    Sony a7Rii vs Sony a7Sii, which one do I use the most?
    I know I promised a Sony a7sii review a long time ago, already a lot of video comparisons between these two camera, but I have been using both for over 8 months now so I might have a different take on this and there is one camera I use more than the other, so I thought I would share.
    I'm not going to guess what camera you should get based on your shooting style since I am sure most have already decided to own one of them by now.
    Comparisons:
    Both have IBIS, both have the same weak but tiny battery, very similar color science (not the case for a7s original), both do not overheat now
    a7rii has a back-illuminated structure sensor that can only go up to 25k ISO for video mode
    The a7Rii works best in cropped mode for video, while the a7Sii works best in FF mode
    a7Sii is better in low light, but that is only when you get crazy high ISO like over 12,800
    But watch out when the a7s mark III comes out with the back-illuminated structure at 12mp that should be amazing!
    a7sii has slog2 and 3, while the a7rii only have slog2
    a7Sii has aliasing in full frame mode when shooting in 4k where as 1080/24p doesn't have any aliasing
    Slog2 starts at ISO 800 for the a7Rii while the a7Sii starts at ISO 1600
    A7Rii has 42MP great for stills like landscapes, a7sii 12MP
    a7Rii has much better AF-C since it has phase detection AF
    a7Sii has slog assist
    a7Sii you can shot for slow motion and playback in camera the slow motion, a7rii can't
    a7sii can shoot 120fps at 1080, the a7Rii 120fps at 720
    a7rii you can shoot 4k in aps-c mode, the a7sii can't
    a7sii it is easier to shoot 4k wider than than the a7rii
    both has bad rolling shutter
    Since the a7sii works best in FF mode, you will get more shallow DOF for shots like interviews
    I use Sony a7rii more for the following reasons:
    I have created a Sony a7Rii course and a Sony a7Sii course, both I have pixel peeped a ton because these courses take months to make!
    When I don't have control over the lighting and it's a high dynamic scene I shoot in slog2, the other times I am using a more linear creative style like Standard, I typically over expose slog by about 2 stops, well guess what happens, most of the time when I am shooting in Standard creative style with the correct exposure and then switch over to slog, the ISO jumps to 800 and the exposure is right where I need it, two stops too bright. With the a7sii it jumps to 1600 or 3200 and then requires downward exposure change, if you don't run and gun like I do this might not be a problem, but for me having to grab and ND filter when it jumps to 3200 is an issue.
    The a7Rii AF is better, I use the a7rii a lot on a gimbal with AF and it works a lot better than the a7sii
    I don't have to worry about moire when shooting at 4k.
    When I am shooting stills I do enjoy having 42MP for portraits or landscapes
    I mostly never shoot above 12,800 ISO both cameras have about the same noise below that.
    For interviews I use the a7rii for my wide shot in 4k crop mode and the a7sii for my close up at 1080 full frame mode, the a7rii will give me a nice detailed wide shot while the a7sii will give me nice shallow DOF on the close up.

    This video convinced me to get the A7Rii and I haven't looked back. Used it for 18 months now and I've never had moire issues. I've used a very wide variety of lenses on it and it works superbly with vintage glass but it lives with the Sony Zeiss 24-70mm which is insanely sharp, clean and auto focusses insanely fast. Just a big thank you, I'm loving this camera.
    I have yet to edit much as I've been avoiding Premiere but now I have DaVinci Resolve on Mac (it is buggy as hell on Windows) I'm happy as can be! :o)

    Dave, I respect your perspective, though my perspective is different. I just sold my A7S to get a second A7Sii, and not the A7Rii. Having two identical cameras is a real plus. I ALWAYS shoot in Log, and decide on log curves based on lighting conditions. SLog 2 expands details in highlights. Slog 3 expands details in shadows.Changing the gamma to Cine1-4 greatly reduces 8 bit banding, and allows the ISO to be dropped to as low as 200. While the A7Rii definitely has auto focusing advantages, it does not have SLog 3, 120 FPS HD, or a gorgeous full frame image. Of the 12 lenses I am fortunate enough to own, 9 of them are manual focus, with 6 being Carl Zeiss ZF.2's.There is nothing like follow focusing with a 7" HDR monitor that has focus peaking. I've never noticed aliasing yet on the A7S ii - knock on wood! My Ronin-M gimbal shots are just fine because the subject is always at the centre of the frame. The 12 MP A7Sii can produce full quality stills up to 11"x17", which is perfect for the Canon Pro 100 printer. I have yet to find a client who wanted larger pictures. Regardless, you have my respect.

