Right now, Imagine Dragons are the biggest rock band on the planet. Even if you don’t consider them rock, you cannot avoid them. Imagine Dragons have consistently had a hit on the charts since their debut in 2012 -- meaning they haven’t left the public’s ears for six straight years. In fact they are the only artists to see four separate singles spend at least a year on the Billboard Hot 100.
Their single “Radioactive” still holds the record for the most total weeks spent on that chart. They hold more number one hits on the Billboard rock charts than any other artist before them and they’ve accumulated over 20 rock music awards and just as many nominations. While they have a massive, dedicated fanbase who fill arenas around the world, they are by no means the most critically acclaimed group. In fact their albums have consistently been panned by critics and have rock fans disputing over the band’s questionable presence on rock charts.
Like it or not, Imagine Dragons are the face of modern day rock - but how did we get here and what does that say about the current state of rock music?
-------------------------------
Are Imagine Dragons rock?
That's dependent on what you think. The band considers themselves "genreless." Some songs are more pop and others are more guitar driven. It really depends on the song. However because they standout against most pop music and are a band, they've generally been considered a rock band.
Did Imagine Dragons win a grammy?
Yes, their song Radioactive won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance.
Are Imagine Dragons from Las Vegas?
Yes, Dan Reynolds is from Las Vegas and it's where the band began taking off.
Are imagine dragons making a new album?
They just released their fourth album Origins on November 9, 2018.
How did Imagine Dragons start?
Dan Reynolds decided to start the band in 2008.

