@@vilimbubas1302 how did he play them live on tour then? Please explain. I seen him play three times with them he was as good as grohl but more handsome than Curt.
From a musician's perspective, the difference between Channing and Grohl is that while Chad came up with many drum parts that really define a lot of early Nirvana tunes, he didn't have quite the technique needed to make them great. His sense of time is all over the place; his arms rush the beat while his foot can't stay in time. Grohl knew how to make it swing, and his time is right on the money. If you listen to live recordings from the Chad era, by the end of sets he sounds very tired and keeps slowing down, whereas Grohl kept great time all night long. You can give Chad a lot of credit for coming up with the syncopation and the parts that define the songs on Nevermind, but Grohl plays Chad's parts with much more accomplished technique. Another good example is "School." Listen to the Bleach version (Chad), which is a great drum part that defines the tune. But then listen to live versions of Grohl playing Chad's part -- he makes it swing and his time is better. He also hits a lot harder.

Grohl has said many times he's just playing Chad's parts on Nevermind, which he learned off the demos. He's just got better technique and can hit the drums generally better than Chad.

Yes. In all honesty the public persona of Kurt Cobain is just another media product. He liked to whine but he was kind of a jerk but one of those people who hide it well. There is a lot of shit that happened that we will never know about like for example Krist not comming to his wedding. His best friend he knew from childhood There was shit going on that we will never know about. I bet if he lived in this era with cameras and recordings everywhere - would know a very different Kurt. All we know is from few recordings Kurt being this likeable weirdo (pre Nevermind) or likeable stoner (after Nevermind) before the cameras. But make no mistake he was acutely aware the camera were rolling. Im not saying anything but also I highly susspect he was that good of a person. In those days lots of shit went behind closed doors. Especially him being around shady people with drugs and everything. not much is know about his drug dealers etc. We practically dont know much about Kurt when I think about it. All we have are some interviews, people's accounts some short video clips to judge. All we have is accounts of others in front of the camera which mean jack shit. I think he was very unfair to some people like his father but then again when I think about it he died at 27. He never even got to mature as a human being... Its sad at the end that's what it is.
You may be right -- some accounts I've read said that when Nevermind was at its peak and they were touring and making bank, Kurt wanted to fire Dave Grohl for playing "too heavy metal" or something. There are also many stories of Nirvana gigs when they were just starting to hit it big but were still booked in clubs. I can't tell you how many eyewitness accounts I've heard about what a total asshole Kurt was, throwing tantrums and acting like a complete jerk to everyone at clubs. There's video of the Texas club gig where Kurt hit the security man in the head with his guitar, and the guy responded by punching Kurt, which stopped the show for about 30 minutes. The whole show is on video and Kurt is acting like a spoiled brat for most of it. He seems absolutely insufferable. Others who knew him said his worst quality was his self-pity in the face of massive success, which he sabotaged every chance he got, by showing up to gigs wasted, trashing gear, and just being miserable to everyone.
Chad hits the drums just as hard and loud as Dave! Chads drumming definately made up a huge part of what was and still imo is Nirvana's sound! Dave just took over! Bleach is and always will be my favorite Nirvana album! Insesticide a close 2nd😱
John Lennon once said that he didn't care about the drumming. At the end of the day a drummer has to play according to what the writer of the song wants . That makes a drummer easy to fire, of course unless the drummer learns from Ringo, you know he would clown around for the band .
I feel like when it happened, if he's being honest and saying he just wasn't into it, then it probably wasn't a huge deal. I think after they became famous worldwide he was probably more on the "oh shit, damn.." level.
I totally agree, Chad really had a lot to put in and even did half of Nevermind if that says anything. Such a small time frame for so much music it's kinda overwhelming in a sense. A vital part of early Nirvana to say the least. Who knows, maybe they could have been in a more comfortable spot overall with Chad but history is what it is.
