    Thanks Austin. You answered pretty much every question I had. I been doing corporate video for over 15 years and have had so many "Video Cameras" but I love how so many of these DSLR cameras are getting so video minded. I am a die hard Sony user and am looking for a backup/second camera. You helped me just make up my mind and finally go with the A7sII. Thanks and I sub to your channel!

    Great vid thanks, nailed it. Lack of foldable touch screen like the 70d or 80/d kills me. Its such a hard feature to leave behind, especially the touch to focus conveniences. Agreed though, 7sii is insane with low light video . Best I've ever seen. I want to be in the 80d - a7 price range. I have some thinking to do.. Thanks for the vid

    Just the kind of video I needed. simple, fast and with the information I was looking for. I would love to see a direct comparison from canon 5D and to SONY. I'm still doubting on which camera to buy. I'm familiar with 5D and like the look - but if I should invest in a either 5D, A7ii, A7Sii or A7Rii - I still don't know. I want to buy a used camera and my roof is $ 2,200 ( including lens(es) ) I need it to shoot smaller film projects, but also to photoshoots. what would you recommend.

    thanks for that overview, it helped! I have a sony a57 and am looking to upgrade for better low light video. However I need to be able to shoot at fps lower than 24 - I often use 15 and even 8. The a57 allows this but I need better low light performance. I would love to use a sony a7s because of its good video capabilities but cant see if it can do video at 15 fps or 8 fps...or whether there is another sony dslr that can do both low light and low fps?

    Hey great video man! I'm a Sony fan myself, I currently use the RX100 M4 mostly for it portability factor but would definitely consider upgrading to one of their full frame options in a heartbeat. Sony action cameras are pretty excellent as well, they're one of the only companies at the moment to offer full onboard stereo recording, which is actually quite decent and their built-in image stabilization is also why I prefer their action cameras for active video, like vlogging and sports.
    Keep up the great work man, a video/photo comparison between the 3 you mentioned might be a really cool video. Peace.

    Hi, very nice comparison.. i have canon 6D now and seriously thinking about switching to sony mirrorless.. i do mainly photography, landscape and portrait mainly. Looks like 7rii will be the good choice. Let me know your thought. However i have quite a few canon EF L lense which i really love. Which adapter will be able to use most of the autofocus features.. metabone or sigma mc11 or something else?

    • @austinpaz2174

      Sandip Ganguly I've had the best luck with the Metabones. I know people who have owned the Sigma and even though I've seen good reviews on it, they still had af and lens connection issues (not being able to change f stops and such). Might have just been a coincidence, but I have seen issues with the mc11

    Hi there! nice video as I am wondering which one of the two cameras actually - a7ii or a7rii - I'm gonna buy in the very next future. The questions I have are : Is the EVF different or same on both bodies ? AF speed seems to be better on the a7rii, compared to a7ii, can you confirm that ? Speaking about AF capabilities, is the difference kind a huge then or rather tiny ? What would you say ? By the way I'm essentially a landscape / architecture photographer. Some weddings too, from times to times. And more rarely, some portraits. That's it. No sport, no action, no street photography or so. Thank you for answering my questions and helping me in my future choice!

    • @TagTeamDream
      @TagTeamDream 7 років тому

      Emmanuel Luc-Streble the EVF is the same! The main difference In the cameras is the 4K video and the megapixels. The a7ii is 24 mp and the a7rii is 42mp. I use the a7ii and it has been able to do everything I need in land scape portrait and architecture. I just miss the 4K video

    Hey Austin, thanks for the comparison. I'm currently on Canon C-100 and looking to switch over to Sony. I've heard the battery life is really bad on the Sony is that still the case, or has it improved? Also for stabilization have you used it with a Ronin or is there another stabalizer that you use that works well with the A7SII or A7RII? I'm shooting a music video and want something that is great in low light, has smooth stabilization and perhaps auto focus. I don't usually use auto focus but in this shoot I will be moving a lot and don't think I can manually focus. I have a Metabones adapter for my canon lenses, does the auto focus still work as well? Or am I better off to rent some Sony lenses? I've never used Sony lenses before. thank you

