  • @Maritinylibrary

I think that Linda started the whole thing with good intentions but she doesn't really grasp the responsibility of it all. All the 'hate' she gets it's just people pointing out the fact that she IS a public figure. She is putting herself and her content out there so she has a responbility to make sure it's not harmful and misleading. And i don't think Linda really came into UA-cam realizing that or thinking she would have to have these things in mind. But in the end, when you put yourself out there you will receive criticism.

I worry that because recovering from her ed is the content that got views, she almost has to deliberately stay disordered so that she has content to make about it. Ive seen this pattern happen to lots of other people as well. They get a large following of a specific audience and are pressured to mould to what works well. So sad :(

    • @lexienicole6425

she no longer eats "disordered." she's finally eating when she's hungry and not being restrictive like she once was. her habits may be different than yours or mine or any typical adult, but they are what works for her to feel happy and healthy in this part of her journey through life. I do agree that people sometimes stay ill for the attention of their illness, though, and that is a very sad thing to watch.

the reason why i stopped watching linda's videos was because of how often she contradicted herself. she made it seem like she was now happy with her body and her relationship with food was good but in the next video, she would say she was incredibly unhappy. and it just felt like i didn't know what to believe and i wasn't sure what i was learning from the videos or even what she was learning.

So true.. she is just still recovering herself but that is just not clear enough.. which is not helping i think.. don’t really know if watching someone elses recovery as how to do it yourself and as advice ever helps.. but I do think her audience does that a lot. @@thatgirl2763 She's not telling the truth. She's being manipulative. And I don't know why some of you hellbent on pushing this narrative that her constantly fluctuating from one extreme to the next, in short spans of time, is her telling the truth. We all have our ups and downs but going from epiphany to unhappiness and loathing and back again means that no actual growth took place. Just a cycle of depression and dysfunction. And she needs to get real help, not just continue to cycle.

Linda has a very problematic cycle with her videos, in the sense that when she posts a video talking about how happy she is with her body and how eating is helping her heal. Although she'll then contradict herself in a new video posted a few months after, saying how she wasn't healthy or happy????

So one potential thing that you didn’t mention in this is that when she said she received “hate” from Greg Doucette’s video is that it might refer to hate she potentially received from fans of Greg and people who watched his video. I can see her not being prepared for an influx of negative or harsh and critical comments as a result of the video itself. I’ve watched Greg’s videos before and he does come off as a bit bombastic even if his criticism is mostly constructive and valuable. His style is definitely on the side of “cold hard truth” though (and sometimes dismissive) and I could see that potentially the type of audience whom that sort of style appeals to may then regurgitate his message in an even harsher and more hateful sounding manner with less nuance over to Linda.
Also thank you for once again speaking about mental health in such a considerate and heartfelt way.

  • @Chocolatepuppy21

As someone who loved Linda’s channel when she first started it, I think a big part of her issue is that she blew up WAY too fast. She went from making videos about her complicated relationship with food and exercise to being part of the fitness influencer space in a very short time. Being so young and still figuring things out, she’s now expected to be a guru, so now her videos are a confusing mixture of spoken-word poetry about loving yourself, and spurts of distressing honesty about how she is STILL struggling. Because OF COURSE she’s still struggling, recovering from EDs and exercise addiction is often a life-long experience, but influencers are expected to have the answers.
And now she’s adding on the layer of being unable to healthily handle her fame and success and the “hate” that can come with that. Her videos started making me very uncomfortable very quickly and unfortunately I think she’s fallen into blaming others for not “getting” her content rather than realizing that she needs to take a step back for her own good.

The thing that bothers me most about people like Linda and Blogilates (apart from how they will occasionally push wrong or even harmful information) is how they react to constructive criticism as either "I get so much hate" or "well I'm trying my best 🤷‍♀️". Especially when it seems that they get so down on themselves because of the "hate." If they viewed videos like yours as constructive, they might not take it so hard (hopefully).
This applies to male creators too, but they don't really show their vulnerable side when they are reacting to "hate" so it's hard to say it's one to one.

I feel like maybe it will be the best if content creator understand that most criticism are not personal, this applies to most people in general, that our work (content in the case of youtuber) are in some way separate from who we are, criticism on our work does not equal to criticism on ourselves. But I guess it can be hard to distinguish that for creators that put so much of themselves to their work.

