Said it in another video's comments, but it's more appropro here.. I love how every Dragon Quest game keeps the same style and feel. It's like "going home". "Welcome back to the world you know and love", with all the sounds, music, kooky creatures, etc... It's such a comfortable series to play.

I finally just discovered The Dragon Quest series. Instead of seeking a review from IGN, Gamespot, I came directly to the HCG channel as I’ve seen Johnny reference this series time and time again. Needless to say, awesome review as always!
I just finished DQ11 after about 80hrs and I can’t stop watching your videos on the series. It really feels like I’m just hanging out with a buddy talking about one of my favorite games :)
When I was a kid, I rolled my TV cart into the bathroom because I didn't want to stop leveling up Dragon Warrior. Edit: I'm buying a PS4 just to get this game.
I love how you’re willing to admit when newer games surpass games from the past, like you did with BotW. Not clouded by nostalgia glasses but willing to take a realistic look at things. As far as I’m concermed, any game that expands the lore of Hyrule meets the qualifications of being a great Zelda game. I know a lot of people don’t want to admit that stuff from their childhood has been surpassed, but BOTW is the best Zelda game because it accomplishes what the creator wanted the original to do. BOTW’s Hyrule is so dense and filled to the brim with life that it’s very easy to get lost exploring, and this is an amazing feeling that none of the other Zelda games ever captured.
Kevin Strom I highly disagree. I don’t mean “life” in the sense of there being a bunch of NPCs; to be quite frank, I find NPCs to be boring. Hyrule is full of “life” in the sense that it is a living and dynamic world. I’ve put in 200 hours and I still go back every now and then to discover more that the world has to offer.
This was my very first HCG video I've watched and I've continued to watch everyone to date and YES I have went back and watched many older ones by far my favorite UA-cam channel ❤
Yeah guys keep the hype going. Imported the Japanese version and it’s absolutely stellar. DONT STOP the game after you hit credits tho; there’s 30 hours worth of post STORY content that actually continues the story in a few major ways.
One of my favorite parts of this game are that they give the option to go back to the original line up aesthetic in combat if you don't like the open circle one. Since you can't actually move around to avoid attacks you aren't losing any strategy. Love that they let you pick how you wanted it presented
I got into Dragon Quest out of sheer boredom and just looking for something new. I found Dragon Quest VIII for PS2 pretty cheap at GameStop and was addicted to the series ever since.
I love this series so much. I am so happy to see you play this I know how big a fan you are of this series. It will be very hard to not to purchase this versus waiting for switch version. It might be a multi system purchase. God this looks good.
Same! I think for me is that theres so many other games right now to play & I'm really excited to play XC2 Torna next month that I'm actually relieved a little bit this game got delayed on Switch. I just have to hope when it does release that it'll release during a slow month period so I can make time for it.
You'll probably have to wait until next spring for the Switch release. You'd think Square Enix would have worked harder to get this on the Switch earlier considering that DQ is more associated with Nintendo than Sony.
Yea, considering the lack of major releases on switch this year it would have been nice to get it. I'm happy to wait though because I still just have too much to play.
One of my favorite RPGs of all time. You are absolutely right finding a new town enemy or secrets is so awesome. I'm blown away. I haven't been this happy with an RPG since ff7 ff10 or persona 3 and 4. What an amazing time to be an RPG fan! Great review!
I love the DQ series, played all games up to this point. But i've honestly never been more excited for a new entry than i am for XI. I was blown away by how amazing it looked the very first time i saw it years ago. Can't wait to dig in deep, i probably won't get much sleep in the next few weeks.

I'm a big DQ fan myself, and have been looking forward to this game for a long time. I can't tell you how much I regret not having the Dragon Quest Monsters games for the 3DS T_T The remakes of the original two and Joker 3, it just felt so unfair.

Preordered! Great review :) My first dragon quest was DQ1 on the famicom, which my Japanese grandmother bought for me. At the age of 8, it absolutely blew my mind. And i’ve been a lifelong fan ever since. Until now, 8 is my favorite game if all time. But i’m ready for a new one!

Started playing Dragon Quest 11. It is my first Dragon Quest game and I am in love with it. For some reason I cannot put the controller down. From the outside looking in it looks somewhat cheesy but once you get into the world it is so charming. You cannot help but fall in love with it.

