      Since you're so talented at interpreting and analyzing lyrics I'd say Tool - Parabola. Very inspiring and well-written text and the musicianship speaks for itself.
      or Harvest by Opeth. They're a death metal band but this is an acoustic song. Very interesting lyrics and the meaning is pretty subtle but I can probably guess what it's about after many listens.
      Have a good one mate!

    I was fortunate enough to meet Corey in Auckland in October of 2008, I had a decent talk with him and one thing I had to ask him was the "You couldn't hate enough to love, is that supposed to be enough?" line in this song. He told me something that I think about a great deal, he told me that love is not the opposite to hate. Because both love and hate come from caring about something so much that it pushes you toward love or hate. He said that the opposite of love and hate is apathy, and that is the true measure of separation. When somebody doesn't even care enough to love or hate you.

    Shawn "Clown" Crahan doesn't get enough credit for his filmography. This video was even better than I remembered, I hadn't seen it in about 15 years before just now.

    • @ninja_tony
      @ninja_tony 3 місяці тому +12

      Absolutely. I HATE how many people say “what does he even do in the band.” He’s essentially the manager and creative director, on top of being the mastermind behind almost all of their videos. He does A LOT and doesn’t get nearly enough credit.

    • @Zinetha
      @Zinetha 3 місяці тому +3

      @@ninja_tony I know, right! "All he does is wear a clown mask and bang some barrels, he might was well not be in the band!" is an argument I've heard countless of times over the years. 1) He founded the band, with this other person who left in like 1-2 years after they founded it. They asked all the best musicians they knew (personally) to join. 2) He directs and produces all the music videos through his production company. 3) He produces most of their music. 4) He used to be a welder before he quit his day job, and has built his own drum stands. I think that's pretty cool. 5) He came up with the fanbase name, Maggots. He saw an animal corpse full of maggots and thought them swarming in the corpse looked the same as their fans moshing. 6) The band writes all the songs together and doesn't specify who wrote what, but he has allegedly written quite a lot, i.e. the piano parts in Spiders. 7) He was the first to wear a mask and the rest of the band went along with it.
      This band is his life's work and would not exist without him.
      Apparently he's also very humble, because I've been listening to them since 2007 and didn't know any of this until maybe a month ago. The library I work in needed an Instagram post and he turned 55 on the date, so I wrote about him. (A former library I worked in used to do tiny displays of musicians' CDs and biographies who had recently had a big birthday, like 40, 50, 60yo, etc, or who had recently passed, that's how I got the idea.)

    This song was written after his divorce from his first wife during the production of the album All Hope Is Gone, once again referring to her. Paul Gray was the one who pushed Corey to make it a reality. At first, Corey wasn’t sure how well this song would do with Slipknot. He contemplated doing it with Stone Sour or dropping it as a solo track, but Paul insisted that it would be perfect for Slipknot. It introduced a new side of the band. Behind all the rage, scorn, and ferocity the band was known for, there was this new face of torment and desperation. If you watch some recent interviews with Corey, he actually changed the dedication of the song to Paul. He’s finally over his ex-wife, and now he sees this song in a new light, remembering and thanking Shawn for pushing him to follow through. Yes, of course, The Devil In I is still dedicated to Paul, but that was from the whole band. Snuff is now a memory for Corey on a more personal level. Just some wholesome lore for you to enjoy:)

      It was Paul that convinced Corey to record this. Then, one day, Corey recorded this with Paul and Joey in the studio. After they left, Joey went back and laid down the drum track. After this they showed the track to Corey and only then Corey said that this was suited to be a Slipknot song.

    • @ShaneAddinall

      The help this song was to Corey during a really dark time, only to have Paul Gray die of an overdose, resulting in it being an emotional two-edged sword for him. You can really hear this dichotomy in his voice in the acoustic version.

    This can read be read in 2 contexts:
    1. A break up with a destructive romantic partner,
    2. Breaking up with a destructive part of yourself. Like the healthy part of an addict breaking up with the addiction. This is what the video is hinting towards.
    On the first...I first heard this after a break up I thought I was over. The line "it took the death of hope to let you go" made me collapse in sobbing tears. I pressed "back" and looked up the lyrics and bawled. Its so cathartic and beautiful.

      "Instead of comparing rap to other music styles, think of it as rhythmic poetry."
      Something a mate of mine said 20+ years ago that changed my appreciation of rap/hip-hop, and I use it sometimes when talking to fellow metalheads. And it's something that Knox and many other rapper illustrate perfectly. Good rappers hold a lot closer to gifted poets than most musicians imo. They hear the message, the story, feel the cadence, before the music itself. The lyrics are the focus.