I don't think they are genuine about their feelings about the "hate" they get. They probably realise most of the hate is actually constructive criticism but they don't plan on applying any of the advice because with how things are right now they make money, they get a lot of views and subs. They are catering to a specific type of delusional audience that doesn't want to take accountability and want beautiful, fit women preaching "body positivity" "good relationship with food" "you can get my body with minimal effort with the easy excercises I share here" so thst they can feel better about themselves. These creators know their audience too well, they won't change anything about their content and keep pretentiously crying about the hate

I am 56 now and thankfully my parents found a great therapist. At the time, there were no real resources to deal with this. I am happy to see people like you and others, who use their platform to promote physical and mental health versus trying to attain some unrealistic goal of a "perfect body" and comparing themselves to dishonest people who use filters and PEDs. The part where she says “it’s annoying because I thought I WAS taking care of myself for the last year” is so interesting because I’ve found myself saying this multiple times. Having similar frustrations. The funny thing is that it’s not…. Linear. Your needs change based on your circumstances at the moment. She probably WAS taking care of herself, for what she needed at that time; and then her needs evolved or changed entirely. Change is hard, especially when you feel like one particular way is the “best” way. When you WANT it to be the best way because you got into a groove with it. It would make sense that she feels frustrated by that, and jumps from one challenge/routine to the next, being consistently inconsistent because she wants there to be a best way to feel her best. she’s looking for the perfect way, and she gets annoyed that one particular route isn’t the most optimal. Therefore, she gets confused and frustrated, hops around on her eternal search, and unfortunately she drags her audience along with it. Saying she “needs more time with this” is true in a way, but the act of taking care of yourself is not a destination. It’s a journey. You don’t get to a place where you go, “alright cool, I’ve taken care of myself! I’m done and I’m perfectly happy!” As annoying as it is sometimes, that’s not how it works haha. It takes your whole life; and that’s okay. Taking care of yourself looks different at different times, and I get why that can be frustrating. Sometimes I wish that I could just need the same things all the time and be perfectly happy, but that’s not how humans work. I hope she can adopt more of that journey mindset, because speaking from experience, trying to get to a final spot of “taking care of yourself” doesn’t exist. Ride the waves, embrace the shifting. Overall, I think some of this comes from her still being so young. You want a final solution sometimes, and you want it as fast as possible. I think that reflects in her videos. I feel like if she approached her content with more patience and forgiveness for herself like I’ve discussed, it could be less confusing and ACTUALLY relatable.

I discovered Linda’s channel just when I discovered that I had had eating disorder for +10 years. I have been in the recovery process for a year now. I have felt her content repetition as well. But it made my recovery journey easier tbh. Because recovery is not a straight line and breaking the years of habits is difficult. I still am not free of all ed thoughts. And in the beginning, it was harder to repel those thoughts. Linda’s repetitive content and her falling back and forth journey helped me to see that my own recovery is not only going up. As she was talking about her fluctuations, my fluctuations felt okay too and I found strength to continue healing. Now that I have slightly better relationship with food and don’t restrict anymore, I don’t watch her eating videos with the same interest because of repetition. I enjoy her content about self-care, studying, prioritizing herself and bettering her relationships now. I hope she will make these topics her focus while hopefully really recovering.

I feel as though she has only really recovered weight wise, and unfortunately, if you get told you are at a healthy weight you are automatically healthy, Linda is not as thin as someone like as Lily Sabri, so she gets to say she is recovered, and so no one will call her out as much as someone who is very very thin. However, Linda seems to have a disordered mindset, and has mentioned before she excersises a lot everyday, and in one video has said she has never taken a day off. That is not recovered, and she should not portray it as such. Furthermore, she has made it out with videos like what she has even cried while excersising, and I don’t think that is healthy. Also, maybe this is just me, and I am someone who is triggered easily, but the fact way she vividly describes food and moans and is just so emotional, it’s very offsetting to me. I don’t feel like so much of her day revolving around food is healthy, in her shirts her life mostly seems to be around good and exercise, but she seems not to have a lot of other interests, maybe it’s just me, but I feel like she is a disordered person portraying herself as recovered. Recovery for some isn’t a lifelong thing, but for many it is something they decide on every day, and Linda has made it seem she is the former, when I honestly do not think she is, but that is my opinion, and we are all entitled to our own

