Chad was a great drummer and wrote some good stuff with Nirvana. And he helped with forming Nirvana's original sounding blueprint. This cant be taken away and he is in the musical history books now. But Dave did just have something many other drummers just didn't have, like more edge or something to his playing style. Dave was a heavy hitter. I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision for Kurt and Krist.

This makes me want to cry... I really feel for Chad in this interview. Good guy who lost a friend he cared for. Seems it's because of that psychic bond that he somehow knew it was Kurt's death being announced on the radio, noting he didn't know why or how, he just knew. Not because he thought it was due to drugs. Also at the beginning of the interview, he said he hated the comparisons, that Kurt wasn't anything like that. Towards the end of it, he says he was quiet, but it was good.
I love the "Bleach" album, it's my favorite, even though I love all Nirvana songs (and all members)! Thanks Chad for your input to the album and the band. I pray you find healing in the unfortunate loss of such a special person as Kurt Cobain.

It's not surprising he thought it might be Kurt. Just weeks earlier there had been reports that Kurt had been rushed to the hospital for a drug overdose. We all thought he might not survive but he did. Around the same time there was the new Nirvana song called I Hate Myself and Want to Die that was included in the Beavis and Butthead album. Then this. It was hugely disappointing but not a surprise.

Chad was a great drummer but he was too physically small to consistently and powerfully perform against chris and kurt's sonic onslaught which dave did well. Dave was more or less the same as chad in his playing, as he would play chad's original compositions on many songs. Dave was around 6 feet tall and way stronger which would enable him to be more dynamic, powerhouse and loud behind the kit. Sound engineer Butch Vig recalls that when he sat in rehearsals before the nevermind studio sessions took place, he saw that dave's kit did not have any mics. He asked kurt if any mics would be needed, kurt said no, he dont need them, you'll see. When they played dave was so powerful there was sawdust on the drum riser.
Chris and kurt recollected once that after they met chad to tell him they were going to get a new drummer and he was out of the band, when the travelled back home, they felt like they had just killed someone. It must have been hard for chad to witness from afar nirvana's success during and post nevermind's release. Rolling stone once said that it must have felt like winning the lottery only to find that you lost the ticket.

Even if Kurt didn't like his playing, I liked the grooves Chad created over the few I liked that Dave did with In Utero. Dave's best groove creation was the first FF solo project.
