@@aplsedNo, it’s that the criteria for publication has become a lot more loose for alternative categories and ROM hacks so they are going back and relooking at runs rejected for that reason
Oh, I think I remember proposing this kind of subcategory of runs to some people years ago. Nice! Will be eager to see a button masher reduced to sub-200 button presses.
The goal is that time is secondary to optimizing button presses, but it seems like some additional button presses are added for the sake of time, like for the fireworks on 1-1
He would've had to press A to reach the flag no matter what. The "I jump here to avoid fireworks" comment means that he delayed the time he pressed the button, in order to save time.
If you check the TASVideos page and read the description, there's another encode that shows the button presses. Brandon holds B the entire time. He can't walk off the edge because he'd end up on the pipe due to running, meaning he'd have to release and re-press B, so instead he jumps to avoid having to release B to slow down. Works out to be the same number of presses regardles. Also keep in mind (because it tripped me up), this is a minimum press run, not a minimum A press run. I was confused for a few moments until I re-read the title.
Cool concept, makes for an interesting route. 2 things though: Please let the subtitles stay longer on screen. I don't want to pause every 10 seconds. Second: Show controller inputs! That's the whole gimmick here, so please have a UI element that shows the inputs
This TAS run's purpose is to complete the game the fastest, with the most minimum inputs, not to beat the entire game and its levels, with minimum inputs! Beating every level, or collecting every power up, then beating the game is called a 100%, or "warpless" Speedrunning a game, or beating it with skipping levels or power ups in mind is called Any%
2:37 can't Mario jump from the World 6 pipe to the world 8 pipe in 1 jump as long as you have momentum? Or is that only possible as small mario? Just a little thing I noticed
@Winslinator Glad I'm not the only one to think about it. I hate to question what a TAS does in a run but there's always a chance that one option was forgotten. Very uncommon of course but TASes develop over the years.
0:17: Needs to slow down enough to not overshoot the pipe ^^ 2:32: Unlike later Mario games, the mushroom platformers are solid! Mario couldn’t make it past without the jump or ducking :D (and ducking would require more inputs :>)
The first jump is used to slowdown an walk into the pipe (you don't want to let go of B because you'd have to repress it again, and otherwise you're too fast) You can't let go of right to slow down, because you'd have to press it again to enter the pipe, so this strategy is fine Geotale explained the other jump perfectly
"Minimum presses" - meanwhile at 00:08 keeps pressing the Right Burton (Right Arrow) instead od just not to press and just stay in place until the Mushroom appears.

This run is 12 years old and only now been submitted lol
i didn't believe this and bad to check the website. you're right. that's crazy, why would it take 12 years??
@@SpyroTheEternalNight There are some rule changes that now allow this type of runs, hence why this long time after submission.

The commentary is a great addition! Great job!

Interesting concept for a challenge run.
If you turn closed captioning on there's explanations of everything that's done at that time.

@@PASRC Ah okay. Thank you for clarifying that. Using "now" instead of "here" would have been more clear to me I think.
@@breadfiestayeah, except 1 firework loses 0 time
so why do you have to jump twice at 0:20? would just holding right and walking off after the first jump land you on top of the pipe?
Yes.

Ahh, I beat this game in 14 minutes using the skips in 1-2 and 4-2. Yet I can never beat Brandon. And I had infinite button pressing abilities.
There really is no rules anymore with goals, is there...
At this rate we're gonna need an extensions leaderboard just for Mario 1.

Soooo like a regular warp TAS? I take it this must be much more nuanced than that
If this run is 12 yo, how optimized has this been since then?
wow
Now do a Hokuto no Ken with minimum keys pressed.

Because that counts as one continuous press. Had they let go it wouldve been an extra press
They needed to go right anyway.
I stopped watching after having seen a whole lot of presses in 1-1