Before I cut some people out of my life that took advantage of this people pleaser side of me. I kind of lost myself for a while and had to ask myself a lot of diffecult questions, had to figure out who I was, what I wanted to do. . If you don't have a strong grasp of who you are and what your morals and values are its easy to get persuaded by others. Personally Lindas content is not my cup of tea, to much inspirational buzzwords and to little actual substance. Everyone's allowed to grow and do better but for that you kinda need to take some constructive criticism on board. Hi Harry!
I've got a question about balancing mental health and fitness.
I'm currently going through some unfortunate life circumstances that have caused my mental health to just spiral wildly. As in, can't eat, can't sleep, don't want to get out of bed, the works. You get it.
On the other hand, I was finally starting to see some progress in the gym right before this started (hooray for growing little baby muscles!)
My question is, at a time like this, would you still recommend trying to get to the gym and get my normal training in if possible? I feel like I might benefit from the routine and sense of control I get from maintaining a training schedule, at least on the days when I'm able to work up the gumption to go out into the world. But on the other hand, I don't want to add any additional stress on my body during a time when I'm not necessarily able to take the best care of it.
Also, I know you've said that it's easier to maintain muscles than it is to build them, but mine are just so new and fragile that I feel like they might need some extra nourishment. 😅 Little newborn baby muscles.
Thank you for doing what you do! Your content has been so helpful for me. ❤

      Hi Emily!
First of all, I am sorry you are going through an unfortunate time, although know we are all here to support you! ❤️
Keep in mind this is my own personal answer, and others may answer differently, I find it very easy to just stay in bed, isolate myself, not do much of anything when I'm not feeling at my best mentally. Oftentimes you have to take the approach of "Opposite Action" during these times, and force yourself to do the opposite of your instincts, otherwise it is very easy to just stay stuck and potentially allow things to get worse. Therefore, I would encourage trying to keep to a routine, even if it may not exactly be the same or as intensive as the one before, since getting yourself moving and taking action may contribute to you being able to more effectively address other issues in your life (in addition to mood enhancing benefits of exercise).
Even just a little bit will help you maintain recent gains, and give you the foundation to progress when you are in the place to do so!

      Hi Emily.❤️❤️
I am sorry to hear about your mental health and I struggle too sometimes with isolation and have no energy or mood to do anything. Something that helps me is to take baby steps everyday to improve, whether if it is eating something, doing some self care or something that you need to do. Be kind to yourself and take anything, literally anything no matter how small you did as a win! If you eaten something today, that's a win. If have gotten out of bed for an hour, that's a win. Exercise today, that is a win.
And congrats with building baby muscles.🥳🥳 I am also starting to build muscle and the term "baby muscles" is definitely the word I would use to describe it! 😁😁

It honestly can be very challenging trying to balance what you want to make vs what you think other people want out of your content. UA-cam is hard to navigate that way, I feel that. But like you're discussing, what's most important when you're in any position of public influence is to be as informed, transparent and genuine as possible. Not only that, but also being as consistent as you can. I agree, from what we see I think Linda gets stuck in the mindset of "oh man I gotta get videos out," which can be so difficult to deal with, that's something UA-cam isn't very forgiving about. It's easy to lose sight of yourself and/or your goals in exchange with more attention from the algorithm. But, I very much believe that it's WAY better to just pause, take your time and make sure you feel good about what you're doing. Speaking from experience it helps with burnout, and overall grounds your public image in a positive direction, I think. It's truly okay to slow down, especially if it can help you be the best public figure that you can.

She’s too focused on the positive affirmation and chooses to ignore the criticism she’s gotten, regardless of if it’s helpful to her own audience or herself, which is a recipe for disaster.
There will always be creators w/in the same niche that will call you out if they see you spreading info that is potentially harmful. That’s how YT works, and it’s a good system for keeping ppl accountable. It seems like she’s not ready for any of that, but it’s what she signed up for.

don't know the greg you are talking about but even when she has a lot of people cheering for her and loving her, doesn't mean that there isn't a problem, I stopped watching her because her video started triggering me, I felt so confused and for me there was an underlaying motive that I felt wasn't said about her journey(that's how I felt I repeat), her behaviour didn't match her words and the lack of coherence about her journey of loving herself and trying to share that message made me feel, again, triggered, I just couldn't keep watching her as the same as Olivia andrea, I think people who are going throught EDs doesn't have to wacht any of those channels, but the problem itself it's not them, it's the audience they have and the message that people are receiving from these youtubers..

