      Hi anyone outta there if you guys are planning to buy an A7RII you should buy dummy battery with a huge power bank (30000MaH) it is about 26 times longer than the regular Sony batteries, just put 3xpower bank inside your bags ❤

      I agree! Great quality. I would only say your image thumbnails are letting you down a bit :( I think the font you use and the colour looks a little bit unprofessional? If I had judged the video on that alone, I may not have checked your videos? Maybe you might want to take a few ques from how other established UA-camrs do their thumbnails and other editing/ filming decisions? But looking at this one, I can tell you do an amazing job! Keep up your good work, you are going to go far, man! 😊

    Great video, adressing all your cons as a A7r2 user since two years:
    - The noise is a non issue. ISO 6400 is my personal limit too, but: You will always have the 42MP in good and bad lighting, and they are fanstastic for noise reduction because of all the detail/MP. Above 6400, you can first denoise then resize the RAWs to 24MP and they will outperform the A7, to 12MP and outperform the A7s.
    - True. Tip: When shooting video, and you have a static scene, consider going into crop mode because it downsamples 5K readout to 4K.
    - I love!! the fact that the battery is small. I usually travel with two batteries for a day (and you should) but I only have to lift less weigth with my hands at any time. i don't "carry" unnecessary weigth with my arms. That's why I prefer it over the R3.
    The rest is something I fully agree with. But keep in mind you are getting a 42MP, 4K capable backlit 5 axis stabilized Full-Frame sensor for under 1k. A no brainer

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  3 роки тому +8

      Very good information, and thank you for sharing. I was unaware that in crop it oversampled from 5K. I will defiantly do some testing with that. Yeah batteries don't bother me either. I have big hands and the battery grip is a huge benefit for me. Two batteries in the grip last me most of the day for photos.

      Hi Malcolm, I asked you about buffering with the model Arii, but not wanting to take the risk, I bought a A7riii as Scott Schiller uses one on his slow scan digitizer. It is more expensive, but I have already invested a huge amount of money and time, it would be foolish to take a risk with the lesser model.

    Great review. I don't agree on low light noise being bad. I made comparisons with my A7ii and the A7Rii had less noise despite more megapixels on the same sensor area. When I resized the 42 MP raw to a 24 MP DNG RAW and it's waaays better than the A7ii. The A7Rii sensor is backlit (BSI) like the A7iii sensor whereas the A7ii is not.

    I just started to do paid work for realestate and I also sell prints of mostly landscapes. At $1300 new I grabbed a a7rII, I was a little hesitant due to its age, but I think it fits very well for my current needs. Considering I was using an old Canon T3i this is a HUGE upgrade for me. I was truly pushing that T3i to its limits and it managed to pump out some stunning photographs. Used Magic Lantern to greatly expand its capabilities over stock and streamline workflow. Though, my a7rII paired with my (just arrived) Sigma 14-24mm art lens should really expand my options and allow me to concentrate on the scene, not where I can place the tripod! Oh, real-estate jobs will take less time too!

    Very late to this video, but I appreciate the insight and I loved seeing your photo examples especially of the Milky Way. Ever since around 2019 I pretty much dreamed of getting my hands on an A7rII or III, but I had to put it on the backburner. Now I've been selling off some other camera gear to go towards one and I have my eyes set on the II. Even though this video in itself is old, I have no major issues with the older Sony screens/etc. The bodies themselves and lenses far outweigh that for me. Just watching this and hearing you talk about the IBIS has got me psyched up. As someone who is naturally very 'shaky' I've had lower success rates in the past with hitting focus on APS-C bodies that didn't have any stabilization. I can't wait to get my hands on one of these monsters. Great video!

    This is a great review. I have the a7s as my first full frame camera, several years before getting the a7r ii when I decided I wanted more resolution (Pixel cell phones are also 12mp, like a7s). I still have the a7s and plan to convert it to full spectrum, but it mostly sits unused. I was worried that hand held shooting would be difficult with the A7R II, as I'd heard horror stories about the A7R, but. IBIS makes it a breeze.
    I sometimes think about upgrading to the a7r III, but selling a camera is a bit of a hassle and then I'd have to get all new batteries and jettison the battery compatibility with the a7s. This and a few other videos I've seen comparing cameras across generations make me think the money would be better spent on a premium lens, as I currently use some nice legacy manual focus film lenses and the 28-70 OSS and a Rokinon 35/2.8 pancake.
    I will say that i think the a7s is a little more of a joy to shoot with. All metal, including the dials, unlike the A7R II, which has some plastic dials. The A7S is smaller and has greater manual focus magnification of 7x/14x vs 6x/12x for the A7R II. (why did Sony do this).

