Hi mate, yeah that is a bit of a concern to be honest. Decided to risk it for a biscuit though as I’m pretty certain it’s been blocked ever since I’ve lived here, which is a few years, plus nothing drains directly into it anyway. I am a little concerned about sand getting into it and potentially causing a problem though! I expected more people to comment on this, but you’re actually the first! Good spot though bro, and thanks for watching! 😊
Great build , what type of fish did you keep in there , goldfish can get quite big , looking for pond fish that stay small !! Any recommendations. Cheers Ged In Manchester Uk .
Great video 👍. Just about to upgrade my barrel pond to the 410 Laguna tank, so I'm going to follow this guide pretty much 100%! One question though - how do you go about something like a partial water change in a pond that size? (and how often would you recommend it?). Cheers!
Thank you! To do a water change I’ve got a bit of pond hosing that I put over one of the outlet pipes and drain the water out on to the garden. Then I just add water back using a watering can.. this also allows me to dechlorinate each watering can of water before adding it back into the pond! You probably could just add water straight from the hose into the pond though.. just remember to add a bit of dechlorinator. As for how often, that really depends on what you are stocking in the pond? Is it goldfish? Good luck with the upgrade!! 👍
Loving the content been looking in to creating my own pond in the middle of researching filters etc but this 410l tub looks about right for me. Is there anything you would change looking back at this build?
Hi there, I think I would have gone for a bigger filter with a clean-out valve. I think the plants in the filter struggle a bit because there’s not enough depth for good root growth. I am actually going to be doing an upgrade to the filtration on this pond soon, although the video won’t be out for a little bit yet. But yeah, Im planning to make the filter bigger and add a clean-out valve, similar to the filter I built for my DIY Patio Pond with Bog Filter. This is the video if your interested: ua-cam.com/video/oFc0oT5Zhks/v-deo.htmlsi=zElkVTrP_p6Lqd71 Saying that though, if I was planning on only keeping nano fish, like medaka and white clouds, I would leave it how it is, but it turns out medaka are illegal to keep outdoors here in the UK, so I want to upgrade the filtration to the point it can handle some goldfish instead. 😊
@@GingerFishyOfficial thanks for the link and reply I will check it out. Already watched all of the other vids on your bigger pond which looks great but a little big for my liking.
Cool. Thinking about doing something similar myself soon, however I am planning on doing so indoors. What did you use for the liner? I find it hard to trust most plastic containers.
Hi mate, you’ve got a couple of good points there. Flooding wise, you’d think it would, but I’ve not had any issues with this pond or my other pond that has been set up the same way for well over a year now. I know some people will drill a hole or 2 near the top of the pond to stop it from over filling, which I may do at some point, but to be honest I think if there was a massive down poor of torrential rain, a couple of small holes wouldn’t do much. I do cover the ponds in the winter though, which I suppose is the time it would most likely flood. As far as covering the drain, yeah, it probably wasn’t a good idea, although I’m hoping it will be alright as I’m pretty certain that drain has been blocked since I moved in around 10 years ago. Plus it’s hard to explain or show in the video, but how the drain is positioned, it’s a little higher so I don’t think too much sand could end up going down, but yeah it is a slight concern and you’re right, pebbles probably would be better. Live and learn though, and hopefully it will be alright! Thanks for watching! 😊
Yeah, the covering of the drain is a bit of concern 😬 I’m hoping it’ll be ok though as I’m pretty certain it’s been blocked since I moved in years ago anyway.. might try and add some guttering and a water butt at some point, which should help with any run off..
hey how does the insulation board work for you? In my state the freeze line is 3 ft or 1m. What about where you are how does the insulation boards work out for you in the winter. Is it enough w/ just a heater?
Yeah, the insulation worked well. In the winter I also add a polycarbonate lid, which I think makes a big difference. I didn’t plan on running a heater but after the bog froze solid, I added a 300W heater, attached to an inkbird thermostat, set to 5°c/ 41°f, which stopped it from freezing again, and that seemed to work well. I think our freeze line is about 0.5m here. 👍😊
You didn't explain where the extra part at the back came from. You just suddenly had extra depth there. Is it a four-sided frame or is it just the top and two sides? And is it attached to the rest of the decking, or is it just set in?
Do mean the frame that went around the top of the pond? That the filter sits on? If so, it’s a 4 sided frame, with an extra piece of length at the back.. so it would be wide enough to fit the filter on. And then, yeah, I screwed it to the rest of the decking to secure it all in place. 😊
Hi mate, i usually use Oase lights, in particular the Oase LunaAqua Classic LED. They’re not cheap, but seem to be good quality and I’ve never had any issues. I have also tried an Allpondsolutions (Sunsun) pond light, which was pretty good and a lot cheaper. I did also try a really cheap one from Amazon once, which really wasn’t very good.. Hope that helps bro, and thanks for watching! 😊
