Said it in another video's comments, but it's more appropro here.. I love how every Dragon Quest game keeps the same style and feel. It's like "going home". "Welcome back to the world you know and love", with all the sounds, music, kooky creatures, etc... It's such a comfortable series to play.

I finally just discovered The Dragon Quest series. Instead of seeking a review from IGN, Gamespot, I came directly to the HCG channel as I’ve seen Johnny reference this series time and time again. Needless to say, awesome review as always!
I had gotten stuck at Lonalulu about a year ago and, due to work and school, put DQ 11 away to focus on those. Now being home due to the pandemic, I put the game on again this past weekend and I’ve loved every single minute of it. DQ 8 holds a very special place in my heart, but 11 is just a wonderful game. I love your reviews and hope everyone stays well!
When I was a kid, I rolled my TV cart into the bathroom because I didn't want to stop leveling up Dragon Warrior. Edit: I'm buying a PS4 just to get this game.
One of my favorite RPGs of all time. You are absolutely right finding a new town enemy or secrets is so awesome. I'm blown away. I haven't been this happy with an RPG since ff7 ff10 or persona 3 and 4. What an amazing time to be an RPG fan! Great review!

I'm a big DQ fan myself, and have been looking forward to this game for a long time. Hopefully this will be the game that sparks major interest in the DQ series worldwide, so we can get more of them localized in the future. I can't tell you how much I regret not having the Dragon Quest Monsters games for the 3DS T_T The remakes of the original two and Joker 3, it just felt so unfair.

Same! I think for me is that theres so many other games right now to play & I'm really excited to play XC2 Torna next month that I'm actually relieved a little bit this game got delayed on Switch. I just have to hope when it does release that it'll release during a slow month period so I can make time for it.
You'll probably have to wait until next spring for the Switch release. You'd think Square Enix would have worked harder to get this on the Switch earlier considering that DQ is more associated with Nintendo than Sony.
Yea, considering the lack of major releases on switch this year it would have been nice to get it. I'm happy to wait though because I still just have too much to play.
Preordered! Great review :) My first dragon quest was DQ1 on the famicom, which my Japanese grandmother bought for me. At the age of 8, it absolutely blew my mind. And i’ve been a lifelong fan ever since. Until now, 8 is my favorite game if all time. But i’m ready for a new one!

As someone new to the DQ series, I have to say I ABSOLUTELY LOVE DQXI ! One of the best RPG games I have played in years! I put in over 140hrs - No regrets! The game is a truly beautiful masterpiece imo!
For me my favourites are 8 then 11, mainly because I love the team of 4 dynamic. It really does feel like the four horsemen. I like having the ability to swap characters around in 11 but I like that core four.
I’m finally getting into this series and almost completed DQ XI on my switch. I started looking into purchasing the older games and they’re all going for $150+! Needless to say, I do regret not purchasing these games when they had decent pricing.
Great review, this was my first dragon quest game and i must say it quickly became my game of the year 2018. I played it on the PC and wow, what an amazing ride it was, i hope they port DQ 8 to pc at some point as i dont want to deal with the PS2 version.
Started playing Dragon Quest 11. It is my first Dragon Quest game and I am in love with it. For some reason I cannot put the controller down. From the outside looking in it looks somewhat cheesy but once you get into the world it is so charming. You cannot help but fall in love with it.

I say yes if you like turn base JRPGs, I never played but a few hours of that one remake on 3DS and I only stopped because I'm tired of 3DS even though the gameplay was good. I'm still getting this new one.

