Rock will probably end up in the next few decades like jazz did in the 60s and 70s, it will chill out in popularity but it won’t go anywhere. People are acting like rock will just stop next year and there will be no more rock bands and all the old stuff will be wiped away, rock will always be around and have good releases coming out just like to this day there are great jazz albums coming out

    • @anthjmauro

The “death” of jazz was really beneficially to the genre. When styles like do-wop, rockabilly, and early rock n’ roll became more widespread, jazz became more experimental and, frankly, more interesting (looking at Giant Steps).
If rock has a similar renaissance, we’ll have a very interesting, experimental type of rock on our hands.

    • @jeremyhopkins37

Jazz went plenty of places in the 60s and 70s. Guys like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Getz/Gilberto, Charles Mingus, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, and so many more artists not only excelled in the styles of the past but kept the genre moving forwards. Although it wasn't necessarily in the main stream, jazz continued to excel in creativity and forward movement. It appears that every decade of jazz has adopted its own unique sound. The problem with most rock nowadays is that it doesn't seem to evolve much (although there are many many exceptions). All genres of music eventually fade from the mainstream and just like you said there will always be great music in every genre of music (along with the shitty cookie cutter garbage) its just about going out there and finding that good music!

    Now its in heaven.
Since rock music is no longer the zeitgeist, that means it has no allegiances, no more status quo live up to, no crowds to please, no checklist to fill out. Now that rock has freed itself from the chains of the charts, it can be whatever it wants to be.

@@ryanbollinger1759 Metallica arose from very respected cult metal act to the mainstream go to metal act, it kinda has special status among all the metal bands, so they are exception. I agree that there's bunch of metal audience in the underground tho, from oldschool sound to the newer djenty sound, but there's little innovation.
Legendary bands can sell out arenas (combined audience of old fans bringing new fans mostly, i.e. parents bringing their kids) but less famous great bands from the past really can't, and there are even slimmer chances of new bands achieving Metallica status, so once these legends all retire there probably won't be new acts selling out arenas. I know people will mention bands like Greta Van Fleet, but these bands are pretty much retro/tribute bands, they give almost nothing new to the genre and if they're able to sell out arena than it's pretty much only because of nostalgia or replication of certain moments from the past for those who haven't had the chance to experience it.

I genuinely think the future of rock music is in indie rock, as opposed to “classic” rock, it is a subgenre that encourages creativity and pulling from other genres, and with the way music is now published and with the ease of buying recording gear, literally anyone with a guitar and a DAW can make it.
Also if you look at music trends over time, things absolutely go in cycles. In the 80s pop music ruled the charts, then in the early 90s grunge and rock became popular, then rnb and hip hop took over in the late 90s, then rock in the form of nu metal and punk pop in the early 2000s etc

I've come to accept that rock and especially metal music will never gonna be as big as they were in the early 90's. And frankly Metal doesn't need the mainstream, it never did anyway, thanks to Bandcamp, Spotify and the internet in general Metal can have a wide reach and keep it's anti mainstream integrity, the audience is already there and Metalheads will always flock around the bands and artists, be it in metal festivals or bars.

nahh.if you check out schoolboys, few of them are metalheads now, because there is only underground activity. a lot of them are listening to rap crap because when you are young, you follow the current to be hip and enter some kind of community, and because the metal and rock community is going smaller over the years, fewer bands are formed. also a band wants 4 or five people. rap or techno, you can do it diy , and this form is easy nowadays via internet. it isnt like the 80s where you either go out or stay in your room and hit your head in the wall. times changed, so music.

a big reason why rock is "dead" (i'll be honest I used to think rock was dead until I heard the new daughters album) is because of how much higher there is of an entry point as opposed to rap. you got to get 3 other people, you have to buy thousands of dollars in instruments and amps, you have to practice a lot, to tour you have to carry all that equipment around, to record you have to go to a studio and spend hours making sure everything's miked - or you could pirate fl studio and buy a $50 Mic from Walmart. what sounds easier?

A lot of these previous rock bands are now using electronics and synthesized beats and are almost unrecognizable. There were Nirvana fans, and nirvana just happen to be a rock band. So, everybody made Nirvana sounding music. That music happen to be rock. Then it went back to rap, because people liked a certain huge project, and then everybody followed. Now we have hit the most diverse point. Where everybody is everywhere and pop is now focused on Drake, and Halsey. So, now we have pop rap, and emotional minor key pop music. Rock music is not going to come back, as much as a band will come and top the charts, and they will just happen to be a rock band.

I'm from Gen Z, and I know of plenty of people that listen to the good 'ol rock and roll days. Those songs and albums are gems of history and truly will never die.
You do know as long as there's a kid in his bedroom practicing with his guitar, listening to old records, that rock won't die right? It can't die. In fact, a lot of us have both Led Zeppelin, Kendrick Lamar, and Bach in one playlist.
These days we have the Internet and we now don't need the Billboards or record labels to determine what music we should or should not jam to. We don't need to have record labels to make music either as it can all be made in our houses.
The only thing that truly will die is large corporate centralizing of music. The record labels don't have as much leverage anymore.

i dont know why this is surprising. Many forms of pop music had a beginning and an end. Rock is just the next one.
    1. big bands/swing - was popular in the turn of the century through the 20s
    2. Crooners/big band - was sort of born out of swing bands with frank sinatra and the like and stayed popular through the 40s.
    3. Jazz - was sort of born out of the big band era during the On the Road beatnik hipster era whos prime ran out in the 50s
    4. The Blues followed and ran popular through the 50s.
    5. Rockabilly/early rock n roll was born out of the blues and reigned supreme in the 50s but gave way to rock in the 60s
    6. Rock - was born out of rock and roll and lasted all the way through the 90s. It lasted longer than the others because it had more media/technology sustaining it longer than the others but it too, just the precursors, has run its race as a primetime popular subcategory of pop music. All of these by the way still remain in one form or the other, theyre just not at their peak anymore, rock included.