Actually they said they are a rock band, he combined electronic, pop and a little rap but they still a rock band. Their single Natural was described as his leading singer as a rock song.
@@renatovillatoro4746 Yeah natural is a rock song but he has openly said he considers themselves as a genreless band. Watch it yourself m.ua-cam.com/video/jlm3vz6pVRU/v-deo.html
And I think thats the point of this video, just because they make a few rock songs that doesn't make them entirely a rock band
Alan Castillo machine is another rock song of their new album. They said that but the thing is themselves have said they're rock. "Natural" features a "mix of explosive drums and inspiring lyrics", with "stadium-rocking instrumentation" over the chorus. And they described their song radioactive as rock/dubstep. What this means depends on what a person qualifies as rock music. If one’s definition of rock music is a bit more loose, then rock is evolving. If one’s definition of rock is a bit more ridged, it means that rock is dying out.
I personally fall into the latter category. It doesn’t mean that i think imagine dragons and bands like them are bad or not talented, I just don’t qualify them as rock
Honestly, I fall into both categories. Imagine Dragons are definitely not the definition of evolving and modern day rock. However, grandson is a *great* example of modern day rock.
There a bad rock band, but that is the thing about them there not a rock band *screams in tongues*
Here's the thing. Imagine Dragons are more of an Alt Pop/Rock band than a true rock band. However rock is not dead! Bands like Arctic Monkeys, Cage the Elephant, Foo Fighters, The Struts, Kaleo, and tons more are still putting out amazing rock music. Rock isn't dead, it's just continuing to change and evolve. While these bands aren't Led Zeppelin, neither was Nirvana. Rock will never stop changing, and rock will never die.
Royal Blood and Foo Fighters make good rock music...that said, I hate putting genres on everything. Even though it may not sound it, Arctic Monkey's new album (my favourite of the year) is maybe their most 'rock' yet, given the drive the instruments give to the music (especially guitars).
I think Rock is more importantly an attitude than a music genre, and that attitude is going nowhere
I think hating on Imagine Dragons for being called a "rock" band when they themselves don't define themselves as a rock band is pretty dumb. There was a recent interview with Dan where he basically just said that he makes what he wants to in the moment. Sometimes that's more hip hop influenced, rock influenced, edm influenced. It's just whatever they want to make. For me genres are becoming obsolete. Most bands are blending multiple genres to just make what they want anyways. It's getting too difficult to classify and I think that's awesome for paving the way for new sounds.
Also, isn't it interesting that when it comes to reviews music is the least cared about? With movies or video games people hold such a high regard for the reviews they get, but people seem to not really care when it comes to music. They just form their own opinion and enjoy what they want. (No, this doesn't apply to everyone. It's a general statement about a huge majority of people)
I agree with you in some respect, but when Imagine Dragons win awards that purists like the foo fighters are nominated for, I think that's where people get upset.
@@nedkuczmynda3782 Or when they won a grammy over Queens Of The Stone Age's amazing ... Like Clockwork album, which is one of the best rock albums of the 2010's.
I was thinking about your last comment for years. I was thinking asking a similar question like that to CKN or Antony F via email or something.
Music reviews get less views and sub's than movie, TV and Gaming channels. I remember reading this article from Metalsucks of all places about why there will be never be another Metallica and he mentioned that music doesn't matter much, especially metal and rock, you can even point this out to hip hop, jazz and actual indie pop.
"I’m sorry guys, it’s just the world we live in. It doesn’t. “Kids these days” have a million other ways to spend their time: Facebook, Instagram, video games, sex, drugs, etc. And, to be honest, it’s not just “kids” (I hate that expression when used by industry folk): it’s you and me, too. When was the last time you sat in front of your stereo (if you even have a proper one not in your car!) and listened to an album start to finish? Be honest. That time when you passed out to Dark Side of the Moon after your BBQ doesn’t count. Music has been relegated to background status now for all but a select few die-hards. It is no longer the main activity."
Not saying I agree (I kinda disagree tbh) but It kinda made me think and wish he can give a better explanation or something.
*claps*
Yeah, the genre Is the last thing we should care about. They suck no matter what gente they play
In my opinion, Imagine Dragons aren't a rock band. However, they're an excellent way to get introduced to rock. I remember hearing I'm So Sorry on a playlist and then checking them out. They got me deep into rock. Now, my favorite bands are Metallica and Death, and I never would have found them if it weren't for Imagine Dragons.
Im so sorry is their best song. If you dont call that rock, you might as well say that Lil Pump is jazz
Imagine dragons aren't rock band nor pop the are COOL BAND
That's actually pretty good point. They're like rock 101, only the theory
Interesting, because people say the same thing about nu metal, that it helped them get into heavier music
Who the fuck needs to be "introduced" to rock? It's not some underground genre that doesn't get enough attention because it doesn't exposure. You enjoy pretty much any form of entertainment that isn't directly music and it will have crossover where rock music will be played or used as a sample
I feel like Arctic Monkeys' 2013 album AM should get some more praise for being a really good rock album. The storytelling by Alex Turner, and the clear influenses from other genres, while still keeping it pure rock is awesome. You really feel like a true badass listening to it.
it's prolly the weakest arctic monkeys record

Spotify does't even classify Imagine Dragons as rock, in the top rock bands category they are nowhere to be found. Believe me, if Spotify considered them rock they'd definitely be there considering their size.
I imagine that has something to do with the fact that people going into the rock section of Spotify or searching for rock playlists are likely not just casual listeners and are there for very different bands than imagine dragons. I mean if the average rock fan listens to Led Zeppelin and the average music fan is more likely an imagine dragons fan, why show imagine dragons in the rock section if the people looking for rock probably don't like them?
imagine dragons is not a rock band, the band themselves say it in all the interviews but people and the press say that they are a rock band
Imagine Dragons can qualify as a branch of rock music(or at least some of their songs can) but they are by no means “the face” of rock music as a whole. Maybe mainstream rock, but they don’t represent the genre as a whole, and that’s coming from someone who’s favorite band is Imagine Dragons
you say that but some of their biggest hits ended up on the best of rock 2010's playlist, their new singles have ended up on the rock this playlist and multiple other rock playlists including pop rock playlists which is what I would classify them as. They are the most common pop rock act on spotify rock playlists by far.

