Serious note: Major depressive disorder is a serious illness and is treatable.
Please tell a doctor if for 2 or more weeks you have felt down or depressed and have 5 of the following changes: changes in sleep; decreased interest in doing things you once enjoyed; guilt or self blame; decreased energy; problems concentrating; changes in appetite; feeling physically sluggish or slow; or a feeling that you might be better or dead or specific thoughts of suicide.
We often joke about depression, but its important to recognize that it doesn't have to be "normal" and it can be treated with therapy, medications, or preferably a combination of the two.
Joshua Earl Antidepressant medications are poison. They often increase suicidal thoughts and do far more harm than good. When US made antidepressants were introduced in Japan the already high suicide rate actually increased. Many mass shooters were taking them when they committed atrocities. I've heard numerous horror stories from people that used them and had bad experiences myself. It even says in many advertisements for them that they may make your symptoms worse. Although therapy is a good answer to this complex problem
It seems you have made up your mind on the matter. However, in case you haven't, here is a link to a meta-analysis that compares antidepressants to placebo (sugar pill) and how that impacts the lives of people with depression. These meta-analysis studies are a compilation of many trials and many patients in medical literature and allows us to show if results are consistent across many different populations and trial types. This particular trial looked at 522 trials with a total of 116,477 patients. This meta-analysis shows that antidepressants are absolutely helpful in reducing depression in most patients. This paper even highlights which drugs are the most effective and have the best tolerance.
www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(17)32802-7/fulltext
To address the increase in suicidal thoughts accompanied with antidepressants, this is a particular effect of the drug fluoxetine (Prozac) that was found in individuals aged 25 and under. The FDA extended this warning to all drugs in the class as a point of caution. This occurs at a rate of roughly 1%. This is why anyone of antidepressants should be followed by a doctor who can provide supportive care and switch or d/c agents when needed.
I appreciate you're response, however, it is not helpful to mislabel antidepressants as "poison" when they have been proven to help people with a condition that decreases quality of life and can lead to suicide. You might be holding someone back from getting the help they need and deserve.
@@jearl425 facts, it all depends in the person's intake of either therapy or pills. Mostly it's a combination.
Fuck that, they will just throw you in a mental health center for two or more weeks, and bill you up the ass if you don't have healthcare. And that shit doesn't even help.
Joshua Earl Statistics aside in the case of every single person I know who's used these drugs they say it's had a negative impact on their mental health. If it were truly +/- 1% I don't think that would be the case. I'm not saying it doesn't help some people it's just rolling the dice in a very serious matter. I'm aware of the statistics but there's a vested interest in keeping these pharma corps afloat because of the massive amount of money involved. Pharma studies also said that the risk of addiction for opiate drugs was minimal. You see how that turned out

That's a clever word play but I wonder if it's not a little bit insensitive to write that here.
I have clinical depression and when I had a therapist, she always told me to stop listening to sad music or music that I resonate with when I’m down. I don’t agree with her though. When I listened to Trippie Redd (I’m from Ohio so he was a “local artist” when he made sad shit) I found that it helped. I tend to pretend to be happy because my biggest fear is dying alone and I don’t want people to know that I struggle to wake up in the morning. If people knew about it, nobody would like me. My clinical depression is the reason I’m an extroverted entertaining person. But, that’s only when others are around. I have nobody to talk to. My therapist was like a robot. When I hear someone sing or rap about the same things I’m going through, it really fucking helps.
Dude I've been trying to put it into words but yeah, I feel like I constantly entertain people in order to not be alone. That said I have been speaking more openly about my mental issues and people were pretty understanding about it. Thanks for saying that though I'm glad I'm not alone.

People need to stop faking depression, its a real illness that people have. I don't have depression and won't act like I will, no need to act like you have it when others actually are medically diagnosed with it.
Yes! Finally someone says something about it!
Lol just be happy
He's asking because he doesn't understand. It's literally just a question not a shot at depressed people. Stop telling people they can't ask questions because they're "faking" or whatever
@Helios It shouldn't be a synonym for sadness though, because it takes away value from the illness. Because of people like you mixing it up, you have people going around (unknowingly) faking depression, and that's not ok.
@Helios Depression isn't a feeling. It's a mental illness. I just want to clarify that. When a person says they feel 'depressed', they feel what you described, but that isn't called depression.
My mood does not depend on the music I listen to, the music I listen to depends on my mood.
Well said. Toronto is cool. I know that's out of the 'blue', but I felt like saying it.