I think rap, specifically trap and other similarly situated genres are so popular because they’re so easy for anyone who has a voice and a microphone to create.
You don’t actually have to have much talent or practice very hard to serviceably make a trap song. You can buy a beat off the internet, write a couple of simplistic verses around the same 4-5 themes as everyone else and a monotone chorus and you’re basically already there.
It’s incredibly simple and it doesn’t take much more any teen on the street with no money to get into.
Compare that to rock where you actually have to learn how to play an instrument competently or at least learn how to sing well enough to carry a song. You also have to learn the compositional elements necessary to create music in your genre. Rock bands don’t use downloaded beats and if you steal the same motifs as another band you might get sued. And oh yeah, if that isn’t hard enough, find 2-4 other people with the same idea as you that learned different instruments and also want to play music in the same genre.
I don’t think rap is unpopular now because it’s not creative or inventive. Almost every rock artist of the past 40 years has had more thematic and sonic variety than say a pretty good trap artist like City Morgue.
I think it’s unpopular because the creative young people who would have before put in the effort to learn an instrument well and learn how to write music have gravitated to the path of least resistance which is the homogenized soundcloud rap scene.

People think rock is dead because rap/hip-hop is now more widely listened to than rock by people age 40 or less. People still like rock, and rock is still widely listened to, it just isn't the *most* listened to. And obviously, rock music isn't exactly at it's best right now (and I don't exactly think rap is either).
Also, "rock" used to be a catch-all term for music that featured an electric guitar, or music that wasn't rap or blues. Even since just the 90s, we have so many more subsets of genres and so many more instruments that were born from the digital age that music that would have been considered "rock" 20-50 years ago is now considered something else.

@@1m2a3t4t5 Nah, it died because it didn't evolve fast enough in the 2010s. Rap today is very different from rap just 10 years ago, what with the preponderance of mumble rap and the emergence of 'emo rap'. It even looks vastly different. Nobody looked like 6ix9in in 2009. Rock today is mainly the same four things it was in 2009: jangly indie rock, metal music with cookie monster vocals, nostalgia trips for those in 'le wrong generation', and Coldplay sounding Brit-shit. And the rock 'stars' all look the same as they did 10 years ago as well. Either they're going for a 'vintage look', they're just blokes in shirts and jeans, or they're metal dudes in black clothes with long greasy hair and a band t-shirt. Compare that to how vastly different rock stars looked in 1958 vs 1968 or 1975 vs 1985.
Nu Metal's experimentation with hip hop helped to keep metal from going stale and falling out of the mainstream. It's embrace of the synthesizer in the late 80s (with acts like Ministry leading the way) was also a big part of the 90s boom. Metal was actually getting significant radio play in the late 90s and early 00s. Marilyn Manson was a legitimate 'rock star' making headline news every now and then, like Elvis did in the 50s, Bowie did in the 70s, etc.

Vatsala काली Jhaveri I agree with you man. Nice comment btw (and 6ix9ine is an overlooked metal icon imo lol).
But yeah in terms of evolution you listed it all out, as well as why the trajectory of what it all turned into wouldnt appeal to people on a large scale.
Its all inevitable when we list it out like that. For instance Nirvana sounded like shit to me when I first heard them around 2008 or so because it reminded me of the watered down version of it that it influenced on the radio prior. That was a time (2008) of emo bands, which is no wonder something like that wouldnt last either.
Perhaps rock is alive Through todays rock. I believe rock is mostly dead too, but so is hiphop. And a lot of the great rock of today is being released in the form of extreme metal (which I love) but is a niche that doesnt appeal to mainstream audiences, and theres probably too much of it, talented rock musicians of today have been interested in going into similar sounding extreme metal, forgettable/unnoticeable indie stuff, or in some cases emo infused soundcloud trap.
It is in my humble opinion that the rock icon of the moment is Ghostemane (while not in wide popularity perhaps) with Bones and even $B in that same vein. Sorry if this comment is a mess, I dont have time rn to type a concise reply.

Rock music doesn't have the huge widespread appeal anymore. In the 90's and some of the 00's there were certain bands that united people in a big way. Now you have all these niche bands playing to smaller audiences. That's all well and good if you want the more intimate experience but the huge arena filling bands are dying off and I think that kinda sucks for the next generation. Electronic music is just far more relevant these days.

Since then it's been artists imitating 70s bands. Nothing new or original. Got all this recording equipment, got all those wild new guitar effects pedals. Yet no ones pushing the boat and making anything definitively new.

A couple of new sounding songs are Caught Out In The Rain and Baby Shot Me Down both by Beth Hart and both sung at the Royal Albert Hall. I think Anthony is right about rock having to re invent itself, however I think that the music industry as a whole is in a terrible place from everyone stealing music, then eventually streaming. The revenue for recorded music is just not coming in, and the price of breaking in a new artist is very expensive for major labels. So they would only want to sign pop and country acts that make safe, familiar music so they can make their investment back. Rock is always changing and unpredictable-hard for a label to know if it will sell. So Major labels just avoid taking a financial risk in signing rock bands

We need another Van Halen type band that's young maybe some trap fusion on the drums wild guitar solos. That will convince young people to start bands and check out earlier rock music rather than Imagine Dragons or 5SOS or the soft stuff that we have now.
