- Western AF presents: Colter Wall | " Cowpoke"
We met up with CW at the Hanger in Bar Nunn, WY. He said he wanted to share a song that spoke to the landscape and spirit of Wyoming, and thus came Colter's rendition of 'Cowpoke.'
CW earns his spot in country music history by not only giving life to the spirit of the west but living it. When he's not playing shows across the continents, CW spends his time tending to his ranch in Saskatchewan. There is no off switch on CW's cowboy lifestyle. It is 24/7. And no one should question that.

😆that was awesome!!
He needs to write a song called “hard labour” in his moms honour.
“Congrats ma’am. You have a happy, healthy, one hundred and eighty two pound man”
🤣
Do y'all sell stickers and other such swag?
@@joshu4780 yes friend. www.westernaf.net
The fact that this boy ain't at the forefront of country music shows how controlled the whole industry is
Well Joe Rogan just brought him up so that's likely about to change...
And that doesn't bother me a goddamn bit. He's talented, country hasn't been shit for quite awhile.
@@dreamybuys1133 No no no I was being sincere! Like JRE can change a persons life in a night! I had never heard him till that episode and everything Joe endorses blows up and usually he's pretty discerning!
P.S. Currently wondering how many of my comments have been interpreted incorrectly
P.S.S That kid has pipes in a world that everything sounds the same. ❤
@@dreamybuys1133 I'm a Gary Allen Clay Walker kinda lady. I want to be able to know the artist after the first few notes!
A UPS driver that we know wellstopped at the shop a couple weeks ago and Tyler Childers was playing. He said "I don't know why he isn't the biggest thing in music" I responded that "He is here, along with Colter Wall".
"To our American friends, forgive us for Bieber and enjoy Colter" - Canada
Your record is expunged. In fact the scale is tipped in your favor now.
Hahahah!!!
@Big D Letterkenny not enough?
Thank You Lovely Canadian Friends. We’ll send Beiber Back.
If it takes Canadian country to revive REAL country and bring it back from the dead, so be it. I am sick to death of modern "country" radio (aka pop).
The word "beans" had never sounded more beautiful
I would give this a thumbs up but the like count seems fitting.
@@kalvinfischer2913 I see what you're saying, that sounds fair

My son has Autism and this is his favorite song. When Colter does his hooooo hooooo he just gets the biggest smile on his face. Thank yoy Colter
I smile as well
nah this is awesome brother!!!
That young man has great taste in music.
I have autism and this is my favorite song. Your son rules.
So special! 🥲 Your comment made me smile and tear up at the same time. Music is so powerful.
i’ve never heard a marlboro red sing before.

Dominic Bautista no it didn’t Cal Naughton JR thanks for asking
Haha maybe a Winston, but never a Marlboro Red.
Nicolas Castellano no he’s a Marlboro red a Winston would be Ed Bruce
I’m almost 40, and I wanna be like Colter when I grow up.
Yeah
Im 69 and same

