So pleased so many people in this comments section were taught how to boil an egg or discovered how to themselves. For those who didn't have parents who knew how to boil an egg or didn't think it was worth passing the info on this is invaluable so that people who don't know can learn. Thanks Jamie for being willing to teach the basics. This is why Home Economics should be back in Schools for everyone.

@@javiswsmith1302 I'm not sure I understand your comment. Did you mean those who don't know how to boil an egg could simply ask someone? If so, what about those people who don't have someone to ask, or struggle to ask for help. We need to remember that just because we are able to do things ourselves, even apparently easy things that we couldn't imagine someone else struggling to do, doesn't mean that there aren't people who struggle with those things. It's great if you're someone who is able to ask for help and if I've understand what you've said that you have clearly got people to ask for help that's great too. Just try to remember not everyone is so fortunate.

If you really want to learn how to cook and I'm not knocking Jamie.. but try Delia Smith's "how to cook". you can say what you like about Delia but her recipes do. work. And if you live north of Birmingham you need to double the portion size. Cok this it serves 4.. Probably does darn Sarf.. But I'd read it as serves 2

One note of caution, if you live in North America:
Supermarket eggs (both regular and free-range) are usually washed prior to shipment, removing a protective coating that keeps them from becoming too porous. For that reason, eggs in North America *have* to be refrigerated to preserve their freshness, contrary to what JO says.

I use the cold water, bring to a boil for 1 min and take off heat, cover and let sit method. Works very well for hard cooked eggs BUT when I lived in parts of Canada the timing differed for the same size eggs. 15 minutes in higher elevations down to about 7 minutes here at sea level. So there is no one timing that is universal, you really should let folks know that...

Here's a caveat.... if your eggs are straight from the chicken, Jamie is correct, they don't need refrigeration. HOWEVER, if the eggs have been washed, they need refrigeration. Many places require the eggs to be washed before being sold. So ask your vender. Your eggs were probably washed (removing the protective coating that keeps out bacteria.) 💜🌞🌵

in my opinion salt helps not cracking as salty water has higher specific density than fresh water , so the egg has a bit more resistance on the water,so it is hit with lower power on the pan's wall. in other words, eggs in fresh water can't float, while in salty water they perhaps can float.
for me the best is to put in a small white towel

I did some hard boiled eggs tonight after watching this. All my life I've either undercooked them or super overcooked them. Following the 11-12 minute rule with a pinch of salt my eggs were hard boiled to perfection!

  • @godlygamer911

wait so first he says add salt even though that scientifically makes no sense and then he says that people are crazy for believing the cold to boil method? Does he not see the irony in that?

Sorry Jamie but the easiest way to boil an egg is in the kettle, stick the eggs in, boil kettle then leave eggs in for 3-5 minutes depending on how you want them. Much quicker and less hassle, you get the same results every single time. I only boil eggs this way now. 👍🙂

Um do you know what aesthetic even means? You are using it in the completely wrong context. Maybe look it up in a dictionary or even google it next time.

I like the consistency of a 8 min egg myself. Placing the egg in an ice bath for 1-3 min will stop the egg from continuing from cooking once removed from boiling water.

America's test kitchen has the most consistent method, don't boil eggs, steam them. When you put the eggs into the boiling water it cools down the water. So if you are doing a bunch of eggs the water takes longer to get up to boiling again, don't have that issue when steaming. But hey whatever they are just eggs.

What has changed since I was a kid?
We used to chuck a few eggs in the pan, boil the water, turn over the egg timer, take ‘em out and eat them - good well boiled eggs - then get on with our lives!…..
Now we seem to be in a different universe where reality has gone
    t12’s up and It doesn’t
work anymore? We now have to research the subject online, where even celebrity chefs are queuing up to show us how to do what we could always do blindfolded, and when I try their methods- yep!- they don’t work!
