For those getting annoyed with doing the same setup routine for 3ds games again and again, you can use windows batch file to automate in one click. I used it with my dual screen desktop setup.
The dual-screen aspect misses the mark for me a bit (the device is way overkill and way overpriced for DS/3DS emulation, and I don't think hacking a screen mirror is worth it), but it's making me happy since it's - I think - the only PC handheld on the market at the moment that has controls below the screen. When it comes to Citra and getting both screens to be "fullscreen" on separate monitors it goes as follows: Open and choose a game. After it's launched toggle the separate screens and move the second screen to the second monitor. Close Citra completely. Open it back up and when you choose a game, the screens should start out in separate windows. Move the second window to the second monitor and use the fullscreen hotkey to go fullscreen. Put the main screen's window back in focus by clicking it, use the hotkey for fullscreen. Now both are in full screen. However, not sure how well this will translate to Flip DS, but it should work the same as it's still happening in Windows.

I love that you thought of so many different use cases and showcased them all. Very good examples. I personally want something like this but I don't need it to play modern PC games since I have a Steam Deck and Legion Go. I definitely wanted to get my hands on an Aya Neo Flip DS just so I can personally enjoy the best modern experience playing DS and 3DS games as well as Wii U games for me to play on the bus as well as whatever PC games I would have a hard time to get running on my Steam Deck, either because of storage or technical.

The 45 degree volume button makes complete sense: when you’re holding the controls you use the thumb I change the volume. The thumb naturally moves at a diagonal when you move it up and down. It’s perfect thoughtful design. Think about how when you’re holding and using it
Thanks for the review! I’ve been waiting for a hands-on look before deciding to take the plunge and pick one up. The price isn’t an issue for me but that occulink issue and the hoops needed for borderless bottom screen emulation is a deal breaker for the time being.
Those use cases are all so fun and cool. Hadn't even considered VMUs! Fingers crossed that this gets enough attention to garner a new version with improved comfort, better controls, and better sound.
That price is crazy. I just got a surface duo and a gamesir x2 for under $400.00. Dual screen gaming with 2 oled screens of the same size, with up to around Switch level peformance. You should get the duo 2 for a little better performance. Plus you can remove the controller and you have a little folding digital diary like form factor.
Lots of Wii U games, Wind Waker and Twilight princess included, in Cemu are compatible with the Pro controller, which means that you don't really need a second screen if you are playing emulating that controller
WAY too many people complaining about the price. To me that is insane. You are getting a FULL BLOWN windows PC with dual screens (one at 120hz) and good specs in a portable form factor smaller than most laptops for under $1000 (unless you go with the highest spec model). Most laptops and tablets with similar specs and features cost about the same and in some cases over $1000 and they only have 1 screen. The only real downside is the battery life but that is usually the case when a new device comes out, especially one like this. I'm not saying it's cheap, however the price is more than fair for what it offers especially when compared to the competition.
You can get a full gaming laptop for $650 straight from Lenovo with an actual dedicated graphics card, DDR5 memory, and a 144hz screen. This thing is interesting but you’d have to be insane to think it’s a good deal. It doesn’t even have a graphics card. The bottom screen on this thing probably costs $20 at max as well.

People were clamoring for the Retroid Pocket Flip to have a second screen for their niche use case, not realizing how much is required to make that happen and the cost the device would have to be. Now that we have this device, there's a lot of complaining over the price. It blows my mind that people think they can just *poof* things without any compromise
@markalexander5578 yes, that is my point. They were hoping to add a second screen and functionality that does not exist elsewhere without compromising the cost. That's not how things work, you have to pay more for that at this time.
to be fair the price has nothing to do with the second window, and more to do with the fact that it has the highest end PC processor they can fit into the form factor. Worst case the RP flip would cost an extra 75 bucks and some people would gladly pay that.
I love the clamshell design I just got the retroid flip last year and i love it I dont quite have money for something like this but its definitely on the wish list
I like the idea, but not the price. I wish Ayaneo can get their pricing improved, they aren't gonna be here much longer if they don't. I'm sure this is awesome, but there ain't an ice cubes chance in heck I'll ever buy it. Great job as always Russ!
I don't think they have much of an option or they probably would. It speaks more to Valve and Asus that they can subsidize as much as they can to bring down the price, not the other way around.
I saw all these price comments before I started watching and was like "how bad could it be?" Lmao. I would just buy a Steam Deck and deal with putting the second screen in a corner or something. $1k is crazy.
Materials have costs. Suppliers have costs, paying people to design and manufacture is a cost. Shipping parts and materials is a cost. These things aren’t just magic. It’s almost a miracle it’s this cheap to begin with and requires almost slave labor and deep shipping subsidies to achieve this price.
@@KyleMc16It is more powerful than the Deck. It's basically an Ally with options for more storage/ram to push it over that $1k mark, while being smaller and having two screens. Kind of crazy, actually.