I have to say I’m a huge Linda fan. And one of my favourite things about her videos is the click bait titles, it seems that no one ‘gets it.’ You see a video with a title saying something about ‘how to glow up’ ‘how to lose weight’ etc. and in your mind, if you’re struggling with your self image and want a ‘quick fix’ you click on it - expecting to learn all of these behaviours. Instead you’re met with a beautifully made, raw, honest video giving you what you actually need to hear I.e. genuine, lived advice rather than what you initially clicked for which is likely harmful. I don’t think it’s fair to say that someone is promoting harmful behaviours when Linda’s content is actually so nuanced. You said yourself (obviously this is no hate and I’m overjoyed to hear you say this) that you’ve never had an ed. And I think that’s why the majority of people (although I’m in no way meaning to invalidate others or make it out to be and exclusive club) who criticise her also cannot relate the same way a lot of her subscribers can. Her videos are so honest and so human, of course there is negativity there too. Abs I think for people who may be at a particularly vulnerable place with food/body image/exercise this is incredibly valuable. And it makes recovery etc. seem so much more realistic and obtainable. People will always find issues with content like Linda’s, but she never set out to be perfect. I think she’s so genuine and that’s her charm.

I feel so bad for Linda Sun when people talk about her like they do in this comment section I know what its like to view the world like her and her videos help me calm down so much when times are rough and I know its like that for others.
Unfortunately if you have a bad mindset and/or are easily triggered by stuff like ED Talk and Health then yes you're gonna see her content differently and not from the light she perceives it for her audience. Also her content may seem a little repetitive but so is all fitness influencers or just influencers in general. But also who am I talk by age 11 I had read the whole Harry Potter series 13 times over.
However I do agree she hasn't recovered yet, but she is *healing* you can see it through how she approaches different challenges and recently her videos are more simple trying viral foods and going on holiday in these places she has even gone on holiday for her mental health. The part I like about Linda Sun is she is a breeze of fresh air its nice to see the less filtered parts of a 'perfect' persons life even if some bits are still edited. I really believe she deserves to live a happy life I believe that for a more enjoyable experience of her videos you don't need to believe religiously that its all true but instead feel the love she is tryna give not the stuff she fails to provide 💕

what i did like though, was your part on self harm, as that is somewhat of a topic for me. i needed to hear this a year ago, two years ago, but still good nontheless and i believe it can help people who are in the place i was. your background really shows, honestly, would you be open to doing a video, or maybe a few instagrasm stories/qna on your studies! i would definitely be interested and i believe more people would. also, cat appreciation.

To the comment question of the week.. my daughter and I are both working on this right now; asking people if they would like some help before jumping in. My four year old is not the type to want much help. She gets angry when we try to help her if she didn’t ask or feel she needed it. I understand your dilemma! So our solution for our very human urge to help others, but to avoid stepping on someone’s toes is to ask first. Obviously you aren’t four, and like it was stated, maybe going to the staff would be the better option. But I wanted to throw that out there. Since wording it that way with my kids I’ve thought a lot more about that lately. I hope it gets resolved and good on you for noticing and wanting to make the gym a safer environment.

I honestly wish I had a direct line to talk to this girl because I think she has great intentions but. . .my biggest concern is that (as you mentioned) she continuously repeats these "revelations" about her unhealthy relationship with food, probably thinking that it's helpful to others with the same issue, but these "I should just listen to my body more" statements aren't enough to address the underlying causes of disordered eating. Which is why we keep seeing the same pattern of; recover, relapse, repeat.
As a mental health professional who has been through intensive therapy for similar issues, I strongly believe that individual psychotherapy modalities like cognitive and dialectical behavior therapy are the only way to really resolve the core issues. The idea that spouting platitudes about self-love and body positivity are enough to really address potential trauma or co-occurring diagnoses like OCD, anxiety, and depression is so reckless. I hope someone close to Linda recommends therapy so that she can stop obsessing about food and body image and live her life fully.
    Also, your hair looks great!

Hi Harry! I’ve been a long time follower but don’t comment very often. This might have been answered in a previous video but: how do you balance training for sport, cross training in the gym, mobility and flexibility training, PT or pre-hab, competition prep/rehearsals ?😵‍💫 I find that I’m absolutely exhausted some times on my rest days, so I don’t think I can cut back on those anymore. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated 😭
For context: I’m a pole dancer. It’s a very upper body heavy sport. I teach 3-4x classes a week and sometimes also practice for performances or competitions outside of teaching. I try to get in an hour or so of training tricks or rehearsal after I teach. But, a lot of what we do is very one-sided (either using mostly one side to perform the trick or one side pushes while the other pulls). After doing mobility/flexibility training, I barely have time to hit the gym and get in PT for these nagging injuries I have (which probably happened *because* I’m not cross training enough).
