There is a huge possible improvement. If you exploit the game's mechanics to get to the very right of the screen (backwards jumps, etc.) and touch the flagpole, Mario will teleport to the left side of the screen. If Mario then falls in a pit, the game will take an extraordinarily wrong time to transition to the next level. When it does, the life counter will not change, so it doesn't count as dying. Holy cow. 8-4 looks like it would be absolutely terrifying if there was serious competition for this category. The pipe-wrapping basically means you have to wager up-front how fast you can beat the rest of the level, and all at the end of nearly an hour and a half of deathless play. At least in regular speedruns, finishing 8-4 a few frames slow won't always kill the run.
I don't think that would be a problem (unless you're really unlucky with how the timing works out). If you have the maximum possible number of loops, there'd still probably be plenty of safe time. And doing one slower would likely make winning impossible if there's serious competition, so there's no uncetainty involved.

I find it fascinating that this is one of the few games that can actually have a slowest "speedrun." Unlike other games, SMB has no pit stops, the timer is constantly ticking away. In other games, you could just stand around doing nothing for as long as you please, potentially giving the game no time limit. The SMB slowrun can definitely be optimized further. I think it would only be possible for games that have a built in timer where when it ends you die so that way you actually have to finish the level and not turn the stream into a just chatting stream with videogame background music
@@jaingalt9444 You might be just laughing at the thought, but Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has genuine slowrun potential! -Timer kills you at 10 minutes -The more rings you collect, the longer ring bonus tally at the end of the level will last. -Special stages (found at checkpoints, of which there are a few in any given level) pause the timer for their duration AND (unlike most other sonic games) have a set duration. Routing for a path to even get to each checkpoint in one run (and figuring out the last possible second for certain bosses/cutscenes) would be something genuinely cool to see IMO.
@Oskar_Dogg That's not true, even if you could get infinite lives, you still can't play it for 100 years. You will have to die, and the one that is playing for 101 years now is definitely a better player than you.
This is so freeing. It's like when you train to be a strongman instead of a bodybuilder and you realise you don't havw to be afraid of food. You just master yourself.
I think I've come up with a rule plan: Act like you only have one life for each level. If you die in a level, pause the timer and complete the level, and then resume the timer. With that, it's more like seeing how long you can last in a level, and would fit with the no death/pause rules you made up on the spot.
I found a flaw with your run. In 1-1 if you enter the pipe and exit again it stops the timer twice (2 times) but if you continue without going into the pipe you can grab 1 power up, lose it and grab another one close by stoping the time a total of 4 times.