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 7 років тому

      Hey! I was on the fence with the c-100 Mark II before I decided to get Sony Cameras. In my opinion, the only advantage of the c-100 (aside from the obviously better battery life) was that it had built in NDs. The battery life still kinda sucks. They only made the upgrade to better battery life in the A9 thats coming out but it doesnt have any video picture profiles like Slog or anything so unless they upgrade that, its not as ideal for video. I shoot a lot of wedding videos and I have 10 batteries between 3 Sony cameras that gets me through the day usually. Its a little annoying but the batteries are cheap and small so i just carry a couple in my pocket at a time and swap them out when needed. I use a CameTV Optimus gimbal and it works great with that as long as you use native sony glass since the adapters add weight. super stable footage when combined with the IBIS of the A7SII. All these gimbals are pretty much the same so anything like a ronin would work great as well. AF doesnt work that well with the canon lenses and adapters. The A7SII has continuous AF with video but its not the best. Since it uses only contrast detection AF its not as accurate as the phase detection AF in the A7RII which is wayyy better for video. If you are mostly shooting video though, youlll more than likely use MF most of the time anyway so its not going to be a HUGE deal breaker to keep some canon lenses around. I did that for about a year until I got mostly all sony glass.

    Very informative and thank you for the break down. I am at the transition of leaving my 5dMk2 and moving to either the the mk3 or 4 or even a used 1 dx.
    I have heard so much about the sony system but me biggest concern is my all my canon gear, lots of it including lenses. How well does the auto focus with the lenses, what lenses have you tried. I would eally appreciate some real world comments.
    Cheers

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 7 років тому

      so if you have the a7RII and the metabones adapter, canon lenses from 2006 and newer work pretty well. With the A7II it works well but not as good and with the A7SII it works but is pretty bad and i dont recommend it. I've the A7RII with the 16-35 2/8L II, Tamron 24-70 2.8, 100mm 2.8L, 70-200 2.8L and it works with all of those pretty well. I'd say it hits 90% of the time. If you shoot sports or wildlife, i wouldnt recommend it sicne its not as fast as the canons are with native lenses.

  • @justinferrara2098
    @justinferrara2098 7 років тому

    Great video Austin. I recently purchased the a7ii and use a metabones adapter with a Canon 24-70 2.8 L. Im having a very difficult time in low light. The AF is very disapointing. Is there a big difference in using Canon glass with an adapter compared to native Sony glass for the AF? Is there anything I might be doing wrong? Do you have focus settings you can suggest? Thanks!!

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 7 років тому

      Hey Justin. So the adpater works fairly well in good lighting conditions. It does struggle in low light but overall, I'd say the adapters are only 80-90% as accurate as using native sony glass. I didn't realize that until the first native sony lens I got then I saw a big difference. It was quicker and more accurate. I cant say exactly in low light since that all depends on how low light youre talking about but i would image it improving in dark conditions as well.

    I'm about to purchase my first mirrorless camera and I'm on a budget. My choice is sitting between the Sony a6300 and the a7II. I have found both brand new for a very similar price (75 bucks difference. Now I'm really confused, because I don´t know which one to pick. I'm interested in film and photo, but mainly on the photo side. I would like have a nice film option for family events and filming some skateboarding clips. the focus lies more on sports photography. Also I have tons of Nikkor lenses from the 70's which I will use with an adapter. Could you help me out? what would you pick? Is the a7II still worth the money (1100€ with a kit lens) in 2018?

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 6 років тому +1

      i would definitely go with the A7II. The only thing that the A6300 really has over the A7II is 4k recording and maybe a slightly better AF but I've used the A7II a bunch and that AF on that thing is still really really good. The full frame of the A7II is well worth the buy over the A6300. Also, in my opinion, the A6300 doesnt feel good in the hands. It has a weird form to it.

      not continuous but single focus eye AF with the A7ii.

    I only have one question, is there any noticeable difference between A7ii and A7sii regarding video quality on 1080p?
    Edit : Oh, I saw you answered that question a bit earlier "Since the A7SII has a 4k sensor, even when you shoot with it in 1080p, its way sharper than the A7II since its downsizing a 4K image to 1080". Thanks a lot !

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 7 років тому

      The A9 would only really be necessary if you needed the speed of the 20fps. Other than that, you would be just fine with the A7RII or A7II. If you were doing both photos and video though I would have to recommend the A7RII because of the better video resolution with its 4k sensor. hope this helps!

      the A7SII is the only one in my experience that didnt work well with AF with the adapters. the A7RII and A7II work well since they both use phase detection AF. I used a few canon lenses with 2 different adapters and most of my canon lenses works really well (mostly the newer lenses). my old 70-200 2.8 canon version 1 that ive had since 2004 worked surprisingly well. i just wouldnt expect anything crazy like super quick af for sports or in super low light situations.

      the IBIS and 169 phase detection AF points are well worth getting the A7II over the A7R which only has 25 contrast detection points. the phase detection AF is wayyyyy better in almost every way

    A7II: does it better in long exposures and is this body comparable with the canon 5DIII?

