As a german this is one of my favourite music videos, because it actually manages to capture the german struggle with Patriotism very well, considering for me, such as for most germans, patriotism and pride in your german nationality are things that we, outside of sport events, consider too closely linked or even equivalent to right wing populism or National Socialism. You will rarely ever see a german flag anywhere unless the world cup is on or you are in a very right area. But I think that this is a sign of us being aware of our history and it not being forgotten or understated. This is also one of the reasons why to many germans the american patrionism is strange (especially considering the fact that the US don't have the cleanest history either). While you pledge allegiance to the flag in schools on daily basis, the first and the second verse of our national anthem (which not many people know by heart anyway nowadays) are banned, because of it having been used during the Nazi regime states. (The problematic part being: ,,Deutschland Deutschland über alles"/"Germany Germany above anything else", which is also in the Rammstein song). I really enjoyed your analysis and knowledge of the german history and have mostly been a silent viewer but wanted to share opinion on this topic.

But nevertheless: don't beat yourself up for what your country has done. Indeed, no country will ever be perfect and yet you can be as patriotic as you want without being hypocritic. It's just the way politics are, I guess and it's not your fault. I'm proud to be German and I'm not buying into this "I'm not German, I'm European" bullcrap. F*ck nazis and the far right, tho.

As a white American, I can sympathize. As you said my country has done, and continues to do horrible things in the name of power and control. So I have no pride in the terrible things my government/people have done in the past.
While many cultures teach them to have pride in their ethnicity, that is not something you can do either. African Americans can believe in black pride, Latinos can proclaim "viva la raza" (long live the race), to say white pride unleashes a nasty can of worms.
Instead I try to take pride in the ideals my country represents if not it's reality. The Ideals of Truth, Justice, Freedom, and Equality for all....not just the majority, or the ultra wealthy, or the well connected.

Hi Knox, you were pretty spot on in capturing the meaning of the song and how it captures the struggle that Germans can have with their country. This explains why we often find it strange that in America you would sing the national anthem in school and salute to the flag. Actually until the Football World Cup in 2006 which was in Germany we rarely saw flags even in the arenas for football games. Even now sometimes there is still discussion if it is okay to show national pride again or not.
In terms of the video I can give everyone who doesn't know yet a bit of additional infos:
    - The black woman is supposed to represent a mythological impersonation of "Germania" usually she is depicted as a white woman of course but here they use her skin colour not only to provoke but also in combination with her clothes and the lighting you have the colours of the current German flag (black, red and gold)
    - the scene where they eat her symbolizes the times where the Church was living a very rich life while the normal people (you see them under the table) are starving, poor and fighting for survival
    - the exploding zeppelin is of course the Hindenburg. Germany was very proud of its airship technology but that accident basically buried that kind of technology as a means for mass transport
    - the raining down money is a reference to the inflation during the financial crisis between the 2 World Wars (Black Friday etc.) it is said that you could sit down in a Café and by the time you finished your coffee and cake the prices had already doubled or tripled. People were getting their monthly pay in pushcarts because each banknote was worth so little
    - in the "camp" scene you see the V1 the first modern rocket and each of the prisoners on the nooses wear a different sign (jew, homosexual, communist etc). All of these groups were used for labour and then liquidated
    - the people with the shotgun and other weapons are a reference to the R.A.F a communist terror group that abducted a German conservatist politician, causing bomb terror acts and stuff like that
    - the dogs could be seen as a sign that the leaders want to have citizens who listen and don't bark just following commands I guess.
Of course there is more but these are the things probably the hardest to recognize for someone who is not knowledgable about German history.
In German we have a distinction between you (opposite of I) and you (opposite of we). It is "Du" and "Ihr" but in English that can be confusing I guess :D

The last piano is a callback to a much older song of theirs "Sonne (Sun)." When you know the lyrics to that, it adds another layer of emotion to the last bit:
"Everyone is waiting for the light
    Be afraid, don't be afraid
The sun is shining out of my eyes
    It will not set tonight
And the world counts loudly to ten"
My take on it in the context of this video: everyone is waiting for the nightmare to end, count to ten to wake ourselves up. Be brave, we'll make it through. Its not our time to go. As the chorus goes on to chant "Here comes the sun," we're waking up and leaving the nightmare behind.