Their music is absolute trash.
Imo ID is pop leaning pop rock. They do have a few rock songs such as I'm So Sorry, Thief, Dull Knives and even their platinum single Amsterdam. But besides those few songs most of their stuff is either pop rock or very poppy. I don't hate them though. They saved my life, how can I?
I've always thought they were dubstep/EDM. Nothing even remotely "rock" about them.
So, you're saying that modern popular music is Just an inconsistent slush of pop, rock, and hip hop.
That's a rather negative way of putting it... Not WRONG perse, but negative.
Pretty much. Foster the People's latest album Sacred Hearts Club is the best sounding example of that right now, in my opinion.

I think Muse (well maybe not their last album) pull off rock in this era incredibly well
Mister Anonymous Simulation Theory is also very rocky (Propaganda, Break it to me)
I agree. Muse has always embraced using technology as a tool to create new sounds. The old-school rock fan in me respects them for performing the music in real time with their hands and feet though. Sure their bass and guitars have touch pads on them, but watch them do a live show and you’ll see them use them in real time to make music. And their more traditional guitar sounds are beefy and of course Mat Bellamy is a virtuoso that can finger tap like a metal head and tremolo like a surf rocker and everything in between. They’re badass.

Like, I understand your point and I loved the video. But what is "boundary pushing" in any of Imagine Dragons' songs? For example, The Beatles blew up with an easy-going Rock, but what defined them as one of the best bands of all time is their amazing creativity and the revolution that they brought to multiple genres. Imagine Dragons is just doing what the industry wants. I think that's the problem many have with this band: their sound is too sanitized. Rock in its essence has to be counter culture to an extent. Their sound it's too flavourless, and that is perfect to radios. It doesn't bring anything new to the table and just helps with the homogenization of the mainstream music as a hole. And saying that people that criticise this type of music doesn't get, because it's not made for them, because it's for newer generations... it's too simplistic. I listen to a lot of electronic music, like Iglooghost, and I'm 20 years old, so I'm very part of this "new" generation. The problem it's really what the artist or the band is bringing to the table. And this is not fault of Imagine Dragons in any way. Kudos to them, they are killing on the charts. But I think music can be much much... much more.
fantano?
I liked your comment and proceeded to unlike it so that I could like it twice.
So true about the necessity of rock to be counter culture in one way or other.
Well put, I'm in the same category. Don't listen to much electronic music but I've heard some Oneohtrix Point Never and he seems to have a unique thing going on. I am okay with rock music evolving and mixing with electronic or pop or EDM or whatever they want to do cause I'll always have traditional rock to listen to when I want. But ID is not an evolution in any sense of the word.
Bruno César well saying they pander to the needs of the industry is kinda redundant as one could argue that any band that makes it to the mainstream is what the industry currently needs, by definition. The thing that is new with ID isn’t the style they play, in fact quite the opposite. What is new with them is that they are redefining the very idea of a genre, or more precisely the lack thereof, and they are exploring what you can bring to the table with that mindset. Are they the first band to mix genres? No, but they are the first band to mix this specific set of genres as successfully as they have.
I love how you viewed this objectively instead of just hating imagine dragons.
That's just how music is, its always evolving that's why new mixtures of styles appear like lorde - brought a new sound to pop
post malone - brought together different genres to make is own unique sound.
kendrick lamar - made a masterful fusion between jazz and hiphop witch became critically acclaimed.
Daaaaaamn that transition to advert was smooth! I'm actually impressed.

