For me, it’s Apple’s undeniably fantastic suite of accessibility features. I’m visually impaired, and these products have allowed me to work and create like no others. I would even confidently argue that nothing in the industry can remotely compare; especially when you consider the rest of the things mentioned (the ecosystem, seamless and efficient design, universally user-friendly interfaces). I think this quote from Jony Ive about Apple’s design philosophy perfectly summarises why I love using these products:
*”I think there is a profound and enduring beauty in simplicity…in clarity …in efficiency. True simplicity is derived from so much more than just the absence of clutter and ornamentation... it's about bringing order to complexity.”*

  • @SeemsLikeSomething

My favourite aspect of apple stuff is their focus on experience. They want you to feel happy or satisfied or even just satiated without having to dig into it in any technical way. The trackpad is a good example. You don’t really care how they made it feel so great to use but you do end up wondering why every other trackpad ever made feels like hot garbage in comparison lol

This is what I love about Apple products. They put a lot of focus on user experience and it goes a long way. I daily drive Windows on my work laptop/desktop at home and Linux on the servers at work but own both an iPhone 13 Pro Max as well as an M1 iPad Pro. I use both my phone and my tablet while having AirPods in my ears and the simple fact that audio output to my AirPods automatically switches between both devices, depending on which I'm currently using, is fucking amazing. Every device Apple produces is so easily paired and configured; it's incredibly intuitive and it's a pleasure to use. Everything just works so well together and stays out of my way after a long day of bullshit at work. I'm looking at getting a MacBook Pro as a desktop replacement soon and delegating my desktop to a Proxmox host. That's how much I love their ecosystem.

@Bgkillas No it just doesn't. I have used Windows since at least version 3, I have used Linux since you had to install from a million floppies and Macs for about 10 years. Linux has many of the issues of Windows (having to be written to run on everything instead of being able to concentrate on a few devices), no self-made hardware to partner with it (like the Apple trackpad) and its lacking huge amounts of software (which Windows of course mainly wins at).
The Macs have strengths that Linux simply cannot compete with.

Worked in IT for 26 years and used every single MacOS OSX version from the first release 20 years ago, till the last. So I've been using Windows and OSX extensively at work and home over those years. When it comes to OS consistency, reliability and privacy, Windows does not stand a chance at getting me back from MacOS. When I have a say in the matter, MacOS / IOS for me, Linux and the BSD's for my servers. I only use Windows when I have no choice.

    • @littlebighumancom
      @littlebighumancom 2 роки тому +20

Same. Been in IT since 1996. I've used Windows since Windows for Workgroups/Windows 3.11. I was a NT 4 MSCE. At work I use Windows, because most of my clients do and I have no choice. I'm very much a pro user on Windows. I write code on Windows, I use Powershell. But boy do I hate the OS. First of all it looks pretty much like it did 20 years ago, but worse, the whole user experience is the same inconsistent mesh. From app to app, menu's are different, short cut keys are different.
At home I have Macs and a Proxmox cluster to run my Linux servers on, I also have a bunch of Raspberries for all kinds of fun projects. We always had iPad's in the household, but I never had a use case for it myself, until I got the iPad M1 + pen and now I use that extensively for 3D drawing, Concept app for concepts, etc. So for me it is Mac and IOS for clients and Linux on the server all day. I have one Windows gaming machine from which I stream games on all our other devices.

I love my MacBook. It’s a mid 2015 with retina. I just had to get some repairs done on it recently (new fans, whole battery/keyboard/trackpad assembly entirely replaced) because my battery had degraded and actually expanded. Cost me about $300 at a repair center, and I spent another ~$300 installing a 2tb NVME SSD myself at home, and I’m entirely confident this thing will last me another 5+ years.
This is one of the last MacBooks where you can actually replace components. The newer ones have everything built in to the base board. I’ll hang on to this thing until it becomes a pain to use it every day.

I just run Linux Subsystem for Windows when I need a real Linux terminal. But having all of it in the same environment does wonders for keeping yourself sane... I personally don't like macOS shortcuts for every app is different from windows, it is too disruptive to me even the navigating on text boxes by "Ctrl + arrows" doesn't exist, middle mouse scroll as well... Maybe MacOS with a trackpad/magic mouse is more blissful to use. My Windows is already set up with an environment I've painstakingly taken care of for years, I even use Veeam Agent backup utility (daily, seamless bit-perfect delta images of my system drive) to roll back any state of the drive from the last 16 days... Pretty much TimeMachine for Windows. Has file level restore too. I run a Windows Enterprise which was converted from an LTSC image, to make sure it had as zero bloatware as possible. I've turned off updates, because I prioritize stability, I'll update if any major security flaw or feature update arrives. I've turned off all telemetry crap as well.
Btw, my "mac" was a hackintosh, but it was perfect, I JUST didn't like:
      - the text rendering engine on low dpi monitors
      - keyboard layout
      - shortcuts
      - Lack of native NTFS support
      - native window management
      - scroll (with a regular mouse)
      - text-box navigation behaviors...
      - MacOS & Windows file system manager tries all they can to corrupt with each other's file systems and the entire disk altogether, they are so ridden with glitches, you should just never keep NTFS on the same partition as a MacOS exclusive partition.
... And just because my stuff wasn't there and I couldn't bother with reinstalling software and setting things up on a new platform... Every trial I had to mount NTFS on MacOS was painful and those third party drivers give you warnings of possible corruption risk. Nope, I just won't bother. Maybe someday I'll buy a real Mac just to give it another shot, while I still have my everyday trusty, painstakingly-crafted windows binary-perfect image until it gets rotten with glitchy registry trash and littered with unintentional uninstallable-bloatware.