I've been playing this since it came out and still have not finished it. Each section of the story I go through is soooo good, its like a great cheese cake that I'm thoroughly enjoying.
No you don't have to Dragon Quest are always separate storys except for the occasional nods to previous games but I would recommend dragon quest 7 and 8 for the 3ds if you like it because they are great.
Once you play this you can play DQ8 sometime down the road and it will feel familiar to you, especially if you switch battle mode to classic. I'd definitely recommend you play DQ8 though, maybe if you have a nice pc you can get the psX emulator and play the PS2 game with zero loading screens and turbo mode lol.
That's awesome you compare it with 8. I have such fond memories of playing 8 and it was my first Dragon Quest game to play since the original on NES when I was a kid.( I got the first game by subscribing to Nintendo Power, which also included a full real, poster size adaptation of the in-game map, every piece of armor and weapons on a large poster as well, and game guide, all for the price of subscription to a yearly magazine!) Also owned 9 on my DS XL but then I saw this and instantly wondered if it was good and how it compares to 8, considering that's it reminded me of right away.
Decided to give this series ago with DQ11. Fell in love with it. Have completed it twice now on PS4 and looking forward to playing it on Xbox in December. Played DQ 1-3 on the Switch and loved them. Except for the difficulty spike at the end of 3, too much grinding required. Can’t wait for DQ 4 onwards to be remastered for the Switch like 1-3 was :) so glad I gave this series a go. It’s hooked a but more than the Tales of series did.
My personal favorites are DQ5 and 8 i've tried to collect every game released in America,im from Mexico City and im waiting for my Edition of Lost Time Great channel btw Saludos desde Mexico! 🤓
80 hours is a little too low of an estimate imho! I'm at 90 and without having a way of being SURE, it doesn't seem that I'm that close to the ending is yet
What I love most about your videos is two things. First you don't have a long obnoxious intro and that you just get right into the content. Second you don't pester the viewer at the beginning or end with the whole "if you like the video please like, share, subscribe" nonsense. Just a guy talking about how much he loves games and I love it.

Eliminating random encounters was the best new mechanic, the insane encounter rate was my sole critique of part 8. I prefer the alchemy pot to the forge, combining objects at random as opposed to requiring a recipe...
After sinking 190 hours and Platinuming the game I came back to here to say I would really really love to see a post-release DQXI Happy Console Gamer video that’s spoiler filled. I’d really like to hear his thoughts on the game while being able to spoil the story. Needless to say I LOVED this game. And this is coming from a new fan that DQXI was the first gane in the series.
Playing the Switch version and wanted to say how much I agree with your views on this diamond. I feel like I know the characters as they are so alive, with Erik and Sylvando being my favourites but I like all the mains. And it’s just a stunning and wonderful experience. I will be sad when I finally finish all the endgame content, what a wonderful game :)
Firstly what a great channel (and I cannot believe I have only just discovered it!); what amazing content and Johnny what an inspiring and interesting guy you are). I am very late to the jrpg party with this game - Dragon Quest XI - as my gateway game; suffice to say I bought it based on this video and am so far completely hooked! My first love will always be western rpgs - especially from BioWare (I even liked Mass Effect Andromeda once it was all patched) - but I now need to delve into Final Fantasy et al and of course Phantasy Star on the Switch 🤘
Your end score never seems to match up with your review... How can you endlessly gush over the game, rank it ABOVE DQ VIII, and only give it a 9/10? I mean what the heck gets a 10/10 or even a 9.5/10, which you couldn't quite do either? I think your score reflects how you truly feel. Fernando Marroquin Fair enough. I just feel like this game probably isn't quite as good as he's making it out to be. I believe his 9/10 score encapsulates his true feeling, not so much the glowing review. But that's just my interpretation. I think its tricky when u have a large audience and you're called the "Happy" Console Gamer, getting too negative is probably not a good idea even if true.

Not smoking anything. Just my interpretation after watching hundreds of his videos. A lot of reviewers are like this though. Review and score most times aren't really consistent with each other. But it is what it is. Not a big deal. Just a damn game review.
I love classical jrpg so much.. Suikoden series, ff series, persona series, breath of fire, legend of legaia series, legend of dragoon, star ocean, jade cocoon, and dq series.. And so far, this is the best for me.. Love the detail, love the story, love the character, and as you say.. I agree this is near perfect jrpg game Cheer..
You single handedly made me really excited for this game. I just came off of playing through DQ8 again, and I was initially put off by the more linear story. But you've sparked my interest, thank you for that.
First time I've had a console bin fifteen years..I'm blown away by this game..getting to grips with the magic systems etc..but what a visual feast and it has so much charm...my 5 year old boy is playing it with me and the bonding experience is awesome!
Thank you for this video. I hate seeing too much before I get things myself, be it game, book or movie. And you are amazing, details, gameplay and info, without making me want to stick my fingers in my ears! This is the first DQ I pre ordered, even though I have been a fan for over 10 years. My old game store would just save me any rpg to be released on the systems I had without being asked. But they had to close last year. Been playing DQ Monsters 2 on the ds recently to help with waiting. Tuesday seems so far away.
😂 Very true, but there are more than a few really excellent themes in this game even in original OST form. He just didn’t pick good ones. Shame the PS4 had to miss out on the orchestral soundtrack.