For me my favourites are 8 then 11, mainly because I love the team of 4 dynamic. It really does feel like the four horsemen. I like having the ability to swap characters around in 11 but I like that core four.
This is the kind of review I live for. A passionate review from someone who really cares about the series. Someone who can say "this is how I feel about a new game compared to DQ8." That's the kind of insight I want since that's the kind of comparison I'm going to be making when playing it. Also I do love how the DQ games just embrace British/Scottish kind of voices. It just gives these games a different kind of charm.

No you don't have to Dragon Quest are always separate storys except for the occasional nods to previous games but I would recommend dragon quest 7 and 8 for the 3ds if you like it because they are great.
Once you play this you can play DQ8 sometime down the road and it will feel familiar to you, especially if you switch battle mode to classic. I'd definitely recommend you play DQ8 though, maybe if you have a nice pc you can get the psX emulator and play the PS2 game with zero loading screens and turbo mode lol.
This channel has quite possibly sold me on the Dragon Quest series. I’m a long time FF series lover and JRPG fan from when I was a wee lad. This series has been tickling my fancy from a distance for too long. I think now is the time to jump in, face first. Nice work with the vids! Keep it up.
As someone new to the DQ series, I have to say I ABSOLUTELY LOVE DQXI ! One of the best RPG games I have played in years! I put in over 140hrs - No regrets! The game is a truly beautiful masterpiece imo!
I live in Japan. I have played DQ11 for 80 hours last year. I am no doubt this game is awesome.but music is not good as much as previous DQ series achieved. I was very disappointed with DQ 11 music..
I say yes if you like turn base JRPGs, I never played but a few hours of that one remake on 3DS and I only stopped because I'm tired of 3DS even though the gameplay was good. I'm still getting this new one.
I can really see the passion you have for this game and just games in general. If you opened up your own gaming store, i know for sure you would do very well in it. Firstly what a great channel (and I cannot believe I have only just discovered it!); what amazing content and Johnny what an inspiring and interesting guy you are). I am very late to the jrpg party with this game - Dragon Quest XI - as my gateway game; suffice to say I bought it based on this video and am so far completely hooked! My first love will always be western rpgs - especially from BioWare (I even liked Mass Effect Andromeda once it was all patched) - but I now need to delve into Final Fantasy et al and of course Phantasy Star on the Switch 🤘
😂 Very true, but there are more than a few really excellent themes in this game even in original OST form. He just didn’t pick good ones. Shame the PS4 had to miss out on the orchestral soundtrack.

Great review, this was my first dragon quest game and i must say it quickly became my game of the year 2018. I played it on the PC and wow, what an amazing ride it was, i hope they port DQ 8 to pc at some point as i dont want to deal with the PS2 version.
Still playing this game whenever I get a little discouraged I come back and watch this video and pick up another 10 hours or so of gameplay haha your enthusiasm is contagious. Just got the 6 orbs and I'm on my way to the next adventure so far this game has blew away my expectations by far I hope we can get games like this pedigree for many years to come.
80 hours is a little too low of an estimate imho! I'm at 90 and without having a way of being SURE, it doesn't seem that I'm that close to the ending is yet

I’m finally getting into this series and almost completed DQ XI on my switch. I started looking into purchasing the older games and they’re all going for $150+! Needless to say, I do regret not purchasing these games when they had decent pricing.
C'mon, even the staunchest DQ fans coincide that using MIDI music in a 2018 PS4 game was inexcusable. At least that much should be noted. Not to take from the rest of the game which looks amazing but to answer the question "how can they make DQ better after XI?" Lets start with better quality music. VIII already had an amazingly updated OST specially done for the west with an orquestra back in 2005 on PS2! Theres no excuse not to do it with XI in 2018 (or for XII for that matter).
Exactly. I rarely comment on youtube but the music in this game is honestly quite shocking. Disappointing that it's not an orchestral soundtrack, but it sounds like generic MIDI and poorly done. It could have still been a synthesized soundtrack and sounded really good, this shows no effort. Saturn, Playstation and N64 could easily do better than this, and they did, particularly the Playstation and Saturn, theres alot of music that I bet people are unaware aren't CD tracks. Even if it wasn't using native hardware it could be pre-recorded tracks using a half decent keyboard let alone a good one like a Tyros. Or just midi keyboard with Cakewalk plugins, or even logic pro. These are accessible to anyone, there really is no excuse for how bad the music in DQXI sounds. Could do a better job with music maker on playstation imo lol
Fans didn't appreciate it with VIII its a favorite but it definitely didn't get the recognition it deserved then, why would enix go the extra mile now.

