Punch-Out!! (Arcade) - Hi Score Mode [7,000,010 points] (Nintendo Switch Default Settings)

- Decided to overtake the #1 score for arcade Punch Out on the last online leaderboard category that I didn't already have have the top spot on (Hi Score Mode without savestates or pauses). This is in preparation for the SGDQ run of this game, just to make sure that my improvisation is at a decent level for this game.
This run was played on a Nintendo Switch on the port done by Hamster. This port is based off of the Japanese romset, which has some key gameplay differences in some spots compared to the US version that most people are familiar with. The DIP switch settings were locked to the settings that Hamster assumed were default (2nd of 4 difficulties & 2nd longest timer), which is different from classic default settings (easiest difficulty & longest timer).
There's really not a lot to say about this run, haha. Bald Bull is consistently the most threatening fight, but even when things got sketchy, I knew enough details about the fight to keep me constantly alive, even by the skin of my teeth at times! I constantly take advantage of the instant knockdown glitch on the later loop Piston Hurricane fights to save me a ton of time in getting a consistently high scoring pace.
Needless to say, I could have continued playing indefinitely, but I was reaching exhaustion and annoyance, so I stopped it myself at a fitting spot.
I also streamed this run live on Twitch if anyone cares to watch with commentary! / 421083076

Glass Joe
what a sight to behold...
All of the boxers in the arcade Punch-Out!! games instantly become "top ranked" once they switch to blue gloves apparently! 😂
(L.O.L.!)
Joe finally made to the top dawgs
Jesus Christ, a 3 hour run of the same set of contenders. I was half scared that you were gonna hit no on accident on the online rankings prompt
Hahaha, someone in my Twitch chat kept reminding me to not press B on the prompt once it came up.
@@zallard1 sounds like a nice fellow 🤔
@@FramebyFrameanimation let me guess, you reminded him? 😂
This just made me realize that its the first time that you EVER see Glass Joe with a "Top Ranked" sign in Punch Out, implying that he somehow managed to climb to the top spot to challenge you as a champion (as the second loop and onwards is you doing Title Defense), and he can actually withstand one knock-out. Yes, you do see him again in Title Defense in Punch-Out Wii, but ignoring how he got the chance to fight you, he was forced to wear a headgear, which is why he can resist more punches there lol
also the only time
"Hey, that guy's pretty good."
"Good? Are you kidding? Over 200 fights and still on his original quarter!"
I am old enough to have actually played this game in the arcade back in the 80's. I never got past blue-gloved Bald Bull. Amazing skill you have here, zallard1. Makes me wish I'd spent more quarters.
Mr.sandman: gets a intro for being the champion
ZCA: am I a joke to you

