This was one of my doubts all along. I'm an android user all along and ik iMessage is inclusive only to apple devices. So people sticking onto something like this is like 'im only friends with iphone users'..Now that, google messages is inbuilt in most androids or atleast every manufacturer is switching to it, it will be a so much better move to support cross-platform. All the things he told abt SMS apps in android were true in the past but now they're like just the same as imessage. They're just SMS/chat apps anyways.

My samsung j3 2016 model has better battery then my brother's iphone 7:/ and I got it for only 200 dollars. Nowadays you can get an a10 for that price and aj a10 is a 2019 model. Some of those arguments are a stretch at minimum. For example: - How is "android is mostly open source" an argument for better iPhone? Like what... the fact that Android may have (and not even always do) some parts that are 3rd party locked is bad, but somehow iOS that is completely locked by Apple is somehow a good thing? - "no 3rd party apps on iOS makes it secure". So if USA bans cars it will be good because there will be no accidents? Don't want crap on your phone don't install something you are not sure about from an APK you downloaded from www.totallylegitfreeapps. com . Then if you want to... you can! And how is this bad? - 6 years longevity huh? Sure... if you get it 6 times to iSpot for repairs (or once or twice to Louis Rossmann). Or "you can just upgrade" ;) - Migration argument is also wired. So when you go from Apple to Apple it's great. Well... if you go from X to X or Y to Y or any other SAME BRAND to SAME BRAND it's also seamless. If you went from Apple to Samsung that wouldn't work would it? Then again even with different brands Google ecosystem makes it almost seamless...

"New apps launch first on iPhone." That has nothing to do with the phone. Some apps have launched on Android first (Firefox) or not on iPhone at all due to it being too locked down. If a certain app gets released later on Android, that's the fault of the developer not Android. That's like saying iPhone is better because it's popular (for whatever reason). So if another popular phone comes out iPhone wouldn't be better for that reason. Where as other reasons for making an iPhone or Android better would still apply.
@Servine 10. Someone I know who got a new iPhone (old one was just got Photos, not on a network). They were so frustrated trying to get an Apple account and billing just to install Facebook Messenger. I was able to set it up after she and her technically illlerate BF couldn't do it (although he was able to get Messenger on his Samsung no problem). I had to create a new email address for her, just to use to install Messenger. I thought these things were supposed to be for the tech illiterate. Her BF complains about his work switching to iPhone, although maybe it would have been the same switching in the reverse direction, but the lady I know whose first "Smart" phone is an iPhone doesn't seem to be in that position.
I'm an Android user, but I don't get why there's so many dislikes on this video. The points Linus makes are all completely valid, plus there'll probably be an alternative video for Android.
As someone who has bias against apple after watching this video I admit if apple made a competitive mid range phone and added more flexibility to IOS then I would seriously consider an Iphone. But either way screw the fanboys especially the apple ones.

As an Apple fan though, I will never take my dislike back from his iPhone Xs review. Not because hE dIDn't lIke tHe pHone I spENt $1000 oN, or tHe pHoNe I lIkE a Lot, but because he talked so much BS in that video that even though I like Linus a lot and still watch almost every one of his videos (and even though I know a lot of people from the dumb Apple sheep community disliked that video too, I just had to dislike it.
iOS isn't stable at all, I gotta reboot iPad few times per day or some apps stop working correctly. Only reason I'm using iPad is company forced me and also using iMessage for communication among staffs. I don't like iPad but still better than nothing, I'm okay using iPhone If its free, so I can read/reply work order on iMessage. iPhone/iPad is good for make work organized compare to Android devices just because lack of variations.

Ok, look, this video isn't about Linus going back on his word, it's not about him taking back anything he said, it's about him saying that the past TWO reviews were largely negative, and while that negativity was valid, he also needs to give credit where credit is due, everyone saying that he's just trying to appease the mass of iPhone fans, that's wrong, go and look at his gaming on Linux reviews, as soon as he saw how it could've been construed as an uneven view of the situation, he made another video basically with the pros of gaming on Linux, that wasn't him saying that Linux gaming was perfect, just like he isn't saying the new iPhone's are perfect, he's just trying to equally represent both sides of the tech he's reviews.
Well he never specified the comparison here in what makes them better. So it's open to debate how they're better and in regards to what. Better for some people? Better then he made them out to be? Not like he's saying they're better to him personally, but that they're better under certain conditions and for certain people.

