Jacob collier fans don’t make it better for him in the comments. They’re the same people that make music academics be outwardly hated by peers. As a music history grad, you guys are obnoxious as hell. This hoity toity “I’m better than you” attitude. Y’all talk about not insulting Collier, and then go and put down metal, punk, rap, and any other form of art that doesn’t come from an academic setting. Music theory and theoretical complexity only does not make good or even groundbreaking music. Look at Nirvana, The Clash, NWA, Mercedes Sosa, Ruben Blades. All insanely influential and important, none learned music theory or only learned it afterwards.

Same. It’s not even the fact that whether the listener is a musician or not. I guess they need to pull back on experimentation.
A fun fact is that Paul McCartney struggled with this early post Beatles.
Harrison being the “ Feel” in the Beatles had the most successful post beatle album. Despite him being very articulate in jazz music. He knew when to pull back. McCartney later did also.
Mozart being the prodigy and genius he was knew when to pull back. Of course also knew when to impress musicians.

Like yea he has a talent for harmonization and going in between the usual note scales, and he clearly practiced a LOT of instruments to a high degree, but that's it. And that talent is completely wasted in his music. His singing is terrible, his original music is tame and without emotion/texture, he refuses to understand the concept of "less is more", and he completely butchers songs he does covers of.

Nah man, you're just saying what many are afraid to say. You can be musically "talented" and know all the music theory you want, but Jacob Collier really is the epitome of making music complicated for the sake of making it complicated. And the worst part is that his audience is just a bunch of circle jerking praises for how much of a genius he is. Is he incredibly talented? Undeniable. The guy is gifted. Does he make objectively good music? No. It really is just complicated sounds that attract a holier than thou audience that just enjoys feeling smart because they "understand" his music, or because it's written by a "genius" so it must be good.

I think you just have to see it from different stand points. like for me, I dont like all of the album ngl, but it doesnt mean all of jacobs songs are bad. Bridge over troubled water is definetly the best song in the album but for a different reason to what other people may think. that song isnt your standard everyday, popular song but I like it because of the richness in harmonies. I love me some spicy harmony and that song has loads of it. for me tbh, I think jacob does alot better when he's in a song which he doesnt take the lead role like in Stormzy's album This is what I mean, Jacob collier is involved in every song on the album. and in Give it to the water on the album, he takes a back seat and does the backing vocals which i think sounds amazing for the song. or let alone, in sampha's plea, he plays the piano for the song, which also sounds amazing.
overall, Id say he does a good job with music, some of his solo stuff may need a bit of work but when he works with other people it deffo improves a song. also all the artist which have worked with him have said that he's not like anything else since he's so creative. he literally has his own guitar that he thought of himself to make it easier for him to learn lmao

“No flavor in Summer Rain” whew that’s a crushing take. As a big fan of Jacob I agree that much of his music is saturated with a LOT of music theory, complex harmony and it’s a lot to take in. But Logan, you be sayin that songs on Djesse 4 are boring, and also saying they’re way too much and that they’re boring at the same time, totally contradictory. Plus you make no distinction between his songs that are relatively simplistic, what you seem to prefer, over his overstimulating mess of songs. Plus you skipped through Bridge over troubled water saying it’s directionless, fam that’s the most intricately structured song in the album and definitely the most critically acclaimed by choral teachers and instructors.
Tbh you’re more of a hater than a critic. Doesn’t seem like you want to understand deeply why you hate it, just want to call it trash immediately

It’s the pretentiousness of higher music academia, where anyone outside of it and their knowledge and tastes are looked down on. It’s this weird idea that music theory savantness makes good music. Being a savant in an art form does not necessarily make one engaging. I like it tho, i knew that the following albums, the evolution throughout all the Djesses would arrive to the sound we hear in this album, it is as if it was written since "in my room". Because is music is evolving, he is experimenting more and more, and yeah, it doesn't resonate at all with me but i think we can totally agree that Jacob Collier shows us once again that he is SO polyvalent in music in general.

Complaining about the lack of texture with such a variety of music. Complaining that the music doesn't go anywhere, whilst skipping through the songs. It's all a bit silly.
Of course Collier doesn't have to be anyone's cup of tea. It seems the guy stopped caring about the peoples opinion a long time ago (crocs or bare feet, ugh). He sings in a slightly weird fashion (very pure notes, no vibrato, even though he can actually sing-sing), he prefers just intonation over equal temperament (which sounds a bit alien, because we're so used to equal temperament), he has custom five-strings guitars (which sound a bit alien, because we're used to six strings in standard tuning).
So there is enough to learn to appreciate. Or not, the world will keep on revolving no matter your opinion.

