On a surface level Dragon Quest seems like "any other RPG" or like it's nothing you can't get on other games, however it's the execution that makes this game what it is.
Dragon Quest is the quintessential traditional RPG, it's the combination of Akira Toriyama's distinctive art-style and character/monster design and Koichi Sugiyama's bombastic and yet soothing orchestrated soundtrack that you'd expect to hear in a high fantasy movie from the 80s, it all comes together to produce one of the most recognisable presentations in gaming as a whole... But it doesn't stop there, Yuji Horii really knows how to write and structure his games in a way where it really feels like you're having an adventure (He was one of the writers for Chrono Trigger btw) In the DQ games there rarely is a focus on your lead character's story, instead they focus on you travelling from town to town and in each one there's a little story, in each one you build memories with the cast of characters you find there, it feels like you're exploring and getting to know the game's world, like it's a real adventure! Experiencing Dragon Quest is a truly magical thing and it's an experience that I think every RPG fan should have at least once, and I urge you reading this comment to pick this game up and show Square Enix that bringing this game to the west was worth it! I will not stand for yet another Dragon Quest drought!!
exactely. I often find it hard to explain the appeal of dragon quest games. I often look back at a comment I made, or something I said about the series. and i think to myself "this doesn't sound all that appealing or original. but I don't know how to explain it any different way". but the games are just so well executed. you really just have to experience it. they are very cliche on the surface, but it embraces it, and turns it into something great. it just represents the core of why i love jrpgs.
I agree at first sight newcomers might think it's another generic game, and it is generic but only because it DEFINED what RPG's are all about. Once you dive into the game though you stop seeing it as generic because you get sucked into its world.
For me it's the big combination of traditional turn-based combat with a party of characters, coupled with the amazing Monster design (seriously, I can never get over how much I love seeing the Slimes, or my favorite Monster the Hacksaurus)and the very iconic and fantastic sound design for the whole game.

I picked it up, and didn't get out of the opening hour.. that was probably unfair of me, but there's so many games out I just put it down and haven't been back..
Michirin9801 do you think the originals are worth playing then? I have dragon quest 7 and gonna buy dragon quest 8 after I finish. I bought 7 first cause it was on sale and I was gonna buy it eventually anyways. I got dragon quest 9 on the ds. I heard that Dragon quest 1 and 2 build up 3. 1 and 2 is about an amazing hero then 3 you play as that hero. Are they worth it?

The importance of music is often understated. It made the intro to this video. Good shit.
I never cared about getting a 3DS until I realized there's a bunch of Shin Megami Tensei games released for that system. Being a SMT collector, I just got a Persona Q 3DS XL in like new condition for $125, yay!!! Aaaaand my first game for the system hasn't been a SMT one. It's been Dragon Quest VII. There's something very special about this franchise. It touches the childish side of my heart. I loved DQ VIII on PS2, it's my personal favorite JRPG ever, along with Vagrant Story and SMT Nocturne.
I own a switch and yet today I'm whipping out the 3ds. I'm sad it's been discontinued, but on the bright side a lot of the games are cheaper/more affordable now! So we will continue to enjoy it for years to come yeah?
They need to release DQ I+II+III compilation on 3ds to complete the series!!!!

Stephen Almogela and make the battle sprites visible too. I could never get into the early dragon quest games because the camera loves focusing on the monsters.
Btw its funny seeing Gabo with a wolf in the 3ds version. I think it fit well since he was a wolf.

I'm 32 years old and up until the past six months I had no clue what dragon Quest was. After watching your reviews I started playing dragon Quest 11 and after 80 hours of gameplay I finally beat it. I've now purchased dragon Quest 7 8 and 9 and I can't wait to dive in. Thank you for your many reviews!!

This is my first Dragon Quest game, I'm 55 hours in and loving it
7 was always my favourite in the series. The amount of time you have to invest, the difficulty level, the satisfaction you got from completing it all - Great to see this one get a remaster and update.
Its a remake not a remaster. Theres a difference. A remaster is touched up in terms of resolution, maby a few qaulity of life tweaks etc but essentially is the same basis as the original. This is a remake*, it was built from the ground up for the 3DS.

That's sad, considering I started my first Final Fantasy game when I was about that age or maybe younger in the late 90s.
Diego Sanchez kids today are sadly playing angry birds, candy crush, and call of duty black cocks, and rugby with helmets (NFL EA). We are the only ones playing RPG's on a 3ds like FE and Pokemon. We are the kind who plays a lot of Japanese games and care about dragon quest, final fantasy, Pokemon, Zelda, dark souls, skyrim, Mario.
It's sad I am the first to see video games bing simplified and more look like a Michael Bay movie, other then a Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, or Peter Jackson movie.
I'm currently about 50hrs in. Loving it. Man the feels with some of these story arcs *sniff* won't lie brought a small tear or two to my eye a few times so far. Big fan of the dragon quest games only I never played them back in the day I've played and own all the remakes on the (3)DS.