I honestly think that a lot of people are just very sad, distressed, or feeling existential dread. Cuz a lot of millennials have these feelings because of the state of our world and i get that but true depression is another thing. Its not sadness. Its like total emptiness. Its the most crushing nothingness you cant imagine. Like theres no warmth anywhere in the universe, no home, no comfort, nothing matters, and you dont even have the emotions to feel sad about it but you know you hate how it feels (or doesnt feel). It feels like what having no soul but still being alive would be like. Ive been there and glad im nowhere near that anymore but back then even my favorite song of all time was a jumble of meaningless sounds. I mean theres levels to the shit but if you havent felt that you havent felt the depths of depression.
I played I Don’t Like Shit 2000 times and it has had a major impact
White Iverson I don’t like shit, was one of those albums that helped me out of my depression, then put me back in it, cause I kept listening to it
Good or Bad ?
When I was entering high school I had what I think was the beginning of several hellish years spent in the deepest depths of my depression. The girl I liked didn’t want anything to do with me and all of my friends soon followed suit. I spent everyday that summer walking around a neighborhood across the street from mine (because I had grown bored of walking around mine) for hours until my feet hurt too much to walk any farther. Only then would I start home. During this time of complete isolation I found solace in very depressing music: Radiohead, Bright Eyes, Elliott Smith, etc, but not band quite reached me like Brand New- particularly the Devil and God album. From the opening lines of “Losing all my friends...” to the heartbreaking refrain of “I love you so much, but do me a favor, baby: don’t reply ‘cause I can dish it out, but I can’t take it.” It was incredibly comforting for me to know that at some point someone felt identically to me, and I genuinely believe that got me through a lot of those feelings. I hate to be one of those people who says “This band or this album saved my life” but I strongly believe that if Brand New or Bright Eyes never existed I would have attempted suicide many more times than I did.
I have Clinical Depression and albums like A Moon Shaped Pool (Most of RH's discography tbh) and Lost in The Dream have helped me and comforted me through dark times, and the themes of both of these records are heartbreak and the constant feeling of being lost. These records handle these subjects in their own unique way and, while they are heavy, they aren't sad for the sake of being sad, and you can feel it in the way they show vulnerability and a new-born feeling of optimism in some of the tracks. It almost feels like a friend giving you a hug, a warm one. So putting out content that deals with heavy issues can be done right and can have an amazing impact.
When it comes to exposing your truth in various mediums, I think it's very important to break away from these sort of toxic cycles one may establish while being mentally ill, such as making light of one's mental health and romanticizing suicide and sadness. This is key in the progress of talking about mental illness and its consequences on media, since it's appealing to a larger audience, some of them suffering from mental illness while other are just poorly informed on the matter, whatever it is that you have to say about it, they will absorb, and it can be in a good way or in a bad one.
I think music that raises awareness on mental illness and looks at it from a rather optimistic outlook (such as TØP's most recent LP) is good and much needed in a world where people are constantly demeaning towards themselves and their mental disorders via memes and other types of social media elements. Also, writing songs about said things can be very therapeutic not only to the writer but to the audience as well. Like you said, Anthony, it can make the listener feel less isolated, and understood, and that's brilliant, it really goes to show how powerful of a medium music really is.
The thing though is that if you want to bring light to such topics like suicide and depression, you have to treat it with the respect it deserves. Mental illness is not here to entertain you or to be romanticized, and it's fundamental to know this, and to understand the impact music can provoke when it doesn't handle these issues correctly.
To summarize, if you're writing about depression or suicide, show that you care about them, show that it's not because depressing shit sells, and be thoroughly respectful.
Definitely hit the nail on the head, I was thinking along the same lines. 'Depression' music is certainly beneficial in a way that relates to how you feel in the moment, but I agree that there might be a point of overindulgence. Depressing music might be good in the short term, but I feel that if you keep steadily listening to it, it's possible that the music could cultivate those negative feelings or even bring out some deeper lying issues within the person(whether that's good or bad is up to you). This could range to bringing about a depressive episode, lengthening an ongoing depressive episode, or even making your depressive symptoms more severe. Personally? I think most of the issues with depressing music would revolve around people who are already dealing with depression or going through a depressive episode. If it's episodic, it could certainly make a temporary situation seem even more hopeless than it already was.