Jadu HD my point was that it seems that a lot of people reference the hardware specs as to why a phone is good whilst forgetting the software. The 2 need to work seemlessly to have a great phone but a lot of phones don't have this.

The hardware in the high end Android phones is good, it’s the operating system that sucks. Apple got it right by locking down the iPhone and putting all the apps in one place, behind a single App Store. They have complete control over the quality and security of every app you can get on the phone. No crashes, no viruses, no weird apps that spam you with porn ads, the phone just works every single time I pick it up, no exceptions. Android is a buggy mess, even if you use you manufacturer’s standard pre installed ROM, you can still get all kinds of trash on your phone gumming it up just by visiting a web link. I rely on my phone for pretty much everything, having unsigned code able to run on it, having app stores with zero quality control? Big no-no.
I agree lol It depends on your tastes. I went through a software coding faze and I loved Android then. It had a lot of freedom, even if the phone would get a virus or broken coding because of my carelessness LMAO 2018 and 2019, I now like Apple a little more. I like the secure, sleek look and how they feel. SO honestly it's just what preferences you have lol (PS: old androids are good for the ECO ATM or just selling straight up XD)
I think weight of the argument about iMessage varies from region to region. In the netherlands, pretty much all smartphone users have whatsapp installed on their device. Most of my family members, myself included, have iPhones, but we never use iMessage.
i think in most of the world that's not the USA, whatsapp is the main messaging app. Hell, even my 80 year old dad in india is fascinated with whatsapp because it let's him keep in contact with family from all over the world with group messages and the like. He's probably the reason I have it installed on my phone. All his dad jokes are getting a little old though.

I don't get the hate to this video. Every single reason Linus has pointed out are legitimate. And I'm an Android user. I've used an iPhone in the past but iOS simply wasn't my thing. every year when samsung or oneplus launches a new flagship i tell myself "yeah this is better than the iphone" and i end up switching from my iphone to the upper mentioned androids but after like 4 months i always go back to the iphone. nothing has given me the smooth experience that iphones gave me. This year went from note 10+ to iphone 11 and i don't regret it one bit. And i'm planing to stick to apple from now on

Wtf is this like/dislike ratio? Seriously, why can’t these 33K people who disliked the video just accept that iPhones has distinct advantages over Android phones. The fact that the other video talking about Android’s advantages got a much more favorable like/dislike ratio says a lot about the tech community’s toxicity regarding smartphones.
As a developer, the *biggest* reason I like the iPhone is that *everyone* is running the same damn version of iOS! With Android, you've got to support way the hell back to Android 4.4.x!! With iOS, you support the *current* version only (and *maybe* the previous version), because well over 90% of the iPhones/iPads currently in use can be upgraded to the most recent version (and if you include the previous version, you're rapidly approaching 99% of the iOS devices in use currently). Why does everyone upgrade their iOS device within a week or so of a new version coming out? Because it's available to *everyone* at the *same damn time!* With Android, Google releases an update, the manufacturer has to go through it and make all their bullshit changes and add all their bullshit bloatware (and each manufacturer takes a varying amount of time to achieve this), then the carrier has to put *their* bullshit bloatware on top of it, and *finally* it gets released in an OTA update, whereupon you say, "oh, yeah, I remember reading about this update three months ago..." Apple's updates come from Apple directly. If you want, you can force-download it within *seconds* of it being released to the public -- although if you leave it up to the automatic-download it could take up to a week for you to get it (which is still weeks or even months faster than an Android update gets to you). Android is so fragmented it's ridiculous.
I love my pixel 2xl and would probably never buy an Apple tbh other than an iPad. But your absolutely right, this is how literally the same reason iOS is so we'll optimized.
You make a great point but as a counter argument I say this: As a developer when I'm supporting an older version all I have to do is include the support library. That means I can add most new features worry free. On Android updating to the newest version isn't as important as it is on iOS.
The version requirements now in place for submissions to the Play Store should help with that a bit, as it ultimately creates a baseline for when people should expect their older Android versions to stop getting new apps. Whether or not that drives better long-term support from manufacturers and carriers -- ehhh, I doubt it. But at least now devs have a more consistent roadmap of when they need to plan on migrating to the latest APIs.