Amazing intro! I've been playing this game for a few days and I gotta say that I absolutely love it. The last Dragon Quest game I played was Dragon Warrior Monsters for the GBC so many years ago and this was an amazing way to be reintroduced to the series. Overall great review man!

GoldenSirius Japan gets everything first. so far DQ X all versions are for the Japanese market, including PC and 3DS DQ software.
i finished this game a few weeks ago on the 3ds. i put 135 hours into it. i really loved my time spent with this game.
I've never played one before and picking this one and the next up for my 3ds next week!
I kind of always want to buy the older DS games too, but they're getting really expensive now.
Get them anyway. If you like Dragon Quest, the older ones are essential. Not a huge fan of DQV, but get DQIV. It's one of the best in the series.
Some DS gams like Heart Gold/Soul Silver cost more then a new 3DS game..

matthewschark Do, it's awesome! The swoonworthy music alone is worth more than the asking price and you get a great game with a moving story in addition.
Dragon Quest 3 (released here as Dragon Warrior 3 back then) on the Gameboy Color is still one of my favorites, I LOVED the personality test you play through to determine who you are/stats your have, I loved picking up your team and having them be any class, where Jesters were the WORST, but were the fastest to unlock the Sage class without the prerequisites beforehand. I remember loving the hell out of the sprites in the game, and our party members being badasses. The game was pretty tough if you ventured to the wrong places, I still won't forget the dreaded Pyramid which could trick you into falling to the basement floor and having to take a good while to get back to where you fell from...good times.
I need to get more Dragon Quest games. I currently own Dragon Quest 3, Dragon Quest IX, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 and then Dragon Quest Heroes.i
Went to my local store after work this morning to look for a few movies and I always take a look at the game section to see what they had and I do recall seeing that they had a spot for Dragon Quest VII, but it was completely sold out >..< So i went and picked up Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright

That intro was awesome.
I got this at launch for the 3ds and it was my first dragon Quest game, I agree the music is definitely a high point of the game. And some parts of the game are so tough, like when you get to Alltrades Abby, UUGGFHHHHHH. But what a satisfying game. My favorite piece of music is "Memories Of A Lost World".
Wow that intro was epic. My copy will be here in just a couple of days. I really look forward to getting back into this. When I was young I remember getting Dragon Warrior through Nintendo Power free for a promo. Great series.
The Japanese version of DQ7 on 3DS has the Symphonic Suite version of the soundtrack, but for the localized version they unfortunately replaced it with MIDI versions for whatever reason.
Sugiyama-san wanted MIDI for JP version of DQ 7, but SE twisted his arm to do something for 25TH anniversary. so SE and Sugiyama-san had falling out.

I really love how this game takes a long time to beat. They don't make games like these anymore. FFXV took less than 20hrs to beat, I was disappointed
I'm so glad Dragon Quest VII came out over here in Europe, been playing it for a fair bit and am loving it. I really hope VIII comes out over here. By the way the intro was awesome :)
dragon quest 8 for 3ds has been confirmed for us In Europe. it will come out some time next year.

jep. they announced it during the same Nintendo direct where dq7 for 3ds was announced. it was pushed back to 2017 from the original 2016 release date. but we are getting it.
What American fans don't know is France never got the PS1 version, happy for France and Europe that the finally get to play DQ 7 3DS.
Yup, dragon quest 8 was the first one over here, and to cover up the fact that they missed out 1-7 they named it "Dragon Quest - The Journey of the Cursed King" and they kept the number ommisiin through the ds remakes (4&5) until dragon quest ix came out, which got the number, dragon quest vi for the ds also had the number and due to it being released atter 9 (which was pretty popular) its really easy to find cheaply while iv and v are not...
Just finished Dragon Quest on the SNES and now working my way through Dragon Quest III. Very enjoyable series!
I'm about 40 hours into the game, and absolutely love this version. I really enjoy the updated script. Kiefer and Maribel are much more fun characters, and I love all the new text for the party chat stuff. I liked the PS original, but wow, this has been an incredible update. I'm super excited to see what they do with DQ8 on the 3DS! I'm glad you enjoyed it as well, Johnny!

8 is my favorite and I just can't wait for that gorgeous Orchestral soundtrack again.

If you have a good pc, play it on the pcsx2 emulator. Orchestral soundtrack and upres graphics! :)

It's not really midi, it's more synthesized. It will sound fairly close to orchestrated but it'll be a bit more harsh and big band sounding.
Ljink 96 Tbh it's not that bad. I'm playing DQVII on 3DS now and I like the battle theme a lot more in west version than in orchestred japanese version. It's not like it's worse by default.

That opening was awesome! Actually I didn't even know there was an English version coming until last month. Hard to believe it was locked in Japan for about 3-4 years. Glad to see it's in English now

Awesome review! I didn't play DQ7 until about five years ago but I really enjoyed it, as I do with pretty much all DQ games. I loved all of the DS and 3DS games in the series I've played up until now so I'm sure I'll be picking this one up at some point.