Not using the 1-Up trick should be prescribed
Curious thought. Would it take longer if you triggered the fireworks, or does ending on 0 save more time? (Never mind, just heard your explanation at 1:30!)
I did not think about how interesting this would be until you brought up the timer and being able to stop the timer
4:54 Bruce makes a surprise appearance
Bismuth I don't get this one, what did you mean? Also you have some legendary videos bro, keep it up
Wait why was Bowser blue for a split second?
It also happens at 21:09. That sprite is called "Bruce". I don't know why it happens, but I'm pretty sure you can only find it through that glitch or in The Lost Levels.
@Lucas R when you get close enough to Bowser the color palette swaps to make him green, but if you stand far enough back and he walks forward far enough he can get on screen with the palette used for the rest of the level. Basically he's blue for the same reason the koopas are blue.
My phone is showing me this at 30 fps, so i can't see mario when he blinks after taking damage.
That reminds me of that one trick in sm64
Oh, is that why? I was wondering why he kept going invisible.
Ah that explains it
same here, i'm using a really low-end chromebook
ohhhh that explains why i was literally so confused
Same
Guys at 11:24 he spliced the run if you look *REALLY* closely...
Kosmic exposed for cheating in a slow run!
Yea ikr
Crazy how they made it so if you have x0 coins and the clock is on 0 seconds, then zero fireworks go off
Very nice easter egg
not all speedrunners are THIS entertaining to watch
I think I like you a lot, kind sir
He's not a Speedrunner he's a slowrunner check your privileges
This would actually be a speedrun I could complete
Initially I thought the same but then he said you're not allow die...🙁
I can’t finish 8-2 without dying
Now there’ll be a category extension called slow%
I've been watching so much speedrun content UA-cam is recommending slowrunning now.
UA-cam basically just said "slow down!"
Now do a fake one where you drink water and eat a salad all the while your heart rate is at a normal, consistent pace
UA-cam is playing the challenge of: Recomending this masterpiece as slowly as possible
You know... this is actually pretty ingenious LMFAO
Nintendo right now: "Alright, I think people are finally starting to get tired of our old 2D platformers. We should do something fresh and exciting for our next installment!"
"Sir, have you seen this video?"
"What is he... Oh my god. Whatever, let's just sell them the same game for the seventh time."
You mean Skyrim?
@@rabid123foxSkyrim isn't a Nintendo game chief
This is actually a super fun challenge. Thanks for the content. Maybe you could do a legit one in the future and make an actual category out of it.
05:29 that whole series of hitting the block, taking damage and taking the powerup was all in time with the music.
Can’t wait for someone to do a Sonic slowrun.
gotta go slow
This is pretty much me walking to school as slow as i possibly can without being too late
"Beating super mario bro's as slowly as possible"
Me: *ART THOU CHALLENGING ME?*
"I'm only 35 minutes behind, it's not that bad!" -me, when I speedrun anything
Normal speedrun ad 5 minutes: almost done
This speedrun: *3rd level*
They would already be done in 5 minutes
That's a slowrun bro
you also loose a few extra frames if you take damage and the screen needs to scroll back to center. so taking damage while running is more beneficial.
I thought this was going to be a "speedrun" where you never held run through all the levels. That could be a cool challenge if you've never done it
i thought the same too
I think theres a jump in world 8 that needs a running jump
I'm pretty sure that's a speedrun people have done called walkathon.
I found this concept very engaging and fun to follow along! Hopefully we'll see more runs like this in the future.
Thanks! Here's the sequel, not nearly as many people saw it. And I plan to do this again and a lot better in the near future!

@@Kosmicd12 That's great! Thank you for answering as well mate! :D
Blessed comment thread, can't wait to watch this next
I wonder if it would be possible to do "slowruns" in other games. Imagine records for the slowest times possible...I must admit it would be hilarious and interesting
I'm thinking of doing a BOTW slowrun.
I think it would only be possible for games that have a built in timer where when it ends you die so that way you actually have to finish the level and not turn the stream into a just chatting stream with videogame background music
Slowrun Sonic 🤣🤣
@@jaingalt9444 You might be just laughing at the thought, but Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has genuine slowrun potential!
-Timer kills you at 10 minutes
-The more rings you collect, the longer ring bonus tally at the end of the level will last.
This is the most quarantine thing I have ever seen
HappyLee should do a TAS of this since „Max Coins“ was done and he knows how to gain the most 1-ups to make it longer.
1-ups don't make it longer and Death is not allowed
Oskar_Dogg ayy I forgot about inf lives
@Oskar_Dogg That's not true, even if you could get infinite lives, you still can't play it for 100 years. You will have to die, and the one that is playing for 101 years now is definitely a better player than you.
This is so freeing. It's like when you train to be a strongman instead of a bodybuilder and you realise you don't havw to be afraid of food. You just master yourself.
Big improvement: Try to enter the pipe in 1-1 as often as possible to save plenty of time
The screen can’t scroll left
The most interesting thing is that the runner has the time to explain in details what he's doing
Finally. Someone who beats it as slow as me!
proof?
@@janmatula1534 lol
Ha! I beat it even slower!
Larree proof?
I think I've come up with a rule plan:
Act like you only have one life for each level. If you die in a level, pause the timer and complete the level, and then resume the timer. With that, it's more like seeing how long you can last in a level, and would fit with the no death/pause rules you made up on the spot.
this guy is so happy about his slowrun strats and I love it
I found a flaw with your run. In 1-1 if you enter the pipe and exit again it stops the timer twice (2 times) but if you continue without going into the pipe you can grab 1 power up, lose it and grab another one close by stoping the time a total of 4 times.
My actual "speedrun" would still last longer than this. :P
Speedrun: made to beat the game as fast as possible
Kosmic: *LET'S BEAT THE GAME AS SLOW AS POSSIBLE*