Kurt Cobain’s greatest gift was creating the appearance of being oblivious to the genius elements of Nirvana. That way it comes off very happenstance when the actuality was that he carefully curated all elements of Nirvana’s appeal. No better example of this is made than bringing Dave Grohl on as a replacement for Chad. Dave’s professionalism and metronomic precision allowed for Kurt and Krist to experiment and sit sonically on top of Dave’s hard hitting, in time foundation.
I love Kurt Cobain. I adore Chad Channing Too. I think he was good too. It was my impression that Chad's drumming style wasn't to Kurt or Nirvana's liking. If Chad was feeling or not feeling his part in the Band that makes it better to me. It looks as though there were conflicts as well not necessarily with Chad but conflicts are common in Bands.
Then again there's band like The Cure who have had some amazing drummers, but now have a crappy drummer. He's been around for so many years and everybody knows he's not as good as Boris or others.
@@scottmatznick6461 don't get me wrong, Chad added some great drum parts, but to be as great as they became, they needed a better drummer. Kurt said himself he wouldn't swap Dave Grohl for anyone. I've heard people say that Novoselic and Grohl, were the tightest rhythm section they had ever heard live. Not sure how much Chad was involved in the (mixing etc) of the drum sounds we hear, maybe he was! I'm sure he tuned his kit etc, but Jack Endino surely would've been adding some knowledge and experience to the final drum sounds.
@@saulgoodeguitars sure, but the think is how hard is sometimes to find that SIMPLICITY and make it work perfectly in a song. Plus, what we heard on Nevermind version is Chad playing in that song.

It would be interesting to see a band with Chad on drums, Jason on guitar, Chris on Bass and Davd on guitar and vocals. It would probably sound like the Foo's first album, haha, but it would be cool.
I always wondered if Nirvana would have been as huge if Chad Channing had stayed in the band, or if things would have turned out completely different without David Grohl
The thing that's weird is if you look at the performances from the time, Kurt overall seemed happier playing with Chad than he did Dave. Chad's style might not have been as good for some of the songs on Nevermind though, like if you listen to his version of Stay Away which was called Pay to Play at the time the drumming isn't nearly as powerful as Dave's. But overall I think he may have been more fun to play with b/c on songs like School he played slower & didn't rush through as much as Dave did, and had sort of more of a groove to his drumming. Chad will always be a significant part of Nirvana's history and body of work though. I reject the narrative that everything before Nevermind is less significant because "that's when they hit it big." Nirvana only had 3 major album releases & Bleach is one of them & possibly my favorite. So Chad is the drummer on a third of Nirvana's albums.
Channing is a marvellous guy. Really talented and centred. "Missing out" on the big time, is normal. 103 billion of us in history are forgotten. Channing really inspires me to go "heh" , nevermind.
I always liked Chad more then Dave because I tend to gravitate to eras of Nirvana that included Chad. I remember back in the Myspace days looking for what Chad was up to and finding the Before Cars Myspace page. I remember not caring much for the music though.
You should do one of these on Evanescence’s Ben Moody co-founder and while you’re telling the story might as well talk about the (whole rest of the band) who left also. Being the only remaining member Amy Lee seems like a story worth covering.
Some get fired from famous bands and move on pretty well to start their band which was very successful Dave Mustsaine Megadeth after getting fired from Metallica. Very rare though Could anybody name another?
Not a perfect example, but Jonny Craig has been pretty successful after being booted from Dance Gavin Dance. Although, I'm pretty sure he has since been kicked out of the next band (Slaves), too...
April of 1990, I'm narrowing it down to when I saw Nirvana. I graduated Omaha in 1989, and made my friend go to this bar when we heard bleach on speaker at record store. "Oh that's Nirvana, they're playing tonight at ski loft lift," whatever. I really don't know who played drums that night, not Dave grohl. If it was Chad Channing drumming - bleach sounds good to me.
Only for the single 'Sliver', if I remember the story correctly although Kurt liked his playing he didn't like his small drum kit, as kurt was a fan of 'big drums'. That's what they said in Michael Azerrads 'Come as you are' book. Whether it's true or not, fuck knows.