Imagine Dragons is not even CLOSE to being a rock group! They’re a freaking pop group! They're not even pop-rock with how they produce songs. But you very quickly changed my stance on that - this is what rock music has become in order to maintain its relevance right now. A very diluted version of what came before. uhm Coldplay are still the biggest modern day 'rock' band ,Imagine Dragons are just bigger in the US right now, but coldplay's influence , sales, tour attendances and worldwide popularity are lightyears ahead of Imagine dragons right now, imagine Dragons may be at their 4th album now (not good), but they are in no level as Coldplay, Linkin Park, Green Day etc.
Exactly, though Coldplay have an advantage as they have a longer history and catalog, though some of their older stuff (Viva la Vida) is more experimental than anything that Imagine Dragons has ever done.
@@gabrielrojas6877 exactly Imagine Dragons are becoming a one trick pony similar to Maroon 5 who rely on a few good songs on an album and the rest are pure filler.
Lol. Id is more rock than coldplay
coldplay is not even sound rock.
Bruh every band is good in their own way...
What an excellent treatise on the concept of rock! Well done!
This video was amazing.
This make me reconsider my opinions about rock or overall music.
Thank you so much❤️
I saw them on their night vision tour and they busted out guitar solos and even did a cover of Tom Sawyer. Which makes me more angry of how they sold out, I thought they might bring rock back in their future albums but instead they became another maroon 5
I thought Smoke and Mirrors was absolutely incredible and it still is one of my all time favourite albums. Evolve.... Who even knows. Major sell out point I guess.
@@evanrachwalski6721 I guess "sell out" is just a term people throw around towards bands they don't like now?
that's cute
Same I fucking loved Night Visions and Smoke and Mirrors and I'm so mad with what happened with Evolve and Origins. They're dead now :(
I hope they come back some day
I don't see why they should try to "bring rock back". They're having fun with what they do, playing around with their sound, and creating whatever the hell they want, while making a decent living out of it.. that's the dream man!
There is no room left for new rock sounds, music should be evolving.
I took my eldest son to his first concert this year. At 9yo, he got to see Imagine Dragons, his favourite band. Growing up as a fan if rock music, my first concert was Bon Jovi's 1987 tour for Slippery When Wet at 13yo. I've been a fan of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys and then Seventies' rock, through to Eighties glam rock before progressing to grunge. I listen to metal, hard rock, prog rock, punk, hardcore, whatever. Imagine Dragons were very much a rock band live. Sure they use elements of Hip Hop and EDM, but fundamentally, they are still a rock band in every sense of the word.

Twenty one Pilots isnt rock and is far from it, their first 4 albums were mostly techno/disco with rapping and the only "rock" element was the heavy drums. their fifth album added rock sounds but only in some songs.
Just because bands play live with guitars dosent mean they are rock
Most of the bands that you listed are far from rock and I dont agree with the original comment aswell
@@georgeb9991 This is your opinion, not a fact.
I love your Imagine Dragons video, please make a video of the importance of Linkin Park on the music industry, i think there aren't too many videos talking about that. 💕
There are still plenty of rock bands they just aren't as mainstream, which I think allows more experimenting with the genre.
Excellently written video essay on a topic that's fascinating to me. I adore the experimentation and "genre-less" movement we're going down. Even if I personally dislike ID's sound, their ideas and devotion to change is not only admirable to me, but welcomed
I would never categorize them as 'rock' they have always been more alternative to me with their mix of genres. I am not sure there recent albums are any good but radioactive was definitely something new and interesting.
I saw them on their evolve tour and not only are they great singers, but they pull you In with their amazing and perplex performances
Smooth operator with the sponsporship although the ending cut me off when you paused especially since you had the missed opportunity to say keep rocking.