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 8 років тому

      +Lukas Voegelin i havent done much long exposure work yet with the a7rII, nothing more than 2-1 seconds but i havent had any problems with that at all. the a7II is probably most comparable to the 5dII. image quality is pretty similar but the sony has more AF points and options and is also has the built in stabilization so thats a huge advantage. its also half the price of the 5dIII

I don't know if I just made the biggest mistake ever or if it is not a really big issue. I have the Sony 16-35mm and the Sony 55mm 1.8 and I'm wondering if that can be fixed with those lenses and maybe with firmware updates. What do you think?

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 7 років тому

      lenses dont really fix moire and alliasing, thats more about the sensor than anything. ive noticed it too but it was never a deal breaker for me. I guess it all depends on what youre shooting. Ive seen it before but never felt like i shot myself in the foot by using these cameras still. Personally, miore never persuaded me to go with one camera over another. Overall image quality is way more important to me.

    Thank you for making this video, it was very helpful. Can you talk more about how well the focusing works with the EF metabone's adapter - particularly, whether the auto focusing is suitable for shooting events, like weddings? I'm so stuck on the fence on whether I should stick with Canon (heavily invested in Canon gear) or switch to a new system, like Sony. Please help!!

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 8 років тому

      +TetsusaigaDrgn As far as EF adapters, the Metabones is the only one I've used that works really well. The AF with the Metabones only works really well though on Sony cameras which use phase detectoin AF (A7RII, A7II). The AF sucks on the A7SII since it only has contrast detection AF. I would confidently shoot a wedding with either the A7RII or A7II with the Metabones adapter though, you would have no problem. However, there are a few more focusing options if you use native Sony E mount lenses. I havent had a chance to try any yet but i heard the eye detection AF works great and so does continuous AF while shooting video. Hope this helps, thanks for watching!

    Hey there! I have 1 question for you: s2 or r2 worth the money they cost? I feel like s2 with its old sensor and low resolution for photo is something like a rip off. Since Sony said that all they did for low light performance is new noise reduction algorithm. Thoughts ?

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 8 років тому

      +Sergey Egorkin i think theyre both worth the money. the S is a helpful tool if you do mostly video or just need low light functionality like wedding, concert or maybe astro photographers. the R is well worth the money since it rocks in photos and video. If you compare them to their equivalent nikon or canon (which there really isnt any proper comparison) theyre similar in price but have way more features

    How is the a7ii at low light? I shoot mostly portraits, high school sports team photos, candids, and product photography (mostly knives), but I've been wanting to expand my sports teams work in include some action/game play work. That would be a lot of low light work with very bad stadium lighting. Which brings up another issue. How is the auto focus on the a7ii?

    • @melaniechiriacescu7876

      Nathan Garza the low light isn’t bad you just have a problem with focus but it’s not bad in itself

    Which will be the best low light lenses for the cheaper camera like A7ii? For cinematic effect and also for studio photos. One more question please, I can not decide, which one to purchase: a6500 or a7ii

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 5 років тому

      if youre really on a budget, the Sony 50mm 1.8 is a good low light option.it depends if you were doing mostly photo or video to decide which camera i would recommend. overall I like the A7II more since its full frame but the video quality isn't as crisp as the a6500 since it shoots 4k.

    I am a photographer and i would change my Canon 5D mark iii for the sony A7 ii and i hesitate a bit (its more for photo use than video) should i go for it ?

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 6 років тому

      honestly, the 5D III and the A7II arent much different for photo. both have around the same MP, similar iso range, similar FPS. The A7II has more AF points but youre going more lateral than upward if you go from a 5D III to an A7II in my opinion. It would be more worth it to go to an A7RII for the high mega pixels or the A7RIII and A7III for all of their upgrades.

    I'm looking for a small camera that is great for fashion photography, cinematic film making, and vlogs. Also needs to have an external audio input. Must be able to shoot 24fps to 60fps. Right now I've been using my friends sony a6000 and so far i'm liking sony's cameras, mainly because of compact they are. What would you recommend?