God damn Pinkertons
He sounds like he’s from another time long ago such a wonderful voice
The guitar is beautifully untuned to make such a unique and beautiful sound 🥴
sounds a ton like 2018-2020 to me.
When this mans 60 he’ll sound like he’s 200 years old and it’ll be awesome
Lol and he's in his 20s , now he sounds like he's a 50 yo
People say that when he turns 60, he'll sound exactly like Johnny Cash. He's not equivalent to Cash, but he's for sure smiling from up above at this young man.
Vincent Reyes amen brother
Aaron bishop gosh dang, I can’t wait
You only get 10 yrs after you sell your soul for that brick of gold.
Colter Wall and Tyler Childers give me hope in the future of country music.
Jr are you not a fan of Sturgill or Cody Jinks? Just curious.
Childers has done gone mainstream. The new album sucks.
Smell N Roses, have to agree with ya.
It's still better than other bullshit on country radio.
I am pretty disappointed in the direction Childers is taking but one thing i think we can all agree with is that colter will never sell out. He’ll lay a new foundation for NEW mainstream country to come. We can all hope at least.
I can not believe this Colter has a voice like this, he's got an old soul and his voice is freakin amazing.
Man the talent of Colter Wall is outstanding. His voice sounds like an oldman which matches these songs perfectly. 💪🏼
I don’t think people realize that this young man will go down in history as a legend in country music. It’s only a matter of time.
Why do you think people don’t realise that..? His videos have nearly 100 million views ..
@@andyp7539 100 million views? It's at 5.6 million x)
GOAT. Up there with Cash, Nelson, Jennings
Final Paradigm, I think he means all of his videos combined.
"This young man" , as you call him , could care less about "History" .
Let History write itself .... Now , HIS Story is another matter entirely,
Mr. Wall is still writing that one , while doing his Thing in Music .
"Northern Montana? Heh, funny guy."
Colt was probably thinkin about writing a murder ballad about that guy
lmao at this...
honest lol at this
And he followed with "speaking of Wyoming" lol
Anyways, speaking about wyoming...
😂😂
The "whoo-whoooing" is underrated and a one of a kind sound in country music today.
I'm lonesome, but happy
Rich, but I'm broke
And the good Lord knows the reason
I'm just a cowpoke
From Cheyenne to Douglas
The ranges I know
'Cause I drift with the wind
No one cares where I go
I ain't got a dime
In these ol' worn out jeans
So I'll stop eating steak
And I'll go back to beans
I'll pick up a ten spot
In Prescott, I know
Ridin' the broncs
In the big rodeo
Some evening in springtime
A filly I'll find
And I might spend all summer
With her on my mind
But I'll never be branded
And never be broke
I'm a carefree, range-riding
Drifting cowpoke
😊
I'm moving to my dad's ranch, listening to this everyday and forgetting the rest of the world exsists.
Decent plan.
Godspeed brother
FUCK YEAH!
Honestly I’d do the same if I could.
I envy you brother, have fun on the ranch
Every now and then, a song comes along and makes you yearn for something you've never even experienced. I've never rode a horse, never slept outside and looked up at the stars, but God this song and his voice make me want all that really fuckin bad. Sit around a fire, leaned up against a tree , go to sleep and wake up, make cheap, strong coffee, jump on and move along.
Do it man you won’t regret it
Go for it, but there is just a bit more to being a cowboy
Lean into, man! There are 'outfits' aka ranches that take newbies on ranching adventures as part of their business; though it never hurts to take a few riding lessons first :) Colter, as the story goes, was brought up as a town kid who has since learned how to ride and work cattle. I'm betting it would be a hell of an experience for you. Plus you gotta' see the stars!
Dave stameys the original singer. Should go listen to it. He does it very good though
👥🙏
As a young man who’s fading into the fall of his years, growing some grey and wrinkles, dreaming of the back thens, these fine young folk sure make me thrilled for the days to come. They’ve not forgotten….
We never will. We may have been asleep at the reigns but we'll open eyes, flare our nostrils and heel our steer hastily into the burning sun.
You are not fading, my OG. These are your golden years!! I hope to make it there. Giving you your flowers now my silver friend
We Will never forget just read a book on Billy the kid.. been saving money for a cattle farm since I graduated
I grew up in the Oklahoma plains on 48 acres and boy this reminds me of home. The smells and the wind shifting through the grass. The sound of hooves beating and the creak of a saddle. I might have cried a little 😅.
Jesus Christ died for your sinssssss please repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand 😊😊
Damn I’ve never even been to Oklahoma and this comment put a memory I never had in my head

I believe Colter is the walking middle finger to Autotune.
@@taylorbalkom6929 that's the one I missed.... I'm so sad
Not really.. autotune doesnt aim to sound remotely like this.
@@harmondraws i believe he means that many people nowadays just can't really sing anymore. They just do something catchy and don't want to train singing (if you know what i mean) autotune helps those people
@@harmondraws You're missing the point. He's saying the pop/rap/pop country fellas rely heavily on autotune for their songs. While guys like Colter do not - he relies on just his raw vocals and instrumental to make a song.
So true
High time someone put the "Western" back in Country.
Medium Rick Ned LeDoux
Kinda weird that the most western sound is coming from someone in the upper north
@@carsontatcher2434 Upper north relative to the US. He's in the plains still. Western as can be
@@TheFIREFLAME53 Shit, you right. You right
Real "country" is Appalachian bluegrass. If it doesnt have a banjo and fiddle it's not American enough for me.
Im not super country. But smoking a stogie in the desert with my boys in the Marine Corps listening to this was one of the best memories of my life.
Finally a real cowboy!!! Keep em coming Colter you are the man!
I ate a pot brownie and saw him live, I almost cried when he sang this
Hahaha
Lmao
On both accounts I’m jealous
I saw him live and cried to every song dead sober
This is the funniest shit I've read all day!! His voice gives me goosebumps.
He’s the best thing in (real) country music right now.....in my humble opinion.
JayRoo the fact that you say real Country music, tells me that you agree that pop country is crap. And many country singers merge over to pop music eventually. This guys holds that good ol real cowboy sound. And I’m not even a country music fan. Except for Hank Williams and Johnny Cash.
@@brakeforblake For fucks sake, do you people always go for the pity party, whoa is me, gripes? Real country is country music the way it is supposed to be. Not horseshit with mentions of tailgates, a pop beat, and the hick-hop sounds. Seriously gky.
brakeforblake what about this song is misogynistic in any way? I’d love to know how this is more offensive than kenny chesney or toby keith or any other number of shitty artists with shitty personalities inside of the pop country sphere. You think you sound witty but you aren’t.
Agreed.
brakeforblake Riding, ranching, plains, rails, momma, jail time, getting drunk, thinking about a woman, and big hats.

