  • Hello! We are a family of 4 building our own home in La Union Philippines. After 30 years of living in Toronto, Canada, we decided to move back to the Philippines to start a new chapter.
    We are in the initial phases of our home build. Our goal in this new chapter is to prioritize those important to us, things that add value to our lives, and master the art of simple intentional living. The real fun is about to begin!
    In this channel, you will find a snippet of our province life, as well as things we learn along the way.

    Hi Fam😘! All the warnings we received when we first started construction did not go in vain. In spite of our vigilance, we still encountered loads of issues. We were holding off on posting this video until we were sure we have ironed everything out. It definitely feels likes a huge weight has been lifted and it's all starting to sink in. The real FUN is about to begin! Can't wait to show you guys the final result! 🥰

      Build a ton of reserve for your business. You have two properties your building at the same time. It’s gonna be hard if you start operating and have 20K in electric bills every month in each property with employees salaries to pay and not enough customers coming in to pay those bills.

    I lived all my life in Makati where skyscrapers meets the sky. I went to visit my cousin who lives in the province and wow the sun meets the earth when it rises in the morning and sets at nights. Fresh air, fresh veggies, fruits, seafoods are a lot cheaper and sometimes you can have them for free. I envy you both from the bustling city of Toronto to the daily life in the province. I wish someday I'll live a life like yours.

    I like what you guys said that people will have their opinions whether you are pursuing your dreams or not; so might as well pursue. Oftentimes, it is also not the things that were said but the intent of why it was said. Glad to see how things are coming along for you guys. I can only imagine the leap of faith and courage that you had and have to take in pursuit of this journey. Always, always pray and commit yourselves and your endeavors to the Lord. Remember that He already blessed the place where He has called you.

    Props for the move to Surftown, pretty sure you guys will enjoy life in LU. Doing the same, trading places, 416/905 to Brgy Ili Sur, San Juan. Not sure if you guys surf, but you are in the right place if you do. When is the resort slated to open? No doubt it will be next level when it does. I would like to be a part of your staff if you are hiring. I teach snowboarding in Glen Eden in Milton back in the day but I am now with Visitor Services. Your story is inspiring and it would be sweet if I can see it transpire in person. Cheers and Goodluck on your venture.

    Just wondering regarding trying to decide a layout at this point. Do you have floor plans that already layout those areas? This is because it will really affect the utilities locations, especially re-work and change orders... Just keep in mind finishing work is the most expensive and time consuming part of the project. Anyways, great videos...🤙🏼

    Dont worry Em and Lani.. You both made a good and mutual decision to move here in the Philippines and get to spend quality time with your two adorable daughters.. I know its not easy leaving your jobs in Canada earning a big income but who knows you both will become succesful entrepreneurs here in the Philippines and at the same time raising your kids without the guilt feeling spending more time with them as they grow up.. Life has its ups and downs.. You always learn and grow and dont take failures as hindrances but change for the better and humbly taking the steps one at a time until you can finally say I make it..Of course, dont forget to thank God for the blessings whether big or small.. What I like about you both is that you are an inspiration to others..At a young age you both already planned your hard earned money and retire here for a better life I guess.. We really cant tell but just believe you can do it and trust in God,'s plan and He will be with you as you continue your journey building a new home and a bigger family here in the Philippines.. Life is short.. Its not only about work3x in order to have lots of money...Everything is temporary in this world.. Make a difference by showing love, a touching soul and inspiration to everyone! Good luck Em and Lani! Pray for guidance and strength to face life's challenges...Hope and pray to meet your family God willing! Love you both and kids! God bless your fam! 🙏❤

    Start planting coconut trees and other tall plants on the sand in front of your property. When you guys showed the aerial view I don’t see any trees at the beach. The area does not give a beach vibe like Boracay or Bohol. People will get attracted to the beach if there are a lot of trees.

    The more it goes the more money will spend. Finishing is the most expensive mone to spend. Actually this is the beginning to cry more. Mas magastos ang finishing believe me, magtatae k ng pera at at tuwing matatapos dun mkikita unti unti yun maliliit problema. @ronaldsunga2759 11 місяців тому

      Haha natawa ako sa magtatae ng pera pero this is so true. Been building commercial properties for the past 25 years and tama po kayo dyan. Kahit ngayon I still get scared when I build one. Yung initial budget na 20M to build can end up 30M pag natapos na. Minsan nagdo double pa nga. Kaya i am advising them to build a ton of reserve on their plan since they plan to operate the business as well. Ako rental lang sa kin, once rented wala na akong gastos.

    Sorry to make this observation but your building for a house along the shoreline is literally less than 100 meters from the river! That looks trouble during a super-storm or great rush of flood water from the river when there is a long deluge of rainfall. Also, it seems to be against the PH Building Code since you did not comply with the required 2 meters setback on your rear and sides of your building.

    • @ronaldsunga2759
      @ronaldsunga2759 11 місяців тому

      They had firewall on the side and rear. There is no need for setback as long as you have a firewall.

    • @mikelangelo818
      @mikelangelo818 11 місяців тому

      @@ronaldsunga2759 not true. Firewalling in that area is not permitted as per PH building code. Read it and be informed.
      The problem in the PH is non compliance with laws abd regulations, palakasan at palusutan.

      @@mikelangelo818 I built and owned 17 commercial properties/buildings there over the past 25 years and some of my properties have that same situation where I did not have a setback and I built all the way to property line by just having a firewall and city inspectors approved them. So do you mean you did not follow the PH Building Code as well? You said you built "commercial" properties/buildings. Then you should be aware that commercial buildings can only be built in commercial areas...And it should be the likes of you who should be complying strictly with the Philippine Building Code. Yup could not agree more. I have 17 commercial properties owned over the past 25 years and built them all from the ground up. Every project always go over budget everytime. The last phase of the project is always the most expensive. Also I would suggest that always have a back up plan on the type of structure you build. You plan some suite rooms in there but what if time comes and you cannot attract customers to rent those suites. Remember you don’t dictate the demand, it’s your customers who will dictate it. What is really in demand in your area. Do some survey what thrives in your community. You will have empty spaces that will be sitting idle after that if the suites don’t attract customers. IBusinesses usually thrive the first two years and after that can be challenging. Be innovative and always open to change. If the suites don’t bring in money you can open up the walls and change them into lounge area or convert them into karaoke rooms. I have several tenants from my properties over the past 25 years ranging from pharmacy, restaurants, massage and spa, computer shops, gown rentals, bakery, etc. and what I learned is that a lot of them the most challenging time is surviving the first two years. The hardest part in running a business is having employees to pay, utility bills and property tax and not having enough customers/profit to pay these bills. The tax assessor could think that your making a lot of money from your property and could slap you with a big business tax come in January when in reality your just barely surviving. I have tenants where the business tax renewal is the last straw that breaks them and close their shop.