Jacob Collier is a bit like black coffee in a world of sugary drinks. The first sip isn't particularly pleasant, but it does something enjoyable to your heart. Collier tugs at my heart strings like very, very few artists can.
Now, I'm not enough of a musician to grasp how he's breaking the rules, but when I notice something weird, Jacob probably has mentioned this in one of his song-rundowns. This willingness to teach and explain, takes away so much pretentiousness.

Random complex beat and instrument changes don't do anything for me emotionally regardless of how talented you have to be to pull it off. Like genuinely idk what experiences someone might have that they could relate to in Jacob's music. A song I cry to for example is father time by Kendrick Lamar because of the themes he touches on. Auntie diaries also does it for a lot of people because they can relate to what he says and emotionally connect to him through it. I just can't say there's a single Jacob song that touches on relatable and emotionally provoking subjects. @@JezChristopher I completely disagree with the notion that the review was 'gratuitously negative'. If someone produces a mediocre product, it's a critics literal job to inform them. If you want my thoughts, then I'd say that Jacob Collier is probably the most frustrating musician I've even known. How does someone with so much objective talent make such bland, boring, corporate-friendly advert music? I don't understand it. Jacob comes across as extremely arrogant and self-indulgent, somebody who cares more about proving his greatness than actually producing anything great. His songs completely lack soul and sound like they were written by an AI. He seems to believe that the more complicated and technically impressive a song is, the better it is. The songs on this album which discuss love/relationships read as if they were written by someone who has never been in love before; someone whose idea of love comes exclusively from TV. Point is, I understand and accept that Jacob Collier is, objectively and factually, a musical genius likely on the same level as Mozart. I've also never heard a single song by him which I enjoyed.

The point here is that Jacob doesn't try "not to sound corny or weird", he is an experimental composer who LOVES to eff around with harmonies. That's why most of his songs DO sound corny or weird, he is not constrained by sounding cool. Even in experimental music you can find beauty, but obviously it's a very niche audience. Not for everyone.
Even I get bored at times from his tomfoolery, but he has moments of maximum musical brilliance too, and it's in those very weird, overblown production gimmicks he does that you can find it with enough patience.
If anything, think of guys like him or Mononeon as the mad scientists of music that enable for other more mainstream artists to incorporate exotic musical elements in their stuff.

I'm not gonna watch this whole video but there is absolutely something that needs to be said about Collier. In my opinion, it's his endless need for maximalism: trying to fit the world-in-a-box in every song, and jackin off to how complicated his mixes are.
He put out one good album and then jumped straight into "hey guys, I'm doing four concept albums back to back to back for the next five years," instead of letting us get to know him better through his songwriting. If he DOESN'T strip way down after this, I will tune out and lose some respect for him. Too many cooks spoil the broth and Jake is addicted to every spice in the cabinet-often his cooking tastes bad. His best work are usually his ballads cause he can't thrust his every whim onto them, they need emotional restraint.
Also, there is the enormous cheese-factor... when he tries to slap flimsy Trap samples onto tracks it sounds so lame and forced. He is absolutely capable of not dialing it in, but then he emblazons his tracks with ephemeral references like "wiggle, wiggle, wiggle." It's so cringeworthy.
He needs to mature as an artist because nobody can point to a single song of his and say "that changed my life." He's proven everything there is to prove except for that. His Grammys are all for arrangements for covers he's done while his originals lack growth. He's got to take songwriting way more seriously. Restraint, Jacob... Djessus.

You say that nobody can point to a single song that he's made and say that it's left a profound impact, but that's a very clear bias imo, at least based on his fans comments. It's fair to state your own opinion, but it's presumptuous to speak on behalf of everyone else.
Between Jacob Collier, and Louis Cole, I personally lean more towards the latters style of Jazz Fusion, in stuff like his latest Knower album, because it's just a bit more restrained, in a rather subtle way. Though maybe it's also just a taste thing. Using food as an analogy in the way you use spices, he does use a very, very rich palette in his dense song structure. Sort of like the cookie dough I once tasted in Liverpool; really sweet, to the point where it can be a bit too much for the tastebuds. Or another way of looking at it is Death Metal; I wouldn't buy a DM album expecting to really resonate much with it, because the musical components it's leaning into doesn't do much for me, in the same way not everyone likes having a thousand huge manic chord progressions stuffed into one track. But it clearly has its audience.
Honestly it seems like rather a curse to be considered things like the next mozart, or an unrivaled genius, at least partially because it makes people thrice as cynical towards your efforts. Not pointing at yourself when I say that, but it's definitely something I've observed in places. I find it hard to lose any respect for someone who's goals and efforts are focused on musical exploration, regardless of whether it vibes with me or not.