      bro your short paragraph if very informative.. thanks for sharing... don't mind asking... I have been having trouble using the slog2 in day time... it seem I have (white) noise in the shadow and highlight.. .. wonder if you have any advice... thanks in advance

    • @LeonardUlrich
      @LeonardUlrich 7 років тому +5

      Sure! SLog 2 requires that you set your EV at +2 to hide white noise. For SLog 3, set your EV to +1.3, though SLog 3 is noisier in the shadows than Slog 2. Adjusting exposure levels in post helps. The Neat Video denoising tool works great. Type my name into UA-cam, then have a look at the detailed notes below the videos by clicking on the "show more" button called "Fisherheart" and "Nutimik Moonlight Sonata".

      Leonard Ulrich Definitely agree with you! I love my a7Sii. Full frame 4K has been nothing but gorgeous and 120 fps at 1080p is awesome. The stills I'm able to get as well have been fantastic and I'm not blowing up photos bigger than what you mentioned either. I love shooting at night and the low light performance on it is incredible. Would love to pick up an a7Rii though one of these days.

    Great video Dave, really clear and precise bringing up a lot of points people may have over looked myself included! In my head it was always a juxtaposition of uber high ISO nightvision and the extra resolution for stills. Im still not sure I could get around having a full frame camera that performs better in crop mode though... currently using an A6000 for video and photography I'm longing for that full frame lens ratio.

    Coool... Thanks for sharing. I watched your other video dealing with how to handle 4k in Premiere by just changing it to 1080 and then dragging to the timeline. The funny part is that I actually forgot to change the setting and just drug the 4k video to the timeline and then right clicked and selected scale to frame and I was able to export out in 1080 with no problems. I have not tried to export in 4k, but I would have to look into that again as I believe there was a plugin I was supposed to download. In either case, thanks for sharing.
    Whoops... I kinda got sidetracked, but the purpose of this post was really to ask any oddball question. I forgot the technical term, but I call it ghosting when a person is moving in the frame and it feels like a slow shadow is following them. Not sure if you would remember, but when your friend was walking down the street in the video comparison video that I am posting on, there was little to no ghosting. Was there a particular setting that you used?
    Quick background... Earlier in the year, I tried to shoot a modeling style fast-action posing photoshoot.... It did not go well. I prefer single shot mode, so I just figured that not switching to continuous shooting was the issue. About 2 weeks ago, I did a short running man challenge music video, the A7RII was ghosting non-stop. I figured that since I was shooting in 4k that I would have that issue. Although I read reviews that the A7RII is not very good for action, I did not think it would be that bad. So far, I have been wrong. I am hoping that it is just a setting.
    Also, I love the idea of shooting in 4k and I am trying to avoid switching to crop mode. Any ideas or any settings that you are using for fast action on the A7RII would be much appreciated.
    Are you using any particular settings for fast action whether for video or fashion photography?
    Note: I am loving my A7RII. I bought it for still photography and it has more than exceeded my expectations. I do own a z5u video camera that I normally use for video work, but I liked the idea of using the A7RII for smaller projects, but I have to fix the action issue.
    Thanks in advance for any ideas.
    Mark

    I hadn't seen any of your vids for a while, no particular reason but that of not having the time, but your quality has definately increased since last year. lovin it. I'm finally thinking of changing up my now very outdated gear, but really don't have the monies to do it, so gonna have to save a lot. hahahaha. I think I'll finally decide to buy a sony A series camera, although I'm coming from Nikon for photo and panasonic Cams for video, I have also begun shooting video with the Nikon (D7000) to be precise and I must admit it's not at all bad, especially using my old manual AE lenses. Love em to bits. But I think it's time to move on for video quality... Panasonic Vcams (AC130 + TM700) just won't cut it any longer. unfortunately. Althoug I'm not complaining, I got a good run for my monies on both cameras. Anyway enough ranting on, back to your vids, Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge and expertise, helps me keep up with what's going on in the world of video and photo. Also for introducing me to Matt's channel, awesome stuff. Gonna be binging on yours and Matt's for a bit.