Fernando Marroquin Fair enough. I just feel like this game probably isn't quite as good as he's making it out to be. I believe his 9/10 score encapsulates his true feeling, not so much the glowing review. But that's just my interpretation. I think its tricky when u have a large audience and you're called the "Happy" Console Gamer, getting too negative is probably not a good idea even if true.

Not smoking anything. Just my interpretation after watching hundreds of his videos. A lot of reviewers are like this though. Review and score most times aren't really consistent with each other. But it is what it is. Not a big deal. Just a damn game review.
I found about your channel by searching about the Dragon Quest series. A few weeks later i watched a lot of your videos. Your Passion for games (specially the DQ series) has convinced me to buy this game. I am not a RPG guy but this looks amazing.
Absolutely wonderful game. Harkens back to the glory days of the genre. This game, along with Persona 5 prove that the JRPG is still very much alive in 2018. While I'm playing this game, it literally puts a smile on my face. I had lofty, maybe unrealistic expectations for this game. But I've learned to expect greatness from Dragon Quest. DQ XI exceeds all of my expectations and totally blows me away. I cannot gush about this game enough. I haven't been this drawn into a game in a very long time. 10/10

Happy Questmas man! I am very much looking forward to playing this, i have the digital special edition preordered but i am strongly considering getting the Edition of Lost Time from eBay in the future. Kinda bummed the 3DS version isn’t getting localised but i have the Japanese version if i want to go through that so i am more than happy to wait for the Switch version if SE can work out all the kinks
I'm sure they opted for only localizing the Switch version than doing both it and the 3ds. Maybe Nintendo even wanted it that way so they could push Switch console sales.
I've been playing this since it came out and still have not finished it. Each section of the story I go through is soooo good, its like a great cheese cake that I'm thoroughly enjoying.

This, yes. Botw really doesnt surpass the older Zelda games. I think the hype was bigger than the actual experience.

oh man. I really want to play this game. I’ve never played a real Dragon Quest game. only builders, which I love. this game seems like a lot of fun.
it is totally different from DQ builder tho, it is pure JRPG.

For me my favourites are 8 then 11, mainly because I love the team of 4 dynamic. It really does feel like the four horsemen. I like having the ability to swap characters around in 11 but I like that core four.

Also I do love how the DQ games just embrace British/Scottish kind of voices. It just gives these games a different kind of charm.

No you don't have to Dragon Quest are always separate storys except for the occasional nods to previous games but I would recommend dragon quest 7 and 8 for the 3ds if you like it because they are great.

Once you play this you can play DQ8 sometime down the road and it will feel familiar to you, especially if you switch battle mode to classic. I'd definitely recommend you play DQ8 though, maybe if you have a nice pc you can get the psX emulator and play the PS2 game with zero loading screens and turbo mode lol.
This channel has quite possibly sold me on the Dragon Quest series. I’m a long time FF series lover and JRPG fan from when I was a wee lad. This series has been tickling my fancy from a distance for too long. I think now is the time to jump in, face first. Nice work with the vids! Keep it up.

As someone new to the DQ series, I have to say I ABSOLUTELY LOVE DQXI ! One of the best RPG games I have played in years!

I live in Japan. I have played DQ11 for 80 hours last year. I am no doubt this game is awesome.but music is not good as much as previous DQ series achieved. I was very disappointed with DQ 11 music..

I say yes if you like turn base JRPGs, I never played but a few hours of that one remake on 3DS and I only stopped because I'm tired of 3DS even though the gameplay was good. I'm still getting this new one.

Firstly what a great channel (and I cannot believe I have only just discovered it!); what amazing content and Johnny what an inspiring and interesting guy you are). I am very late to the jrpg party with this game - Dragon Quest XI - as my gateway game; suffice to say I bought it based on this video and am so far completely hooked! My first love will always be western rpgs - especially from BioWare (I even liked Mass Effect Andromeda once it was all patched) - but I now need to delve into Final Fantasy et al and of course Phantasy Star on the Switch 🤘

😂 Very true, but there are more than a few really excellent themes in this game even in original OST form. He just didn’t pick good ones. Shame the PS4 had to miss out on the orchestral soundtrack.