I've always liked sad and abrasive music. It has personally always helped me through bullshit. Usually going through the musical catalog helps me find answers dug within myself that I need for a certain situation or struggle and uplift.
I'm not depressed because I listen to depressing music, I listen to depressing music because I'm clinically depressed. It's just what speaks to me personally when I'm experiencing a particularly low day. While it may not be very helpful for my emotional state, it's just a way to help me release those feelings when I don't know how to talk about them otherwise.
Layne McCallum i agree
It’s the same for me. To me depressive music doesn’t amplify my depression, it just helps me discern it and come to terms with it so I can work on fixing it. It’s kind of like watching a documentary about a 3rd world country before you actually go to a 3rd world country. It helps you have an outside perspective of what you are experiencing/about to experience.

Listening to Elliot Smith makes me happy
He’s got a lot of sweetness in his music.
Fabricio Rivera-Flores yes! I also listen to Elliot Smith when I’m trying to fall asleep lol. But his music is good all the time.
His singing voice is pure asmr to me.
When I was a senior in high school, I was super depressed. My mom had cancer (she's okay now,) I was working nearly full time hours while going to school, and I just felt super alone. When I discovered Elliot Smith, that helped a lot. I always think it's dramatic when people say that some artist "saved their life," but if any of them ever did that for me, Elliott Smith did.
However, when I went to college, I kept listening to him, and I think that actually made me feel worse. I just kept dwelling on my loneliness, when I would have been better off just not listening to it. So, in my experience, it's very situational. I'll always consider Elliot Smith a favorite, but I rarely listen to his music anymore, because it's not always healthy.
When I went through a breakup last summer, you know what I listened to? MCR. I know it's cheesy, but in that moment I resonated with the angst, but it's not actually all that sad of music. I tried listening to something sadder, but it only made me feel worse. So it's highly situational in my opinion.
elliott smith was my favorite artist for a couple years (and i do still really enjoy him every now and then) as he wrote wonderfully melancholy and catchy music. while i enjoyed his music and found some solace in it i believe it did eventually pull me into a dark place. i believe the brain to be a very powerful thing and it most certainly can be “rewired” if constantly subjected to a certain stimulus. while sad music can bring out negative emotions you have to fill the hole you made with positive thinking like “ah yea i can move on now it was nice to get that out”. but i listened to sad music to the point where this hole was filled back with sadness; it was in excess, it was all i knew because that’s how it painted the world for me when i listened to it so much. sad music can reinforce and bring rise to sad thoughts, there’s no doubt. doing that over and over for around three years rewired my brain to see negatively. i’m a good bit better now and don’t often listen to elliott or other sad music and when i do i often get sick and angry at it because i recognize how it eventually made me feel. i can’t say that the music is the CAUSE but it certainly kept me thinking poorly after a while. and it’s doubtless that constantly thinking you’re a piece of shit will make feel like a piece of shit until you start thinking differently. so yes, i believe that depressing music CAN actually make someone depressed if you have that kinda obsessive mind like me and wow that took a long time to say lmao

Depression is mental illness
You get sad for sometime by listening to depressing music
Depression and sadness are two different things
Coming from someone who went through a deep year long depression a while ago, I’d say the music has a real effect. Nowadays as a mentally stable person, I hate to listen to the songs I listened to in my depressive state, it makes me feel sick.
I believe that it can add to or (good god) “trigger” an episode of depression or anxiety when you already have the condition/s. When I listen to blues or folk I go down hill, at the same time I think i seek out those genres when already in that state without thinking.
If you do find yourself in a similar situation I whole heartedly suggest you seek out a mindfulness book, course or app so you can become more aware of why you are doing certain things and not let your unthinking mind lead you to a bad place. It honestly helps me more than anything else and gives me a sense of control over my emotions.

depressing music has made me feel like I’m not alone in this world, and often has the opposite effect where I remmeber that I am not alienated, there are people who struggle like me. lisyening to depressing music allows me express my emotions. I have a hard time talking about my emotions so listening to music is often an outlet for me so that I am not swimming in a sea of bottled emotions

