    Colter is an insane mix of Cash, Townes, Billy Joe Shaver, Waylon, Willie, Steve Earle and probably a few more I'm missing. He is country to be sure but it is more that Texas singer songwriter thing than the next George Jones. Dude has the chops, the voice, and especially the songs to the next great one. He takes all his influences and jells them into something all his own and it's just too cool for school. Killer lyrics.

    LYRICS:
    Mr Toronto man go away from my door,
    you've got my wheat and canola seed;
    you're asking me for more. Better fly before I produce my 44.
    I'm just a prairie boy, never meant none no harm.
    Spent my days making wages out on the Martin's farm.
    No eastern boy's gonna twist my arm.
    It's so damn cold out here, the wind will cut you half in two
    I ain't kidding now, my old plow is frozen to my mule
    I've been living off of ice cold rainbow stew
    Don't be picking fights with no Mennonites
    Don't be raising cane while they're planting grain and working through the night.
    They're gonna let you know if you ain't acting right
    Mr Toronto man go away from my door,
    you've got my wheat and canola seed;
    you're asking me for more. Better fly before I produce my 44.

    It don’t matter a speck what label you wanna toss at this young hoss, that there is mighty fine music! This man represents the salvation of country music from the jaws of modern, commercial, lyrically impotent Country-Rap (C-RAP). Steve Earle so eloquently describes modern country as “hip-hop for people who are afraid of black people”. Make mine “Outlaw Country” and I reckon the genre will survive! Who needs all these “purty boys” anyhow?!?

    I didn't make it as far as Saskatchewan in my trip to Canada earlier this month, but I had this and many other of his songs on my playlist while on long bus rides from Calgary to Alberta and back. Listening to his sage old man's voice while I looked out the window at the rolling prairies and cragged mountains really brought it home for me.