I don't have a problem with them either as long as they're not smug idiots about their iPhones, but a lot are. It's a "status symbol" to a lot of people unfortunately. I like android because I can customize it. if I didn't know anything about computers or smartphones, I'd probably go with an iPhone for simplicity and "security." But I'm a long time pirate and tinkerer. You can find a lot of paid apps for free. There are tons of apps not even on the Play store, and I hate being locked down and restricted the way Apple does it. And I'm not a fan of updates that slow down my phone either.

Apple has gone out of their way to prevent third-party programs from syncing with an iPhone. Android can just connect to a desktop computer and you get access to files. To put music on, just copy the files over. With Android I can get an app apk from anywhere and install it. I can back up my current apps to desktop, in case I want to roll back. There are tons of apk archives so using an older Android phone is no problem. With Apple once they drop support for an older version of the OS, or they don't approve an app, you can't get it anymore. Everything is so locked down. Android is far more open to customization and third-party authors. I don't doubt that iOS is more polished and integrated, partly because of it being more closed. If what Apple provides fits your needs, then I don't doubt it will be better than Android. A huge issue with Android is all the different versions of the OS in wide use, and the lack of upgradeability of devices.

First of all yes Apple blocked third party authors and you can’t install apk files, but it’s really easy to get a virus on Android, and it is much more customizable, but not everyone needs customization. But on the end of the day android is android and ios is ios, you can use whatever you like more.

Also it's hard to argue that iOS devices are just simpler to use, and people like us who like Android devices are willing to put up with the bugs and bullshit that the average consumer isn't. Your note about imessage is inaccurate: anywhere outside of the US, google pay seems to be the more popular option meaning that the ecosystem in that area is more android, rendering imessages useless when whatsapp and signal exist, have the same encryption as imessage, and are cross-device (windows, mac, android, ios)

It's the same thing vice versa, used ios for majority of my life, only coming on a year ago I got my first android device of my own(Alcatel u5, I ain't rich) but have used android device before that, I love it, personally I still use my iPad more for the larger screen and(ironically) is faster than my phone, but would definitely use it more if I could afford a more powerful phone

I did watch that video and I do think he went over the top. Yes, they're valid complaints that he did bring up. I don't think he was coerced into making this video. The odd thing, which I never noticed, and if did never bothered me was app placement and how ios forces to move apps to the top of the screen, now it does bother me. App placement and having an app draw is great and wish iOS supported it.
Actually, both sides are equally good/bad, and they complement each other. Its the same as having Point A & B and have to choose between Way 1 or Way 2.... they are different, but both ways start at A and end at B, so its a personal choice.
As a user of both android and ios. I can definitely say that Iphones are addictive. The buttery smoothness of iOS and the app optimisation is just flat out unbeatable.

I suppose it is true for the Superchat, though it become pretty much useless after the actual release happened (imo, too many message to be useful). It's great for uploaders to be able to put the video online, and release at a set date, don't want to take it away from them, I would like that if the sub screen for users was better designed to support it (e.g. let the user have a separate section of premiered/live videos, having custom categories). Right now, the feature is rough, and doesn't bring much at all to the table, apart from superchat (meh).
It's like one of those hostage videos where the kidnapped sits in front of camera and says everything is ok and he's being treated nice while people with guns are pointing at his head outside the frame

I believe they are both equally as good but Apple is a tiny bit better as their performance on iPhones are always a year faster than some android flagships.

The brand new Android Snapdragon 855 still can barely beat the 2 year old Apple A10 in single core benchmarks. The new Apple A12 is way way faster than the SD855 (even though the 855 launched later). Apples iOS is also much better optimized and runs fluidly, while Android is extremely laggy, buggy, and fragmented. Barely anyone gets the new Android update, while almost every device gets the latest iOS updates. iPhones perform way better than Android's and that's a fact

Personally I'm an Android user, why, because I like that it's a similar os over multiple devices, eg I can go from my pixel 2XL to a Samsung Note 9 and know that in majority, it's the same. I love the way the iPhone works, I enjoy using them, but I personally find the usability and portability of the Android device, suit me better. As you said, both have their good points, both have things that suck!