Saying music makes you depressed is like saying video games make you violent
Yes music affects our perceptions.....and the red flannel be low key killing people
For me it definitely comforts me since it becomes relatable to the bouts of depression and suicidal thoughts. Making it seem like your not the only one drowning.
As a person with depression, listening to depressing music is one of the only ways I can process it. Trying to ignore it or avoid it just makes it color everything I do. Leaning into it, "wallowing" for the lack of a better word, is cathartic. I don't feel "happy" after listening to depressing music in that state, as I can't eliminate the illness, but I do feel more capable of handling life.
What depressing artists/bands do you listen to?
Joy Division, The Smiths, Radiohead and The Big 4 of Grunge are my go to for some good old Meloncholy..

The Cure, Radiohead, Brand New, Joy Division, okay fine yeah great depressed music, but Elliott Smith is really where it’s at
True. “King’s Crossing” is one of the saddest songs I know, to the point where I feel like it’s almost dangerous to listen to if you have chronic or manic depression
figure 8 is in my opinion one of the best albums of all time definitely my favorite
Imo Radiohead are only depressing in like 6 songs
Yeah but sleepy music makes me sleepy
Definitely get why one would think that but there is so much comfort in not only the fact that depressing music makes me feel less isolated, but leads me to admire the people who through completely different experiences than me were able to find the perfect words to express how we're both feeling even if they don't know it. It's so fucking cool. I definitely think there is an overdoing it which is why although I'd say emo music is among my top favorite kinds, I make sure to keep the variety going. But all in all I would say when I'm in the darkness and I'm seeking a common voice, I come out of the experience a much happier and healed person.
I'm a big fan of sort of using music almost as a guide through the "mindfulness" method of dealing with negative emotion. I think it's important to recognize and face the negative emotion before you try to get away from it, because that seems to me like repression.
I recognize these choices are super subjective but, speaking as a metalhead, if I'm feeling awful, I'm not going to put on Sithu Aye or something else really upbeat to just kind of ignore it. I will start with something really dark, like maybe The Body, Leviathan, or Meshuggah, and then move on to something a little more sort of... dark, but uplifting/validating? It's for that reason that I like to follow up with something like certain Neurosis, Isis, or Insomnium albums (which I perceive to have a sort of redemptive sound to a degree, depending on the album). I just follow the mood and think about things if I can improve them, and hopefully feel better eventually.
I mean I just looped Radiohead’s motion picture soundtrack for three hours last night and yeah I’d say it makes you pretty damn depressed

I personally agree with everything you said here. If you're feeling uncommonly low, introspection and dialogue are very effective solutions. I also do things I like and have to put some effort in, like videogames.
In my experience.. if I'm already feeling sad or depressed, then depression music kind flows with my current state of mind and kind of helps me get the emotion out. Yes it'll make the sadness stronger in the moment but it never lingers afterwards. And if I'm in a regular mood, a depressing song coming on won't change my mood.

What are the albums shown in the thumbnail??
I used to listen to instupendo, eden, & sad lofi beats months ago after a break up and i would wake up feeling empty because in my head the songs i would listen to would replay(i live for music) and then Brockhampton's Iridescence came out with that mixture of growth and healing(i.e.Weight,tape) i started working out to the album, starting my days off to the album. Bjorks touching peices i found helped me too. Music can do so much (at least for me.) Thats not to say a song like "better of dying" by lil peep would make me feel depressed. Better off makes me feel empowered. The tone through out that song showed me that you can own your chaotic emotions while keeping sturdy and hard(like the song- it went hard) w/out brushing the chaos off. Its hard to say whether music causes "depression" or not.
This has been on my mind lately, in the long run I do believe it affects you negatively. I've stopped listening to Mac Miller as much as I used to. And when I do I try to pay attention where my thoughts/emotions go afterwards. Depression creeps back up on ya slowly if you don't acknowledge habits that can empower it.
Best song for depressed people is Reborn from Kid Cudi and Kanye West

