  • The Basics, Intense Sensations, Safety & More || FACEBOOK LIVE EPISODE || Irene Lyon
    Every month I do a Facebook LIVE in my open, free, Facebook Community Healthy Nervous System Revolution. This is the recording of the LIVE Broadcast Lecture + Q&A call I did on July 18, 2017. I dive into some basics on what the nervous system actually is, why it gets sick when it doesn't release stress and trauma and why nutrition isn't the only solution when healing the body.
    I also answer some specific questions from the group and a few of the commonly asked questions around dealing with intense sensations (i.e., how to handle anxiety and panic attacks), how to choose the right practitioner to help with your healing journey, how to restore cellular safety back to the nervous system and more! ENJOY!

    A wealth of a-ha’s here! I’m certified in the following… Yoga, meditation, Celtic Reiki, hypnosis, emotional freedom technique, neurolinguistic programming, ancestral clearing and DNA healing, and life coach and yet I’m still struggling with anxiety and major gut issues! 😒 All of this precognitive information is making so much sense now. My mother was definitely not a cuddly attentive mom; who let me know that I was not the boy she had expected and that I threw up all over her for a whole year; and then was in hospital for a while having surgery on an umbilical hernia when I was two years old. 😒
    I truly appreciate all of this information and what you are sharing with the world! 🙏🙏🙏

      @@IreneLyon To me, f ex. that one can act as if functioning in a social or relationship situation, and seemingly manage quite well although it is a kind of playacting, pretending with shutting off symptoms and reactions. I have thought this to be part of intelligence, out of fear of being totally shut out of community if behaving too differently and oddly .I knew I am not being insincere/false, but was not sure what I have been doing.

      Hi @@Medietos, Jen here from Team Lyon. The desire to connect is strong, and, as you describe, we may often override underlying feelings and physiological responses in order to stay in connection. However, this is a very different experience, and much harder on the physiology, than what we experience when we grow access to the underlying ventral vagal physiology that's designed to support social connection.
      A personal example is that as I was healing social anxiety I became more skilled at connecting socially, but by chest would still get tight and it would be hard to breathe when I was in the presence of other people (and especially groups). As I worked with my nervous system to grow regulation and capacity, I was able to be with people and breathe more easily (literally). This is one example of what can change as we do this work. In a nutshell, many things become easier and more accessible as we grow access to the physiology that supports our desired behaviors.

    Hi, Irene. I have studied bio energy work and am certified in emotional release but you bring it all together. I just connect with you so much. Even though I can work with others, I struggle myself with severe anxiety and depression. I don't like to take medication so SE seems to be a way out for me. Looking at early childhood I can see some patterns that would have developed setting my autonomic nervous system up for where I am at today. It gets complicated. Thank you so much. I knew I have had a very traumatic childhood, but I had no idea that it could lead to such illness later on in life. And gosh, those examples you shared about what kind of trauma that can happen in early years, which we have no memory of. It just got me thinking of this incident that happened when I was around 1-2 years old. My brother was swimming in the pool. He had just learned swimming, and I jumped into the pool because I was so sure I could swim as well. I have no memory of it. But my family has mentioned it several times. I have never thought about it before now. But that must have been quite traumatic for a little girl. I wonder if that incident actually was the reason why I later on was so afraid of water. When we started swimming lessons in school. I just couldn't stand it, I was so afraid of choking on water...

Im happy to keep regulating and also celebrate some achievments i have done in this healing trauma journey that started with support groups for childhood trauma, with a more emotional based approach and happy to integrate the body and survival energies to keep regulating from this point as well i think it puts it all together have had emdr and also 7 months of SE , and 2 years and 7 months of support groups for childhood trauma where i learned a lot about boundaries and emotional reparenting and processing, and had support of peers (not profesionals) so on that side it could be tricky..

    Hi Irene, I have been watching a lot of Irene’s videos. I’m going to do the 21 day tune up and I’m considering the sbsm. I feel like my trauma is pre verbal, maybe even from my maternal line as it manifested in depression from 18 And my mum and grandmother also had depression and anxiety. Your comment about “the world is unsafe Abs people are unsafe and (I’ve heard Irene say this in another vlog) there’s no point to anything and we’re all going to die so what’s the point of doing anything “ is absolutely my core thoughts. I have been on very high medication and slowly dropped it but the sensations Are often overwhelming. My physical health is not terribly although I’m quite overweight. I refer to Irene’s comments around the 52-60 minute mark she talks about this and how a Somatic Practice practitioner uses touch to help with this. I am in a country town in Australia and there isn’t a practitioner here that works with this Core cellular level. What do you advise in this circumstance. Would online work still be ok?
    Thanks.