Finally, after *248* fights (that's a lot of patience and determination, admirable...) Piston Hurricane ends up being the World Champion.
After *+3 hours* . God bless your guts, zallard1.
Dang, you have skills! I cant even beat the 2nd fight with piston hurricane. You have a lot of dedication to this game and you deserve to be number 1 on the leaderboard.
I’ve never seen the JP version of the game before so there’s a lot of odd differences. I’ve been able to loop the score once and that was tiring, so to go on this long is really an achievement. Insane score, would love an in depth breakdown of some of the strategies.
I think the biggest difference between the JP version and the US version is, that pizza pasta doesn't return
3:49:24, I'm addicted to the game over theme for some reason.
That score is absolutely Amazing Zallard 1. The farthest I ever got was the 12th Mr. Sandman. I made a mistake and lost however I know I can get much farther😎😎😎
Nice! Once you get that far, you're really close to being able to marathon the game.
@@zallard1 Thanks
You guys are so much better then me. I have trouble on 1st kid quick and I’ve only beat 1st mr sandman once. I tried 2nd glass joe and he creamed me😂 ps zallard1 i bought punch out arcade on my switch and I love it. PPS is it just me or is piston hurricane a lot harder than bald bull?
@@HankTank81 I play alot in the arcade I could never beat bald bull however many years later I played it on my smartphone that's when I became an expert at it. Just keep playing an easy way to beat kid quick is to use rights. Good luck
Michael Stroman Thanks for the advice.
score: goes from 999510 to 10
zallard1: wait i did it? did i beat the game?
also zallard1:NOOO ALL THAT TIME WASTED FOR A SIMPLE GAME SUCH HIGH SCORE TO 10 WHY DID I DO THIS?!?
Considering that happened 7 times throughout the playthrough that reaction makes no sense.
I remember the days when Zallard really was an up and coming boxer. Nothing has really changed though, you never cease to amaze and impress with your mastery. kudos sir!
I didnt watch the whole thing, but it seems like kid quick, learned his lesson quick. He only appeared once. 😂
Hey I just noticed that on the Nintendo switch The second pizza pasta is not available!!! That really sucks because pizza pasta is my favorite character😥😥😥
Yeah, I'm not sure why they replaced Pizza 2 with Joe 2 for the JP version. Really odd design choice.
Maybe he retired and decided to return to Italy
Wyatt Cleveland 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yeah, and that's a shame too. Bummer that this game FINALLY got ported which literally took decades to happen at last, and still didn't get the 100% true experience out of it because of that also. Good thing I have the North American version of it on my Mame machine, and modded 2TB original Xbox console, but still though.
0:56 what did he even say
Glass Joe being the top ranked means he beat the rest at one point
Or he simply switched to using blue gloves, which somehow magically makes you a vastly improved boxer in the arcade Punch-Out!! games! (L.O.L.!)
Reminder: when i Will start boxing, choose ALWAYS Blue outfit
They need to add the sequel to this on the switch.
Yeah I agree
They did a while ago.
imagine you just see this guy in the arcade and a whole line of people waiting for this guy to lose
this game reallly BRING back memories ! thank YOU zalllard for sharing this

Ref in Arcade Punch-Out: I'm 4 parallel universes ahead of you.
bruh the ref counts to ten in 4 fucking seconds like wtf
How does he count THAT fast!?
He's trying to go home
I like how in the 80s piston hurricane has an Afro and a fade in the 90s
I'd love to see someone do this in an actual arcade with a crowd around the cabinet, loud music playing, smoke everywhere, and a sticky uppercut button.
7:20 Ah, this is the Japan version. I had a sense, when you beat Pizza Pasta on ONE knockdown. I played this in America (where I was born and raised), but when visiting my Mom's family in Japan (my Dad was third generation), I played a Punch-Out at a bowling alley in Osaka, and couldn't believe it when I beat Pizza Pasta in one knockdown! The distinct thing is, in the USA, Kid Quick is eliminated first, but you fight Pizza Pasta a second time. In the Japan version, Kid Quick AND Pizza Pasta are replaced by a "third Glass Joe."
I blinked. What happened during the first go around?
Um........ too much
I struggle with piston Honda in the second cycle 😭 this is so good
Piston Huricane
Hurricane. Hurricane is from Cuba 🇨🇺 Honda is from Japan 🇯🇵

Good luck trying to play this game at the drive in movie I swear some kid would always be on it 😤
Yeah, and I heard this game had massive lines in arcades back in the day, when it first came out too! XD
I have the original arcade here, and I am noticing a few differences. Most notably voices are different for KO and various voices I cant understand, in japanese? When the guy counts the 10 seconds he seems much faster too.

Where did Kid Quick and Pizza Pasta go?
This was such a great game 👍
mom:okay one last game!
zallard1:okay mom!