I don’t care what you say, Colter Wall is the best and is the most authentic western/cowboy country singer now a days in my opinion
By a long shot! I love it!!
He turned down Joe Rogan because he's busy being a ranch hand in Texas. Authentic as hell.
absolutely agreed, as a die hard Van Halen fan, and a classic country lover, this is the shit and he is keeping the REAL country legacy alive!
He is the now day Marty Robbiins, and thats some big boots and hat that he fits perfecly
Finally a man with taste
I got sent to Saskatchewan for 4 ish months on a work assignment. Colter Wall got me through it all.
This is one of the most country western sounding song of all time. Shades of Willie’s writing and tone. Reminds me of the westerns I watched with my grandfather 💪🏼
The original was sung by eddy Arnold
@@willbordenave3326 Eddy has range! Much respect.
You need to check out Don Edwards

This is my absolute favorite song by him. Its so peaceful and I just want to play my guitar in front of a campfire with some whiskey
It’s not his song.
@@Noname-hc2mk He is singing it, it's by him. Not from him whether it's his or not.
@@taylor080697 no issues enjoying Colter’s version- great voice. But it helps to understand the root of the song and how it came to be some 70+ years ago by our previous generation and the times they lived. Stan Jones is the guy who wrote it, and also Ghost Riders in the Sky. Over the years other great singers covered it: Eddie Arnold in 62, Glen Campbell, Hank Williams Jr, etc. Colter is in good company.

Oh my. Didn't know Colter could get that high! Incredible, once in a lifetime voice! I would love to hear him cover some of Johnny Cash's songs
It's called falsetto
@@stevenpekrul9647 I realize that. But he has a low, baritone voice. Didn't think he could go that high and have that much control still.
my thought exactly
He can only hit those notes when he uses the falsetto technique, it’s basically the voice a guy would use to imitate a girl. Literally anybody can do this with their voice no matter how deep, but it takes a skilled vocalist to hit the notes obviously. He definitely can’t hit these notes with his regular voice, which is normal for someone with that deep of a voice.
Round up song he does a yodel or two
Colter shakes the dust off of these old tunes in his own unique fashion. He's going to be around for a long time and understandably so.
Man his voice just grips your soul.
The slight whistle off his tongue at “might spend all summer” (2:28) is what gets me every time with this song
Wow, that's paying close attention, i paused and rewinded it just to experience it, you're right. Good ear!
Great ear

Colter Wall is one my favorites!!! I hope to see him in concert out west someday before I die. He and his music is a dying breed!!! Love him!!!
This guy really grows on you. The first time I heard Colter I thought he was good. He is truly great. Deep soul! The real deal.
Colter is the thing I go find when I need the dust around me to settle

It reminds me of the feel of broke in cowboy boots, saddle leather and bob wire so rusted it’s only still up outta force of habit.

Colter is beyond talented. I mean his voice is just incredible. I love the story behind each and everyone of his pieces. He's just amazing
I love his voice, but doesn't he sound different than in the brewery sessions? I still love both versions of him, but correct me if I'm wrong☺️