"So it kind of makes sense that Imagine Dragons aren't beloved by the previous generation of rock fans and critics, BECAUSE IT'S NOT MEANT FOR THEM"
This is SO true! Imagine Dragons are a mix of various genres, not defined by labels and I love that about them. Their music is really powerful, not only the catchy rhythms, but the lyrics. And they're the 5th most listened artist on Spotify, so I think they must be doing something right

Whatever zone they belong in... They will always be my favourite. Imagine Dragons does say that the zone depends on the song. So, if they are rock or not. I love them more than anything.
You have the smoothest transitions to your ads. You don't even realize its happening.
I ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ imagine dragons and have since their first album!
Some of my favorite rock bands from this decade are Rare Americans, Cage the Elephant, Ken Aschorp, Mayday Parade, & Scratch 21
You should check out the album "You Won't Get What You Want" by Daughters. Its an experimental rock album and takes a while to digest. You may not like the first track but then it gets real good later.
*I really don't care what genre i'm listening to, as long as lyrics are telling some story or uplifting and music setting up stage for it.*
I'm gonna bring real rock back one day
Same here, my dream is to become a Rockstar
greta van fleet did, and they're being criticized for "copying zeppelin", so...
Traditional rock could be brought back if nostalgia plays a role. Go back to blues rock or 80s rock and you might have a winner
So what real rock is that?
Let’s do this 🤘🏼 🔥
I personally love their debut album which my friends give me weird looks for since I’m the hardcore classic rock fan.
Their debut album got me through a dark as hell time in my life and is potentially the reason I’m still alive.
Say what you will about them, that lyrics in that first album, when left up to the imagination, can make someone hopeful.
Absolutely love your channel. Thanks!
Not a fan of Imagine Dragons but props to them for doing what they want
I'm pretty sure they got their strings pulled, but hey at least they're rich.
They wanted to make money. That's about it.
@@gabrielbennett9376 They also wanted to help people struggling with depression and facing discrimination
Lol I actually knew them back when they recorded the Speak to Me EP. My uncle was an original member of the band. Its crazy seeing how far they have come since playing in my grandma’s basement! Growing up the Speak to Me EP was the Imagine Dragons I knew.
I think the issue is that, while Imagine Dragons (to me) isn't wholly rock and certainly more pop, them being as such is considered a bad thing; I feel a lot of people say that Imagine Dragons isn't rock because they're "not good". If the band was more critically acclaimed you'd see far more people calling them rock.
It's really weird to see Wayne Sermon in the context of a huge rock band. I didn't know him well, but I knew his sister and had seen him on occasion when we were in the same High School. You don't expect faces you knew in high school in a UA-cam video essay about a rock band.
That's actually amazing
I just wanted to say thank you for putting King Gizzard and The Lizard wizard on my radar, there probably my new favorite band. My current favorite albums would have to be -Flying Microtonal Banana and -I'm In Your Mind Fuzz.
You people need to realize that if you don't like something, that doesn't automatically mean you should burn it with fire. There is music I don't like as well, just let it exist. It's that simple.
True, except for The Chainsmokers. They should be burned in a fire...
That's like... exactly the opposite of what i said
@Cyberdemon Mike Still doesn't mean it shouldn't exist
Pepa Vašata It’s weird despite how simple of a concept this is, people still try to find a loophole to justify their biased hating
And then Måneskin arrived in 2021.
I’ll never forget what Damiano (Lead singer) said in the band’s acceptance speech as the winners of Eurovision Song Contest:
“Rock’n’roll never dies!”
Ps: I know the quote is from another artist but when Mpneskin said it at a pop competition it melted my heart
Maneskin are a farce and have no quality
3 years later, here we are with pop rock songs and artists (Olivia Rodrigo, Måneskin...) becoming popular again. Awesome~

I would defiently call ID a Pop Rock band. My biggest problem is that they are called an Alternative Rock, when they sound a lot closer to Pop Rock (aside from a few songs such as Warriors and Battle Cry). I would agree that they their first two releases had some Alternative influence but I think that they've always been a Pop Rock band first and foremost with other elements. Evolve and Origins are Pop Rock and Electropop, and they completely abandoned any Alternative Rock influence.
I agree about calling them pop rock. They were my gateway to rock and I still love them despite having moved on to heavier stuff.
Thank god parquet courts is shown at the end of this video! They deserve to be known especially with their newest album being the most accessible of their career and one of the their best.