    My body is in a state of absolute shock both childhood and adulthood issues. I know this inside and out intellectual. Now I have crippling tension, screaming on movement, memory loss, the lot. I tried to push myself out of freeze without safety as I was and am so f-in angry. Now, here is the question- I’m 38, a lot of this is from my mother, she was a victim also. She’s now a completely different person. She’s willing. She wants to help me. I want her to help me. But her touch makes me want to vomit. Do I build the healing through the hands that are willing to hold me, but they are the ones that hurt me? The source. #kundaliniiawakeningfosho😞

    • @teamlyon3109
      @teamlyon3109 3 роки тому

      Hi Kathryn, Seth here from Team Lyon. Great question. I think that it may be more useful to first to receive healing touch work from a professional instead of your mom, as it may be important to build some capacity and regulation before renegotiating your system's response to her. That being said, if she is open to you expressing yourself and wouldn't then feel blamed or defensive, there could also be power, eventually, in receiving her touch and allowing the reactions. For example, if she was giving you some supportive touch, and you felt the urge to vomit, you could then move into expressing that visceral disgust with sounds, facial expressions, etc... But yes, it may be important to work with someone not so entangled with your system at first.

    the getting out of freeze explanation may have confused me. I experience freeze around a certain trigger that i wont get into at the moment. So it isn`t like a constant. When i experience this response its like thinking from the amygdala etc, in an emotional flashback but actually freeze is a better way to refer to this point that the person asked about. So it isnt like a permanent state. I can do exercises , pete walker 13 steps for managing emotional flashbacks and a couple sensory meditations may help , as well as orienting , grounding or whatever, may help me regulate again. i guess my journey has been different because i didnt get started in somatic work until 7 months ago, and to be honest it has been really helpful. I dont know how regulated i am, but i enjoy having access to healthy anger to keep myself safe when necesarry and other forms of red energy for creativity etc. I enjoy having fun also, using the other pathway that pete levine talks about thats about fun, curiousity, resilience, safety, creativity, flow. I also enjoy socializing a lot and connecting, its one of my favorite things to do, and that was targeted by my early and developmental trauma, but as I am feeling safer and have worked on boundaries and expressing myself authentically safely, and choosing people that feel right to get needs met and reciprocal, value myself more and a lot of healing it has become something that i really like , and helps me corregulate yet also be a source of great fun .

    Is it even possible to have healthy relationships, career, doing what you love while you are doing this work? or do you need to heal your nervous system first? I'm doing the 21 days tune up programme.

    • @teamlyon3109
      @teamlyon3109 3 роки тому +2

      Hi Slava, Jen here from Team Lyon. Great to hear you're doing the 21 Day Tune Up! As far as your question goes, it really depends. For example, it can depend on the state of someone's life and their ability to navigate it as they start to do this work as well as on the level of dysregulation in their nervous system.
      In some cases, we can titrate the work a bit more to soften the intensity/impact of what emerges. It can also be helpful to talk to people in your life about the fact that you're doing this work, and what some of the implications of that may be.
      It's also important to remember that there's no end point. Often as we do the work things tend to progressively shift and change, and our access to our authenticity and ability to align with what's deeply important to us deepens and grows.

    I feel i have a confusion regarding what you have mentioned in 1:10:00 or after when you said if i am in a freeze mode trapped emotions will not release?
    So how to release to trapped emotions when i am dissociated? Is all what i have to do is to provoke myself to switch to fight or flight mode ?
    I have dpdr for a year and a half induced by OCD, the thought was i am fearing to get schizophrenia.
    This huge amount of fear with no ability to fight or flight leads me freeze which ofcourse dissociation.

      @teamlyon3109 3 роки тому

      Hi Viking v, Jen here from Team Lyon. What Irene is speaking to is that when nervous system is in shut down mode, we typically don't have access to the underlying emotions, sensations and more that want to express and release as part of the healing process.
      When this is the case, we need to first do the work to shift out of freeze mode. Sometimes this doesn't take much - shifting attention to the here and now, doing what we call orienting, bringing what we call containment to the nervous system - and other times we may have quite a long standing pattern of being in shut down.
      When we've been in freeze/shut down for quite a while, it can often take some time and nuanced support to coax the system out of freeze. We also don't want to do this too quickly or forcefully as there may be a LOT of energy underneath the freeze and it can be destabilizing and/or intense if we open up to too much too fast.
      I'll link to a few of Irene's related resources if you'd like to learn more. She also introduces the "how" of working with the nervous system in her online course, the 21 Day Nervous System Tune Up.

      Freeze happens when "all else fails". It could be that your system sees it as the only or best way to cope in situations that are too intense to be with.
      It can be seen as a pattern - and patterns can be interrupted and changed.