I am very much looking forward to playing this, i have the digital special edition preordered but i am strongly considering getting the Edition of Lost Time from eBay in the future. Kinda bummed the 3DS version isn’t getting localised but i have the Japanese version if i want to go through that so i am more than happy to wait for the Switch version if SE can work out all the kinks
I'm sure they opted for only localizing the Switch version than doing both it and the 3ds. Maybe Nintendo even wanted it that way so they could push Switch console sales.

I remember playing these games back on Nintendo. I loved the casual , yet hardcore feel of this style. I just started DQ11 and am LOVING it. I love the art style. I love the characters , I love the pacing , I love everything in this game so far. This is definitely what I've been missing out of RPGs since I was younger. I had gotten caught up with more modern , Western RPGs Like Skyrim, Witcher , and more,... But damn ! .... This is where it's at for me.
Sir, I'm sorry but I'm giving you a dislike, you can't possibly be serious when you put a garbage like FF15 in the same tier as Persona 5 and DQ11. FF15 is garbage.
Appreciate the positivity of this guy but I think he's missing a critical side. There's more that can be bad about a game than just bugs. I would give DQ11 an 8/10. Good addition to the franchise but nothing breathtaking. FF15 is below average. It's got some budget pumped into it but just fails in design.
I never thought a week could take so long!!! I preordered Ni No Kuni 2 when it came out and I don't think I was anywhere near this excited! (I haven't finished that game though, so I guess I can pass the time with that...)
I'd really like to reference one of the first things you stated in this video - discovering a new city for the very first time. I remember very well the first time I approached Novigrad in the Witcher 3 for the first time. THAT was a marvel to be hold, and I was in awe. The city was enormous, had it's own style and atmosphere, and had a lot of quests, a lot to do, and a lot to explore! This game didn't present their cities in the same way. And when roaming 'round cities such as Heliodor, it's painfully obvious that they draw heavy inspirations from earlier JRPG games. I recon this is a design choice to honor the earlier installations in both this series and the JRPG genre - which this game obviously actively do in many aspects! But it just doesn't play as well anymore, in my opinion, when you have contenders such as the Witcher 3. I enjoy the game, tho, and will finish it.
I've also been playing DQ/DW for 30 years and your picks are the same as mine. 4 and 8 are amazing. The chapter system in 4. The best. I can't wait until the 4th!
The hype is real. I owned the original Dragon Warrior but was so young I couldnt even read. Who knew 30 years later Id be playing the 11th installment lol Edit: And holllly shit its one of my favorite games ever what do ya know...I havent played much of the others. Only about 20 hours of 8. 2 of 5. And nothing of 1 30 years ago. But that aside. Its rounding out to be my favorite game of all time. No shit. Up there with Bloodborne, Nier Automata, Ocarina of Time, Wow. I mean Im putting it that high. I need to know. What should I play next in the series? Please for the love of god someone recommend something.

