Super Punch-Out!! - Blindfolded Race w/ Hootey performed at GDQx 2019 [

- Both myself and fellow Super Punch Out speedrunner Hootey both got the opportunity to race each other in Super Punch Out blindfolded at a GDQ! The time listed was my finish time from pressing start until the TKO appears at the end of the Nick fight (this time accounts for the accidental quick start by adding a second to the time).
This game is ridiculously inconsistent and difficult to beat blindfolded at all, let alone in a marathon setting. When I beat this game blindfolded in AGDQ 2014, it had tons of lucky breaks in it, so a repeat performance would require an intense reroute to heighten the chances of success before another marathon showing would be worth attempting.
Both Hootey and myself have been hard at work finding extremely fast setups and ways to make many of these fights as consistent as they could possibly be. That being said, Super Punch Out is wildly random in terms of getting extremely fast times, even to the point where most of our setups are either "mostly consistent but can't be completely" or we just literally have to options for some fights in terms of consistency.
Despite everything, both of us were extremely close the entire race with tons of huge lead changes. I am also ecstatic that both of us were able to handily beat the AGDQ 2014 time that I got for blind SPO, which really shows how far this game and the community surrounding it has come!
This also happens to be the second time I've ever completed a blindfolded Punch Out run at a Games Done Quick event to where I never lost a single bout with any opposing boxer! The first time I pulled this off was actually the most recent Wii Punch Out run at SGDQ!
I am super proud of how far Hootey has come in learning this game to the point to where we were both handily capable of sharing our hard work and practice with the GDQ audience this year!

I'm usually not a fan of GDQ videos, but this video is excellent. No forced humor, no cringey donation reads, just an incredibly techinical run performed by the best, and explained by those who know what they're talking about. Very fun watch.

I never even knew about super punch out that much until I got an SNES classic and it came bundled on it. Fell in love with it immediately, and only played that game until I beat it. Spent various nights up to beat it quickly, and now I absolutely love watching speedruns on both this and Punch Out for Wii

Never finished this game completely tho, only got to the last circuit, and NES punchout, forget about it. Lol...

Kepabra dizzying gabby jay is actually really easy. All you really have to do is punch him when the guard is low with the right jab repeatedly. And upper cut him when you can (upward super punch).
Thanks to GDQ, now after 26 years I finally learned that left punch and right punch have different speeds. That should be one of the most basic things to notice but I never did xD
I recall it said that in the manual. One of the punches is quicker but less strong

Y'know, whenever I watch these, they make me think of ancient greek oracles. The kind of skill and dedication these guys have to the craft of speedrunning is genuinely impressive and I'd even go as far as to say they've been blessed by gods for such a duty.

I've seen a bunch of these SPO speed runs and one thing I've seen that the runner always does is pause the Gabby Jay fight. What is the reason for doing this?
when counter punching, the KO meter fills quite a bit, but it takes a moment. while paused, the KO meter still fills from the counter punch, while if you had not paused, jay would throw another punch before your KO meter filled.
The audio mixing in this video is Hollywood quality, give whoever did it a raise

Super punch out is cool, don’t know why it’s shunned
It's because a lot people felt that new characters in the game are forgettable and are lame which is bullshit.
Zallard kinda jumped the gun when they started
They couldn't hear and I think they practiced for a "3... 2... 1..." but the speaker started at 5 but the "touching" guy already had his hand on the shoulder.... it was a tiny cluster fuck of execution. And I'm sure neither runner would have fought over it if it was that close. With as much "timing" as speedrunners do, they know the real race begins once you hit the first button... doesn't matter when your opponent did, it's when *YOU* did. So had that second difference, I'm sure they would have both agreed that whoever *actually* had the wining time would be the winner. But in the meantime just amazed that in such a game with such rng while playing blind, that it was so close. I don't really see that much "smack talk" amongst speedrunners. They all seem to just admire the skills each one has, and "hey if your times match mine then hello brother" kind of thing. I mean yeah, there are of course assholes in all groups, but it's not like in boxing/mma where the crowd *expects* you two to hate each other kind of thing.

I definitely want to work on a tutorial eventually, I just keep getting caught up in stuff, and it gets kind of hard to set aside the time needed to do a tutorial that's at the quality I'd want it to be at.