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  11 місяців тому

      Thanks for the comment, I love hearing others experiences with the cameras. I too stuggled with the idea of changing battery systems but after having an A7iii and just buying two extra batteries and a wall charger, I am no longer bothered by it. I wish they all used the same as it makes it easier, but the chargers and still much smaller for the mk2s.
      Eventually I will retire my A7Rii and buy a newer camera to replace it, the new ones are very nice, but I still don't see the benefit in image quality. Features yes, but at the end of the day I am mostly landscape with it and it works very well. Plus I always like using older tech then current, so does my wallet.
      Ive never seen a mk1 camera and did not know about the materials they used. This is interesting to me and would like to see one now.

    I've been doing Photography for only a year and when my nikon D3400 died on me, I upgraded to the A7RII which I got used for $1300. I absolutely love this body and I don't plan on replacing it anytime soon. I might pickup an A6000 so I can have a cheap backup that can shoot 11fps, but besides that this camera is more than I could ask for.

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  2 роки тому

      I personally have never used it purposely to take a photo. I have played with it and the problem I have with all the picture modes and panoramic is the camera only shoots them in JPEG. With todays post processing programs that automatically stitch photos into panoramas, it is better to just shoot RAW images of you pano and then have light room stitch it together. You get better detail and full control of the image with the edit. However it is nice still having these functions in camera for the simple fact of quickly sharing to social media. The camera easily connects to you smart phone for a transfer and you can then instantly upload them to the platform of your choice.
      As far as the Rii to A6400 debate goes. You cant go wrong with either one. Some things to keep in mind however.
      Do you already have Full Frame Lenses?
      Do you shoot active sports, fast moving, or rely heavily on autofocus? If so lean toward the A6400.
      If you shoot portrait, landscapes, night skies, or want maximum detail. Then the Rii is a better camera.
      In the hands the Rii is a "better camera" . Whereas the A6400 is an amazing tool that can handle everything the Rii can and do more, has way better autofocus and can shoot video a bit sharper with the 6k down scale to 4k. The Rii shoots full frame binned or 5k downscaled to 4k in super35 mode.
      Hope this helps and thanks for watching. I appreciate it!

      @MalcolmWalker  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you and glad the video was helpful. But I just double checked on the 1080 @ 120fps. The camera originally did not do 1080 @120fps and was advertised at 720P for 120fps. I have 4.01 firmware installed and just did a sample shot. If you right click the data file for the video and look at properties and then click details you will see the width/height of the file is 1280 X 720. As much as I wish it was true with the 4.01 firmware it still shoots 720P @120fps. I have the video about sensor cleaning in my plans, so subscribe so you don't miss that one. Thanks and happy shooting!

      I imagine the Canon RP will feature some newer technology and may have a more robust body as canons usually do.
      However if you want high resolution and a better built camera. (It still cost $3200 new back in the day.) Then hands down the Sony. If you are just starting into photography or full frame, the A7Rii would be a great choice if you are one of the shooters I mentioned in the video. If you want a camera that can compare to the Canon RP, look for the Sony A7iii. Lot newer tech and an amazing camera still, the price is around a 1200 new I think right now.

      I ended up selling my A6400 and got the A7iii (for video), I will say that the A7iii is a lot better in a lot of ways for photography and video. That being said I think the best thing about the A7iii for photography is the better auto focus system. The A7Rii struggles in certain conditions were as the A7iii grabs focus instantly. I think the A7Rii sensor & shutter are still better for general photography but if you like the auto focus of the A6400 then you will be disappointed by the A7Rii,
      Full frame is really nice for photography in my opinion. The A7Rii can be found for around $1000-$1200 bucks used. The A7iii is $1500-$1600 used. If you are looking at new cameras, then I think long term the A7iii is a better buy as the A7Rii has been discontinued.
      But my experience with the A7iii is nothing but positive, and I would probably recommend the A7iii for you, as you will feel like going backwards in tech with the A7Rii.

    I lusted after this camera when I was still limited to my LUMIX GH2 and GX7. When the price of the A7 came down, I bit. Full frame at last! And I loved the shots I got with my vintage Minolta primes. Fantastic landscapes. But these were mounted on a tripod. Finally, the A7RII started to come down from its "flagship" status and I was able to buy one new for around $1800. What a difference in hand held image quality with the Minoltas! The life cycle of these cameras astonishes me. What was once the flagship becomes faded glory. The GH2 was once a highly sought after camera. It was revolutionary. Way back when it had a fully articulated screen and an incredibly bright viewfinder. No camera ticks all the boxes. But I'll be satisfied with the A7RII for a long time.

