    Channing is good, fits in many songs, but Grohl is more powerul drummer. All the "Bleach" songs by Grohl bring more power and energy to the band. Peters is also great, truly punk drummer, but Grohl also punk, but more diverse. The best for me are Dale Crover and Dave Grohl.

      Yeah, Dan Peters was great!! People saying he sucked because he played it differently (and he fucked up the ending) - but who knows how long he had to learn the song, or many times he'd heard it.
      His right hand was great anyway. "Punk drummer" is right; good solid fast right hand.
      And he has a recognisable style with his fills. I didn't know his name, but you can guess he's the drummer from Mudhoney by his style.

      Best example of Dave being better with the energy for me is Blew. If you listen to the studio version of Blew vs the Paramount version, you can really see just how much of a difference Dave makes from Channing. And the Live and Loud version of Blew is awesome with the drums

    I really like Chad Channing's drumming the most, he wasn't the most technical, but he came up with the drum patterns, and it had a really nice swing to it, almost jazzy. :)

  • @gn86
    @gn86 7 років тому +69

    This is an interesting comparisation. As a drummer, I would say that Dan Peters is the technically most skilled drummer of the four, his chops in mudhoney are extraordinary. But he wasn't the right fit for Nirvana, although Sliver never sounded as good when Dave Grohl played his parts. Dale Crover is another amazing drummer that plays great on the bleach-tracks where he appears but as a stand-in for for that Nirvana tour he just wasnt that good either. Chad is without a doubt the least skilled drummer of the bunch, he would never be able to take the drum seat behind the Melvins nor Mudhoney but his style fits those bleach-era songs perfect. And then there's Dave Grohl, not as skilled as Peters, nor as interesting as Crover. But he was perfect for Nirvana, I think his performance is without a doubt the best in this comparison. Just goes to show that sometimes the most technically advanced drummers aren't necessarily the best fit.

    • @maddymud
      @maddymud 3 роки тому +4

      as you are someone who plays the instrument -- help me out. I find that the drummers who hit so hard, are usually sludgey, because they don't recover off the big hits. And then of course, the guys who swing it and great with light touch (which is what Channing seems like to me), don't make the song blast off as a RAWK song. That's why I like Grohl -- for me his power is undeniable -- he just blows those songs up, but he also is NOT sludgey. Things seem to skip along with him. He creates movement and he seems to feed off Kurt. Peters felt weird to me -- but to be fair -- he's a radical departure from how I've always heard the drums on this. He felt like he was playing on another song. Crover was closest to Grohl for me with power and time. But I felt Grohl edged him out with power.

    All of these drummers were great and brought something different too the table. Chad originally wrote the drum part, and he has that double bass (on one drum!) sound. Dale had a hard hitting, punishing style, which coming form the Melvins makes sense. Dan Peters played a fast, aggressive style, and you can really hear how much faster the tempo was with him at the kit. Finally, Dave is the iconic Nirvana drummer for good reason: he beat the shit out of those drums and had those amazing triplets.

    For a scene that had a famous shortage of drummers, Seattle had some great ones. If you take Chad, Dale, Dan, and Dave and then add Mike Mussburger, Jason Finn, and the BEAST Barrett Martin... wow! Maybe that's why they all played in six or seven bands each.

  • @TestMeatDollSteak

    The best overall performance, in terms of energy and enthusiasm, goes to the Motor Sports gig with Danny Peters. That entire set is easily in the top 5 Nirvana shows of all time (in my book).
    Best bass sound goes to the earlier show with Chad. Best drumming (of the shows featured) goes to Dale Crover, although the sound quality of that particular recording is unfortunately poor.
    Dave Grohl delivers a mighty performance, as always, and although the Leeds gig featured here isn't one of my personal favorites, there are other performances, such as the Off Ramp in Seattle in late 1990, that far outshine Dale's efforts. Dave seemed to "click" with Kurt and Krist better than any of the previous drummers.

    Just a average drummer’s opinion here, for me and I’m sure it’s like this for many of you out there as well-what was recorded on the record is set in stone. It’s the bible of that song, and it should in most respects be played how it was recorded. That’s just my opinion when it comes to Bleach. I think Chad fucking nailed his drum parts, including all of that sporadic double bass on the record. No disrespect to Dave-he’s a great musician and helped Nirvana become a massive band, but if there’s a Bleach song playing, I want to hear Chad’s drumming on that song. Sometimes Dave is just too loud for me, like here, all I heard was “crash crash crash crash crash whoah nice fill during the chorus crash crash crash snare roll crash crash.”

    Dale. he is a beast. And would have been nasty and heavy ! Dave was the perfect fit in the end. Quick and smart and in the pocket with powerful stuff and use of the ride symbol for the tempo and then almost as a open crash at times that is loud and sharp a good listener to guide depending on the party and kurts vibes and hear the grooves and then nail the tunes with improvisation abilities that is always alive feeling. Dale is the best drummer in the mix. He was more of a player and professional leagues and more than Nirvana needed creatively. It would have pushed kurt to expand his own playing.
    Edit. Imo.
    So Dave gets the price and got it.

    Interesting idea to do this comparison. Dave being the heavy hitter he always was and is, is the best choice of course. Plus his goddamn energy and charisma. But theyre all great. I liked Dan Peters' drumming actually though some here didnt. But all were great. Hit em hard !

    Dale Crover is one of the most under rated grunge & metal drummers of all time. Good pounding beats, double bass, speed, timing! Go listen to him with the Melvins. Dave fit Nirvana the best but Chad still could have down fine with Nirvana. Dan Peters is under rated also, good snare player just go listen to him in Mudhoney.

    I've never been a fan of Chad Channing's playing. Especially the double-kick stuff...and the hi-hats never open enough!
    I'm glad he's immortalised on bleach. He's forever tied to those songs and he definitely did them justice.
    But I just don't dig his style, to the point that it's distracting.
    Dave Grohl's playing in this vid is actually not that great, imo, but he's usually a lot better. And just flows and organically fits the music better.

    Have to say I have a lot of time for Dan Peters version. I really like Mudhoney anyway, and he really gave it some gas but maybe a bit too punky. And he stopped playing before the song was over lol.
    And as a side note: He was perfect on Sliver, and by the time he went back to Mudhoney for EGBDF he was well prepared for that kind of music.

    For me all the players were very good at the time. But Dave Grohl was more chaotic, aggressive, noisy, but at the same time, melodic. No doubts for me, was the best choice!

    You just know when Dave Grohl hits that cymbal it is over for any other drummer that played this song. Nirvana is pure energy and dynamics and Dave Grohl is one of the greatest at that kind of drumming. Chops aren't worth shit. It is all about feel and intensity in this style of music, and there has never been a drummer in Nirvana that is as good as those things as Dave Grohl.