    Being someone who has been cheated on when I was younger, this song hits a deep rooted cord whenever I listen to this. Such a powerfully written song.
    The Lyrics: “If you still cared, you’ll never let me know.” just hit like a freight train. When someone left my life after a lot of time spent believing they truly cared, it at the time would have broken me more to hear they still cared. I’ve been stuck before and ran back to exes from the shear hope they still loved me. This was the person I was years ago and has healed since then, but damn do those lyrics remind me of that hell I was living in.

    • @CarlosCruz_cc

    This coming from a true metal head. I have listened to Slipknot since their first album, always loved metal music throughout the 2000's. But this song in my opinion is one of the greatest songs Corey Taylor ever wrote. There is so much passion in this song from him and it's so much different than anything Slipknot had released up until that point. This song has so much personal meaning to me it's honestly hard to watch you break it down, because it's so personal to me. "You sold me out to save yourself" one of the greatest lyrics ever written. This is my fave slipknot song, along with vermillion parts 1 and 2. Another vote for the Corey Taylor live acoustic version, the emotion in his his voice is intense. ❤

    One of the deepest song lyrics I have ever heard. When my sister ODd and died there were lyrics here bc I felt she left me here in pain that has at times took my breath away 💔 we were 14 months apart. I lived 1.5 hrs away I happened to be in town where she lived, we grew up there. 6 hrs later she was found in a bathroom stall at her job a staff of 9 didn't notice sbe was missing for 90 min smh. She died alone and addiction was the one thing we had shared in common and i was almost 4 yrs clean. I couldn't save her from herself. She never seeded any help she sold me out to save herself. She always told me she was fine dont worry sis. I spent 37 yrs loving and protecting her so i felt by her death she sold me out by leaving me here and saving herself by dying instead of saying sis i need help 💔

    Corey wrote this with a fellow band member that passed away shortly after and when he performs this live he relates it to his friend while also delivering the feeling of the song. Ive actually never watched the video and it takes on another view of the lyrics which ive never had listening to it alone. Deep lyrics and if you check out the acoustic version Corey performed in London you can see all those words heavy on his shoulders.

    What I got from the video the first time I've seen it was that for so much that he wants her and yearns for her yet can't have her; he became her.

    This song is one of the reasons I got the Slipknot "S" on my arm. I am planning on adding the song title near it but that is after adding the Stone Sour "S" for the song Bother. To remind me to never go back to my ex, which both songs reflect for me on.
    Corey sang both songs with the emotional cutting of a sword. There are few songs that brings me to tears, but Snuff is one of them.

    This is one of my favourite songs. I love watching the reaction knowing what is coming up next in the video. Also when he smashed the glass, that was a real glass. He really hurt himself. There is a bts and you can see how he lets everything out and i mean everything. If you get a chance to watch that section it made me cry. Also you need to check the acoustic version.

    Brother, I love the level of detailed insight you put into your reactions. Phenomenal!
    This song was about a relationship Corey had. Many believe it was his marriage to Scarlet Stone. He was going through some heavy stuff during the marriage, including addiction, and she ultimately gave up on them and the marriage. Corey’s anger and pain at the loss of the relationship and what he felt was unreturned love is the antithesis to his gratitude that he was able to use that horrible moment as the final push to get himself out of the addictions and bog he was mired in.

    Metal Mondays!!! Knox Hill, I NEED you to do a lyric breakdown for Omega by Stone Sour. It's not a song, it's like spoken word from Corey Taylor. I'm desperate to hear someone break it down but I can't find a single person that's done it, and your breakdowns are hands-down the best...help me out here, man! You'll LOVE it!

You catch everything in every song, and this song has so many layers, I’m so happy ❤❤❤ I don’t know how much Corey Taylor you’ve listened to before but PLEASE dive down that rabbit hole 🤞🤞 Also, please do Apocalyptica featuring Corey Taylor “I’m not Jesus”! Knox: I think we know where this is going.
    Oh dear sweet Knox, you have no idea.
    One of the things you didn't touch on, you may have missed. The end when the spoken lines repeat, it's her saying "I want you to promise, that you'll never let go" and him replying "I promise", but then she says it again, and it turns into an overlap of him saying "I want you promise, you'll never let go". He's the one that originally said it, but he's convinced himself that it was her saying it.