Hey it took over 10 years for us to get a new full council release on par to DQVIII (9 doesn’t count because it was only on DS and 10 was online only) but it really shows that they took the time to really amp it up. I’m just glad it wasn’t like P5 and FFXV where they announce it and it takes years to get to us. (KH3 turned into this too) I’d rather a game gets announced when it’s almost done and DQXI was handled very well.
I just beat the game and its a 9/10 one of the best monster fighter beside Pokemon and Digimon. Wow if your hesitant don't be I put around 250 hours (Hard mode) and had a blast every second. Def get your money worth with a classic Western RPG that simple yet very deep and satisfying. It's open world but has a clear direction on every location so you won't feel overwhelm with too many thing to do. The story just keep getting better and better AND BETTER my god. There so much content even after you beat the game there still the post game which is amazing. I smiled at the end cuz it was truely a fun adventure. 9/10 and I never played a Dragon quest game but this is a perfect starting point to be a HUGE FAN. LOVE THE GAME 💘

I have such fond memories of playing 8 and it was my first Dragon Quest game to play since the original on NES when I was a kid.( I got the first game by subscribing to Nintendo Power, which also included a full real, poster size adaptation of the in-game map, every piece of armor and weapons on a large poster as well, and game guide, all for the price of subscription to a yearly magazine!) Also owned 9 on my DS XL but then I saw this and instantly wondered if it was good and how it compares to 8, considering that's it reminded me of right away.

Decided to give this series ago with DQ11. Fell in love with it. Have completed it twice now on PS4 and looking forward to playing it on Xbox in December. Played DQ 1-3 on the Switch and loved them. Except for the difficulty spike at the end of 3, too much grinding required. Can’t wait for DQ 4 onwards to be remastered for the Switch like 1-3 was :) so glad I gave this series a go. It’s hooked a but more than the Tales of series did.
My personal favorites are DQ5 and 8 i've tried to collect every game released in America,im from Mexico City and im waiting for my Edition of Lost Time

What I love most about your videos is two things. First you don't have a long obnoxious intro and that you just get right into the content. Second you don't pester the viewer at the beginning or end with the whole "if you like the video please like, share, subscribe" nonsense. Just a guy talking about how much he loves games and I love it.

I'm glad you can actually jump. Struck me as strange in games like this that you couldn't jump. A small thing, but it adds up.
Eliminating random encounters was the best new mechanic, the insane encounter rate was my sole critique of part 8. I prefer the alchemy pot to the forge, combining objects at random as opposed to requiring a recipe...
I really need to buy a ps4, I had hoped it was coming out on the vita or 3ds as well.... As always a great video and great review.

After sinking 190 hours and Platinuming the game I came back to here to say I would really really love to see a post-release DQXI Happy Console Gamer video that’s spoiler filled. I’d really like to hear his thoughts on the game while being able to spoil the story.
Needless to say I LOVED this game. And this is coming from a new fan that DQXI was the first gane in the series.
Playing the Switch version and wanted to say how much I agree with your views on this diamond.
I feel like I know the characters as they are so alive, with Erik and Sylvando being my favourites but I like all the mains. And it’s just a stunning and wonderful experience.
I will be sad when I finally finish all the endgame content, what a wonderful game :)
One thing I’m very happy about is that in the Switch version, when you hit trees or ores, you don’t have to pick each one up by itself.
Firstly what a great channel (and I cannot believe I have only just discovered it!); what amazing content and Johnny what an inspiring and interesting guy you are). I am very late to the jrpg party with this game - Dragon Quest XI - as my gateway game; suffice to say I bought it based on this video and am so far completely hooked! My first love will always be western rpgs - especially from BioWare (I even liked Mass Effect Andromeda once it was all patched) - but I now need to delve into Final Fantasy et al and of course Phantasy Star on the Switch 🤘
Your end score never seems to match up with your review... How can you endlessly gush over the game, rank it ABOVE DQ VIII, and only give it a 9/10? I mean what the heck gets a 10/10 or even a 9.5/10, which you couldn't quite do either?
I think your score reflects how you truly feel. Come on Johnny, you should mention more of the negatives to balance out the review.

Fernando Marroquin Fair enough. I just feel like this game probably isn't quite as good as he's making it out to be. I believe his 9/10 score encapsulates his true feeling, not so much the glowing review. But that's just my interpretation. I think its tricky when u have a large audience and you're called the "Happy" Console Gamer, getting too negative is probably not a good idea even if true.