Lean doerzz baby!!! Sadboyzz for life.
I legit listened to this song and that was my first reaction too.. Wish i could show my old man this kid and just hang back and talk about how good it is. The simple stuff is what I miss the most. RIP
My Daddy was a cowboy, in his manners, his determination, his way with large animals, and for his way of life. He loved the old cowboy songs from the trails. He loved chuckwagons. And he would have LOVED this song.... He is humming along in Heaven every time I hear Colter sing.
Thank you S.A.D.B.O.Y. for stating all of that better than I did!
I hope I will see him live soon. He's my absolute favorite singer
I think everyone should see his shows live at least once. I saw him twice already
Saw him at Codfish Hollow by Maquoketa IA last fall. Outside the barn, my wife (Bren) and I moved by one of the fire pits occupied by two others in an attempt to soak in a little warmth before the show. I noticed a group making their way to our location, anonymous to the throngs passing by. Up sauntered the young star of the night, one Mr. Colter Wall and his band sans the bass player. I recognized him immediately, offered a hello and a thank you for playing at such a small unique place. He in turn offered a handshake and thanked us for coming out to see him. For 15 minutes we talked about his music (of course), other songs, the bizarre venues he’s played and even Cormac McCarthy (a fav of both of ours). Then, I asked for a picture of him with Bren (and me) and he graciously obliged. The pose and flashes alerted others who finally recognized him and the picture taking began in earnest. After satisfying everyone who wanted a picture he thanked us again, told us he’d see at the show then shook my hand again as he left. Polite, humble young man, Canadian nice, discernible intelligence. 23 years old at the time??? Wow. Lyrics reminiscent of Townes Van Zandt meets the Man in Black with the vocal rumblings of John Lee Hooker, several octaves below Gordon Lightfoot with a cold. My guess is countless singer-songwriter wannabe's would surgically augment their vocal cords to croon for the notes Colter Wall gained by birthright. What a great show.
Bob's a nerd got to see him twice this year. Just saw him do this song in Boise less than a week ago

Saskatchewan is a gem
Searching for "New" old school style country and came across this. I am not disappointed at all. In an era when country sounds like hip hop, this keeps my hopes alive that country ain't dead.
He makes me proud to be a Saskatchewan fellow.
He sings of a time that is gone but it doesn't make it any less better
Yeah, the Old West is gone. They say it ended when the Census Bureau closed the frontier in 1890.
Others claim it lasted until the admission of Arizona Territory as a state in 1912.
In fact, there are still real cowboys out there even if those days of old are gone.

I showed this song to my 9 year old son last week. He's been putting in 80 hr weeks at the oil fields ever since.
No matter how many times I hear this song, it's no less sweet. And it's no less bitter that I didn't grab that 44 Martin OM Mahogany when I had the chance. Colter's found the perfect balance of bitter and sweet. I can't stop listening to this song.

Grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, this is refreshing, i know there is so much good country out there, the woke radio wont play!
Finally an artist that understands what western is!!!! I’ve listened to a large portion of Colter’s music and as a man from Wyoming, this is it.
I dunno what it is about Colter but every time I hear him perform it feels like he opens up a window to the past for me. Like he's giving me a glimpse of what used to be... it's magical. I can't get enough.
I’m sad that I am just now discovering this but now I can’t stop listening.
He was smoking cowboy killers right out of the womb, love his music! Need more Colter Wall!!!!
Ive heard Cowpoke live and I've found two videos of Colter singing it. If I don't find it on the next album, ill be real sad
The song is only 3x older than Colter it is due to be released again!
They should use this video as the album version, it sounds great
I tried finding it on iTunes but 🧐
I want his next album to be just covers. Should be this, Bury Me Not On The Lone Prairie, Ride Me Down Easy, The Randall Knife, I Ride An Old Paint, and Wabash Canonball.
Check out the song from Dave Stamey. On buckaroo. Man album
I cannot believe how silky smooth yet gruff this man's voice is. Watching him sing this live is ethereal and I'm so happy I found his music a few years ago...
There’s still some country left I’m highly impressed
I have never been a fan of Country music until I heard this man sing.
I'm from Prescott, so hearing you absolutely KILL this song makes me proud, brother.
Never heard someone sing the word "beans" so beautifully.
I listened to this in my apartment … it is now a home stead on the plains
Dude holy shit. I literally dont even listen to this kind of music but this is shattering me
Face of a boy, voice of a man who’s lived 1000 years

I think it’s so cool that along with his musical career he still works on his ranch. That’s just admiring to me for some reason. Seems like he is a 20th century man.
Now why have I not heard this song on the radio, don't make a lick of sense to me. Amazing in fine detail.!
The day my daughter was born I found this song and sang it to her and she still gets that big smile every time it comes on
Never a fan of country until he came along. His voice gives me the chills, in a good way, and I'm kind of an old fart. He deserves tons more recognition.
Best song yet... Lovin the ribbon hatband and clean cut hair. Keep it up Colter!
Anyone from a small town or desperation of release from binds from a town they're from I feel relates to this beautiful song