Hey Melon can you review Elizabeth Warren being Biracial?
It gives me an outlet, and stops me from having that release being reflected on others or myself
It's crazy because I'm currently writing my Psychology Bachelor's dissertation based upon this. What Anthony said about how intrinsicly complicated the issue is fits, there is no clear answer. But one's mood regulation strategies certainly do effect the relationship we have with music and our mental health, and just resorting to a 'no' answer due to how we through around the word 'depression' undermines the work people have put into looking at this relationship. The key word is the relationship, studies haven't found a causal effect between the two. The way our brain works shows it's highly difficult to find a cause and effect

@@sethstoll8525 no they're pretty much all the same tbh.
I only clicked because of Brand New tbh.
Me too.
It's never going to stop. Batter up.
Chris Ramirez Give me your best shot!!
Great video, it doesn’t induce it but it helps it grow.. I think listening to it can help you cope with it or make you feel worse it varies with every one I guess that’s what you have to find out on your own.
It's quite a confusing and paradoxical concept, because listening to sad music can, like you said, create a sense of relatability and has the power to relieve feelings of isolation, but could also act like a chemical depressant and have negative effects (Euphoric yet melancholic at the same time somehow). We know so little about the root causes of depression, whether it be a social phenomenon or physiological issue, and we also know so little about why music moves us emotionally. (Whether it's due to melody/harmony or lyrical context). For example listening to sad music is like watching a sad movie. As contradictory and ridiculous as it sounds, You chose to watch that movie for a reason. You enjoy being moved emotional in such a way. In away you enjoy being sad in a way. Just like listening to instrumental music that using typically 'sad' harmonic features, such as being in a minor key and having a slow tempo for example, can be beautiful.
depressed people listen to depressing music. not the other way around
Wouldn't the other way around be "depressing music listens to depressed people"?
What if you already are depressed?
Seek professional help and support from your loved ones.

@@In.New.York.I.Milly.Rock. What if professional help doesn't work and you don't want to talk to your family because they say seek Jesus?
@@goodgamesir1750 sometimes it is hard to find a professional that can properly help one individual. It is not uncommon to keep switching therapists (and maybe their approach or school of thought entirely) until you find one that works for you. As far as the family thing, friends can be loved ones. In some cases, even teachers. Religion can help some people deal with hardship, but no one should have to follow others' beliefs no matter what. There are also alternative support options that do seem to help some cases while not helping others - hotlines, online groups, etc. Depression sucks, but everyone deserves a shot at life without having to deal this mental illness; life's hard enough on its own.
@@In.New.York.I.Milly.Rock. What if you don't hvae friends? What if you spend your whole life with minimal connect with people because you can't talk to people like a normal person?
Black Sabbath said it best:
If someone else is suffering enough oh to write it down
When every single word makes sense
Then it's easier to have those songs around
The kick inside is in the line that finally gets to you
And it feels so good to hurt so bad
And suffer just enough to sing the blues
So turn 'em on, turn 'em on
Turn on those sad songs
When all hope is gone
Why don't you tune in and turn them on
When I feel down I listen to depressing music, I really couldn't listen to happy music when I feel like that.
And it might seem paradoxical, but I suppose listening to depressing/sad songs is somewhat a way to cope with it and feel better.
As I am writing this you're saying the same thing, cathartic that was the word I kept thinking about!
I really like Anthony’s answer here, self-awareness of your emotions is the key.
What I have personally found is that you become what you consume: as in what you eat, watch, listen to and the people you talk to. All these factors acting together massively impact your mental state.
When I was extremely depressed I found myself naturally draw to depressive music, and it acted almost as an amplifier for my depression. So, I don’t believe that depressive music will make you depressed, but it can definitely amplify and prolong your depression.
So, my best advice if you want to improve your mental health is, evaluate what you are consuming.
I hope this helped someone.