Not smoking anything. Just my interpretation after watching hundreds of his videos. A lot of reviewers are like this though. Review and score most times aren't really consistent with each other. But it is what it is. Not a big deal. Just a damn game review.

And so far, this is the best for me..

I personally hate that all in game music is Midi because they had licensing issues, c'mon man, it could have been the perfect game
Well the soundtrack isn't that important when it comes to the gameplay.
First time I've had a console bin fifteen years..I'm blown away by this game..getting to grips with the magic systems etc..but what a visual feast and it has so much charm...my 5 year old boy is playing it with me and the bonding experience is awesome!

And you are amazing, details, gameplay and info, without making me want to stick my fingers in my ears! This is the first DQ I pre ordered, even though I have been a fan for over 10 years. My old game store would just save me any rpg to be released on the systems I had without being asked. But they had to close last year. Been playing DQ Monsters 2 on the ds recently to help with waiting. Tuesday seems so far away.

😂 Very true, but there are more than a few really excellent themes in this game even in original OST form. He just didn’t pick good ones. Shame the PS4 had to miss out on the orchestral soundtrack.
I love that they finally went with active time battles! I haven't been this glued to a game since Morrowind, Chronocross, or Suikoden3.

I am very much looking forward to playing this, i have the digital special edition preordered but i am strongly considering getting the Edition of Lost Time from eBay in the future. Kinda bummed the 3DS version isn’t getting localised but i have the Japanese version if i want to go through that so i am more than happy to wait for the Switch version if SE can work out all the kinks
I'm sure they opted for only localizing the Switch version than doing both it and the 3ds. Maybe Nintendo even wanted it that way so they could push Switch console sales.

I remember playing these games back on Nintendo. I loved the casual , yet hardcore feel of this style.
I just started DQ11 and am LOVING it. I love the art style. I love the characters , I love the pacing , I love everything in this game so far. This is definitely what I've been missing out of RPGs since I was younger. I had gotten caught up with more modern , Western RPGs Like Skyrim, Witcher , and more,... But damn ! .... This is where it's at for me.

There's more that can be bad about a game than just bugs. I would give DQ11 an 8/10. Good addition to the franchise but nothing breathtaking.
FF15 is below average. It's got some budget pumped into it but just fails in design.

I never thought a week could take so long!!! I preordered Ni No Kuni 2 when it came out and I don't think I was anywhere near this excited! (I haven't finished that game though, so I guess I can pass the time with that...)
I'd really like to reference one of the first things you stated in this video - discovering a new city for the very first time.
I remember very well the first time I approached Novigrad in the Witcher 3 for the first time. THAT was a marvel to be hold, and I was in awe. The city was enormous, had it's own style and atmosphere, and had a lot of quests, a lot to do, and a lot to explore!
This game didn't present their cities in the same way. And when roaming 'round cities such as Heliodor, it's painfully obvious that they draw heavy inspirations from earlier JRPG games.
I recon this is a design choice to honor the earlier installations in both this series and the JRPG genre - which this game obviously actively do in many aspects! But it just doesn't play as well anymore, in my opinion, when you have contenders such as the Witcher 3.
I enjoy the game, tho, and will finish it.

Hey it took over 10 years for us to get a new full council release on par to DQVIII (9 doesn’t count because it was only on DS and 10 was online only) but it really shows that they took the time to really amp it up. I’m just glad it wasn’t like P5 and FFXV where they announce it and it takes years to get to us. (KH3 turned into this too) I’d rather a game gets announced when it’s almost done and DQXI was handled very well.

I just beat the game and its a 9/10 one of the best monster fighter beside Pokemon and Digimon. Wow if your hesitant don't be I put around 250 hours (Hard mode) and had a blast every second. Def get your money worth with a classic Western RPG that simple yet very deep and satisfying. It's open world but has a clear direction on every location so you won't feel overwhelm with too many thing to do. The story just keep getting better and better AND BETTER my god. There so much content even after you beat the game there still the post game which is amazing. I smiled at the end cuz it was truely a fun adventure. 9/10 and I never played a Dragon quest game but this is a perfect starting point to be a HUGE FAN. LOVE THE GAME 💘