Longevity is a big reason I switched to iPhone. I’ve had 3 androids before and while two of those were entry-level, all of them started to feel slow pretty quickly. I bought my XS open-box in august, and while the model is almost 2 and a half years old, it’s faster than anything else I had before, and I’m certain to get updates for a few years still.
I might sound dumb but I actually enjoy reinstalling my apps and transferring my photos, it makes the process of getting a new phone feel a lot more rewarding in a way

That has nothing to do with the phone. Some apps have launched on Android first (Firefox) or not on iPhone at all due to it being too locked down. If a certain app gets released later on Android, that's the fault of the developer not Android. That's like saying iPhone is better because it's popular (for whatever reason). So if another popular phone comes out iPhone wouldn't be better for that reason. Where as other reasons for making an iPhone or Android better would still apply.
@Servine 10. Someone I know who got a new iPhone (old one was just got Photos, not on a network). They were so frustrated trying to get an Apple account and billing just to install Facebook Messenger. I was able to set it up after she and her technically illlerate BF couldn't do it (although he was able to get Messenger on his Samsung no problem). I had to create a new email address for her, just to use to install Messenger. I thought these things were supposed to be for the tech illiterate. Her BF complains about his work switching to iPhone, although maybe it would have been the same switching in the reverse direction, but the lady I know whose first "Smart" phone is an iPhone doesn't seem to be in that position.

Not really, he only did this due to pressure from the mass of iPhone fans clearly. As he is not even talking about his personal pros with the device. He has done only negative video about other stuff before, why not now? He really went out of his way to find pros for the iPhone that doesn't even him consider it a pro. iPhones are great phones. As are the high end Android phones. To me, it’s about personal preference!
The hardware in the high end Android phones is good, it’s the operating system that sucks.
Apple got it right by locking down the iPhone and putting all the apps in one place, behind a single App Store.
They have complete control over the quality and security of every app you can get on the phone.
No crashes, no viruses, no weird apps that spam you with porn ads, the phone just works every single time I pick it up, no exceptions.
Android is a buggy mess, even if you use you manufacturer’s standard pre installed ROM, you can still get all kinds of trash on your phone gumming it up just by visiting a web link.
I rely on my phone for pretty much everything, having unsigned code able to run on it, having app stores with zero quality control? Big no-no.

I agree lol It depends on your tastes. I went through a software coding faze and I loved Android then. It had a lot of freedom, even if the phone would get a virus or broken coding because of my carelessness LMAO 2018 and 2019, I now like Apple a little more. I like the secure, sleek look and how they feel. SO honestly it's just what preferences you have lol (PS: old androids are good for the ECO ATM or just selling straight up XD)

I think weight of the argument about iMessage varies from region to region. In the netherlands, pretty much all smartphone users have whatsapp installed on their device. Most of my family members, myself included, have iPhones, but we never use iMessage.
i think in most of the world that's not the USA, whatsapp is the main messaging app. Hell, even my 80 year old dad in india is fascinated with whatsapp because it let's him keep in contact with family from all over the world with group messages and the like. He's probably the reason I have it installed on my phone. All his dad jokes are getting a little old though.

every year when samsung or oneplus launches a new flagship i tell myself "yeah this is better than the iphone" and i end up switching from my iphone to the upper mentioned androids but after like 4 months i always go back to the iphone. nothing has given me the smooth experience that iphones gave me. This year went from note 10+ to iphone 11 and i don't regret it one bit. And i'm planing to stick to apple from now on

As a developer, the *biggest* reason I like the iPhone is that *everyone* is running the same damn version of iOS! With Android, you've got to support way the hell back to Android 4.4.x!! With iOS, you support the *current* version only (and *maybe* the previous version), because well over 90% of the iPhones/iPads currently in use can be upgraded to the most recent version (and if you include the previous version, you're rapidly approaching 99% of the iOS devices in use currently).
Why does everyone upgrade their iOS device within a week or so of a new version coming out? Because it's available to *everyone* at the *same damn time!* With Android, Google releases an update, the manufacturer has to go through it and make all their bullshit changes and add all their bullshit bloatware (and each manufacturer takes a varying amount of time to achieve this), then the carrier has to put *their* bullshit bloatware on top of it, and *finally* it gets released in an OTA update, whereupon you say, "oh, yeah, I remember reading about this update three months ago..."
Apple's updates come from Apple directly. If you want, you can force-download it within *seconds* of it being released to the public -- although if you leave it up to the automatic-download it could take up to a week for you to get it (which is still weeks or even months faster than an Android update gets to you).