Excellent video, surprisingly it just makes me wonder more than anything else what Nintendo’s next console will be. Watching a TV Show and playing a game at once in the palm of your hands seems to good an idea to pass up.
I'd put money on Nintendo combining their two most successful platforms, the DS & NS in their next console, aka the Switch DS or Switch Duo, it's also another way to make Nintendo's hardware unique and indispensable, which share holders love, as it cuts down on emulation and piracy for a good chunk f the devices life span, the Switch was indispensable for many years just because it was portable, until the Steam Deck came along, a Switch DS would be even more so, not to mention DS gaming consoles are really nice, and this video really show cases how much untapped potential there still is for a modern DS portable console, it would also mean legit DS and 3DS Virtual Consoles would be possible. Or imagine co-op games and being able to see your friend's screen, or just streaming other players screens to the second screen while you play, in an FPS shooter where teamplay is important it would allow you to properly direct each other if you can see what each other is doing, or imagine Mario Kart online multiplayer and having your friends camera feed up so you can talk and interact with each other, so there is even use cases for multiplayer. I also love the idea of a gun scope or light gun games being playable via the second screen via touch.
Thanks for the great video. The more I see clamshell devices, the more I am super happy to own a few Nintendo DSL, 2ds XL and 3ds. Even though this device can play a lot of systems and can blow away any Nintendo devices in terms of pure power, you just can't beat the value, the experience, and the quality of old Nintendo hardware, especially when considering that I paid less than half for all of my devices combined.
This looks so amazingly good; I know some peoplle don't like this version and would get the built-in-keyboard one, but to me this thing is amazing.... I NEED one. Gonna have to save up for it....
There is a little space to make that bottom screen larger on the prototype, I know it is not that easy, or maybe possible. Hopefully they can utilize more space in the actual release, cannot really complain the way it is either way. This is a pretty impressive device, that mini map hack was pretty genius by the way.
My dream accessory would be an ultra slim, Steam Deck clamshell style second screen. Imagine plugging it in on the usb- c port of the steam deck, it centers sits/clips onto the top of the Deck, and when closed, it hinges shut to screen protect the deck. When Opened, Boom citra gold.
I got your response about the amiibo functionality on the system, I don't know why I decide to delete my question about it but Thank you for answering it.
I have a Win Mini which I love, but this is very tempting. Unfortunately, I've been using Linux almost exclusively since Yuzu gets much better performance at lower TDPs, and I suspect other emulators will be the same. The other thing, Sleep is flawless on Linux where windows has too many issues. Either way, I'll stick to my Mini, but not because I don't want one of these! The Mini is fantastic though, so no sacrifice.
I gotta say, even with my disdain for AYANEO, this is a FANTASTIC review! So detailed! I really appreciated all the testing with 3rd party apps to enhance the experience. It almost makes me want to get one.... almost. 😅
This thing is tempting for sure but man that price is really high. The size is really what makes this thing cool but to pay twice the price of the new oled steam deck which is also an emulation beast is a bit too far I think.
Nintendo's dual screen era was unique and always feels awkward being emulated in single screen devices which this seems to cater to. That said, foldable smartphones + controller are also an option for this use if not sticking with the original consoles.
i am so happy with my retroid flip that the more i see this review the more i think that the version with no second screen had more value if it only costs less than this one
In all windows devices battery life is too short, in fact, if someone interest is into retrogaming and not PC games an odin 2 can provide a smooth emulation until wii and your device will be fresh and full of energy.
@@SoulK37 And this device can't play Windows games for more than an hour or two, which is barely more useful. I already own a laptop, the only reason to have a portable like this is for portability, and with that battery life (which will only get worse as you use it) it doesn't have that.
I bought and modfied a "New" 3DS so I could play all my ds and 3ds games without needing an emulator. This device, working optimally, is the best alternative I've seen next to the Steam Deck.
would much prefer a way less powerful device. I'd really only want this for original DS games. That battery life is a shame. Hopefully this inspires some other companies to look into dual screens, I expect it is difficult to do though.
I love the concept. I think the DS formfactor is amazing. I just with the second screen wasn't so ridiculously tiny! I'd have preferred if they made the overall unit bigger, gave the upper screen a bit of bezel to make the shell uniform, but in exchange had both screens a similar size
That would put it below the cheapest steamdeck brand new. You have unreasonable expectations for a more powerful handheld PC with a second screen built in
@mountain342 that might be a solution, but it might also be much easier said than done. How many android devices have successfully implemented two screens?
@@davidcuellar7414 Seems odd to give it all that power. Just prices most people out, those that might use this (which you don't need a monster PC to emulate Wii U or 3ds games). Like, let's make a Hyundai with rims made out of gold?
@patron7906 my thought is that a lot of power (and resources from a company) is probably required to make this happen. I mean, otherwise we would have had these companies doing this already. We just recently started getting folding android phones at the absolute highest end, and I don't think it's a coincidence that they require the most amount of CPU power available and the cheapest ones start at around $1000.
Slider sticks would have been fine in my opinion. Lots of people don't like them, but it would have been better than the recessed full sticks in my opinion. Such a thorough review so far. Thanks for all your effort Retro Game Corps.
God I want this so bad for DS emulation but that price is way way way too high. Who on earth can afford this?! I could buy two steam decks and tape them together for this price.
Why pay so much to emulate DS when you can just get a hacked 3DS instead for a MUCH cheaper price? It's just a horrible idea to pay this much for this alone.
Though this does look a bit rough and prototype-y, I'm really glad to see someone trying this concept. I hope it does well enough for them to be able to comfortably iterate and release a second generation. I think that would be very neat to see. Unfortunately, I personally don't feel particularly compelled to have a full Windows PC in my hands, so I'd have to concede that I'm not really the target audience.
It's worth mentioning that AYASpace now has both virtual keyboard and virtual touchpad functionality for the lower screen, so there's no longer a need for third-party software to control input.