He can pursue whatever he wants, but the feeling from this comment section (not you, just in general) that any criticism of him is automatically wrong just because he knows a lot about music theory is beyond weird to me. I will lose respect for him if he doesn't take songwriting seriously because he is undoubtedly an unproven talent in that regard, and the Djesse project has more than worn its welcome. He needs to pivot if he wants a long career, I guarantee Herbie and Quincy would tell him so. Take one of his favorite artists: how many Stevie Wonder hits do we all know? Too many.
Now, of course, the streaming era is a hell-world of its own making, the old music industry is completely dead and the youth now barely remember how things used to be. I won't get into that much (genres used to be diverse and only sometimes cross-pollenate, not *devour* each other to death) but the key is that there's no simple way to assess his success, as "streams" aren't enough and he's not really on the radio, nor is record sales a reliable metric anymore. So all I have to go by is whether or not most people know any Jacob Collier songs and the answer is a resounding no-industry limbo notwithstanding. If he's going to continue in pop, he needs to write some pop.
There is absolutely a ton of space for maximalism *within* minimalism too; he doesn't need to abandon all the fluff he does, he just needs to reign it in and make it work on a smaller scale or in different areas. There are tons of unique talents who've done this: Bobby Mcferrin, Al Jarreau, Steely Dan, Michael McDonald, etc.
Jacob is currently residing in the ultimate version of "jack of all trades, master of none" territory, and he admits as much. I really do think he will focus on songwriting next. If I had to call my annoyance anything, I'd call it "look-what-I-can-do fatigue." While I might enjoy all the disparate elements he uses on their own, I don't often enjoy them together, and I don't think it's just a taste thing. (I could be much more harsh about it but it's an anger that comes from wanting the guy to have a career, not a gimmick.) I think the public would agree were there a way to assess that.
Louis Cole is the opposite. Not only do we get all his incredible musicianship and composition, but we get to hear: just Louis-just him and his honest thoughts in the form of song. He is a great songwriter and can very easily communicate complex emotions through lyrics, though he also humors himself with funny detours. LC is screwed by the industry because I am 100% certain that, with the 80s or 90s industry behind him, he'd have been everywhere. If Collier had the same support, I believe he'd be seen as more of a jazz or prog guy and, while very clever and interesting, not fit for heavy rotation. See: Frank Zappa
I know Jacob can write songs. I don't know if he can get in touch with his darker side in order to write well. I know he can keep it simple, I don't know if he can admit that he should. If he needs to relax after Djesse he'll probably veer into instrumental jazz or otherwise territory, which is fine but still avoiding the one thing that will sustain him the most. He needs songs that anyone can remember and anyone can sing. The wall of vocal harmonies thing is not going to last forever. We need to hear: just Jacob. I think that's reasonable.
Sorry for writing too much here-I shouldn't have, really. But I'll just leave it with an anecdote from after seeing Jacob's show in NYC in 2018 or 2019. I met up with some girls I met there and we all went to eat and discuss it. One was a Black girl from MIT. I was candid with my opinions in the same way and they all readily agreed. The flimsy drums, the over-mixing of styles, etc. They were the ones to first call it cheesy or corny, not me.
Mind you, we had just watched and enjoyed his show! But they said the album versions were just trying to be everything all at once and got in their own way. They all wanted to hear something simple and powerful instead. That could be a live album, a stripped down album, or anything else. We all agreed he was intentionally creating the epitome of overproduction. The fact remains that when his fans want to show people his music, unless they understand music theory, the response is often negative. Collier kinda peacocks his music just because he can, but we don't live in that feathery world. I'm telling you, he's got to pivot towards the simple.

The album is a mess. I don't care if he has perfect pitch or if he can play a million instruments or has a billion IQ. This album 100% feels like the product of an overactive imagination trying to cram a million things into each song, and no one being there to stop it.

Yeah, bro. The song that’s most likely gonna win next year’s grammy for Best Arrangement “doesn’t go anywhere”

That is a song by Simon and Garfunkel, obviously he can do good when someone else made the song, even then he fucks up the whole thing and made it unbearable, Garfunkel does way better job by himself...

@@Loganisnotaloserr When people say "you don't have to listen to it' they mean "you don't have to continue listening to it". If you don't like it then just move on. I personally don't like Led Zeppelin's music (controversial, I know), but I'm not gonna waste my time making a video whining about why I dislike it. Because no one cares.

@@Loganisnotaloserr I can summarize it really quick - when I listen Led Zeppelin my mind associates it with things that I don't like, which in turn creates negative emotions inside of me. These negative emotions hold me back from appreciating the musical ideas in their songs. I can appreciate how skilled they are but my own personal associations with their music makes me dislike it.
One day in will probably experience some things in life which makes me look at their music from a different perspective. Then I might appreciate their musical ideas, who knows. But until then, I don't. Everyone has connections to music like this, which makes my opinion not very relevant. The end.