Why you gotta put an L over Lil peep you already killed the man 💀
Great timing. I am doing research on this topic rn.
I wanted you to finish with a "depression... forever"
But seriously, very good video. Clinical depression has more to do with an unstoppable numbness or "lack" of emotion. It's like the physical exhaustion that being "normaly" sad brings, but having it all the time. And that needs medical help, as any other disease. The depression in the sense most people use it, it more likely has to do with "having a shity life", and it gets better with changing habits, having goals, creating a porpouse for yourself.
Saying that depressing music makes you depressed is like saying sleepy music makes you sleepy its common opinion. Once again for fall behind the curve Fantano... SMH
Seeing the legend Elliott Smith next to Lil Peep is depressing if i do say so myself
Agreed
I liked em both, can’t compare them though, Peep never even got a chance to fulfill his potential, just turned 21. They also come from different times and genres 🤷🏻♂️
@@Dylanhs10 If you like peep thats ok but even at 17 Smith wrote much better songs than i think peep ever could have.
@@Dylanhs10 Also i'm comparing them because even though they are very different, peep is considered a god by most fans which is absolutely ridiculous imo. While most people dont even know who Smith is which is even more ridiculous
Peep only became a God when he died unfortunately. He wasn’t nearly as revered when he was alive and actually receive a lot of hate, still does. I think his fanbase had a rough time digesting his death and that’s why they became toxic. I wouldn’t argue against your point about Elliot being more musically talented, I’d just say Elliot was quality over quantity whilst Peep was the opposite. Peep only became famous when he died and that’s because of how he died and the proliferation of data through social media and streaming services. Unfortunately Elliot didn’t get the same coverage because he lived in a different time and he was much more low key. Elliot absolutely does deserve more recognition though for his talent, breath taking talent
One of my friends considers Imagine Dragons, Linkin Park and Nickelback as "depressing music"
Anthony thank you. This is one of the most helpful videos on the Fantano channel
Bryan is just in his feelings lmao
No, but Antnee's scalding review of AM makes me suicidal
Hey Anthony!
I love your videos.
Are you going to be making more It’s Food videos?! They were great imo.
Anthony.... as someone who’s battled it everyday since ‘13... thank you! Above all the trolling, you’re a genuine person. Much love. 🌟👍🏼
Feeling depressed over listening to something as shallow as lil peep says a lot about you.
This comment says alot about you

Back in my day 13 year olds would listen to My Chemical Romance, Aiden, Alesana, The Used and think that lol
Yes. You’re welcome

Very good video, my advice is if you're depressed is to listen to a variety of music. Don't cut out all depressing and sad music but don't only semerge yourself in it.
I find it helpful in knowing that I'm not alone dealing with this stuff.
What really made me depressed is when Fantano said that the package on Obama’s doorstep should’ve detonated. Enough is enough you alt right melon.
I got me that depression, and personally I find losing myself in that kind of music (especially with artists I can personally relate to) let's me kinda detach from the world for a bit, and when it's done I can kinda round out to general emotional numbness, from which I can navigate through my day. Maybe it's placebo at this point, but I find it the most effective way of getting through the hardcore episodes. I find making music even more effective, and tend to work an awful lot on my music almost all of the time because of it. It's all a nice consistent factor for me to lean on, half the time it's the sole thing I'm keeping myself alive for, but there's just enough for me to make, consume, and think about that it becomes pretty reliable.
i always used to listen to depressive music (not hip hop but other things) when i was severely depressed and honestly it just fueled my isolation and certainly didn't help at all.
No, but it can enhance it or ease it depending on where you are in the process and other times it makes no difference because depression is an umbrella term for various mental states so it's like asking wether or not a certain protest will better or worsen the general term "politics"
I actually completely agree with this. I think it's okay to listen to it cause it can help you feel less alone, but listening to it isn't gonna make you feel happier or less depressed. I think it's okay to listen if you limit how much you listen to. I went through some pretty dark periods in my life and I think the kind of music I listened to had a lot of influence with that. I think diversifying and mixing in something that puts you in a good mood or hopeful music is very important, not that it's bad to still have sad music mixed in too.
Spent a few years listening to a lot of depressive black metal, kinda, as he says, "drowned" myself in this atmosphere all of the time and stayed in the same depressed state even as my living conditions improved. Then I found this channel, branched out my musical tastes a lot, and I'm doing better now. I still really like the music, but it can require moderation and caution depending on the artist or song in question.
Anthony is the kind of guy I'd love to pick up some beer, find a chill place with some view and talk about life in general, especially MUSIC, after an exhausting day. Wish I had more people worth spending time with like you around me.
For me, I have clinical depression and I love depressing music. It kind of comforts me to know that I can relate to those feelings the artist was feeling. It’s a bit like a quick therapy session.