That battery life means it can’t do it for very long though…
@@NamelessNathan Fair answer! I can only begin to imagine the possibilities with this thing.
AYN needs to do an Odin DS. This type of setup makes more sense on mobile hardware just because it's way more power efficient.
Using the bottom screen for a dedicated, magnified mini-map is so cool! It's enthusiast know-how like this that consistently brings me back to his channel.
I think you may have misunderstood. That's just a standard Wii U feature from the gamepad.

That would be a great April fools prank
and then compare the size of the device to X snack
"This might be a long one, so grab your favorite retro game and relax."
For those getting annoyed with doing the same setup routine for 3ds games again and again, you can use windows batch file to automate in one click. I used it with my dual screen desktop setup.
I bet this gonna make like 3 people happy. Cool device none the less.
Over 500 people have ordered it on IGG
The dual-screen aspect misses the mark for me a bit (the device is way overkill and way overpriced for DS/3DS emulation, and I don't think hacking a screen mirror is worth it), but it's making me happy since it's - I think - the only PC handheld on the market at the moment that has controls below the screen. I like the Steam Deck, but I find wide handhelds pretty uncomfortable.
@@maciejstachowski183 its not
@@ADHDreams what else is there? GPD Win Mini or Max I guess, but those are even worse when it comes to price. Other than that all vertical/clamshell handhelds I know of are Android or Linux-based.
@@maciejstachowski183They honestly missed their target audience with this device by a MILE. They would’ve made bank if they had made it an almost plug and play emulation device like the Analogue Pocket but for 3DS/DS. They should’ve made it way weaker which in result would make it more portable and cheaper (Don’t need that much power for 1080p 3DS/DS emulation) and made both screen proportionate. Maaaaaybe add a parallax screen for 3D.
The market for a double screen powerful laptop is minuscule. The market for a powerful 3DS/DS emulation device is huge given current prices. A hacked 3DS is a much better deal for playing those games.
Very interesting device! But man, your review was simply brilliant! Deep, thorough, with lots of alternatives and ways to really squish the form-factor possibilities. Incredible work, thank you!
Watching a TV show while playing a game on a different screen on the same device. How far we’ve come. Also, my brain would hurt trying to do that in real life.
It's also kinda stupid cause you should play games you enjoy and not games that makes you feel bored so that you have to watch tv
@@Danny83Munichdoesn't mean the game is boring.
In some cases, maybe you're not as immersed in either, but different immersion level is not bored. In other cases, you could be using the show to shut out external distraction to better focus on the game. Time is finite, why choose one, when you can do both?
Obviously, if playing f2p, it's about ignoring the ads, grind, as much as possible. This does arguably fit your bored definition, but some people don't want to steal or pay or not play.
Just because it isn't relaxing or fun for you, doesn't mean others are stupid, especially if it works for them.
I do this! When I’m doing mindless grinding, I usually put on a tv show to watch while i press buttons 😂
Lots of people do that on their computer, or using a second device like a handheld or tablet.
@@washuai Even in non freemium games sometimes you can grind in a game while watching something and figure out what to do with your imaginary money and experience later.
When it comes to Citra and getting both screens to be "fullscreen" on separate monitors it goes as follows:
Open and choose a game.