    Hey Irene. I'm struggling with what you say and the presence teachings from Eckhart Tolle. It seems like he's helping many people, but I don't understand how one should be present with the emotions without identifying with them. If I don't, I don't live the "story" fully and they feel repressed, like an "unripe", wrong, stuck feeling.
    Do you have any videos on this kind of approach and are you experienced with Tolle's teachings? Thank you very much!

    • @teamlyon3109
      @teamlyon3109 4 роки тому +1

      Hi YouHolf,
      Nicole here from Team Lyon.
      I'm not familiar enough on Eckhart Tolle's work to speak to it. But I can share a bit about this work and suggest a few videos and resources to help you explore this work if it interests you.
      One thing to consider when noticing emotion is the felt sensations in the body. For some people it might not be clear on what the emotion is, but there can be some attention brought on these sensations and that can be helpful in working towards moving through and piecing together parts of the experiences (vs getting stuck or feeling like you're repressing something). That being said it does depend on the capacity/ability someone has to be with these experiences because sometimes it can be "too much".
      We want to work towards regulation - being able to respond as needed and then come back into feeling safe and connected which is not always possible for people who have a lot of trauma on board and tend to instead be more dysregulated in their responses.
      That's where the importance of this work comes in. It's about supporting the nervous system to move out of being stuck in fight/flee or shutdown energy.
      Irene has so many videos that cover this topic from all kinds of angles.
      This playlist is a good place to start - ua-cam.com/play/PL_tIcR-r0CU75sZ1r9E7CyjAVWKSzBUfZ.html

      StarGalaxy, yes, for sure, this could create intense fear. It's important to see a healthcare practitioner to rule out anything medically related. If you've done that, than offering signals of safety and support to your physiology will be important. If it's an option, it would be very helpful to have the support of a trained nervous system practitioner.

      Hi Shannon Clark, Seth here from team Lyon. We do see this happen sometimes in the work we do, but I should be clear that we are NOT doing brain retraining exercises. All the exercises you mention can actually be very overwhelming for a system that is holding unresolved trauma, and we do not recommend any of these practices for that reason.
      When it comes to trauma we can't rewire by working with the brain because in the context of unresolved trauma the brain is what we call an 'end organ' - it is not driving the bus, it is reacting to the overall physiology and survival patterns in the nervous system which ARE driving the bus. So when one does the kind of exercises you describe, it can override the physiology and create some pretty severe consequences. I HIGHLY suggest checking out Irene's free, three-part video training, Healing Trauma, so you can get some deeper education on what is needed to really rewire the nervous system. It's happening now! irenelyon.com/healing-trauma-youtube/

      @@teamlyon3109 Oh dear, that is too bad, thank you for telling us that brain re-training ex's can mess us up. But is it good if i feel well by it? F ex, on the rare occasions I lie down and do relaxation meditation, visualizing the organs I have issues with, and send positive, healing, creative images, and stay on 1 organ until there is a sigh of relief (yawn). This happened on all organs except the kidney system, which I suppose has too much stresses to be able to relax, w very little sleep. Also, deep breathing I feel well by, when I manage to do some for 2 mins (I was told to do it 15 mins daily for sleep, by nutrition therapist).I have been taken my home, rights, will to live and money and feel in constant threat to my life and very unsafe and afraid, + am rather isolated. I don't have money for Irene Lyons courses, might I join for free, please?

      @@Medietos, I believe that the type of brain retraining exercises that Seth is referring to above are different from what you describe. There is definitely a place for practices that are calming to the system, and focusing on the stress organs in particular may help to grow a foundational sense of safety in the system. It sounds like what you're doing is working for your system - I encourage you Trust your system's response. Irene does not typically allow people into her programs for free. And there's Fawn

      Yup. The Fawn is part of that shutdown/freeze ... collapse physiology survival systems.

      Irene Lyon yah. Hi Irene". ,:-). I was thinking that way as I thought. You'd know so you did not put that for a reason is. It is also under the header of freeze. Saying. Freeze /, Fawn. Not freeze and ,/ or Fawn, more appropriately xo. Haha. What a spiel

    Wow, Irene, I felt so moved to you and all your education... until this video. i am highly disappointed to hear you recommending dead animals saying that is healthy for a human being... that is what made me sick, and i started healing when i went vegan. And the brain is not made of fat at all, it is made of sugars. i would not speak on this subject if you are not actually fully knowledgable first. Thanks.

      sylvie grondin wheres your evidence that the brain is just made up of sugars? The tissue of the brain is clearly fat, which you could go do your own research on. Before you start calling others misinformed, you should look at your own information. Which is clearly misinformed, and biased towards veganisim.

      The brain is largely made of fat: it uses a lot of energy (sugars).. Perhaps that’s the confusion?

      Most nerve fibers inside and outside the brain are wrapped with many layers of tissue composed of a fat (lipoprotein) called myelin.