Let’s go!!! Rammstein goes so hard! In fact if we wanna get into semantics the genre they fall under and that they pioneered is called Neue Deutsche Härte (New German Hardness). Their riffs might be simplistic but their lyricism and stage presence is god tier
“What I love is the callbacks” you don’t even know Knox! Their most famous song is Du Hast and if you ask any Rammstein fan they’ll probably tell you that was the first song they ever heard. So hearing the repetitive Du Hast isn’t just background vocals calling back to the main vocals but also a callback to their most popular song. Which is fitting because Rammstein is 100% a part of German history and culture (hell even their name is a reference to a historical German tragedy)
“Return of the Jedi” ok you just made something click. In Star Wars it’s often said that the Empire and Darth Vader are a metaphor for Hitler and the Nazis so it’s possible the space imagery could be in reference to that
Also fun fact: that piano at the end constantly has a motif that’s heard in their song Sonne, who’s chorus repeats the phrase “here comes the sun” so I’m lead to believe that that motif is being used a subtle way of saying the sun will rise on us again and our future will be bright

    • @ExarchGaming
      @ExarchGaming Рік тому +1

Yup, NDH is amazing, my favorites from the genre are Oomph! Eisbrecher and Rammstein for sure.
The wild thing is that Du Hast, they completley changed the lyrics when they released the english version... as Du Hast doesn't mean you hate, it means you have. Du Hasst would be hate. The entire song is a play on wedding vows. the english video is a completely new song and separate.

The song "Sonne" is actually about boxing and was written for Wladimir Klitschko. It was supposed to become his hymn, but he thought it was too hard and chose a different song. Still, you got the counting to ten, seeing stars, falling to the ground, etc. The sun refers to the man himself, being the "brightest", most well-known star in boxing. At least in Germany.

Actually, that`s a common misconception because George Lucas is Jewish, as are the current directors of "Star Wars" in many cases, however whilst "Triumph of the Will" was an aesthetic influence on the Empire, it was more meant to be a self-criticism of the Watergate and Vietnam-era US and the Rebels and Ewoks were the Viet Cong(The small, ragtag poor farmers fighting and just barely defeating this high-tech,imperial,wealthy superpower.)

I love that the band members are always featured in their videos, and that aspect is especially powerful in this one. In a way, this song is a confession, apology, and a plea for understanding, as you mentioned, the duality of being German. The visuals, lyrics and music are next level. I have yet to see Rammstein in person, but seeing videos here on UA-cam, this song is a clear highlight of their live performance. Watching you tackle this song, I finally noticed that Ruby is wearing Till Lindemann's metal fire breathing wings at the end of the song. For all the things that can be said about Rammstein and their music, I think the fact that they have not changed band members once so far and seem unlikely to ever do so. For a band that's approaching thirty in a couple years, that's quite a feat.

I love your reactions, because you're so well read and knowledgable in so many different things one doesn't really expect you to have a detailed insight on (sorry, not because you're American but also because the styles and topics you cover are so diverse). I'm really really loving this one, because I've seen it before, I've seen reactions before but this is the first time I really find myself engaging with it as a source and taking it apart alongside you and getting a deeper understanding of just how unequivocally brilliant every.single.thing about this is. The story, the photography, the acting, the music, just geared towards showcasing the absolute banger of an emotional impact our very fraught yet loving relationship we as Germans have with our nation and patriotism.
I'm just going to solve one thing for you, which, if you're anything like me and are driven bonkers by unanswered questions, will still bug you (though if someone else in the comments already did, I'm sorry) - the pronoun game is always Ich(I), Du(you), Wir(we), Ihr(you plural) and they're always, protagonist, subject, tribal group, the other, which I think coincides in most of the shots. Anyway, thank you for doing this I enjoyed this reaction immensely.
If you haven't done it yet, I really really recommend you do The Hu Band - Wolf Totem for another Metal monday, you'll get another cinematic gem of a music video and a very special kind of metal.

I really have to say Knox, I didn't expect such a great reaction from you! You really tried to empathize with the message of the video and the song and also tried to understand and convey the message behind it. You really put a lot of love into your reactions! Greetings from Germany

I love the bridge that Rammstein is between mainstream music and rock music. "Sonne" by Rammstein was my entry into rock/metal music coming from listening to 90s rap and I feel Rammstein has music that everybody can appreciate, no matter what genre they listen to regularly.
I'd love to see you react to more Rammstein, "Sonne" as mentioned is one, "Du hast" is probably their most popular song and most iconic song. Their live shows are absolutely phenomenal, so I think you'd appreciate them too. Loved the insanely good breakdown as always.

That piano part at the end is very very similar to another song from Rammstein: Sonne. That song is really powerful, started as a boxeur anthem became a very powerful and dark song. Sonne means sun: everyone of us has a sun, a Christmas comet that follows leading to the deepest suffering or a way to escape it.
I really hope to see a reaction to that song! Keep going, you're doing a very good job at reacting and understand messages going through the verses with the effort required to really being able to appreciate the song.
    Cheers!

I'm impressed - you even managed to nail the "you (singular), I, we, you (plural)" meaning.

The piano outro/titles are from Rammstein's track "Sonne". Well worth a reaction as well.