NO. the games are not linear, you can enjoy then in Any order you wish.
There are also I&II and III for gameboy Color. So you can actually own all of Dragon Quest for Handhelds.

This game is so long, and I love it. I’ve spent 60+ hours and I still haven’t gotten the job classes yet 😂. You and Kim acted epically!
How is that even possible? Job classes unlock about 20 hours into the game. I'm just unlocking them now after 20 hours and I've grinded and overleveled my characters and got the best equipment available so far. What have you been doing for 60 hours?!
@@darkraven6661985 I’m at 70 now. Grinding. Really getting into the game. Especially when I get stuck. I love it and hate it at the same time. Overall I love RPG’s for this reason. I’ll make progress one way or another darn it. Sometimes the first play throughs are the best because you didn’t always know what to do next. 😂
@@JMrealgamer if you’ve grinded for up to 70 hours and haven’t reached unlocking Classes/vocations then you’ve more than likely completely messed it up for yourself, since there’s a sort of cap when it comes to levelling up your classes and you don’t want to be too overlevelled before that point
@@the_sonic_unity4451 well as long as it’s not like SWKOTOR. Man I was so high levels when I finally got to be a Jedi that I leveled up the Jedi one time and I couldn’t level anymore! 😂 That would be a total bummer if it’s like that.
My first RPG was Dragon Warrior Cobi's Journey on the game boy color. It made me the DQ fan that I am today. There's something special about the role playing genre. I could have a crappy day but in the game, you're the hero and going on epic quests around different landscapes with your party

great job to you and your better half. I am a big final fantasy fan and an avid game collector so over the years i have ended up with many of the dragon warrior games. I have never sat down and played any of them tho. when i was a kid i played dragon warrior 1 and felt it was such a step back from final fantasy 1 that i have never given dragon quest a chance since. Im going to try dragon warrior 1 for my gameboy color today.

Dragon Quest 7 (Dragon Warrior 7 on PS) is my most nostalgic game of my childhood.

I only have DQ5 but I've played 4, 6 and 9. Getting this and 8(next year). This game has one of my favorite things in RPGs: The job changing system.
Right now I'm 40 hours into mine and I love the game. I've played all the dragon quest games except 10 .I'm pretty much just as big of a dragon quest fan as you and I have to say the beginning was tough then after a little while I absolutely love the game . While 3,5, & 8 are my favorite this one might take its place on my dragon quest my favorite list :) also I love your show it's awesome to hear positively about games, anime and just any story you have to tell :) thank you !

Johnny do you think you could do a top 10 Dragon Quest games video some day? I have been an RPG gamer since the SNES days but I have never gotten the chance the play a Dragon Quest game yet. It would be great to hear from you which are the top games in the series to figure out which ones to start with. Thanks for the review, I might have to pick this one up.

Don't forget Dragon Quest Builders in two weeks. Yes, it's very Minecraft-y, but there's a long story there as well. The demo is awesome. :-)

now all we need are DQ 1 - 2 - 3 remakes on a 3DS multicart , Nintendo did one for the Wii in Japan .
Those remakes were already done, though, as they were all remade for the Super Famicom, so they just threw them on a Wii disc, like Nintendo did Super Mario All Stars. They'd have to remake them again for 3DS unless they think people would be satisfied with the GB/GBC versions thrown on a cart, and I doubt they would, so at best you might see those on the 3DS VC unless they're already there (I dont' keep up with what's out on VC)

I am so glad you made this video, because I've never played a single Dragon Quest game. I've heard of the series for years, dating back to the NES when it was Dragon Warrior. I don't really play traditional RPGs or any RPG not named Pokemon. I guess Dragon Quest VII would introduce me to this sort of experience.

As far as the game goes I purchased DW7 the day it come out in the USA for the PS1. I played the game to a point deep into the first disk where the game would not load. (defective disk). I just started playing it again after purchasing it on eBay. I forgot how great this game is, and hard! It's way more challenging then any Final Fantasy game I've played. It might be the most difficult JRPG I've played, and that's a good thing. It's almost like Chrono Trigger but 100 times bigger and harder.
Being visually impaired I can't use the 3DS as the screen is 2 small but it sounds like the improvements are great.
It's sad that this game didn't get the Final Fantasy love in America, as I think this series is as good if not better in terms of gameplay. Maybe not visuals, though Dragon Quest 8 was very good looking. Anyways thanks again for such a great video.

I've dabbled in the series before with 8 on PS2. I picked up DQ Heroes on PS4 and since then have wanted to get really into the series. I bought this day 1 and absolutely love it! I've just hit 25 hours and can change my class finally and loved every second. 80 hours is insane, but I love JRPGs like FF and Tales and can't believe I didn't dive into this game sooner. Thanks for the great content and I hope you've inspired others to give it a try!