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 7 років тому

      pretty much any of Sonys mirrorless cameras have what youre looking for, it just all depends on your budget at that point. the a6300 and a6500 are supposed to be amazing and have top notch video quality. In some ways better than their full framed A7 line. the a6000/7300/6500 line might be a bit better for vlogging too since theyre smaller cameras than the full framed ones

    • @mkazmi
      @mkazmi 7 років тому

      Austin Paz thanks for the help. I noticed that the a6000 line doesn't have a flip screen. Do you think a flip screen will be necessary for vlogging? I'm pretty much looking for an all around camera that isn't too big and that I can use for fashion and street photography, short films, skits, and vlogging. Of course the lens plays a big part as well.

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 7 років тому

      I've never done any vlogging myself but it seems that a flip screen definitely comes in handy for that. If youre using a super wide lens, it might not be as crucial but it all depends on what youre shooting. I know a lot of people are using the Sony RX100 lines for vloggins since its compact and has a flip screen so you may also want to look into that as well.

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 7 років тому

      dude i know. that was the hardest part of me switching to sony. I love canon glass too. the a7rII and a7II work pretty well with the metabones adapter for canon lenses newer than 2006. id say its about 90% as accurate as on a canon body. Probably not ideal for sports or wildlife but for casual shooting or portraits its def suitable. It bothered me more to just have an adapter on my camera since it made it bigger and bulkier so im still slowly making the transition to sony/zeiss lenses.

    Hey mate, thanks for the video - it's really helpful. I just have a question about low light photography. I struggle to take sharp portraits in low light with Nikon D3200 and I don't shoot videos, so should I go for RII?

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 7 років тому

      if low light is really youre main thing, then the a7sII is the one for you. if its only in certain cases where youre stuck shooting low light,then you should probably go with the RII. the RII still focuses really well in low light since it has phase detection AF which helps a lot copmared to the contrast detection in the SII.

    first of all, this is a very nice review, really helpful.
    well, at the moment i'm using Canon 60D and i'm planning to upgrade and also move to Sony..
    my needs are i'm using my camera mostly to take videos more than pictures. This will be my first time to use Sony camera, but i think i'll choose the Sony A7RII, what do you think about it?? i can use some input from you..:)

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 7 років тому

      the A7RII is mindblowing, especially compared to the 60D. When i first looked at the files on my computer, I felt like I struck gold with the A7RII, ha. the resolution is super sharp compared to my old 6D and definitely from a 60D. Its a little weird getting used to a new system but its well worth it in my opinion.

    if im switching from my canon 70D to sony and looking to get the sony A7 II should i just wait a bit longer and get the A7R II because i do photography and video alot ??

    • @austinpaz2174
      @austinpaz2174 7 років тому

      If you do both heavily, then yes i recommend getting the A7RII. Its superior in almost every way to the A7II but mostly for video would be the main reason i recommend the upgrade. The A7RIIs 4k sensor is wayyyyy sharper and cleaner than the A7II. Also, there is a rumor going around that the A7RIII is coming out soon. If you can, I'd say hold out a little bit longer and see if they do because that way the A7RII will be cheaper most likely.

    Just came across this video, Some up to date info ('23). I am a stills photographer and started with the A7S in '14 in Oct captured the lunar eclipse using a Canon Film lens using an adapter and was perfect. One thing to understand, back in the beginning '14 software was bad and expensive the joy then was Capture One cost $30 for Sony, today even Lr is magic. The A7s model is great for stills I went A7S because it did bracketing 5 @ 3EV (even today you will not find a program that can merge the images) 5 @ +/- 2EV is really great for sunsets/rise and blue hour for stars and dark sides of objects bright and detailed like driftwood. I got the A7R2 in '17 and with the IBIS I was able to Bracket 3 @ +/- 2EV hand held in Antelope Canyon while others were on sticks doing long exposures and at the Grand Canyon the same settings at night got the deep part and the stars on the south rim sidewalk one thing to understand NR turns off when bracketing so you get hot and dead pixels but are saved with merging they go away. The A7s did better than the A7Rii at night BUT the A7Rii can hold its own. there are apps that process in camera at sony playmemories apps www.playmemoriescameraapps.com/portal/ that make things easier like Digital Filter that will allow the capture of the Milky Way over a lit City but the site will close in 2025. I highly recommend any model and they will outperform most other brand even today,other brands just went mirrorless and are playing catch up you will not find. For a book on the models go to Brian Smith website to get a pdf or look on line for the books "You need a book to know Everything you can do". Just have fun!