Great review, this was my first dragon quest game and i must say it quickly became my game of the year 2018. I played it on the PC and wow, what an amazing ride it was, i hope they port DQ 8 to pc at some point as i dont want to deal with the PS2 version.

Still playing this game whenever I get a little discouraged I come back and watch this video and pick up another 10 hours or so of gameplay haha your enthusiasm is contagious. Just got the 6 orbs and I'm on my way to the next adventure so far this game has blew away my expectations by far I hope we can get games like this pedigree for many years to come.

80 hours is a little too low of an estimate imho! I'm at 90 and without having a way of being SURE, it doesn't seem that I'm that close to the ending is yet

I’m finally getting into this series and almost completed DQ XI on my switch. I started looking into purchasing the older games and they’re all going for $150+! Needless to say, I do regret not purchasing these games when they had decent pricing.
C'mon, even the staunchest DQ fans coincide that using MIDI music in a 2018 PS4 game was inexcusable. At least that much should be noted. Not to take from the rest of the game which looks amazing but to answer the question "how can they make DQ better after XI?" Lets start with better quality music. VIII already had an amazingly updated OST specially done for the west with an orquestra back in 2005 on PS2! Theres no excuse not to do it with XI in 2018 (or for XII for that matter).
Exactly. I rarely comment on youtube but the music in this game is honestly quite shocking. Disappointing that it's not an orchestral soundtrack, but it sounds like generic MIDI and poorly done. It could have still been a synthesized soundtrack and sounded really good, this shows no effort. Saturn, Playstation and N64 could easily do better than this, and they did, particularly the Playstation and Saturn, theres alot of music that I bet people are unaware aren't CD tracks. Even if it wasn't using native hardware it could be pre-recorded tracks using a half decent keyboard let alone a good one like a Tyros. Or just midi keyboard with Cakewalk plugins, or even logic pro. These are accessible to anyone, there really is no excuse for how bad the music in DQXI sounds. Could do a better job with music maker on playstation imo lol
It's not MIDI, it's Synthesized. But I do agree that the music should've been orchestrated.
Fans didn't appreciate it with VIII its a favorite but it definitely didn't get the recognition it deserved then, why would enix go the extra mile now.
Yeah I think only the intro is Orchestrated?
Blame the composer, he worries about his work being pirated or something. So you only get to hear an orchestral version in his concerts.

Your end score never seems to match up with your review... How can you endlessly gush over the game, rank it ABOVE DQ VIII, and only give it a 9/10? I mean what the heck gets a 10/10 or even a 9.5/10, which you couldn't quite do either?

Fernando Marroquin Fair enough. I just feel like this game probably isn't quite as good as he's making it out to be. I believe his 9/10 score encapsulates his true feeling, not so much the glowing review. But that's just my interpretation. I think its tricky when u have a large audience and you're called the "Happy" Console Gamer, getting too negative is probably not a good idea even if true.

Not smoking anything. Just my interpretation after watching hundreds of his videos. A lot of reviewers are like this though. Review and score most times aren't really consistent with each other. But it is what it is. Not a big deal. Just a damn game review.

Absolutely wonderful game. Harkens back to the glory days of the genre. This game, along with Persona 5 prove that the JRPG is still very much alive in 2018. While I'm playing this game, it literally puts a smile on my face. I had lofty, maybe unrealistic expectations for this game. But I've learned to expect greatness from Dragon Quest. DQ XI exceeds all of my expectations and totally blows me away. I cannot gush about this game enough. I haven't been this drawn into a game in a very long time. 10/10

I am very much looking forward to playing this, i have the digital special edition preordered but i am strongly considering getting the Edition of Lost Time from eBay in the future. Kinda bummed the 3DS version isn’t getting localised but i have the Japanese version if i want to go through that so i am more than happy to wait for the Switch version if SE can work out all the kinks
I'm sure they opted for only localizing the Switch version than doing both it and the 3ds. Maybe Nintendo even wanted it that way so they could push Switch console sales.
I've been playing this since it came out and still have not finished it. Each section of the story I go through is soooo good, its like a great cheese cake that I'm thoroughly enjoying.