You make a great point but as a counter argument I say this: As a developer when I'm supporting an older version all I have to do is include the support library. That means I can add most new features worry free.
On Android updating to the newest version isn't as important as it is on iOS.
If this is a legitimate concern for you, you are a shitty developer.
The version requirements now in place for submissions to the Play Store should help with that a bit, as it ultimately creates a baseline for when people should expect their older Android versions to stop getting new apps. Whether or not that drives better long-term support from manufacturers and carriers -- ehhh, I doubt it. But at least now devs have a more consistent roadmap of when they need to plan on migrating to the latest APIs.

I like android because I can customize it. if I didn't know anything about computers or smartphones, I'd probably go with an iPhone for simplicity and "security." But I'm a long time pirate and tinkerer. You can find a lot of paid apps for free. There are tons of apps not even on the Play store, and I hate being locked down and restricted the way Apple does it. And I'm not a fan of updates that slow down my phone either.

Apple has gone out of their way to prevent third-party programs from syncing with an iPhone. Android can just connect to a desktop computer and you get access to files. To put music on, just copy the files over.
With Android I can get an app apk from anywhere and install it. I can back up my current apps to desktop, in case I want to roll back. There are tons of apk archives so using an older Android phone is no problem. With Apple once they drop support for an older version of the OS, or they don't approve an app, you can't get it anymore. Everything is so locked down.
Android is far more open to customization and third-party authors. I don't doubt that iOS is more polished and integrated, partly because of it being more closed. If what Apple provides fits your needs, then I don't doubt it will be better than Android. A huge issue with Android is all the different versions of the OS in wide use, and the lack of upgradeability of devices.

Your note about imessage is inaccurate: anywhere outside of the US, google pay seems to be the more popular option meaning that the ecosystem in that area is more android, rendering imessages useless when whatsapp and signal exist, have the same encryption as imessage, and are cross-device (windows, mac, android, ios)

I did watch that video and I do think he went over the top. Yes, they're valid complaints that he did bring up. I don't think he was coerced into making this video. The odd thing, which I never noticed, and if did never bothered me was app placement and how ios forces to move apps to the top of the screen, now it does bother me. App placement and having an app draw is great and wish iOS supported it.
Actually, both sides are equally good/bad, and they complement each other.
Its the same as having Point A & B and have to choose between Way 1 or Way 2.... they are different, but both ways start at A and end at B, so its a personal choice.
As a user of both android and ios. I can definitely say that Iphones are addictive.

It helps them make some money thanks to premieres supporting superchat, and for smaller channels it allows them to directly talk with viewers about what's wrong with the video. This channel is way too big for that last one.
I suppose it is true for the Superchat, though it become pretty much useless after the actual release happened (imo, too many message to be useful). It's great for uploaders to be able to put the video online, and release at a set date, don't want to take it away from them, I would like that if the sub screen for users was better designed to support it (e.g. let the user have a separate section of premiered/live videos, having custom categories).
Right now, the feature is rough, and doesn't bring much at all to the table, apart from superchat (meh).

The brand new Android Snapdragon 855 still can barely beat the 2 year old Apple A10 in single core benchmarks. The new Apple A12 is way way faster than the SD855 (even though the 855 launched later). Apples iOS is also much better optimized and runs fluidly, while Android is extremely laggy, buggy, and fragmented. Barely anyone gets the new Android update, while almost every device gets the latest iOS updates. iPhones perform way better than Android's and that's a fact

Agree with you there. Personally I'm an Android user, why, because I like that it's a similar os over multiple devices, eg I can go from my pixel 2XL to a Samsung Note 9 and know that in majority, it's the same. I love the way the iPhone works, I enjoy using them, but I personally find the usability and portability of the Android device, suit me better. As you said, both have their good points, both have things that suck!

Longevity is a big reason I switched to iPhone. I’ve had 3 androids before and while two of those were entry-level, all of them started to feel slow pretty quickly. I bought my XS open-box in august, and while the model is almost 2 and a half years old, it’s faster than anything else I had before, and I’m certain to get updates for a few years still.
I also switched to iphone for the this reasons
I might sound dumb but I actually enjoy reinstalling my apps and transferring my photos, it makes the process of getting a new phone feel a lot more rewarding in a way