Chad Channing good drummer but Dave Grohl is so much more than just a drummer and I think Kurt recognised that. He his later career has shown what he can do. A talent like that is hard to pass up.
Nice saturday afternoon video. Nirvana was a breakthrough band in my life. They made me feel like it was okay to be a mother , painter weekend drummer and having torn clothes. When the last sounds of Europe and rest of the glam makeup metal fizzed out to make way for fresher air and sound quality. My time began . I still carry the energy and courage i gained through these great bands. I love all music, just saying.. Some catch my attention more than others... Thank you.
@@tjlazer79 not only Grohl lol MUCH more than Grohl actually. Bigger studio, better equipment, more equipment, bigger budget, more professional engineers... and of coarse the great talents of Kurt Dave and Krist into play.
I'd always thought they knew Chad anyway, obviously not And Chad is right about why he was fired, in a letter Kurt wrote but never sent to him Kurt said it came down to a growing lack of enthusiasm and commitment on Chad's part
So, from what I read below, Dave played Chad's parts, but refined them and played them with more precision. Did Chad get money for writing those parts? (technically, no copyright on drums for a melodic song, but ....did he get a payout for contributing?)
I think aside from skills, there’s the personality issues also. I’m sure Chad is really nice and talented but Dave is not only an extraordinary but he knows how to adapt well -considering he wasn’t in the beginning of Nirvana- but if you watch their videos, they click well with Dave. Dave (and Krist of course) can keep the beat even when Kurt is going on with his crazy antics. That’s something.
We all know why he was fired. He was sloppy af and there’s nothing he could do to change that. He can make excuses about not giving his all but the truth is, once Kurt heard grohl, chads fate was sealed. A band’s whole sound starts with the drummer.
Butch Vig took them there. And the songs themselves, and the voice. And Kurt's personality. Dave got lucky, and was about to be fired before Kurt got fucked.

He’s the Pete Best of the 90’s
Thatd make Dave Ringo
Gurtiss Staggolee yeah Ringo and George mixed
I was just thinking that. At least Kurt and Krist had the decency to tell him to his face. Whereas the Beatles had their manager do it.
Nah, Pete best never played on anything of note for the Beatles. Chad is on both Bleach and Incesticide.
"The REAL REASON" = what is generally reported to be the case
It's a pure click bait title 😂
I think he put that in because there's a lot of confusion around why chad left.
I heard it was bc kurt wanted him to take drum lessons
@@kashmyaadventures I thought it was because it wasn’t the style that Kurt was looking for
Imagine a show, Nirvana songs, Dave ghrol on guitar and vocals, chad on drums, and krist on base, make it happen🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
@CHAD k
@CHAD it would be Foovana
Dave Ghrol can't sing Nirvana's songs. Not even close...
I remember 1994 as if it was yesterday. I miss Kurt. Not gonna lie
you remember the 90's/early 2000's? must of been sober😂🍻
Awesome video! Thanks so much!
Chad hits the drums just as hard and loud as Dave! Chads drumming definately made up a huge part of what was and still imo is Nirvana's sound! Dave just took over! Bleach is and always will be my favorite Nirvana album! Insesticide a close 2nd😱
Insesticide share the first place for me.
No
Excellent video. Great to hear things from Chad’s perspective.
You just did.
They picked on the little guy
Great video dude!
Thanks for sharing. Kool getting to hear him talk about Nirvana.
I would have loved to hear Kurt sing some of Chad's songs. Chad has some good songs.
John Lennon once said that he didn't care about the drumming. At the end of the day a drummer has to play according to what the writer of the song wants . That makes a drummer easy to fire, of course unless the drummer learns from Ringo, you know he would clown around for the band .
Chad was on Bleach which was probably their best album.
How about nirvana reunion with krist on bass, Dave on vocals and guitar and Chad channing on drums.
