    if you think about it you can use the first hook to push your body the other direction witch adds more power a lot quicker as you say in position.

    weight transfer rotation, key to most sports.. also note travs snap in the contact phase when he hits the hardest (second last hit at 1:37) hes tightening his arm rapidly and this snap tension can be aided by the entire body, but not so much you cant finish the follow through

    The thing is, when leaning far to either side you're telegraphing your punch as opposed to throwing from your shoulder. it's a good idea not to overextend with the knuckles though.

  • @Exploremorefishing
    @Exploremorefishing 10 років тому

    That explains why my shoulders hurt after hitting the bag, I constantly try to hit through the bag which always leaves my arm in some weird position putting strain on my shoulder , gonna try this today and see if it makes a difference

    Grear tip!! I've found that using this technique helps me keep some energy that didn't need to be used. A great video I would be interested to see would be how to absorb a punch or kick. Thanks Trav keep up the good work!!
    (and great slow mo by the way!!)

    • @Xellos357

      Actually, how to "take a hit" would be an excellent video!

    • @zwoope
      @zwoope 10 років тому

      Xellos357 Roll with it and do not freeze up. After you have taken it cover, move, and counter out. A lot of guys chase, so learn to throw a right with a back step and check hooks and uppercuts. You'll be knockin' fools out in no time.

    • @Xellos357
      @Xellos357 10 років тому

      Good advice man!

    • @zwoope
      @zwoope 10 років тому

      Xellos357 When you get good at it you can take one stand in and dip under and give a solid counter at an angle or flip them into the corner. People don't like him, but, James Toney is a really good example of this. As well as Pac in the Rios fight.

  • @josecalderon9487
    @josecalderon9487 10 років тому

    I can see how the full pivot turn can generate more power but wouldn't that compromise your defenses? This probably would work best when your opponent is already wobbled or in a full defensive guard and you'll have that extra second for the longer wind-up.

  • @f4ust85
    @f4ust85 9 років тому +6

    I am sorry but this sounds like an equivalent of saying that instead of doing proper muay thai roundkicks that chop through the target and basically aim way behind it, its actually better to do karate-style snappy kicks that just whip there and back lightly and bouce off the target lightly, so that you dont "lose all that momentum". Isnt it the very point of striking to actually "waste" a shitload of energy onto someones skull or body? I understand its much more comfortable to train like that on a bag but thats all.

    Where's the "we need more power!" guy? You needed at least a voiceover from him for this! But, yes, I will try this tip you've given. I'm guilty of really laying my hook in as hard as I can, but then again I'm using it for exercise, so I don't mind the extra energy. I think the way you do it here packs all the whallop a punch needs; it definitely seems like plenty! I go to class in an hour; I'll work on it...and maybe it'll speed up my combinations.... thanks a lot, Trav!

    defensively, if you miss the punch or if your opponent slips the punch then this technique leaves you open on the side you threw the hook from so i imagine its quite easy to get countered once your opponent becomes aware of this tendency

    I know it's an older video, but I still have a question. If your opponent dodges the first punch, what's going to stop him from hitting you face? Could be a instant knockout or am I wrong?

  • @RicardoPenders
    @RicardoPenders 5 років тому

    Can you tell me why my wrists hurt when I would punch on a bag like you do and when I punch people I don't seem to have that problem that I'm hurting myself, I even punched a metal door once that took the skin off my nockels and left a couple dents from my nockels on the metal plated door but that was when I lost control of my emotions so I couldn't feel any pain whatsoever at the time but it was so brutal I can't forget that moment.
    I do have martial arts experience in Taekwondo and that's a lot of leg work not punching a bag with a lot of weight in it, I mean it's pretty heavy... What am I doing wrong?
    I wish you the best,
    Ricardo Penders
