      @@itzSudden Oh, but you can't really say that a OS sucks because of the amount of software it has, then you should say that it's dead, which is clearly not the case. There are plenty of programs that run natively on Linux and when you are desperate there's always wine. Of course Linux will fall behind in the amount of software it has if you compare it to Windows which is pretty much the standard desktop OS.

      they have minesweeper, solitaire (which includes some other card games), mahjong, sudoku, puzzles, word games and some others on the store. These are the "official" ones. At least I like to think they are and they do have "microsoft" written on them so.. and they're all pretty good. They're improved versions of what we had.
      But yes, unfortunately pinball is gone from there and so is Chess. CHESS! I loved chess and while the store has a ton of chess games as well I just don't like that it's not official ya know...

    I switched to Linux for a few months and got caught in the loop of "I'm cool cuz my os is unique!" and end up spending most of my time using it doing google and figuring out how to do the most basic things. After a while of learning the basic things, I realized how pointless this was. I could do basically everything I do on windows, and much more efficiently at that. Programs that are supposed to be alternatives to windows are just plain worse. Because 99% of people use windows and it's programs, compatibility becomes a huge problem. I couldn't work with microsoft office documents with "Libre-office", only on the web based office. And some programs just doesn't exist all together. After a ton of that "It's fine I can live with this..." I finally switched back to windows, and found out "everything just works" like before. I guess Linux was okay, but it shouldn't rely on the "if you learn its much better than windows" bull crap that is just plain wrong. Unless the community or userbase gets larger so developers actually care to port their programs to the platform and make it an on par experience like on windows, unless that happens I'll stick with windows thank you.

      I know it is hard for the first time when migrate from Windows to Linux. I switch to Linux in 2016. Till now I'm still learning, read the wiki, man pages, tutorial and go to forum to ask is the best troubleshooter that I met. Linux is more efficient when running on low hardware. Dual core Celeron, 4GB of RAM, 10GB of hard disk is more than enough for me to browsing web while running Libreoffice, listening music and updating entire system. Basic things is done by aliases, script or functions. Automatic task done by cron job or startup script. I know that I cannot use Libreoffice like when I use Microsoft Office. I feel they have same purpose but do it in different way. So when I switch to Linux, I totally decide to do all things based on "Linux way" not based on "Windows way". Work with terminal isn't horrible like I think before. With the help of aliases, I don't need to remember bunch of command. My system was 4 years old now and I never doing reinstall. Only in Windows I ever got BSOD, and I don't know how to fix it except doing reinstall entire system. I'm not a gamer and I don't have enough money to buy a powerfull hardware, so Linux is the only choice that I have for my cheap laptop, maybe this is what I call efficient. Now I feel more confuse when using Windows because I cannot use Windows like when I use Linux. I think it is better to use Linux only if all applications that you need is available on Linux and your hardware is not powerfull enough to running Windows.

    • @razzlfraz
      @razzlfraz 5 років тому +3

      Unfortunately content creation is the single most lacking field on Linux. If the software you're using is supported on Linux, you're going to get a stable and efficient version, often better than Windows, which is great. But if it's not, there is Wine, which can run most Windows programs out of the box and is worth trying. Running a native Windows app on Linux you might notice a speed increase, increased responsiveness, and often increased stability.
      Start with Linux Mint, which is the most popular Ubuntu based distro, and the most Windows like. It's the closest to "home" mainstream distro. Like moving from Windows 7 to Windows 10, moving from Windows to Mint is about as straight forward. With Mint you get: Support from the Ubuntu community. A stable operating system with stable programs. Super easy program installs and super easy auto updates using PPAs. And, if there isn't a ppa for the software you want to install both Ubuntu, Debian, and Linux based installers, from the company website, will work on Mint out of the box.
      The only "hitch" if you could call it that, is I recommend installing up to date graphics drivers from NVIDIA or AMD. Newer drivers can be selected in Driver Manager found in the start menu. For whatever reason NVIDIA's drivers do not auto update to the newest version, so I check every few months, due to NVIDIA being weird, but AMD's drivers do auto update which is nice.

PopOS IMO has better chances to survive as its backed by System76, and still as much as I loved it, I'd prefer to stick to more "solid" and long term options, at least for work.

      As if Linux and MacOS never introduced any bugs with patches or updates. Don't be ridiculous. Measured by the complexity of Windows (which IS higher than MacOS because of the backwards compatibility to Win2000, partially even back to Windows 3.1, supporting third party drivers and literally billions of hardware combinations it's a miracle Windows doesn't blue screen once a day. And they STILL manage to patch exploits faster than Apple. Meanwhile professional Mac users have to carefully weigh if they update to the newest OS version, not just because there could be bugs like on Windows, but it is EXPECTED that many professionally used software titles need an upgrade before working on the new version, and those updates sometimes take months or won't come at all because the product was just taken off the shelf (while you still like to use it).

    I use MacOS and Windows. Why I think Windows UI is way better than that of MacOS. Here are some of the biggest gripes with MacOS (1) application windows cannot be maximized like Windows10, and icons to minimize, maximize are too small (2) One shared application menu bar for all open apps; and because it is not attached to application window, sometime you have to click the application window to bring up the right menu (3) App dock takes up the bottom of the screen and menu at the top wasting real estate (4) Windows10 looks clean and modern (5) No preview of window on task bar (6) Closing window does not close the application, you have to quit the application separately (7) Finder menu stays at the top even when no application is open, just not the right approach (8)Track pad gesture to switch between windows or to minimize open window is not as elegant as in Windows10. Over all I think Windows10 is well thought, simpler and easier to use than MacOS.

    Windows usability out of the box? With the automatic updates forcing you to restart? With the ads in the start menu? With the ads on the lock screen? With the ads in the shell prompt? With two settings locations? With the barely usable search feature? The apps getting installed automatically during OS updates? Smoothly working features getting replaced by their worse versions on each major update? Updates breaking drivers? OS updates changing your personalization settings?

    A lot of Mac users use these two arguments:
    “Windows takes a lot of setup”
    No, it takes installing the new edge, installing Steam, and installing your games. Done, set up.
    “There are too many different options for Windows”
    Yeah, because it’s better and you don’t just have one company selling them.

    • @nixellion
      @nixellion 5 років тому +6

      Just to be fair, chances are that Linux will pick everything up as well. Unlike Windows Linux does not use 'generic drivers' in the way Windows does, support for most devices is included in the kernel. You can then install proprietary drivers for like nvidia if you need. There may be issues with graphics drivers, for example if you switched from nvidia to amd, but you will still get terminal from where you can purge old driver and install new on in like 2 commands and 2 minutes. Just saying.

      I use windows 7, and I ripped out the hard drive because my mobo died and put it in a new system (still intel) with a new motherboard and everything, and it booted right up. Generic drivers and the hardware abstraction layer windows has is top notch... compared to osx