Bottom line: If a band has had 4 or 5 drummers in the space of 2 or 3 years, pack lightly and keep your resume up-to-date.
I feel like when it happened, if he's being honest and saying he just wasn't into it, then it probably wasn't a huge deal. I think after they became famous worldwide he was probably more on the "oh shit, damn.." level.
He was probably jealous of their success, but I doubt he would've wanted to play with them again. The fact is that things weren't working out.
The band/Dave never changed any of beats Chad laid down which indicates a mutual respect from all involved.... Enough said!
I love Chad..I love Bleach..School is my fav song..never get bore listen to it from 90s til now 2020
Hey at 3:09 Blue Cheer album. Nice!
Chad was good, but not good enough. That's the main reason.
Then again there's band like The Cure who have had some amazing drummers, but now have a crappy drummer. He's been around for so many years and everybody knows he's not as good as Boris or others.
Idk, it's Chad's drum sound that really pulls people in to Nirvana, in my opinion
All the drummers were good but chad and Dave were exceptional with Dave on the top end of the spectrum. But chad could write good drums beats.
Great drummer, super underrated. Also, anyone seen recent pictures/videos of Chad? Dude literally hasn't aged at all.
Nirvana’s main Inspo was Blue Cheer. Not many people know that, or have ever heard of Blue Cheer.
I had never heard "inspo" before this comment.
My band, Mantank, supported Blue Cheer at the Boardwalk in Sheffield, UK during the 2000's.
alukuhito inspiration. See timecode 3:08 for the blue cheer record in their rehearsal space.
Jonny Davies that’s awesome!! Same here, I was in PowerTrane with Scott Morgan, and we opened for blue cheer in Detroit.
Actually the drum on Polly from Nevermind is the take from Chad Channing
Don’t get me wrong, I really like the songs Chad did with nirvana, but anybody could have did the cymbal hits on Polly
@@saulgoodeguitars sure, but the think is how hard is sometimes to find that SIMPLICITY and make it work perfectly in a song. Plus, what we heard on Nevermind version is Chad playing in that song.
Always enjoy your videos, this one being no exception.
Things change. Who would have guessed Krist would salute Trump for protecting his money? Right?..its not 1992...and 1992 wasn't 1988.
A small part of my childhood died when I saw that.
Really? I missed that. Source?
@@shetlandally1107 Google.
@@shetlandally1107 I saw on Yahoo news that he made a post praising Trump's response to the protests.
Quelle blasphemy! No wonder that dude disappeared after Kurt died, never to be seen again.
My Hat off to you, Chad!
Thanks Dude, for that info! I didnt know a lot about Chad. Just have seen his Nirvana tribute band in Latvia few years ago (I am latvian). Cool. Keep it up Bro!
Great to see another video!
Surprised hes not in some kind of those kind of members from back in the grunge days supergroup today
Could you maybe make a video which goes over what Kurt or Nirvana book is the best and most truthful to read? Maybe some kind of ranking?
"It is nice to see Chad playing the guitar" in a image of Chad with a bass
Chad was a really good drummer, Dave Grohl was just better.
He wasn't man...that's the truth. Even today he's really bad. Everyone who plays for real some musical instruments notice it easily
@@rafaelfogaca1761 both Chad and dave are amazing drummers. I play instruments, I'm in a punk band I play bass, guitar, piano, and I know the basics to drumming although I don't play myself. They're both awesome drummers but Chad just didn't fit the sound Kurt was looking for. Even dave credited Chad for being an awesome drummer, Chad was the one who wrote the drums for "in bloom" from before dave joined which is one of the most recognisable drum fills ever.
@@dylanbenadie458 Sorry but he is not. It's impossible not to how bad he is as drummer dude. He totally out of time. I whacthed his lives playing he is horrible. Don't look at studio record, seach for videos that he was playing and you will see.
@@rafaelfogaca1761 Chad or Dave?
@@samhalls2967 Dave hands down!!1 Daved is a great drummer, he is a real musician
What is the date of the photo with preview?