"I probably missed some use cases" then proceeds to get a functional VMU on DEMUL on a second screen. 🔥
Oh my lord that battery life

This is such an interesting handheld DS device, Little bit of a frustrating. Shame that it's really expensive but it's really damn cool!
WOW you showcased so many uses for the second screen that I never would have thought of! Love the 3rd party apps info too!
This is the first handheld that's managed to get my attention since the Steam Deck. Thanks for the video.
Thats sad bc there have been tons of equally noteworthy handhelds come out and the steam deck is ugly, outdated, and cumbersome.
@@const3llations_370 Just because they haven't caught my attention doesn't mean they weren't noteworthy (or even that I would claim they weren't in any way). We each have our own priorities. The Steam Deck hit a sweet spot for me in bang to buck ratio. If I need more performance, I have my PC. The Flip DS is more $$$ than I'm willing to pay for a handheld, but its unique use cases are cool enough that it caught my eye despite this. I don't think there's anything sad about that.
The screen looks really really nice on this thing! Seeing how smooth the GameCube game was in the beginning was really cool!
Finally! Wanted a DS like PC to exist for ages, this looks so cool!
I want one where you can use original cartridges
@@bdel80oh that would be sick
I love that you thought of so many different use cases and showcased them all. Very good examples.
I personally want something like this but I don't need it to play modern PC games since I have a Steam Deck and Legion Go. So just powerful enough to emulate Wii U in exchange for more battery life and lower costs I would have much preferred. If I had no other PC handhelds this would be a great candidate
Thank you for doing “Pocketable” categories in your vids but also MODELLING them in your pocket. I’m primarily a handheld gamer, and pocketing my system is like in my top3 priorities. Great point 👍
This is probably the most tempting windows handheld I've seen. If the battery life was better (especially on lower end stuff) I'd consider getting one
Thanks for the review! I’ve been waiting for a hands-on look before deciding to take the plunge and pick one up. The price isn’t an issue for me but that occulink issue and the hoops needed for borderless bottom screen emulation is a deal breaker for the time being.
What an exciting journey we are in for today with this one team!
Those use cases are all so fun and cool. Hadn't even considered VMUs! Fingers crossed that this gets enough attention to garner a new version with improved comfort, better controls, and better sound.
Im amazed that no one else thought about making a better version of the ds
That price is crazy. I just got a surface duo and a gamesir x2 for under $400.00. Dual screen gaming with 2 oled screens of the same size, with up to around Switch level peformance. You should get the duo 2 for a little better performance. Plus you can remove the controller and you have a little folding digital diary like form factor.
Lots of Wii U games, Wind Waker and Twilight princess included, in Cemu are compatible with the Pro controller, which means that you don't really need a second screen if you are playing emulating that controller
I love the way this thing looks
im so impressed with how far handheld gaming has come this is crazy awesome
Love whenever I sit down for some Golden Sun and Family Guy😂 the juxtaposition there kills me. Great video as always.
I'm not saying it's cheap, however the price is more than fair for what it offers especially when compared to the competition.
u could just buy a steam deck and skip all this rubbish. switch && steam deck oled has me set for a while.
Got mine shipping next month, thanks a ton for including third party software fixes i was not looking forward to that setup