Great video LTT! However, a couple key workflow items that I miss greatly on windows that weren't really mentioned:
    - Spacebar previews for entire documents that don't require opening an application (so useful to make a quick review of document versions)
    - Customizable hot corners (which I use constantly and makes switching between tasks much faster than windows)
    - Ecosystem communication (as partially referred to in the video) which allows me to receive notifications and quickly/easily respond to texts on a computer. (I use this daily)
I have both a PC and a Mac and I am always happier working on the Mac (even though I accept that the highly regulated ecosystem limits max power of the computers for better and worse). If I could put Mac OS on a beefy PC build without the nightmare that a hackintosh still is, I would absolutely do that. I wouldn't even mind buying some Apple components to make that happen, but I want more control over the build than Apple currently allows. I'm still using a 2009 MBP and a 2013 Mac Mini Server which I have updated over the years specifically because I don't want to buy one of the new Macs that are so restrictive. That being said, the love-hate relationship I have with the Surface Pro isn't any better.

From what I know, its because Mac has a designated index database for all your stuff, and its in sync with your daily activity, and shares the same index with your icloud, I caught it working in the backgroud a couple times, maybe 10-15s in session that the you can monitor the process if you pay attention, so when you search stuff, its searching through a tree structured database with weights and models considered to rank relevance, whereas windows literally put all your file names in list and go through it one by one, and spotlight is not only faster, while buildiing the index system it also goes through the contents in your file, so if you have a set of keywords in a pdf file, searching for the keyword would still return the correct file, although its not the name and only appeared once in the file, try it yourself. the thing about mac apps is they are so complete, they're complete packages with designers thinking of every possibility and needs the user might need at some point. And exclusive hardware support makes it possible for them to fine tune it and be sure everything works butter smooth.

I don’t use almost all of the reasons you listed here, but I can say in 35 years time I think I’ve had less then 10 system crashes that required a reboot. I sure do miss the very good build quality of the early machines, though as well as having a built-in physical interrupt switch that would launch you into macsbug debugger.

I recently dived head first into the Apple ecosystem, and have really been enjoying it so far. The simplicity and continuity, reliability of the products really help get things done more efficiently.
There were a few basic elements which I really miss and hope you consider adding in the near future to MacOS.
    1. A Windows snapping tool (A simple tool to easily move and resize window). (Drag windows to the corners of the screen and it snaps into quarters. Use side edges to arrange horizontal and vertical halves.)
    2. A clipboard manager. (Apple's clipboard provides only one buffer for the "copy and paste" function, and it is overwritten by each new "copy" operation. The main task of a clipboard manager is to store data copied to the clipboard in a way that permits extended use of the data).
    3. The ability to double click on an apps icon, in order to close it.
    4. The ability to create a custom app icon in the app drawer for Gmail and Google keep etc.
These are the 4 most used interactions on a daily basis that can save hundreds of hours over the course of time, and make the experience with macOS more convenient and seamless.
Thank you very much for the incredible work and looking forward to these 4 new features!

I started using Macs back in the early 90’s and have always had a Mac at home. My workplace on the other hand, has always been Windows. Windows has always been frustrating. Nothing works right. It’s slow and clunky. Sometimes I’ll move 5 or 6 files to another folder and get the “not responding” message for about 30 - 40 seconds. Sometimes I’ll copy text, go to another program and it pastes nothing until I do it about 3 times. I’ve never had these issues on my Mac!

@@mamamia8891 Firstly, if you spec a good Dell XPS or other quality PC vendor with the same hardware as comes on a Mac, you find the prices within 5% of each other. Macs are only more expensive compared to lesser hardware. But to answer your question, here are two situations that you can try in Windows. 1. On a Mac, with Finder (Explorer) open, you can quickly use the cursor to move down a list of files. Hit Spacebar to almost instantly open a "quick look" view of the file - audio, video, pdf, word doc, excel, whatever. Hit up or down arrow to move to the next file, and it immediately changes your quick look to that file. So if you're trying to sift through a folder with a bunch of PDFs and quickly find the one you need, it is really really fast and convenient. There is no Windows alternative that responds quickly at all, not even close. 2. In the sad case where a vendor only shows a receipt in HTML (or if you need to save an email to PDF), you basically only have one option: Print to PDF. On a Mac, this is a two click operation, and it's very fast. On a PC, it is more steps, including having to stop and name the file. There may be software or plugins which can be added to improve that, but it definitely isn't built in. In my case, I spent more than a year on a better specced Dell XPS 15 (compared to my old Macbook Pro), but the day to day performance, and even the Adobe Illustrator and Premiere performance) was better on the Mac.

@@zed9zed I agree with you on most of it, but a Dell XPS is definitely not within 5% of the price of a Macbook. I had to order ten new laptops for my team Europe and was looking at both Macbooks and Dell XPS laptops. The XPS 15 with comparable specifications to the 15-inch Macbook Pro (512GB SSD, 16GB RAM, i7, etc) is about 60% of the price! Besides that, the Dell has a superior keyboard, better support (they'll come to your office the next day), a far superior GPU and a longer battery life. The Macbook does have a slightly better screen though. As the OS isn't a big factor for our work (mostly on-site data crunching), the choice was quite obvious.

@@zed9zed Macs aren't expensive compared to Dell XPS, because the XPS is overpriced too. xD You can easily find a laptop with the same specs as an XPS or Mac for half the price. The only reason to either get an XPS or a Mac is because of their high intensity and color accurate displays. Which brings me to the following: You'd NEVER buy one of those if you AREN'T a professional. And if you use an XPS or Mac for work, there's a 90% chance your company paid for it and has ownership of it.
Macs and XPS are very poor choices for consumers and very good choices for professionals (especially considering the software on a Mac). The reason they are overpriced is because companies usually pay for them. And they DEFINITELY don't pay retail.