Imagine clicking no I don't wanna show the world.
I like how Zallard is just like I decided to overtake the #1 score
This somehow looks better than super punch outs graphics and that was made in the mid 90s and this was in the early 80s
I came to see thumbnail picture
When counting to ten takes 2 seconds.
1:41:14 when all the points faded away...
The way the guy says Uppercut
Kid Quick is a good character but after losing he disappears.
Kid Quick always reminded me of Chris Rock
Holy hell... you have a lot more patience than I do. I've only ever played this game to about 1.5 million before I was thoroughly sick of it (on the arcade hardware). I've been wanting to ask you about how the Switch version plays... does it have the same input lag and other issues that PO and SPO have in MAME?
Hah, so I mainly did this run as a way to practice consistency at the harder fights to prepare for SGDQ, while simultaneously using it as an excuse to try to get to the top of the online leaderboard. I think before this run, I only ever got to a million and change before getting bored and stopping. Some of the patterns are different, due to them using the JP romset of the game instead of the US one. It has different count speeds, different voice clips, and Kid Quick doesn't retaliate against right jabs anymore. The later Bull fights also have 2 possible delays, one where he jumps 3 times, and one where he jumps 2 times. There is definitely some input lag, but it didn't seem too bad to adapt to. This game isn't really tough though, so it's a pretty easy adjustment to make. I would only ever really be able to tell how bad it is if they ever released arcade SPO in the same format.
@@zallard1 " I would only ever really be able to tell how bad it is if they ever released arcade SPO in the same format."
Yeah, that's like with MAME. I can play PO on MAME indefinitely (well, until I get bored to tears) despite the lag, but SPO on MAME is a completely different story as you know.
By the way, I wish I'd known about this before you did it; I would have suggested fight #255 as a secondary goal after you passed 6 million points, because one of the veteran members on the old Twin Galaxies forums back in the mid 2000s told me that, in his experience, things get weird during fight #255 and I'd like to know if that's true. I don't have the patience to do it myself, but you were pretty close to fight #255 already. As you may know, 255 is a significant number in 8-bit programs. For example, from Wikipedia:
"The use of eight bits for storage in older video games has had the consequence of it appearing as a hard limit in many video games. For example, in the original The Legend of Zelda game, Link can carry a maximum of 255 rupees.[3] It was often used for numbers where casual gameplay would not cause anyone to exceed the number. However, in most situations it is reachable given enough time. This can cause many other peculiarities to appear when the number wraps back to 0, such as the infamous "kill screen" seen after clearing level 255 of Pac-Man.[4]"
@@MaximRecoil yeah I was surprised he just didn't make it to 256.
The other big question is 10,000,000 score
Why aren't I hearing "Flame Away!"? Ever?
He didn't even name himself "mac"
Dissapointing
Sucks that Pizza Pasta only appears once

@@landpufferfish677 It looked as if Piston Hurricane threw a middle finger.
Why after beating Mr.Sandman everyone is top ranked and wear blue gloves ?

The Ref counts are so quick…
1:38 it said he was down for the count when he wasnt on the floor yet
i thought kid quick would wake up on 1 second but he didnt so hes not quick
Casi 4 horas de juego y casi 150 peleas, de verdad que eso es tener un carajo que hacer.
This must be in Novice mode
I wonder why some of the voice lines changed in the game
So we have 2 versions of Mr sandman, bald bull, glass Joe, piston hurricane and pizza pasta but only one version of kid quick. Weird
Watch this on. 25 speed it's like a nightmare
I did that, and the 10 count is still too fast!

Is this the world record?
It's the highest score on the Switch's online leaderboard, and probably is the highest score for the Japanese version of the game (that's what this port is based on). The world record for the US version of the game is something like 18 million or so? Roughly 700+ fights were needed for that run, and probably a marathon of 12+ hours or so.
@@zallard1 For the record, it's emulated (like MAME), not a port. All of Hamster, Inc.'s "Arcade Archives" releases are emulated. So it's not based on the Japanese version, it _is_ the Japanese version, at least the game code is (i.e., the ROM files). How faithful it is to the original gameplay depends on the quality of the hardware emulation, just as with MAME or any other emulator.
As for MAME, PO and SPO both run pretty crappy as you know, and that's because they both use the same driver (punchout.cpp), which, according to "2600" (PO/SPO hardware expert who posts on KLOV) has been in desperate need of a complete rewrite for some 20 years, but no one seems to want to do it. Probably because a casual player doesn't see anything wrong with it the way it is.
Wait you can get this on switch?
Yep! It's 8 dollars iirc.
Thanks for info. great run by the way 👍

I love how no matter how many times you beat each opponent, the game still says "You're an up and coming boxer!" when you're effectively dominating the entire league with no one in your way. You're not up and coming. You're a monster in your prime. You rule the roost! Give it up for the Champion!