Once you miss out you wont see it again unless someone sells theirs broken
Bro this thing ain’t being forgotten
I’d been waiting this review from you Russ since I saw the device announcement.
Most people have less than zero idea of what it takes to design and produce a product of any kind. Let alone an electronic device.
Yeah, but the compromise is $600
@markalexander5578 yes, that is my point.
@@TheRealAlpha2Yeah, I'd much prefer a less powerful device with a lower cost, it seems unnecessary for what it is aiming to do.

I don't think they have much of an option or they probably would. It speaks more to Valve and Asus that they can subsidize as much as they can to bring down the price, not the other way around.
I saw all these price comments before I started watching and was like "how bad could it be?"
Lmao.
@@godminnette2 doesn't really matter much if the best you can do is around 2 hours of playtime, even if it's just playing emulators, even a non-OLED Steam Deck can stretch to 6 hours if you do some tweaking

Man, I was so interested in this until I saw the battery life. That's killer.
I know right! I’ve been eyeing the Lenovo Legion Go to upgrade from my Steam deck, but this looked even better for my main purposes of emulation. Hopefully updates fix it.
This is a pretty impressive device, that mini map hack was pretty genius by the way.
thats what the Flip DS2 is gonna be for

This thing is tempting for sure but man that price is really high. The size is really what makes this thing cool but to pay twice the price of the new oled steam deck which is also an emulation beast is a bit too far I think.
Nintendo's dual screen era was unique and always feels awkward being emulated in single screen devices which this seems to cater to. That said, foldable smartphones + controller are also an option for this use if not sticking with the original consoles.
This.
i am so happy with my retroid flip that the more i see this review the more i think that the version with no second screen had more value if it only costs less than this one
That battery life is disgusting. Makes the Odin 2 look like a beast
In all windows devices battery life is too short, in fact, if someone interest is into retrogaming and not PC games an odin 2 can provide a smooth emulation until wii and your device will be fresh and full of energy.
That's cus it is a beast. I get crazy battery life from mine, and a 65w charger charges it quick as hell.

Hopefully this inspires some other companies to look into dual screens, I expect it is difficult to do though.
The best option for ds games is to just buy a ds.
I love the concept. I think the DS formfactor is amazing. I just with the second screen wasn't so ridiculously tiny! I'd have preferred if they made the overall unit bigger, gave the upper screen a bit of bezel to make the shell uniform, but in exchange had both screens a similar size
The perfect $200-350 handheld. Which they are selling for $700-$900+
That would put it below the cheapest steamdeck brand new. You have unreasonable expectations for a more powerful handheld PC with a second screen built in
They need to make an android version of this console.

Why pay so much to emulate DS when you can just get a hacked 3DS instead for a MUCH cheaper price?
It's just a horrible idea to pay this much for this alone.
Dumb. Why would you buy a dedicated windows handheld to emulate ds when any phone can do it and you can buy a lightly used 3ds for 120 bucks on ebay
You can probably get a Microsoft duo tablet for cheaper as well. That’s just a book of full screen (3)DS goodness
