Trevor Wittman and Justin Gaethje discuss power with punches in this fight training video.
Trevor Wittman is a renowned striking and combat coach. Justin Gaethje is an accomplished Mixed Martial Artist and UFC veteran. This is an excerpt from SECRETS TO POWER available from DynamicStriking.com.
Dynamic Striking was started by a pair of black belts (Bernardo Faria & Michael Zenga) who feel that nothing is more important than improving your striking skills as much as possible in the least amount of time. Their aim was to create a shop for students interested in striking who don’t look at mixed martial arts as a sport - but as a lifestyle.

Could you enlighten us mere mortals what accolades uncle Chael deems fit enough for Trevor to make him not so underrated? Coty seems pretty good to me. Makes him quite highly rated it would seem to me but you think that's not enough? Well I suppose I've got to change my mind now.

When I first learned striking in Shotokhan as a young boy, they taught us to turn over our punches or to “knock” at the end of them, but never explained why or when. They would just watch you and say “NO!”AGAIN “NO!”. If they would’ve explained the theory… Jesus. Amazing stuff, sensei.

I've been doing boxing/muay thai for a bout a year and I kept hurting my hand doing pad work (especially rear hook). I was trying to avoid doing those winged hooks which are so easy to see coming. Now I realize it was because I was turning over the punch. It was so damn hard on the bag but felt weird and hurts like fuck on pads. Glad to know there's a reason for that. Thought I just had hand problems. Great vid. Very informative.

What a wonderful video! Trevor’s an amazing teacher but Justin seems to be a great student as well, it’s not easy to let go of old technical habits and muscle memory, you need to have discipline and, more importantly, you have to really trust the person who is suggesting you to change them. The chemistry, trust and respect these two have for one another is inspiring, not just for fighters but for any teacher-student relationship. Thanks for sharing this jewel!

A great way to practice the chopping shots is with both hands out a little extended from a high guard, palms facing opponent and squared stance (think roy jones jr) then you can chop down with either hand non telegraphed.
Of course this tactic isnt the most practical way to execute it but i think it can help others start to feel the mechanic

Trevor is such a good coach. I literally quit mma because I got hurt badly and lost a fight and when I reassessed if I want to fight again In saying to my family and myself if i ever ended up against justin thst i would get hurt again badly maybe. No one is the same after a JG fight as justin brings it. So I realized my body wasn't going to last long enough to run into the likes of justin. What I can say is this; Trevor has taught him the most powerful body shot in existence. Justin is walking past is target nearly leaving the power of that motion to a single point in his hand pointed up to compress the diaphragm. Deadly. it could kill you if you weren't ready. The next one is a hook. Throwing the hand out at an angle with the palm exposed and using the hips to finish it off as it whips against the opponents jaw closing the quarter circle hook with elbow tucked at your side and this is truly safe for the hands and incredibly powerful. Whitman and justin are scarey combo. Those 2 shots are super powered and Whitmans looks s tad faster

I know what was taught to gaethje and this isn't normal boxing. This type of shot is karate made to fit boxing, a strike of devastation. That body shot is scary cause I know its power. If justin were to set this up and walk past his opponent leaving the power in his fist my God. No wonder he is so good. Honestly Whitman knows too much. It all makes sense now as to how justin was moulded into the machine he is today. He's a terminator. Next time justin faces islam or anyone in 155 he's gonna win. He's listening and knows his coach is elite knowledge. You could run justin and Dustin again and would be same result as last. This guy JG terrifies me more now than he did when I quit cage fighting. Fk me he is s scary good now and Holloway must have a screw loose to fight justin. Good job to Whitman. He made a champ. Just need islam to agree to the fight. Which I'm wondering if he will. Holloway is just the next victim in Justin's way. Poor kid man he won't have legs after. It's like feeding sean O'Malley to Mike tyson in his prime. I swear no one gets it justin is ending careers, imagine that leg kick landed ffs. How guys pretend those don't hurt is really why guys are in UFC. Sometimes I wonder if justin knows how deadly he looks or how far he has come just in the last 2 years.

Wish like hell I could have competed professionally. 5 amateur fights in 2009-2012 w/ 5-0 record but being 5'6 walking around at 165lb i almost had to compete at 135lb (and still be shorter than most). The weight cut was just to brutal. My natural WC would have been 155lb having me fight people much taller with a much longer reach than me. Ultimately I never transitioned to pro and now being 33 years old I regret not transitioning pro to 145lb, especially seeing Volk's success at my same height. Still out here soaking all this stuff in though! Best striking coach in the game right here. Technique builds power folks.