    Question here.
    Dave Said:
    "Slog2 starts at ISO 800 for the a7Rii while the a7Sii starts at ISO 1600"
    Since this is the case for the starting ISO for for Slog2 for each camera,
    what does one do in the situation when (with the a7s ii for example) you
    start at 1600 ISO and its overexposing the highlights in the frame (highlights
    that you can't control)?
    Do you all just carry around an ND filter to ensure you're not blowing out the HLs?
    It's a bummer the a7s ii starts so darn high with its ISO.
    What do you do personally to keep from blowing out the HLs?
    Cheers.

    Howdy Dave, I just saw that you have a GH4 course. On your store page it says not to buy it if you have a GH3 or older camera, but what about a G7 shooter? Is there enough relevant material to make it worth a purchase? I know it won't apply when it comes to some of the settings like Master Pedestal or V-Log but they are fairly similar cameras.

  • @shiznuts
    @shiznuts 7 років тому

    I'm still with the GH4. As you're familiar with the GH4... would you say it's definitly worth for you personally tradining in the compactness, battery life and pricing of the system for the fullframe capability of the A7RII? I'm not sure myself. An A7 body is rather pricey and I'd like to keep things compact... using fullframe glass just isn't (or with plenty of native cheap options). I don't really mind the crop and reduced shallow depth of field of Micro Four Thirds that much... because you can work around it... what does kinda bother me is the lack of flexbility in sub-optimal lighting conditions (noise levels) and the so-so stills quality (that's why I shoot stills with the Nikon D5300). I wish there was something interesting APS-C wise, but there isn't really for me, so I'm hoping the GH5 or E-M1mkII offer any surprises... else I might just have to take the plunge and go A7RII, unless they decide to launch the A7RIII already, or a non-overheating reduced rolling shutter A6400 without color issues.

    Currently shooting on the Canon 5dmiii and looking at switching to the A7rii for 4K and photos. I mainly shoot photos, about 85% of the time. Should I get an adapter to use with my 24-105f4L lens and my Tamron 70-200 f2.8 lens or should I just look at completely going to native lenses on the Sony? Thanks for your video. This really helped me lock down the rii vs the sii.

  • @shaolin95
    @shaolin95 7 років тому +1

    OK the main issue with this video. When you say the A7Sii is better in high ISO....you are comparing 42MP vs 12MP. You need to be comparing at the same size for an apples to apples comparison. When you do that, they are comparable up to 51200 ISO which is a LOT higher than I would normally go.
    There are several tests showing this, for example the one by B&H. Go to 3:30 on this video to see it:
    ua-cam.com/video/n8pksExD_64/v-deo.html
    The only real reason to pick up the A7Sii over the A7Rii is if your absolute goal is to use for Video.

    Nice video, as always! You really emphasize the better performance of the a7R in terms of moiré, to the point you won't use the a7S in 4K for a sit-down interview. Is there such a big difference? I've seen other people comparing these two cameras (like "Michael the Maven" in his "5 things to know" video) and he says that both cameras produce moiré and perform similarly in that field... What do you think?

    • @DaveDugdaleColorado
      @DaveDugdaleColorado  7 років тому +1

      Like I said in the video there is only a very slight difference, I think most people have not noticed it, I have have been using both of these cameras for a long time so it took me a while to finally notice it.

      Dave Dugdale - Hmm... Ok. Just one more question: if I understood correctly, the a7S will only shoot 4k in FF mode, while the a7R is able to shoot 4k in both modes, but for some reason will perform better in crop mode. Is it wise to invest in a camera of this price to shoot aps-c when you could buy an a6300 or the new a6500 for that purpose and save a lot of cash?

    A7R II - This camera I really like for the photo. But you can still make films on it (as in the movements in the film, well, at the level of Blackmagica, you can achieve the same picture)? What lenses to consider? and yet about the lenses of the Xeen Cine lines that you know? ... Thank you!

    Hi Dave, I'm wondering why you choose to use the A7RII for your wide shots, and the A7SII for your tight shots for interviews. It seems counter-intuitive to me because of the crop on the R2, vs the full frame on the SII.

