Balcony patio container Pond for apartment condos

- In this video, I upgraded my smaller balcony patio planter pot to a bigger one using a storage tote container bin I got from Home Depot. It's about 27 gallons which is about 2x bigger in capacity than my previous pond. I have it stocked with minnows and a couple of comet goldfish. You don't need to have a large back yard to have a water garden. I'm also using a simple Hamburg matten filter setup which is just a thick block of foam with a pump to help circulate and filter the water.

Old Pond

These are better than aquariums, more sturdy.
Nice idea, i used mine for storing barbs and koi!
I love this! Very beautiful pond!! I really want an indoor pond and I just happened to stumble across this video and im so inspired to make my own now! Also I already knew most of the basics you taught in this video but I still really enjoyed hearing everything explained. You explain everything in a way that is really understandable and not overwhelming to a new fish keeper. Thank you (:
Nice video. You've got it pegged. Check out building your own wood frame pond, bigger and deeper if the balcony can hold it, and line it with pond liner vinyl. Very cheap. This project allows you to customize size, shape, depth, and have a more rustic look. Decorate the area and pond ledge with potted plants.
Responsable fish keeper!!
👍👍
Love that test tube holder, just found the files for it and gonna 3D print it soon!
Nice, getting mine ready for spring soon
Adding freshwater "plankton" and stronger rooting aquatic plants will remedy most of the problems listed here. I have 20+ assorted fish and 2 softshell turtles in a very similar setup. More plants, more plants, more plants.
I might have missed it in the video but it's definitely worth mentioning that the common goldfish will need upgrading to a proper pond of several hundred litres as they mature.
To Funny. I was viewing your video on the T8SG which I just purchased; I also am into aquariums and ponds in the yard. I also have tropical fish and breed Crystal Red Shrimp. Nice video :
+Ron Griese that's great. I also have shrimps, mostly cherry shrimps in my indoor aquarium with my betta and tetras. Thanks for watching, hopefully I can do more fish videos.
Nice. I did this last summer. Good idea doubling it up. I liked it so much that I made one in my basement with just one bin, has been going strong since august. Does bow out but so far no breaks in 10 mnths.
I'm doing one bin and it's bowing. Is it really possible for it to break?
@@tresjolieme81 anything is possible with plastic. So far it's been about year now but over time it could break or leak. Doubling it up would be safer.
@@cinnomingurl1 any more updates i have one bin and dont want water in my floor😅
Wow I can just let the water sit to make it safe
Hey just came across this video and I am now subbed. I like the way you stay composed, are illustrative and give sound reasons for the choices made. Keep up the good work. I also like the bamboo fountain head, very nice.Made or bought?
+mary beth Mabe thank you for your compliments. I purchased the bamboo fountain pump from Amazon.
I plan to do more fish videos in the spring and summer so stay tuned!
If you had ramshorn or malaysian trumpet snails, they wouldve done a good job of cleaning the substrate! Also the substrate is a good place for beenficial bacteria to grow. I have substrate and never clean it. My fish are fine!
Btw I love your setup!
+Manco Inca thanks for the advice. I may put some snails in the summer. Happy New year.
Can I use plecos as substitute for the snails?
If the water is warm enough, there is no reason why you can not use both. Malaysian snails will dig around in the substrate and lay eggs everyday. Plus they fall to the bottom when you do gravel siphoning. cleaning.
Another tip would be to insulate your pond to regulate the temperature swings. Rocks and gravel will store heat during the day and release it at night. If your heating the pond, this will keep the running cost down.
Yes, let your water stand for 2-3 days.
Water-conditioners are a waste of money.
This is good advice for your drinking water too.
Which plants survived the cold weather?
What plant are those what it name?
Thanks for the great info! In your first pond video it sounded like you had white cloud minnows, is there a reason you don’t have them any more?
+kimoose8 hi. Check out the follow up video. They didn't make it through the fall or winter. I'm not sure why but the other minnows we're fine. ua-cam.com/video/9UqQemquWg0/v-deo.html
Thanks for the reply! I have white clouds that I was going to put out this summer. Guess I might want to bring them in when it gets cold. I’ve had rosy reds and goldfish in the past and loved them both.
I like that and it looks great but couldn't you just buy a fish tank for in your apartment? Or even outside?
Hi, yes those are all possible options. I have a couple of tanks inside already but I wanted a pond setup for the patio. When I was younger in our old house, we had a pond made out of a large kiddie pool dug into the ground in the yard. One day, I hope I can get a "real" pond. Thanks for watching.
Wouldn’t the bin burst tho?
Do you cover it in the winter? Being relatively small it could freeze.
+MORLEY-NATOR I don't since it doesn't get too cold where I live. But in colder areas definitely cover or even bring them inside temporarily for The winter.
Twice a week? 😳😳😳I was feeding mine breakfast and dinner, heard to feed less so I’m doing once a day now. Skip a day here n there cus I heard to do this but I feel like they come up all excited 😢 is this the same for all fish? (Guppies)
If they made these clear with an even thicker frame they would never stay on the shelves
Hiii bro....how to install a Hamburg matten filter???pls another video for this....

What about stray cats
Curious how long this set up lasted you? Do you still have it running today ?
Yes I still have it in the balcony. Over 4 years now.
This isn't enough water for goldfish. They need large ponds or aquariums of at least 40 gallons for fancy goldfish.
Is the bamboo pump necessary?
Bamboo pumps is nice to have to keep water circuling . But a filter is a must. Filter holds the benecial bacteria
kenVersus thank you for the reply but another question I have to ask is, are there any substitutes I can use instead of the bamboo pump because mann they are a bit expensive in my case.
Sponge filter with air pump. They're pretty cheap
hii where I buy the pond like your
Home Depot
Does a balcony pond attract bugs?
Not my area since I'm in the city.
get a betta in there
Where are the snails?
The snails are there. I see a lot of egg sacks from them now in the summer.
Why are there empty pots in the pond? Lol
Can't u just add water from your other tank?
The beneficial bacteria is usually attached to rocks and filter media and not the water.
@@KenVersus oh 😅 I see
Substrate adds more surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize.
Substrate filter poop because good bacteria can live in it
Its gonna break. It won't b able to hold the water pressure
A plastic bin will break?
@@tresjolieme81 yup
@@LG-nh4bs even if the bins are double upped ?
Didn’t need any of that and all of my guppies and cherry shrimp are reproducing like crazy.
