You're joking right? As much as a cat or dog? Also "fair to the animal"? It's a goldfish. It's intelligence isn't even comparable to that of a cat or dog. Pretty much every animal we eat is smarter than a goldfish.
@@Mersault26 So that makes animal cruelty right? Pigs are just as smart as a dog and smarter than a cat. Intelligence is not how we judge what we eat or how we treat things. Very helpful and useful information! But a couple notes One, there are a couple clips of blood parrots, which are cichlids, not goldfish, but have a similar look The other thing is that goldfish are social creatures and should be kept in at least a pair of trio, with around 20 to 30 gallons of water volume for each fish to help dilute their waste. A 40- or 55-gallon tank would be a good minimum for them It's also worth noting that this *only* applies to fancy goldfish, those with rounded bodies and long fins, as common goldfish and other long-bodied types tend to do best in large outdoor ponds due to their larger size and activity level Edit: Oh yeah, and here’s a bonus tip! Goldfish have very high oxygen demands, so having an airstone to help oxygenate the tank will be a great benefit for them
The first time I got fish, was a present from my mom and it was a tiger barb, but I only had a one gallon tank that my mom bought me too, thank you mom, anyways it died so we did so much more research, found a 20 gal tank on Kijiji with tons of supplies (water conditioner, bio support, test kits and so much more), tons of plants, a heater, auto feeder (I don’t use it because I love feeding my fish), a thermometer and tons of food for only 190 dollars (I paid for this one along with my younger brother). Then we got two betta fish, one for my brother and one for me and got a divider for them. They are happy now.
Nice info. But you forgot goldfish are carp, originate and still native to China about 2,000 years ago, they aren't for to release in natural environments because they're an invasive species, and some individuals grow over 12 inches(the record of the largest goldfish was 20 inches from mouth to tail fin). Not only that, feed the fish not just ordinary food, but premium and good quality food, because of the type of fish food you feed them, it depends on their health. Don't feed the fish starchy food or greasy food. These kinds of ingredients would cause your fish to have swimbladder, or worse, dropsy. If you have a fancy goldfish, keep it well check because its body is weaker than a regular long bodied goldfish. In another way of keeping the tank clean from ammonia, most of the time, bacteria isn't always a benefit. Use aquarium plants for beginners like Elodea, Ludwigia, and most common for outside ponds, Algae. Yes, algae. They are the basic food and filter for goldfish and are very convenient. Because of fish poop, algae multiplies substantially well and alot of times, their waste is oxygen and protein. Change the water 30-50% every two week if you want to keep your goldfish from feeling sick. Feed as much as your fish can eat in 1 minute, not 3 minutes. Let them have great care each day, and prosper them in new life. Apparently, if you want higher and better types of goldfish, China and Japan has some really expensive goldfish going on as we speak.
Sadly always had a hard time keeping the pH balance right started flipping around the tank and then died 😭 wish I knew about plants. Had him for 5 years
I bought a couple corkscrew plants for my goldfish tank, but one or two of my goldfish just keeps nipping on the plants whenever they are hungry for food. People would recommend the java fern plants; if they want live plants in their goldfish aquarium. I often do my water changes, but I have not been home for a while, but I have invested in a vacuum gravel to get all the debris from the bottom of the gravel besides scooping out water in the old fashion way. I buy my goldfish at my local Pet Smart.
Nice info, but you forgot that goldfish AREN'T carp. There are goldcarps, but the "normal" goldfish is called carassius gibelo which is related to the normal carp cyprinus carpio. Both are cypriniformes but a carp can grow over 1 meter. The biggest one I got was 1,07 m in length. But you got a amazing knowledge about fish👍👍
its kind of dumb to keep a fish in a small tank if you think about it, just imagine you literally cramped in a small area trying desperately to escape.
Try getting a Betta! They’re super great beginner fish that require significantly less work than goldfish! They ideally only need 5 gallons (you can go as small as you want but I seriously would say ABSOLUTE MINIMUM 1 gallon) and they don’t produce as much waste as goldfish!
@@mikennasmith you definitely need at LEAST 5 gallons for a single betta. One gallon is way too little. Also, for a betta it’s best if you put natural plants and gravel/sand instead of artificial. Bettas can jump out of the tank so use a lid but if you can’t get a lid use floating plants. Also, make sure you don’t have any sharp decorations because they can tear and damage the large fins of the betta. So, in conclusion, bettas aren’t that easy either.
@@burebistta1923 they’re a lot easier than goldfish! And yeah, ik they need 5 gallons but people INSIST on going small so I make them get at least a gallon. It actually is, my goldfish had lived for about 8 years now and it’s perfectly fine, I don’t clean it very often, I feed it every other day, and just leave it alone. He’s thriving in there, (mostly because goldfish are actually bottom feeders) and he doesn’t need that much attention. Every fish is different though so mine might just be Ironman.