It would be interesting to see a band with Chad on drums, Jason on guitar, Chris on Bass and Davd on guitar and vocals. It would probably sound like the Foo's first album, haha, but it would be cool.
It would sound like The Poo 💩 Shiters 🙃
I always wondered if Nirvana would have been as huge if Chad Channing had stayed in the band, or if things would have turned out completely different without David Grohl
Nope.
@dooder Lars is responsible for arranging most Metallica's music.
I'm getting Chad and Krist's autographs soon.
Just a thought, maybe it was the producers who suggested they get a new drummer ?
also damn there were a lots of ultra rares pictures in this video
nice
I'm from Aberdeen, there is a ton of old nirvana drummers around town.
LOL!!! :-)
Hey, he pronounced “debut” correctly on this video!
i feel bad for the " T"
Wasn't Dan Peters from Mudhoney drumming for Nirvana after Chad
Only for the single 'Sliver', if I remember the story correctly although Kurt liked his playing he didn't like his small drum kit, as kurt was a fan of 'big drums'. That's what they said in Michael Azerrads 'Come as you are' book. Whether it's true or not, fuck knows.
When asked in modern times if Chad feels he is "Today's Pete Best",..he has said "Yes,..in every sense,... But it's even WORSE than that ,."
Chad Channing good drummer but Dave Grohl is so much more than just a drummer and I think Kurt recognised that. He his later career has shown what he can do. A talent like that is hard to pass up.
Great video love your opinion on things
Bleach wouldn't sound the way it does if he wasn't the drummer. Best Nirvana album.
Chad Channing " best drummer NIRVANA had!!!!!! 🏆🥁
Thank you.
chad is a frigging vampire, more than 30 years have passed and he has barely aged
Its so strange that he wrote the parts for nevermind
I see Chad as a riff man behind drums, you can just sing his drum riffs, and were very particular, like School, In Bloom, Sappy, Scoff, etc.
Before watching the video: he left nirvana because his drumming wasn’t up to standard for Kurt ;) we all know Kurt was always right
Yep. Nevernind and In Utero are better because of Grohl. Whatever he brought to the band it really helped thier sound.
@@tjlazer79 not only Grohl lol MUCH more than Grohl actually. Bigger studio, better equipment, more equipment, bigger budget, more professional engineers... and of coarse the great talents of Kurt Dave and Krist into play.
You Suck!
Chad Channing@@tjlazer79
I'd always thought they knew Chad anyway, obviously not
And Chad is right about why he was fired, in a letter Kurt wrote but never sent to him Kurt said it came down to a growing lack of enthusiasm and commitment on Chad's part
I actually preferred Chad Channing’s drumming, imo Chad was the best drummer they had.
So, from what I read below, Dave played Chad's parts, but refined them and played them with more precision.
Did Chad get money for writing those parts? (technically, no copyright on drums for a melodic song, but ....did he get a payout for contributing?)
I believe he did. He didn’t make as much as Dave or krist but he’s got a net worth of a million dollars
Chad, props to you.
He doesn't want to say that kurt wanted him to take drum lessons so he would be better at drumming. It hurt his pride.
Imagine what artist of today would describe themselves as "heavy pop".
Childish Gambino
@@connormckee4431 Never heard about them, I just checked them out.. HAha yeah thats pretty accurate :D I miss the old pop :)
That`s the real reason why he got fired
prolly imagine dragons
I wonder if Chad ever hangs out with Pete Best and Jimmy Pages dragon Telecaster ?
I love Chad. Know him personally but Dave took them to the top. Compare the In Blooms and there is no comparison.
Butch Vig took them there. And the songs themselves, and the voice. And Kurt's personality. Dave got lucky, and was about to be fired before Kurt got fucked.
Great coverage, but Krist Novoselic is pronounced "Kris Novoselich"
Do you pronounce "data" as data, or data?
@@alukuhito I lean towards data, but that's just my preference. Data is equally acceptable.
Chad is better than all the drummers