    • @DaCarnival
      @DaCarnival 7 років тому

      But it makes perfect sense to use your 4K camera for the wide shot (Dave doesn't seem to trust the 4K on the A7Sii) and use the 1080p camera on the close up (where being very sharp can even be detrimental). If you have the right wide angle lens, the crop is no issue.

    Hello from georgia, I have a slight problem and hopefully you can help me out with it.
    I am a film director and was waiting for the new Canon 5D Mark IV to come out. After it was released, I checked the features of the camera and read and watched some reviews, including yours, so I realized it is not exactly what I wanted and expected it to be. Therefore, I decided to buy Sony a7s II, Although I think Sony does not have such a variety of lenses and Zeiss Lens for Sony E Mount cost too expensive. So I decided I will buy the Zeiss Normal Lens for Canon Mount and use it with my Sony.
    Although the problem is:
    1. I Can not find a good adaptor, which in case of using auto focus, will not slow the autofocus. Do you by any chance know, what is the best adaptor I could find for it ?
    2. Do you know if the Adaptors leak any light ?
    3. I need the nd Fliter while using the s-L- Log , So can you recommend which of these adaptors with a Variable nd Fliter on the following links would be better ? Or is there any, you could recommend? Do you think it is better to buy variable Nd Filter separately and the adaptor Separately ?
    Adaptor links:

    Hey Dave, just curious on your opinion on this matter and I don't know if you have address this in another video before: don't you miss the colors that Canon gives vs Sony? I have a 6D and a Sony A6000. I really like the DR that Sony gives, but I keep falling back to the Canon just because I really enjoy the colors I get from it and I'm no colorist so it's not so easy to match Sony's colors to Canon's. I've been considering going FF on Sony but the image from Canon I enjoy it more.. anyway, I really enjoyed your video ;)

      I'm wanting to buy the A7Rii but that's what I have noticed with many still photos is that the color just seems noticeably better with cannon or even Nikon cameras when it comes to stills which has stopped me from making a purchase of either so far but I think I'm leaning to a canon just b/c video is not that important to me, they're basically just my personal family videos.

    QUESTION: How is the 4K crop mode of the a7 R II compared to the 4K 24p of the a6300 / a6500??? Also, how good is the image quality (both 4K video and stills) of the a7 R II if you use an APS-C lens on it? (Specifically, the Sony 10-18 OSS lens). I understand the stills will only be around 20mp or so with a crop sensor lens on it, but would the stills quality be the same as the a6300 / a6500 with the 10-18 lens on it, too?

    I think its just a personal thing you use the 7Rii most - because you do a lot of personal photography (which the 7Sii could easily do anyway).
    The 7Sii is a better videocamera. The S-Gamut3.cine gives much more pleasing colors then the traditional S-Gamut3 of the 7Rii.
    7Sii does lovely 120fps in clear 1080p. The 7Rii does ugly 720p = not usable in my mind.
    Beautiful Fullframe 4K as the only camera on the planet. And if you want more reach just use Clear Image Zoom.
    The problem with the 7Rii is the crop mode. To effectively use the 7Rii it you have to have two sets of glass: fullframe AND S35/APS-C. With the 7Sii you can invest in all fullframe glass.
    12mp is enough for a camera - i do professional photography. Do i want 20mp and have a oversampled image.. Sure! But 42mp. That is too much. I don't need it. I would have to print 10m high image and stand 1m from it to use it fully.
    So i still think the 7Sii as a videocamera is better. And the 7Rii is a better stillscamera.

  • @puddytat62
    @puddytat62 7 років тому

    Seeing as you are a photographer I can see why you would prefer the R2 vs S2 .. tons more detail in the still area. However if you automatically shoot the R2 video in APSC mode you are basically taking it to within 6 megapixels of the S2 . I would say the metabones adaptability is by far a more important attribute for the R2 .. If you are using Canon glass I would want some sort of maintenance of the auto focus features of the R2 rather than throwing those attributes away simply to use Canon glass. You published this close to a year ago... do you still primarily shoot video with the R2... That is really not the norm from what I can find here.

    Dave, what's your opinion on the color science in these cameras? In my experience it's not very accurate and the skin tones are always off or just plain ugly. I use a blackmagic cinema camera 2.5K, which is a lot more gradable. Sony tends to fall apart