Get a water filter, I look after my disabled neighbour's fish tank, and the most important thing I find, is to have the sponge water filter, clean it every 2 weeks, and add some little stones, that add good bacteria. I bought a little sachet, I put the black litte stones in it, squash them into the water filter compartment, next to the sponge. And occasionally I put real plants, so they can eat fresh greens. They are 5 years now, and look healthy. The sponge filter cleans the fish poo, it gets stuck in there, so as long as you clean it at least every 2 weeks, it'll be ok.

Very helpful and useful information!
But a couple notes
One, there are a couple clips of blood parrots, which are cichlids, not goldfish, but have a similar look
The other thing is that goldfish are social creatures and should be kept in at least a pair of trio, with around 20 to 30 gallons of water volume for each fish to help dilute their waste. A 40- or 55-gallon tank would be a good minimum for them
It's also worth noting that this *only* applies to fancy goldfish, those with rounded bodies and long fins, as common goldfish and other long-bodied types tend to do best in large outdoor ponds due to their larger size and activity level
Edit: Oh yeah, and here’s a bonus tip!
Goldfish have very high oxygen demands, so having an airstone to help oxygenate the tank will be a great benefit for them
Basically: Do a bit of research before impulse buying a fish and stuffing it into a tiny aquarium
Yeah
The first time I got fish, was a present from my mom and it was a tiger barb, but I only had a one gallon tank that my mom bought me too, thank you mom, anyways it died so we did so much more research, found a 20 gal tank on Kijiji with tons of supplies (water conditioner, bio support, test kits and so much more), tons of plants, a heater, auto feeder (I don’t use it because I love feeding my fish), a thermometer and tons of food for only 190 dollars (I paid for this one along with my younger brother).
Because of fish poop, algae multiplies substantially well and
alot of times, their waste is oxygen and protein.
Wow, we've got a real goldfish pro here. Fun to see some experts in videos like these.

Besides that, silk plants are easy to come by and a lot of tanks come with lids :). Trust me, I work in a pet store (NOT pet smart, f*ck them) and I know what I’m talking about. They’re soooo much easier than goldfish
@@mikennasmith No, the absolute minimum should be five gallons. Stop making people think they can dump a fish that needs a filter and heater into a cramped bowl.
@@notaseagull3320 I have NEVER condoned putting a betta in a cramped bowl, however company policies force my hand in certain situations. To all new fish owners I ALWAYS recommend appropriately sized tanks, filtration and heat. Trust me, if I could refuse sales to every person with a bowl, I could. But I can’t. So there
I used to have a pet goldfish who unfortunately passed away a few years ago. When we walked past him, he would follow us in his tank. He would swim fast and do little jumps. He always knew when it was time to feed him. Whenever my family and I would go on long trips I would take him with us because I didn't trust anyone to take care of him properly. I had him for 8 or 9 years. I love him very much and I miss him a lot.

Yes, I also happened to me... But I was so curious how much he live :-)) always little afraid of to see him dead next morning.
What about the cost of fish food, filtration system, heater, aquarium and possibly some decorations?
Jai Verma my father used to have an aquarium with a filter so we took it from that and we had a water bottle full of food from his old fish tank, so still the best 15 cents I ever spent

Can We Reach 1000 Subs
If you do it right and get into a set schedule it’s easy, but you do have a point. I personally have been in “The Fish Schedule” for four years now and once you get the hang of it it’s actually quite fun to take care of fish
Can We Reach 1000 Subs actually it is quite easy you just have to know how
I have a goldfish named Vanilla, her best friend Coco past away last year August. But Vanilla is still healthy and I take care of her a lot. I clean her tank 3 times a week. And feed her twice a day. We even have the same birthdays. She's been with me since Feb 15 2020 and she's still here. I want her to live as long as me. Love you Vanilla❤

How do people buy pets without knowing this?
Kids probably winning them at carnivals
@@prion42 :/
My friend won a carnival goldfish he put it in the carnivals bowl. I bought it from him and he lives in my ponf
@Joshua Nicholls Exactly. The problem with current system is that pets are seen as things/commodities and literally everyone can go into a shop and buy any pet they like. And it's not even monitored afterwards to see whether an animal gets proper care.
They're commoners. They cannot comprehend healthy living or science, let alone the needs of keeping another creature properly.

We had a bowl first. I begged my mom to buy me a tank since i loved my 2 fishies, i got it, i dint know i had to wait 2 months but i did my best.. at that time i only got a filter ... sadly these fish only lasted 5 months but that was because of another little fish that had desseases that my grantma brought into the tank as a gift. I still love you grantma ❤
Now i have 2 fish planning to get my 3rd today, literally im the only person who cares abt them in my entire family ( and grantma cares too but she cant like change the water etc) so its like a chore for me im not a vet or sum im just a 12 yr old trying to learn fishkeeping throught youtube since my local pet store knows less abt goldfish than i do for real 💀💀,but i begged my parents again and i got them new fishies a nice air stone, and a temperature thingy to check the temperature. Being the favorite kinda pays off but at what cost..?
youre doing the best you can!!