      With aps-c lenses your pictures will
      Look the exact same. You will be shooting at 16Mp I think. The camera will default into aps-c mode. You can turn full frame on and you might get more visible frame that way with a heavy vignette. But it works with all emount glass until you can get a full frame lens. I would recommend the full frame nifty 50 that Sony has for around 200 bucks

    Malcolm,
    this takes great 1080 video. Why do you not think this is a video camera also? I would be taking a photos or videos to be published on UA-cam or my websites. I never use auto anything. In video, no auto. If you want focusing move the ring on the lens. People are really spoiled these days. 1080p is fine for the web. Who needs 120fps? Seriously!
    Also, I found this: Set your camera to RAW+jpeg, high iso NR to off. The write delay before you can hit "play" after your shot (if auto review is off) or "magnify" after your shot (if auto review is on) without seeing the dreaded "writing to memory card" message is then reduced from about 2-3 s if hi iso NR is on to less than half a second if high iso NR is off (fast card timings).
    Use a jpeg size of 11 or 18 mpix, and the magnifying delay to check focus is also gone as you hit "magnify" - 18 mpix is plenty enough to check focus on a 42MP shot.
    One of the single worst things about the A7Rm2 is how long it takes to review an image (zoom in) when you zoom in to verify its sharp. But this takes 3 to 5 seconds to perform.
    While experimenting I discovered a way to get round this annoyance. When you click the magnify button when reviewing pictures, it can can take anywhere between 3 to 5 seconds for the A7Rm2 to respond so as to check critical focus on photos. Its the worst when you're trying to be fast!
    The fix is to set your camera to RAW&JPEG and then set the Image size to "S: 11M" (Camera settings page 1)
    Now when you take a photo you will get the full 42mp RAW, but the camera now uses the Small Jpeg for the preview and there's virtually no delay!

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  2 роки тому

      Very useful information, thank you for committing. I did also later learn that if you shoot video in crop mode in 4k the camera will over sample from 5k too. But from what I read this only happens in crop (APS-C or super 36 mode ON) mode.

    • @jmoss99
      @jmoss99 2 роки тому +2

      This is the problem with these cameras. I can get a A7ii for $700 and a A7Rii for $900, but why? What happens when I go to edit the photos or the videos? I have not made up my mind yet.
      I think that people should worry about becoming better photographers then worry about gear. I mean, think about lighting! Think about the plot, the story. Go to the museum and look at the composition and lighting in the paintings of the old artists. AND NOW, I am getting caught up in this tech BS.

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  2 роки тому

      I agree that people should learn more about photography first before worrying about that camera they get. Not really sure what your question is about the A7ii vs the A7Rii but sounds like you have used both of them. I know for photos a don't need the 42MP over the 24MP for most of my work. But in regards to your comments about the speed that is a frustration it sounds like, So why are you trying to work so fast? I only ask because it brings up the point of which camera is best for your work flow. I don't believe the A7Rii is a fast camera in todays standards. That is why I think it is better suited for the photographer learning or the professional taking their time to get the perfect shot.
      That being said I think it is okay to geek out over the specs and models with all these fantastic cameras on the market. It's todays equivalent of "which film should you use" in your film camera. It is so easy to reproduce looks of film from a RAW image. The thing these new cameras give us to work with now instead of different grains or noise is the ability to get more information in an image so when we develop those images in post we can dictate exactly the mood we want to express or story we want to tell.
      This might be cheating a bit but I see it only as a path to learn better composition, because we are forced to examine our own images so much more than with film. We can modify and change the image easily opening our minds up to make better photographs and reach the ultimate goal of getting it right in camera the first time.
      The cameras technical ability also allows us focus more on our shot, our story, our composition then ever before because the technology in the camera is their to help us handle the technical stuff, leaving us with our ideas and stories to tell more then ever before.
      I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to express your feeling's on the subject. At the end of the day we each are given our own path to follow, and the only thing that really matters is how we feel about what we are doing for ourselves. Thank you and remember, in todays world the tech does matter and that is why we get wrapped up in it.
      All the best

    • @jmoss99

      I am considering buying one of them. I have never used either. I have spent a couple of weeks reading and watching videos on them. I am not new to photography or video. However, I am not a person to buy a car new off the lot either. I only use vintage lenses (like I would use vintage Neumann mics in the studio, for their color) and even with my 2000 PD150 DVCam I never liked AUTO anything in video. I shot or had people shoot my band from 1997 to 2007 as I was on stage. You can see these on my UA-cam channel. I had to deal with stage lighting. I white balanced before the show with a large white board in the stage lighting. Sometimes that lighting would change during the show. Then I would need to correct this as much as possible using CS2. I like using CS2 for creating or reinforcing a mood.
      So I am looking at what I will need these days where I will be making videos demo'ing my products. Other than that I will be creating photos. Photos not intended for billboards, but intended for the internet. I do not try to capture reality. I try to capture a feeling or tell a story. I do this in the recording studio too. Let me put it this way, I am not a DIRECT TO DISK person, but more a person who uses a recording studio to paint a picture like an oil painting. I currently use a Canon T7, but come from film cameras and film processing for photos going back to 1960. I am looking for a tool to help with that.
      That is my story.
